They blinked. And then blinked again.

Dark and cold was wrapped around them, and the lack of wind told them that they were in a closed room. In front of them a matrix of screens, and a keyboard and mouse was on the table. The neon light gave a soft glow. It was the common set-up in a control room. They blinked once more, and their surrounding didn't change at all.

The front-most lower screen was showing the face of a young man with black hair, and the background in the videocall seemed to show he was in a warehouse.

A static noise spoke over the speakers, "Xavier?"

They hadn't met him in this world, but they knew who he was, and what was said in what was supposed to be in the last minute.

The person in the room leaned forward, dragging the microphone in the room closer. "I can hear you," they said, as the masculine distorted by machines ran through the silent room. "I am currently occupied, I will contact you another time. Good day."

The screen blackened, and darkness continued to swallow the room. The neon lights faded out from their vision as they leaned back into the seat.

As fast as electric pulses, visions flashed through their mind as vivid as any of their memories in this world, and the ones from before.

They were in Erminia. They had seen the Cloud of Darkness. They were in Roselea. They had encountered monsters. They had ran into Gula. And then…

They are now in another city. In Valista. He now had different allies. He now had the title and power of "Xavier" returned to him. Reality had changed again.

"Another world jump…." they sighed, to no one in the room.

This is about an RP starting from a group of characters in a high fantasy world. By odd circumstances, they find themselves having to deal with monsters that have emerged in the land of Erminia and Lexaria. All due to the Cloud of Darkness that had emerged many years ago.

Until they encountered the pit.

All across Erminia, the weather was fair. There were a few clouds that drifted by, but nothing as forebodding as the cloud of darkness hovering over the islands in the sky. Roselea, was an exception. Half-engulfed by the mountain shadows, half of the city was dark like the evening. Judging by the position of the sun, there were still a few hours until twilight, but it would seem the shadows would swallow the place whole.

Within the public library, there was some shuffling of feet, as two had just entered the libary. From their appearances, they were clearly not human even if they walked with two legs and had no fur nor feathers. Up ahead where there was a large space without shelves, there was a large figure floating up in the air. The one on the right, the vampire Vodka, and by his side was the demon, Cider. The two became abnormally still as one of the floating mass extended its arms to a demon that was cowering there.

"Oh, my dear Aamon." The voice said, causing the demon to shiver even more. "I'm not angry. Not at all, and I really mean it. You should know by now that I love you. We are both demons. It's just ... I am stronger than you, hence I want to devour you even more. That is all."

The two looked away for a moment, as the two could almost hear the silent scream from Aamon as he was consumed by the demon of Gluttony. They didn't turn until the hovering one had finally called them over. "Cider, Vodka." the demon of Gluttony said. "You have news?"

Emiyn stiffened when he read the letter from his elder half-sister. Did her school and town not hear about the rumours about Roselea yet? Living in the capital, he had no idea how quick news would travel to other parts of Erminia. His fingers curled together tightly, causing a loud crunching sound from the half-wrinkled paper. With a brisk and urgent pace, he walked out of his room. "Ayumu!"

...
...

While Emiyn was too old to be brawling his eyes out, the boy was feeling unsettled by how white his knuckles were. Soldiers' rumours weren't always baseless or false, and he was expecting the situation to not be good. He wasn't expecting it to be this bad when he came to look for the sister.

Nothing happened when they were getting here on foot. Ayumu, being the only one he could directly order to come with him, had accompanied. The younger had decided to check the gates to see if Erika might have tried to leave, only to find that there were many pairs of red eyes staring at them from the forest. There was a low of hum of the growl though they did not advance yet. Where did the hellhounds come from? He felt especially vulnerable with only, he and one other person in this deserted gate.

The boy took a step back, not wanting to look away. "We .... let's find another way... Ayumu." He said, while trying to think of alternatives. Anything that would be safer than this for now. "Perhaps we should look further inside the city first..."

