Witches have been in our world for many generations, centuries even, since the days of the first human towns and settlements, ancient Shamans passed on their secrets to their descendants and they spread throughout the world, by the time of the Renaissance these Shamans had been re-named to "witches" and the art of magic was only taught to daughters.
It was around this time when the Hunters emerged, orriginally the Hunters were unequivocally the "bad guys" hunting down innocent witches merely for possessing abilities other humans lacked, as well as countless innocents, their authority was abused both by the Hunters themselves and by those who would point fingers and cry "witch!" to settle squabbles and the such, even after the pope, in secret in the 19th century ordered the secret extermination of all hunters, the hunters instead took the witches route, retreating into shadows and teaching their sons the arts of the hunters.
Now, in the 21st century, things like witches and witch hunters are things of legends and myth, to be often mocked on T.V, in movies and books, both sides portrayed both as good and bad, all the while the people are ignorant of the reality of their world.... the hunters and the witches are still very much around, and they are still very much enemies, in the shadows of the world, Witches have their throats slit in dark alleys, witches perform profane rituals to curse the hunters with disease, their wives with miscarriages and so more, all the while fighting their common enemies, such as the various groups which would see them both wiped out, either as part of some "divine mission" or to secretly clear out the skeletons in their closets.
We are, as you would expect, a man and a woman... a witch and a hunter, however we'd never be picked as such. Our characters work in the same building, completely ignorant of each other's secret identities, MC is in accounts management in a financial company's department within this building, YC on the other hand is the receptionist, a receptionist on thin ice at that, her own clumsiness coupled with her crippling low self esteem and social awkwardness make her terrible for a receptionist.
But below both of their exteriors, his being that of a sarcastic but friendly guy who likes to get off his face drunk on weekends and her, a jittery, socially awkward and depressed introvert who is on more medications than she can count, they are both cold, calculating killers who in the shadows show their true colors, that of monsters in human form without pity or remorse for their enemies.
Our characters have known each other for years, mostly through brief morning greetings 5 days a week, however in celebration of the boss's retirement, the whole department has been invited to attend a lavish party at one of the nicest hotels in the city. It is there where MC sees YC barely keeping it together, hoping to lift her spirits he asks her for a dance, which he is able to convince her to agree to. It is during this dance where our character's relationship begins... through subtle movements and his "hunter sense" he deduces that the woman he is dancing with is in fact a witch, and not just any witch, but a master of the arcane! and through a text YC receives from one of her "sisters" she learns that he is in fact "the Surgeon" a highly feared hunter, the kinda hunter that witch mothers tell their witch-in-training daughters about to make them behave, they can't simply lash out at each other in the office, and no matter how much they try, they can't kill the other, not for lack of trying mind you.
Over time and circumstance their relationship changes from indifference (before discovery) to hate and fear, then to a grudging truce, and slowly, to romance.
