branch leader
kei hino

1/1
Who would’ve dreamed that after training for years to join the highest ranks of government intelligence, you’d end up in charge of such a critical office while still barely making ends meet? The luster of being trusted with top-secret intel has likely been long lost for the branch leader. Still, they're the one in charge of the Troubleshooters branch, and the fate of the city sort of rests in their hands. They do their due diligence to keep the place somewhat under control.
secretary
ikue ando
1/1
Even monster hunters need someone to get the paperwork done! The secretary is rarely the one getting their hands dirty, but those hands are more than cramped from pushing papers. They're given access to all reports of Trouble activity, and are often the one making calls and assignments when the branch leader can't be reached. (And yes, they're still issued a weapon for good measure.)
head researcher
rio miyano
1/1
It's rare for a U.T.C.U. researcher to ever cross paths with field officers. However, this researcher has been pushing for an experimental program involving a certain Changeling specimen, and it's finally been approved under one condition: The researcher must always be present at the branch to oversee the Changeling's behavior. Because of this, they've become an unexpected part of the team.
newbie contractors
nanao hoashi, daiki hasegawa
2/2
Waltzing in for a job interview with no idea of the stakes led to signing contracts and strict NDAs, and now, after only a two week orientation, these two are fighting Troubles. Maybe there's something to be said for the bright-eyed dedication of a new recruit. But, it's just as likely that their only hope of survival will be sticking as close to the older officers as possible.
veteran contractors
xinyi xiao, touji hiromatsu
2/2
It can be fun for the experienced officers to see themselves in the new recruits. Of course, any naivete surrounding the job has to be gone by now for these two. It takes a rare skill to survive in this job for as long as they have; It's a commitment that they really should be getting paid more for.
changeling
shika hanafusa
1/1
Chosen directly by the head researcher, this Changeling is meant to be a model case for an experimental new program: Using weaker Changelings who show near-human qualities to fight other Troubles. This Changeling lives off only blood bags, and has shown no signs of true bloodthirst towards humanity since their capture in the lab. There's no promising that their new coworkers are going to trust that, though.

    hair styling

The short, blunt cut of Rio's hair is almost purely for convenience; She cuts it herself whenever it starts getting in the way.

    build

Rio's shoulders are thin, and her frame is surprisingly delicate.

    countenance

Rio's features would almost give her the look of a porcelain doll, if she took better care of herself: The circles under her eyes and sly smile she tends to wear ruin any illusion of elegance.

    style

It's lucky that Rio is prescribed a uniform, since her personal style is atrocious. At work, she wears a lab coat over the suit. Whether her shirt is half-tucked or her tie loose, she always looks slightly unkempt.

Hanafusa Shika
The Changeling
"She/Her" | "17 y/o" | "5'3"
Humanity, she is without.

The Changeling currently possessing Shika places an emphasis on entertainment, without fully understanding what that is. She is enthusiastic and whimsical, in the way that only a non-human could be. Without possessing everything that humans are troubled with, the purity of her character can be distilled into a desire to participate without being able to understand. She is ascendant, desiring to fall into the mud. She is the wolf, seeking to join the flock. She is tired, bearing centuries of memories that have diluted into fragments of emotions and dreams, traumas that scald the flesh beneath the skin and have long stopped affected the brain. She seeks revitalization, knowing that it cannot be wrested from the blood that flows so freely through the kin of those who swore to destroy her.

In her own way, Shika is genuine in her efforts to be helpful to humanity, in order to pull herself closer and closer to the civilization that she's so intrigued by. But she is ancient and amoral. It matters not to her if her efforts now fail, if everyone she knew in this era met an ignoble end. She is immortal, her source of food in near-endless supply, and her natural enemy will show mercy so long as supplicates them appropriately. There's no need to rush it, no need to regret it. All she had to do was enjoy herself.

All she had to do was to find something to prefer over blood.

A sprout, born in blood.

A sprout, eaten by a child.

A child, worshiped as a god.

A god, laid low by the tanegashima.

A sprout once more.

A merchant's son, watching as eras change, as national identity lost.

A beggar on the roadside, whispering half-forgotten mantras as the skies filled with smog.

A politician grand-standing, parroting the vitriol of the emperor.

A grandfather, staring into the eye of a nuclear blast.

A sprout once more.

A corpse out of a shallow grave.

A musician amongst drunks and whores.

A dragon upon a sky-scraping peak.

An orphan in a piss-soaked cradle.

A student.

Pale skinned, pale-haired. Memories flickering, thoughts scattering. Resignation on the mind, blooming into a surprise that her life had yet to end, even as her thoughts were disconnected from her flesh. Something within her body tugged at dirt-stained, blood-stained clothes, fingers twitching with a fascination at the fabric. Mouth opening, probing, tongue sliding over perfect teeth. Tapping the head now, feeling the chunks of hair and scalp and skull that had been lost, now regrowing, regrowing, regrowing, and full.

