The Mastiff
The Job – Mastiff worked as a Bounty Hunter. He caught criminals, alive or dead.
The Partner – Mastiff worked alongside his partner, Laughing Juniper. Juniper was an amazing swordswoman, and took the front for most of their cases.
The World Upturned – Amelia Siens entered Mastiff’s life and everything changed. He fell in love and married her, and changed his entire outlook on life.
Unrequited Love – Mastiff knew that Juniper had feelings for him, but he didn’t reciprocate. He did not realize how strong those feelings were, or how his marriage would so deeply effect Juniper. She disappeared shortly after the marriage, not saying a word.
A Fiend – A gruesome series of murders sprung up in Mastiff’s territories and he went on the hunt. He worked this case alone, not taking a new partner since Juniper left.
The Chase – Mastiff found the man responsible for the murders, and began to hunt him. The murderer regarded this with faint amusement, and lead Mastiff on a chase.
The Battlefield – Mastiff finally managed to corner the murderer in a series of First Age ruins. To his dismay, he found out that the murderer was an Anathema, a Death Knight.
Newfound Power – Mastiff didn’t back down or try to flee. He vowed to bring this man to justice, and for this vow he was blessed with the power of the Sun. Using his newfound power he quickly overwhelmed and killed the Death Knight, who was woefully unprepared for a fight with a Solar Exalted.
A Memory Etched In Stone – After disposing of the Death Knight Mastiff looked around the ruins. Everything seemed eerily familiar, even though he had never been to the ruins before. A strange impulse lead him deeper into the ruins, where he came upon this Fresco and was flooded with memory fragments from his First Age Life as The Unwavering Lady of the Scales.
The Treasure – These memory fragments lead him to a hidden cavern, where he found a hoard of tremendous wealth and an elemental guardian. The guardian greeted him, recognizing him as the rebirth of its former master. When Mastiff left he grabbed a few items that resonated with him, including his bracers and his gun. Mastiff returns here whenever he needs resources, but he has also opened accounts in the most major cities of the Scavenger Lands (Nexus, etcetera) so he has money available.
Trepiditious Return – Mastiff took a slow route back to his hometown. He walked in quiet contemplation as he questioned what he had become. He didn’t really believe in the Immaculate Faith, but the lesson of Anathema as demons still had some hold over him, especially with the example of the monstrous Death Knight.
Two Loves Lost – Mastiff returned to a horrific sight: his pregnant wife bleeding out on the floor, nearly dead. She was unconscious and died in Mastiff’s arms without rousing.
Old Partner New Tricks – Moments after his wife died, Mastiff was attacked by another Death Knight, but this time one with a familiar face: his old partner, Laughing Juniper. Consumed by her despair and anger, Juniper had engaged in increasingly dangerous solo hunts. As was probably her subconscious intention, she was killed on the last of these hunts. But she did not die, because she was offered a chance for revenge and power by a deathlord. She threw away her name, and is now called Blighted Garden. Garden overpowered Mastiff, who was shaken in his grief, and carried him away.
The Lesser Pain – When he awoke, Mastiff was imprisoned in chains. He was tortured daily, without seeming rhyme or reason. This didn’t bother him much; it was nothing compared to the pain of losing the love of his life.
Dread Lord’s Mandate – After an unknown amount of time Mastiff was brought before the lord of his prison: The First and Forsaken Lion. The First and Forsaken Lion told Mastiff that there would be torture until he embraced oblivion and joined the ranks of his Death Lords. He offered hollow incentives in return: power, wealth, and many others. Mastiff spat in his face and vowed that no torture would break his will.
Torment Revisited - Smiling, The Lion informed Mastiff that he had misunderstood. The torture wasn’t for him; it was for his wife. Seized by sudden dread, Mastiff could only watch as the ghost of his wife was brought before him. She was tortured before his eyes, and Walker promised that the torture would be eternal until he embraced oblivion.
The Sympathetic Soul – Several days after this, days of torture for both him and his wife, Mastiff was approached by another Death Knight in the middle of the day, when the citadel was silent. The Death Knight was named The Shadow That Binds. Shadow offered to secret Mastiff away from the Citadel. Mastiff rejected his offer, telling him that he could have escaped at any time, but he searched for a way to free his wife first.
Love Left Behind - Shadow used cold logic to strip him of this reason, convincing Mastiff that he did not have the power to oppose The Lion yet and that the best course of action would be to escape and gather strength and allies until he could achieve his goal. Mastiff accepted Shadow’s offer and he escaped from the citadel. Shadow stopped on the way out, telling Mastiff that he had to return. Nodding, Mastiff only said “I will be there, if you need me.†Mastiff then turned away from the citadel and his imprisoned wife and fled.
A New Life – Mastiff now wanders the South, performing his old duties but with a far greater range and far tougher targets. He searches for allies, and for ways to gather power to himself, but his main purpose is to serve the cause of Justice. His power has made him a god amongst humans, and he has now devoted his life is to making all people equal before the law, from the lowest slave to the mightiest empress.