Other than some of her belongings wet, the shipwreck turned minor enough for it to be dragged to shallow waters before all the passengers had managed to get to the shore of the river next to Roselea. Glad that it was summer and that she wasn't going to get a cold, Erika tried to ignore the unsettling cold from her wet sleeves and shoes.

She took a peek into the wooden box that she had, raising an eyebrow. A lot of her things hadn't escaped the fate of the river water, but his belongings did? She closed the box again. Well, it wasn't like he was going to be found now. Not when she had heard that no one had dared to venture to Roselea lately.

She had walked through the gate rather quickly about twenty minutes ago. By the time she had seen the sign for the market square, the girl turned. Certainly, she had been one of the quickest to reach the shore, but ... where were the local residents. Almost as though paranoid, she stopped and turned her head back, staring at the bleak street. The sun couldn't reach here, unlike the other side of the city. Even if the girl was more numb to fear of risk, Erika did muse that it was the perfect setting for a horror tale.

Seeing that there really was no one there, she gave a light shrug, and continued walking further. The quicker she found a place to drop this, the quicker she can leave.

Ayumu Suzukaze

Ayumu let out a low, thoughtful hum as he took in his surroundings, specifically the forest edge that was clearly guarded by red hellhound eyes. Without much flare or needless commentary, the young man agreed with the young prince and led them back behind the city gates. It wasn’t that he was being carefree or without any worry for the situation they were in at the moment. He was actually starting to feel the slightest edge of fearful uneasiness skittering at the back of his mind...as if they were being hunted. Anyone would if they saw a rather large pack of hellhounds who have wandered so far from their usual territories. But for Emiyn’s sake (as well as his own), it was better to keep a clear mind and push those troubling “what ifs” away for the time being.

“Hnn...we should probably circle the town along the gates first, Your-...sir. We might be able to find an opening that way,” he gently suggested, already eyeing the distant silhouette of the next gate guard station as they walked along. Like the rest of the town, their surroundings were settled with uneasy silence that was only broken by the crunching of their boots against dry dead leaves and their own voices. “If not...we might be better off heading towards the town square. It’s not likely with the state of the town but military academy students are usually asked to regroup in notable areas such as the town fountain, memorials or the town square.”

Even after giving those suggestions, seeing how stressed the young prince was, Ayumu couldn’t help but feel that familiar feeling of helplessness and sinking confidence. It was not unlike what he feels when his mother’s anemia would hit her particularly hard and had the familiar taste of anxiety for impending failure made bitter with self-imposed guilt. His father had always told him that penchant for taking on guilt that was not his to burden himself with was one his major flaws and something that could get him killed one day. It was one of the rare harsh lessons his father had given him during one of Ayumu’s regular visits back home. One that his father made sure Ayumu would never forget...even with that old injury of his.

(But it was so hard...like he was supposed to stop caring.)

Even so, keeping his father’s lesson close to his heart, Ayumu swallowed the apology (“that wasn’t going to help anyone”) and tried for a smile that was certainly still bright but lacked its usual spark. “I’m sure Miss Erika is safe. She has a good head on her shoulders and--...”

His voice trailed off into startled silence as he smelled stench of decaying flesh before his eyes landed on a very real corpse. On reflex, Ayumu’s right hand flew to the grip of his short sword as his left hand brought Emiyn close and covered his eyes. It was only when they (cautiously) inched close enough inspect that body that the young man realized what he had done and let the young prince go like a hot potato with a mortified earnest whispered apology.

Though he felt like he was dying a little bit in the inside with sheer shame, Ayumu still pulled himself together enough to request that the young prince stay back before he carefully inspected the body...while keeping an eye out for danger. However, as he inspected at the body, he couldn’t help but feel like something was very wrong with the picture that he was seeing.

“What...” he murmured to himself as the feigned calm of his expression crumpled like paper as became more and more openly filled with dread about the situation. The dead man would have looked like he was just sleeping if it weren’t for the smell and his pale gaunt appearance. The body looked like he didn’t die violently nor from sickness but...slowly and painfully from starvation. But seeing and feeling the quality of the cloth that the dead man had on his person, it just didn’t make sense to Ayumu that this man would have starved to death at the edge of such a town as Roselea no matter how unnaturally empty it was.