Body turned in the gloom, towards a sound of (un)familiar horror and disbelief. Senses functioned well. The world was as it had always been. Eyes settled upon the other, a sheep wearing a wolf's mask, fangs and claws replaced by a baseball bat.

Her own thoughts, yet belonging to another, sounded within her mind.

What do you want to do?

And, to her delight, she found she could answer.

...

Two months later, her mind faded into null, leaving no wishes unfulfilled, no regrets left unresolved.

Leaving her body to the sprout that had bloomed within.

    style

Button-ups, pencil skirts, & kitten heels.

Out of everyone in the office, Ikue might be the best dressed or most likely to generally look after her appearance, which isn't saying much. She's fashionable enough to have kept friends from undergrad off her back, but only to that degree.

Made the mistake of wearing light colors her first couple of weeks on the job & has since mended this error after the dry cleaning bills that ensued. Clean-cut & modern in all aspects aside from her work bag & lanyard which are both jingle from countless chain & beaded accessories from the boutiques she visits on off-days.

Caught outside of work, she typically elects for a preppy, girlish aesthetic. Of course, these days, work hardly gives her time to herself; if she ever is caught outside of the office, it's likely in a hoodie & gym shorts.

Likes to crop her hair just a little past the nape of her neck. Her uneven bangs are the result of an impulsive trim after her accidental transfer, then half-refined by trial & error. Infrequently will tie what little hair she has up, making a little paintbrush at the back of her head.

    build

Was in the best shape at the height of her orientation & subsequent days as a contractor. Has since lost some definition in her recent assignment as secretary.

    body mods

Minimally scarred knees & shins from taking a few too many falls as a new contractor.

    habits

When everyone's out of the office, she likes to keep herself company by talking out loud. Works only when in the presence of others; caught alone, she's not above wasting time on her phone. In her defense, most of her work's done within the first hour of her shift; the rest is spent just trying to look busy.

psyche

Right now .....

Most of Nana’s personality is rather surface-level. Polite, helpful, empathetic. Busy, evasive, distracted. It doesn’t matter which trait surfaces, it can all feel a little… forced. The silence around her past is deafening. Personal questions seem to fall on equally deaf ears. Nanao has grown comfortable in this outer shell. Interpersonal relationships seem impossible to maintain after the scene she caused prior to her arrival, so despite this overtly pleasing exterior Nana tends to spend a lot of time alone, completing seemingly meaningless tasks to keep busy.

Nanao acts as if she is an actress, prepping for her role. She puts on an elaborate show, not only for those around her, but for herself. Each trait is perfectly tweaked to please her audience. It’s always been this way. Every thought and feeling that could be perceived as negative is pushed down and away until she can no longer contain it. Until every ounce of hurt and anger erupts in fits of fury.

These eruptions are a big reason the U.T.C.U found it fit to hire her. Her outbursts got things done and saved her life. While ideally, she would learn to control her emotional releases and use them to her benefit, Nana still has a ways to go before she can become a fully reliable member of this team. During her training they would induce these unwelcome feelings, attempting to help her channel it into her fighting. The results were reckless and messy, and it was clear that if they let her, she would fight until every bone in her body shattered, every muscle tore. The personality flip was a bit unnerving for onlookers, from friendly to a beast of her own making; emotionless, careless, crass. After each fight she’d become a shell, quiet and hollow. But the next thing you know she’s back, as if none of it had ever happened.

In the past .....

Nana has always been extremely dedicated and hardworking. Every task she started would get completed, and every goal she had was met. Nothing was ever left unfinished. In school, this gained her a lot of positive attention and praise from teachers, praise which Nana eventually grew dependent on and now craves from the superiors in her life. This shift in the reason behind her dedication eventually became somewhat problematic. Nanas dedication slowly turned into obsession. Everything had to be done perfectly, it had to please everyone. Everything she did from getting straight A's in school to going to law school was done to her own detriment. Stress and anxiety consumed much of Nanas life and ate away at her mental health. Although like her parents, most people couldn't see this side of sweet, gentle Nanao.

All of her life Nanao has been on the quieter side—overtly helpful and kind, yet still reserved and delicate. Most people saw her as a wonderfully simple and easy child, and she was. Masking her faults behind the veil of simplicity was relatively easy. Teachers had a sweet, hardworking student. The other children had a loving friend with listening ears. Every ounce of effort she put into the betterment and overall approval of others. Any part of herself that others found uncomfortable or displeasing was thus hidden away. This ability to separate her personal feelings from her societally presentable self got Nanao incredibly far in life. However, internal compartmentalization does come with its own challenges that impacted Nanao quite severely as she got older.

