The Red Plague
As 2012 came and went, there were plenty of nutters yammering on about the end of the world, about God coming to set the world afire, about the world imploding, about a massive asteroid wiping humanity from the earth - you name it, and someone expected it to happen. And yet, nothing did happen. The world spun on happily, humans going about their business, missing only a few nutters who offed themselves rather than face the minute risk of the Mayans being right.
And so, 2013 passed. And 2014. In 2015, a corporation called Triteon Pharmaceuticals quietly snatched up a recent college graduate, and set him a project. Manipulate a virus, and see what he can do with it. And oh, did he ever impress. Within a year, the virus would attack and kill cancerous cells inside a rat, curing even the most advanced condition. It would assault any hostile virus that entered the body, and devour it, forcing it out of the system, from the lowly cold to the mother of all murderers, the Zaire Ebola virus. A godsend, and one which was rushed out to human testing as fast as possible, even as the brilliant young man was commissioned to again alter the virus.
Two more years, and 2017 came. And with it, the most widespread rioting in human history, known today as the Red Eye Riots. Twelve months, nearly to the day, after the first introduction of the modified virus, released as 'Demex' in its pharmaceutical form, roughly 85% of the dosed subjects- and many individuals who were not dosed, as well, found that their eyes were gradually losing their natural color, becoming the pink of albinism, and then deepening to a bloody crimson. Panicked, thinking that it was a sign of the apocalypse, that it was a terrorist attack, that more than six billion people had been somehow altered at the most personal level, nearly all of civilization simply.. halted, for a week, as widespread looting and violence occurred. Amidst this chaos, no-one found it unusual that the city of Blackridge, an isolated town on the east coast, had been quarantined and blocked off from the world. Six months later, with the world struggling to find its feet, still, the city was firebombed, infernos consuming the city, and wiping away the last traces of life. A day later, every single posted soldier was reported missing in action, or as a deserter.
A week later, that talented man who had worked so hard on this virus found his brother working in the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control, and put six rounds in his head, and then departed. A month later, the truth of everything was plain. Where the outbreaks truly took hold first is nearly impossible to say, but urban centers succumbed to it worldwide in a matter of a few weeks, humans vanishing below a tide of insane men and women and children.
In the US, government and military became fragmented, soldiers abandoned overseas and at home, left defending pointless positions without so much as a whisper of direction. In all of this, in nearly every city, a massive, steel and stone tower stood nigh-untouched, gleaming darkly against the fires of the cities.
No president. No guidance. Not even a trace to be found of the Triteon Corporation, of TriteCorp, as it came to be called, with curses directed to their name. And not even a rumor to be found of why god had forsaken the world. Although.. you are still standing, how? The injection you were given to prevent the cancerous cells from stepping foot in your system mutated, giving you an incredible gift instead of the undead. Lucky eh? You're not alone though.. there's others like you out there. Find them.