“We should leave, Your Highness.” For once, though still respectful and polite, the usually compliant bodyguard’s voice gave little to no room for arguments. Taking Emiyn’s arm, Ayumu briskly started walking away from the body and towards the center of Roselea. He didn’t understand what was going on, but if the raised hairs on the back of his neck said anything, it would be wise to get away from the body as soon as possible. Hand still covering the grip of his blade, he gently but firmly maneuvered Emiyn behind him as the started to move away.

Nio Lancis

"You do have everything, right?"

That morning, Nio had woken early for the day ahead of him. Preparing himself for the list of deliveries to make. He had packed up the herbs the night before to save himself the trouble of doing it later. He tended to do this routinely, for his helped out his auntie where he could by making the deliveries for her. It was never something Nio minded doing, perhaps it gave him the chance to catch his alone time.

"Yeah, everything is here," Nio had turned around when his auntie stepped outside, catching him saddling up his horse, with the packaged herbs and some of his own things tied to the side. Patting the saddle, Nio gave the woman a small nod before he mounted the horse, taking hold on the reigns.

"Do be careful, and deliver it to the right people," she laughed lightly, giving Nio a soft look, before finally waving him off.

There might have been a hint of amusement in Nio's grin as he steered the horse away, finding the small tease somewhat humorous. However, his job to do was already putting him in a bitter mood. He would have only just been leaving Iafern to head towards Roselea where most - if not all, the deliveries were to be made. And Nio being Nio, a man who really didn't pay much attention to the world around him, might not have heard of the rumours spreading around about Roselea. Regardless, it would have been Nio would have quickly dismiss as a someone's paranoia. Never one to take heed warnings, or even to hold belief in mere words. Nio needs to see that facts with his own eyes.

And, surely, he would come to see it with his own eyes.

Upon his arrival to the south of Roselea, he was greeted by an eerie silence and a dark shadow cast onto it. If only then, Nio's shoulder stiffened. Not a single murmur could be heard, or the sight of a bypasser could be seen. It was then, that an unsettling feeling came over Nio. And yet, he continued travelling deeper into the city. Only for Nio to realise that the horse was actually uneasy about this place more than he was.

That was made evident enough when the horse was spooked by a sudden wind that whipped up a few leaves Perhaps it was then that the horse decided it didn't want Nio on its back, and backed up onto his back legs, making the man slide off and fall onto the ground with a loud thud. Regardless of his attempts to hold onto the reigns, it had failed quite miserably, as the fall had been harsh, leaving Nio in a groan as he rolled onto his side. If he had looked up then, he would have seen the horse galloping away in a panic.

His deliveries, his food supply, and his medicine. Were all gone with that horse.

Chizuru Shiga

From restocking to research, Chizuru had every intention for a prolonged stay at the port town of Roselea. The last thing he had on his mind, however, had been having a request oh so politely pushed on him the moment he set foot in town. It wasn’t that the pay was bad, but one sweep of the town was enough to tell him that taking on this job was rather high ranking in terms of “things that are troublesome and should be rejected” if not a request where he’d simply be biting off more than he can chew.

He caught wind of the rumors, but he hadn’t imagined that the situation was this bad.

Glowering at the gnarly undergrowth that he totally didn’t trip on, Chizuru’s frosty gaze stopped short on a silver glint between the cracks in the ground. It was a dagger, and from the looks of it, recently discarded. At this, his expression twisted into a frown. His job was to hunt down whatever or whoever was behind the increase in murder and thievery that was on an extent strange for even a town suffering from a food shortage. Despite this, all he seemed to be able to find were the unfortunate victims or a random object likely indicative of a scuffle. Whoever was behind all this either was quite the glutton or just liked screwing around in the sickest way possible. Perhaps it was even both.

