Thérnardier Family Tree (for reference)

The Thérnardier family; a recent history

The Thérnardier family began overseas, as a small family of vassals to a lord. Their reliability earned them consistent spots as maids and servants, and one of their number, Hermitage, was even appointed as the lord's personal sorcerer. His exceptional talent was sadly misused, and all mention of him faded from history. His magical legacy was, however, passed onto his great-great-great-grandchildren.

The family eventually moved overseas after a revolution razed their home country. Fortunato's father spent what little earnings the family had on alcohol, and the family was forced to become petty thieves to survive.

Fortunato (head of the family)

He looks like this, but as a dark elf. If anyone reading this has a picture like that, I'd really like to see it.

Fortunato started his life like his father and grandfather did. On the streets. He was forced to pick pockets and steal food to survive... until a family of nobles all died under suspicious circumstances. He used his street smarts and a fair amount of lawbreaking to take their place, learning high class etiquette the hard way. His criminal contacts kept connections with him (for obvious reasons) and he quickly became a prominent figure in the underground community. At the time of the towers' rising, he is 53 years old.

Elise

Elise was born in a middle-class family, had a decent upbringing, was magically inclined, was taught to marry some rich sucker for her benefit, etc, etc. When she learned some lowlife scum had become a noble, she decided that the poor sap would be a suitable candidate. After all, he had no clue how to handle large sums of money, and would be dependent upon her for advice on how to deal with his new surroundings. She didn't count on two things, those being:

A) Fortunato was still an extremely paranoid thief.

B) He was also quite adept at producing children.

Not wanting to be stuck with a child on her own, she decided to stay with Fortunato... and a few more children couldn't hurt, could they? She is currently 46 years of age.

Montresor

Montresor, the oldest and only son of the family. He takes after his father in many ways, specifically in terms of intellect. At a young age he began carrying out minor raids on low-risk targets, earning himself a bit of pocket money. He is sociopathic, nearly devoid of emotion and empathy for his fellow man. Well... there is sister, Crimson. But he fought off that little spark of love, he just keeps her around because she's useful... if difficult. He also has a friends-with-benefits relationship with a barmaid named Griselda.

He was born with a rather odd power, being able to copy the magic used against him. Fortunately, the city guard doesn't know this, or they would've locked him in an AM field years ago. In an ironic twist of fate, he was cut off from his family after being caught embezzling funds for his raids, putting him in the same situation as his father. While Fortunato was impressed by his son's actions, the city police forced his hand. As it was, Montreosr's status was the only thing saving him from a long stew in a cell.

Suzie

Suzie is the more bookish member of the family. Early on, she devoted herself to improving her mind, spending much time in the library. She assisted her father with handling the family's resources, improving their income somewhat. She grew to be a lot like her mother, and eventually married her own rich sucker, Joseph Joetārā. Her brand of magic allows her to see through deception and read people's intentions. She managed to keep this power secret, until Crimson noticed inconsistencies in her stories and rather odd leaps in logic. Suzie is 28 years old as of the towers' rise.

Crimson

Crimson could be described as a sort of diamond in the rough. She has an unusual amount of positivity and cheerfulness for being a Thérnardier, causing much chagrin to her siblings. She followed her brother around a lot as a child, thinking if he had a friend, he wouldn't keep sulking in dark corners and making sarcastic comments to himself. He kept brushing her off. One day, Crimson followed him on a raid. She was spotted by a guard and ran into an alley. When the guard looked in, the redheaded dark elf was gone, replaced by a frightened-looking tabby cat. Reasoning she must've fled, the guard continued his patrol. When Crimson told Montresor of her shapeshifting ability, he suddenly became a lot more accepting of his sister, using her for distraction and infiltration purposes. When he was cut off from the family, she followed him, to 'make sure he doesn't do anything stupid.' She is currently 19.