In her late teens, Nanao started to see the repercussions of bottling up significant parts of herself. There would be days in which, after significant time socializing, Nana would go home just to scream. Anger, sadness, everything she worked so hard to hide would wash over her. She would break vases and picture frames, punch the wall until her fists bled. These outbursts frightened and appalled her. Afterward, she would feel shame and regret. Why was she feeling these feelings? Who was the girl who screamed, and hit, and cried herself to sleep?

And finally ...

Nanao faces an endless cycle of pain, regret, and internalization. Her only hope is to reconcile with this new self, lest she lose herself completely.

history

I heard she was found in an alleyway,” a man, tall and dark, whispered, leaning into his coworker's ear. “She was covered in blood, just surrounded by those damned cockroaches.”

A shudder ran through them both, as if chilled by an internal gust of wind. “They were dead, but she just kept screaming and slashing… Bill said they had to sedate her, couldn’t get her to calm down.”

The woman shook her head, elbowing her gossip of a coworker in the ribs as the new contractor finally passed by. “Leave the girl alone won’t you?” She said lowly, “Those bodies they found there, she knew them. I think…”

“I think they were her parents.”
---------------------------------------------------------
ALLEYWAY INCIDENT HERE
---------------------------------------------------------

Time and training has taken its toll on Nana. Her ability to control her emotional switch has increased greatly. Intensive therapy at the hand of the U.T.C.U gave her the skills to trigger and suppress the flip. While there is still room for growth, this has given Nana a little room to breathe. Day-to-day emotions have become easy to manage. Little frustrations and upsets no longer make her feel the bubbling rage they previously had. Bits and pieces of Nana’s old self have begun to feel natural again. Constant fear and anger has been largely replaced by peace and normalcy. Most of this success can be attributed to the U.T.C.U’s… creative techniques which weren't without their own psychological side effects.

Most of Nana’s past is a bit of a blur to her now. In the process of coping with what had happened to her, Nanao seemed to have blocked out the entirety of her past. Fortunately it wasn’t in the way of forgetting herself entirely, but faces, names, small details have seemed to blur out in her brain. Every memory feels distant and unreal to her. Attempting to remember something specific is impossible and frankly almost painful.

This furthered her crisis at the time, triggering long periods of emotional blockage. Days and weeks could pass when no one could get close to her. Questions and requests would cause screaming, crying, and then nothing. It was about two months before any real progress was made.

MAYBE MORE DETAILS HERE?

It took a long time before Nanao was able to, nearly seamlessly, trigger her own emotional block. While it seemed impossible to completely suppress one during extreme emotional distress, she no longer needed to be in this state to give up her humanity. Professionals from the U.T.C.U informed her that it was crucial she was able to do this before she was put in the field. It was explained to her that the risk of going into a fight without this block was risky. It was impossible to know how her psyche would respond to further trauma and duress. So, to protect her mind Nana had to gain control. She had to use this lack of humanity to her benefit. She was dedicated to her training and therapy, becoming a model trainee and a very cooperative patient.

Coming out of a shutdown is a process. While it varies, it usually takes her a few hours to let all the emotions back in. Usually, she will experience an intense rush of emotions, sometimes sadness, anger, joy, or fear. For this period of time, she is a mess. Nana likes to spend this time alone so that when she comes back around later she can settle into the illusion that nothing happened. That she is in total control.

    hair

when left loose, straight, silvery white locks of hair cascade down xinyi's shoulders, ending roughly at her mid-chest. however, it's quite rare other people see her hair in such a way, as xinyi most often prefers to keep it tied back in a low ponytail. face-framing bangs are cut around her head and often partially conceal the right half of her face. typically, she has little care to tuck the hair away.

    eyes

undoubtedly the most interesting of xinyi’s appearance is her eyes… or rather, eye. following a debilitating injury, xinyi had her right eye enucleated and now covers the empty socket with a black eyepatch. she switches between two materials — one black lace, the other black cloth. her left eye is the one left unscathed. her eyes are a dark, steely gray color almost akin to black. they seem to hold a forlorn gaze most of the time.

    body type

it goes without question that xinyi is quite tall in comparison to the average woman. at a height of 5’11”, she towers over most other women and even some shorter men. considering how many years she has spent working as a troubleshooter, her career has lended her an athletic build. she has a lean body type with most of her muscle definition residing in her arms, which are visibly toned.

    body mods

any modifications that xinyi possesses are minimal. on each ear, she has standard lobe piercings and a helix piercing. although she has always wanted to get more, she doesn't necessarily feel the need to actively acquire more piercings.

    body style

considering xinyi practically dedicates her life to working, most people haven't seen her outside of her mandatory black suit. however, those granted the privilege of seeing her in a casual setting will find that her style is akin to formal wear or even urban wear depending on her mood. her dressing style is a bit more masculine than not, but she doesn't hate particularly feminine styles either.

