n. Therianthropy: the mythological ability of human beings to metamorphose into animals by means of shapeshifting.
For an untold number of years, the scientific world has been oblivious to the darker, supernatural touches that thrive just beneath their society, whom mix in with their own 'normal' kind, and hide themselves from mortal humanity's strictly limited knowledge. They are often the creatures of the night. The tales of wonder, darkness and fear. The roots of all evil, the spawn of sorcery and the cause behind every sinful deed. Children are taught to dread them from their earliest ages. They are the beasts who stalk through the night, steal children from their beds, and eat their entire families raw. Despicable, disgraceful, deadly, dangerous and entirely fantastical and whimsical. These hidden supernatural breeds were once innocent humans who were forced to suffer from the bite of a wild, magical animal and turned unnatural, unholy monsters. But they aren't real. After all, they can't be. Humanity isn't ready yet for that kind of revelation.
There are multiple stories that surround the creation of these unlawful creatures. Some say, that back in ancient times, a plague swept across the lands. It wasn't deadly, but it infected the minds and hearts of women. Young, beautiful and fertile women. All of a sudden, their minds would turn and they would shun the beds of their husbands or lovers in favour of a much worse company. At night, they would creep off into dark recesses of the wild forests and choose to lay with all manner of beast. Wolves, bears, panther, deer, lions, foxes and many more. Which would soon not become a surprise to the believers of this particular story, the women all soon fell pregnant and birthed horrible monstrosities. The human women were immediately put to death for their heinous crimes, but not every creature could be recovered. Thus began the supernatural society.
Another story speaks about the control of witches and sorcery. Those born with unnatural gifts grew a black darkness in their hearts. The utter power and control granted to them turned the minds towards evil acts, corrupting their hearts and souls. Despite the fact that humanity had done these witches nothing wrong, they vowed complete domination and eridication of the 'weaker' species. To enact this terrible plan, they enslaved the eldest and youngest members of society to complete their will, warping them into destructive monsters uncontrollable by the influence of the moon. Panic spread across the world as loved ones shifted into despicable beings and killed the innocent people whom they had once known. Were-animals. Humans influenced by the moon, and the strength of the magic which came with it to create untold danger and death. It was said that only the light could protect the pure hearts of mortal men. The night became feared due to the witches' curses, but not long after the genocide began, man learned to find the sorcerers and burn them under a great, blazing, bright fire. Cleansing and protecting. It is the second most popular story.
The last tale focuses more upon a religious point of view, primarily Christian. It involved the influence of Satan and unholy demons from the darkest pits of Hell. However, as this is not a common theory amongst any community, it is often forgotten. Rightly so, for it is the greatest disparity from the actual truth of their creation.
In modern society, the greatest fear of the supernatural community is not about how their magical circumstances came to arise, but rather of how to survive in a world which would surely be undeniably hostile and prejudicial were they to become discovered. Especially for the youngest members of such a species. Along with dealing with full moons, animal instincts, secret-keeping and constant danger, the vast minority of teenagers with this 'infliction' are also forced to deal with high school. Never easy for a normal kid, impossible for a were-animal.