A few walks from the site where he had found the discarded weapon, a particular stench cut through the chilled air like a knife. It was the smell of decay, something that he would never consider welcome. Fortunately or unfortunately, the morning mist had cleared up by late afternoon, so it didn’t take long for Chizuru’s eyes to lock onto the “rot” in question. And with it were a peculiar pair of what seemed to be a young adolescent and a child.

The corpse seemed too decorated to have died naturally from the starvation plaguing Roselea, and it wasn’t everyday that you found people wandering about the outskirts of the port town. Should Chizuru have been a more hasty individual, he would have put two and two together and jumped to the conclusion that he’d found his culprits, but he wasn’t stupid. Chizuru himself could have just as well been found in the exact same situation, and he was sure that he didn’t kill anyone even if it was in his sleep. However, he couldn’t immediately pass them off as completely innocent either.

“Hey!” Just as the older boy began to wheel the younger away, Chizuru let out a short shout to catch the pair’s attention. “This...Did you happen to witness anything prior to this.” Clear emphasis was placed on the word “this” in reference to the dead body that the three had obviously been alerted of the presence of. The exact meaning behind his words was up to their interpretation.

Soldier mode start!
Ayumu Suzukaze

Grip tightening around his blade but thankfully not unsheathing it, Ayumu turned around to meet the gaze of the silver-haired stranger that called out to them. Face uncharacteristically blank, the young bodyguard searched the other’s gaze for the slightest hint of malicious intent or trickery before slowly loosening the grip he had around his weapon and just resting his hand against it. He met Emiyn’s eyes just briefly, looking for any sign that Emiyn had other ideas before flicking his eyes back up to the other man.

Cautiously, with a grim but polite slow shake of his head, Ayumu replied, “No. We chanced upon this...situation just like you did.”

Gesturing towards the corpse, he also carefully added (primarily for their own sake), “Based on the smell and the condition of the body, it is at least a couple of days old. Around three days since it has likely been out here ever since...the death. If you look at the condition of his skin, it seems that the most likely cause of death is starvation...strange as it seems.”

Having finished his impromptu briefing of the situation with the corpse, Ayumu only quietly watched for the stranger’s reaction. The young bodyguard never thought, in all his life, that he would be so glad to have been trained as a soldier instead of taking up some other occupation…yet here he was. Giving a briefing to a complete stranger to make sure he wouldn’t take any rash actions against them.

The silence stopped when there was a loud sound a few streets away. Erika suddenly turned towards there, slightly startled.

If this were an actual horror story, she said to herself while running towards it, I should probably run the opposite direction.

However, turning around the corner, she saw the figure of a man, lying on his side. The first impression that Erika got was that he had rather long hair, and the look between pain and irritation. Tilting her head around them, she found there was no one around them. Yet.

Walking up towards him, she bent over just a little. "Are you alright, mister?" she asked, not offering a hand while waiting for him to get up. She was about to ask whether he was from around here before she remembered the other sound she had heard. "By the way, I had heard the sound of a horse earlier, did you-"

Her words were broken off by a shrill cry. An inhumane scream, that Erika had only in the country. Only horses can scream like that. "Over there!" she said, more surprised than alarmed, as she began to run towards where it was heard.

Within the library, there was now just Cider and what seemed to be a little girl. She sat in the centre of the library floor, dangling her legs from where she was sitting on the table.

"You heading out as well, Cider?" she tilted her head, with a playful smile. "You said that you'll look for them."

There was a dutiful answer given from the three-horned demon before turning around. Gin raised a hand high in the air while waving.

...
...

Vodka got up from where he was kneeling. The human on the ground had lifted her head, hand clutching at the chest where it was all soaked in blood. The way her eyes was getting in and out of focus, despite her face twisted into determined anger and hate. "Hoh...." the vampire amused while staring down. "So you're not one of them. And I had thought I was right."

Beginning to walk away, his sensitive ears picked up on the sounds of a horse. Turning around, a horse was charging towards him. Blind with fear, it didn't change it's direction, as Vodka stepped to the side.