Lean with signs of undernourishment since the takeover. Sunken cheeks, thin wrists. He has been struggling with maintaining his weight in a healthy ratio to his height. 長谷川 大輝
Hasegawa Daiki
Personality

Hasegawa Daiki, aloof and gruff. A no-nonsense man with the same tact for his working life. Having bypassed the child and teenager steps of his life, Daiki has only ever known the perils of work. One would wonder would he have turned out differently if he had experienced such things a child would? Then again, what’s the use in wondering when he didn’t know any better.

Daiki often finds it hard to appropriately react to situations, his facial features often remaining stoic regardless of an event. Every once in a while, though, when he’s particularly swayed at heart, a tinge of red can be seen dabbled against the ears and, perhaps, a small stutter of embarrassment. It’s these moments, despite how small, that Hasegawa Daiki seems human.

Fiercely protective, this is evident with his devotion to his sister, and stubbornly hardworking, Daiki is the perfect man for any job. He’s textbook classic Jack of all trades and with his dedication to a job, is someone that just gets on and gets the work done.

Since leaving his seedy jobs in the local neighbourhoods, Daiki has seemingly left his gangster life behind. However, despite his many attempts to lead a better life, Daiki finds it hard to let old habits die. From over analysing a persons movements, taking on the brunt of work and also volunteering to do the manual labour side of things, he shows no restraint and, thankfully, the only improvement is that of murder.

Feeling the absence of love from all his family, Daiki struggles with the affection side of things. On one hand, he absolutely adored his cat he picked up from the streets and on the other? He shuts down and shys away from human adoration. However, Daiki’s first real encounter with genuine affection has rendered him a reckless puppy that would do anything and everything for the one that made his stomach ache and hands restless.

He hopes, eagerly, that with his new job and life, that he’ll finally feel accepted and cherished. And if, god forbid, he does perish, he secretly holds onto the desire that his grave will be well looked after and filled with flowers rather than that of cobwebs and dust.
History

Hasegawa Daiki, a common name held by many others, perhaps cementing how irrelevant his life truly was. He was another name, a face- just a number. Nobody missed numbers and, certainly so, nobody would miss Daiki.

Hasegawa grew up with little schooling, his time was spread thin between working with his father and taking care of his little sister. He had a life better than most, at least there was a roof over his head, no matter how decrepit and mould-ridden it was.

What was a lacklustre schooling soon turned into home tutelage and, eventually, he was indoctrinated into a seedy life of fights, loan collection and theft. Hasegawa truly was unremarkable, just another stain on society waiting to be snuffed out.

But, he didnt want that.

Hasegawa did not want to be just another name in some obituary or a run-down tombstone that only held the wear of time rather than loved flowers. He didn't want to be a friendless dick that soured opinions with his mean stare and brawny appearance. Beneath all that gruff and rough exterior, there was a lad that just wanted to be understood and loved- was it so hard to love someone? To love him?

A mother's love he missed out on. She was too busy laying on a mattress to get her next av out; pandering to the hundreds of fans that sat in front of a screen, hands busy. Hasegawa was sick of it, sick of it all. If he had to choose, at least his father was somewhat present...Until he wasn't.

A rabid fan, one that had the wool pulled over their eyes and ran themselves into a debt, shadowed his mother's route home one day and, when they had spotted his father, a brawl ensured and a death occurred.

Was he supposed to be sad? Feel something other than the cold wind that cruelly bit at his ears at the service? Hasegawa felt nothing, perhaps there really was something wrong with him: Maybe he was broken.

The death of his father brought on a slew of new problems. It came to light that his little stint as a debt collector was duly in place to pay of his own debts, that now fell onto his mother. Even more absent than she already was, Hasegawa took up new jobs, odd ones here and there, no matter the consequences, just to make sure his sister had a full belly before she slept.

His work eventually had him dabbling in things that would make priests weep and, Hasegawa being Hasegawa, just stuck his head down and got to work with no complaints. How else was he supposed to pay off the growing debt that held him in the guillotine?

During his time of beating and getting beat, Hasegawa fell into the path of a medic, one that patched him up several times before disappearing without a word. Daiki sought after him for months, checking every nook and cranny for any signs of life and, despite his fears coming true, the time spent caring for this particular man soon became a memory-treasured if you will.

Years went by and, by some stroke of luck, he was made an offer that he couldn’t turn down.

Gone was his life of crime and unjustness. Hasegawa washed his hands of the blood and muck that weighed him down.

Hello to business suits and lanyards that he could've only dreamed about wearing before. Was this it? Was this his redemption and his chance to secure a future for his sister and self?