Just as the horse's head had passed by Vodka's head by an inch, an arm shot out in the instance of a flash. The next thing followed, was a thud mixed with cracks of the bones. The vampire's fingers were punctured into the neck of the horse. Its legs tried to flail, but it was futile as Vodka's left arm was keeping it there.

Though his heart was startled by Ayumu's sudden movements, Emiyn settled with a short "it's fine" at his bodyguard's apologies. The two then focused on what was just a short distance away, where the lingering unpleasant odour was coming from.

It wasn't Emiyn's first time seeing a dead corpse, but it was probably the first time he felt equally cold like the body.

He wasn't the only one that seemed unsettled. Ayumu was up and suggesting they leave that very moment, at the same moment someone had arrived upon the scene. The young prince exchanged the briefest of a glance towards Ayumu, simply leaving for his bodyguard to speak first. He had nothing to add to the analysis.

There was a short silence as Emiyn studied the stranger's face. "Do you know this person?" he asked the man, seeing how he wasn't showing signs of shock or extreme disbelief. Probably wasn't someone close. "And... do you know what's happening here? Roselea should not be this quiet and empty... at this time."

Unless, the thought just came to him. They were in the tunnel network?

"My cousin and I... hadn't arrived until about an hour ago." Emiyn said, keeping his hands out in the open to show to the stranger. He gave a few glances back and forth towards Ayumu. "We had seen .... monsters outside the gate... does any of this make sense to you?"

Sparing another minute or two, Nio did not move from his position on the ground. Perhaps the man was just trying to recover from his fall. That, or he couldn't be bother getting up and going aftr his horse.

"Damn," Nio grumbled to himself, watching the horse disappear from sight, and knowing full well that he would never catch up to it, in it's current spooked state.

And only then, at the sound of nearing footsteps, did Nio lift his head to catch a glimpse at the appearance of a stranger. Upon this new arrival, Nio's expression did not change from his current irritation; furrowed brows and a curved frown. Nor the words of the stranger seemed to waver Nio's mood. In response, all the girl got was a grumpy "hm" as Nio began to get back onto his feet.

If not grumpy at the dim throbbing in his back from the fall, Nio was certainly grumpy about the fact that his horse galloping away.

"Yeah, yeah, that was my horse just taking a piss."

And still, he could hear it from here. It's loud neigh was impossible not to hear. Perhaps it he was fast enough, he would be able to reach it, for it sounds as it was just around the corner. But, Nio wasn't particularly in the mood for running. Walking would suffice.

At least for him, even as the girl began to run towards the direction the sound had came from - whose he had yet to have a formal introduction with (not as if Nio was one fond of introduction, or even remotely have a conversation). Yet, Nio didn't throw any "be careful, kid" warning - he frankly might not have cared for the girl's safety, he still trailed after her. If merely just to find his belongings again.

His pace only quickened when the horse let out a sound of distress. Perhaps then, did Nio finally catch up to the stranger, only to find himself at a gruesome scene. It was the blood that had been Nio bit him lip and stare in complete silence.

It was the sight of the horse's neck seemingly punctured and broken by a man's bare hand. Or rather, Nio wasn't sure if he should be referring to the culprit as a human. It didn't seem right, it didn't look right.

"What the fuck."

Chizuru Shiga

Chizuru kept a hawk’s eye on the pair’s every move. A tightening of the boy’s sword and a sharp turn sent him a fraction of a step backwards in order to brace himself for a sudden onslaught. Luckily, the other seemed to only have been reacting upon the potential of a threat, as seen in his decision to subsequently loosen his grip on his sword.

The boy’s words were, to say, smooth. Calm but descriptive, every syllable was easy to digest, and his tone of voice showed not the quaver of a lie. However, it didn’t mean much. Intuition told him that these people were not his culprits, but there was no telling whether or not they were telling a lie of omission. While it was true that the corpse showed visible signs of starvation and that it had been lying here to rot for quite some days, he had known that from the start. There were still several holes in this mystery, and he held a certain tendency as a strict belief: culprits often returned to the scene of the crime.

“...I see.” Chizuru replied with a slight pause. He regretted not immediately turning to leave, however, when the child with the boy he had just questioned started prattling off questions one by one.

Resisting the urge to bring a hand to his face and heave a heavy sigh, Chizuru took a moment to reorganize the questions in his head before finally opening his mouth to respond. “Fortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure of even meeting this man, though it wouldn’t have made much difference otherwise.”

A sudden recollection of the silver dagger he had picked up just a few minutes before brought Chizuru to trudge forward and crouch down hear the corpse to gently place it on the man’s chest. Though he did not know who the true owner of the dagger was, the silverette felt awkward carrying a dead man’s weapon around, ceremonial or not. Plus if anything, hopefully this would suffice in the place of a burial.

“Roselea…” Chizuru brought a stony gaze back towards the pair. “I suppose you have the right to know. Those monsters and these deaths, they’ve become commonplace here. People have been getting desperate, and then there’s the local menace that’s been taking advantage of the turmoil and likely killing for sport as of late.”

Having finished their little question and answer session, Chizuru, on one hand, wanted nothing more to do with the pair. On the other hand, a gut feeling told them that if the travelers got in trouble here, it would only make Chizuru’s own little mission more troublesome. Plus, he owed them an apology of sorts for the sudden accusation he had thrust upon them, especially given the fact that the child's testimony of having "just arrived an hour ago" seemed sincere.

“It’s dangerous to walk around the outskirts of Roselea,” Chizuru started reluctantly, “If you’re looking for something, I can lead you there as an apology for earlier.”

When the silver-haired man had walked towards them, eyeing the corpse, Emiyn had stepped aside, watching carefully what he was doing. He remained quiet until the other had stood up to speak.

As the young prince heard about the current situation from the man, he felt his stomach sank. His eyes fell to the ground for a moment, and he didn't hide his look of anxiety. Before he could ask his questions though, the man had offered himself as a lead around the streets.

Whether it was a wild guess or logical speculation, he was right that the two were searching for something. "I think it would be wise if we take on your offer then, sir." Emiyn replied after a few seconds. He sent a glance towards Ayumu. Despite any objections that he knew his bodyguard may have, the boy didn't feel comfortable simply leaving after hearing the current news.

When seeing that the other two didn't seem to have anything more to inspect from the dead man lying on the ground, he gestured to the man that perhaps it would be best to start walking. Perhaps the quicker the better.

When Erika had arrived at the scene, her foot skid to a stop. Her eyes were wide, simply in surprise at the man that had been holding down the horse that was furiously kicking its legs. Only when she heard a voice of a man behind her, she had turned her head.

It was the long-haired man from earlier.

"Uh oh..." she managed to whisper. "Is... that your horse mister?" She took half a step back as though she was wary, while taking one hand to reach inside her bag.

Hearing the sound of two new footsteps, and Vodka turned to look at the two of them. A girl and an adult man. Neither didn't seem impressive, just like any other human.

However, Gin had warned that the ones they could easy to simply dismiss.

With a quick as a flash, his fingers were yanked out from the horse's neck, and he stood up. Now at full height, he would be about as tall as the other man. Vodka's expression turned into mild curiosity and amusement. Typical of any vampire or demon to enjoy a human's fear and discomfort.

"I don't believe I've seen you three around until recently." he said, briefly referring to the third one that was bleeding and on the floor a few feet away. As he spoke, he cracked his knuckles while rolling up his sleeves. "I am actually looking for someone, or a group actually... that fit a certain criteria. Unfortunately, I don't know what they look like.... so... "

He changed his stance, with one hand clenched into a fist and held pointing towards the man and the girl. He could see that girl's face was slightly more rigid. It seemed like she had caught on what he might be implying.

"I was advised that I'd just have to see for myself."

There was a sudden movement, as he suddenly took two steps ahead, and raised his left arm's fist right towards the man's face.
