Languishing in Progress
The world had forgotten how long time had passed through, but the dark crevice of history was etched deep in everyone's mind. Hundreds of years ago, the nanomachines went rogue, uncontrollably devouring every patch of land and sky available to man. The sophisticated AI, Brain of Gaia, devised a plan to ensure the continuation of humanity's survival. The Neuro Tower was created above its underground lair to contain as many survivors as possible. After everyone managed to get inside, a strong electromagnetic field was ignited, keeping the nanomachines from coming near the tower.
But there were times when the Brain required manpower to guard the tower. When the electromagnetic field, its power generated from Earth's core, required maintenance, they were turned down. In their place, the Knights, survivors volunteering themselves with their lives at stake, protected the tower from encroaching nanomachines until the field could be turned on once more.
But the story didn't end there just yet, for the Neuro Tower stayed vigilant to find more survivors, although the prospect yielded zero result for the past hundreds of years. But one day. Perhaps, one day, the world could be freed from the nanomachines once more...
The Neuro Tower was divided into three sections vertically. The lower section, staffed mostly by maintenance robots, was the industrial zones producing various needs for the inhabitants. The largest of the three, the middle section, served as habitation sector, with huge cities artifically erected to resemble the cities of age pasts, with buildings rising as high as eyes could see, and artificial sky displayed on the ceiling up above.
The uppermost level was reserved as the headquarters of the Knights. On this level, those sworn to protect Neuro Tower answered to summons from the Brain and retrieved missions. The most important mission is periodical skirmish against the nanomachines as the electromagnetic field undergone maintenance. Out of three layers of the fields, two will be turned off, and it was up to the Knights to fend off incoming nanomachines while robots repaired the field.
Sometimes, however, the mission came abruptly. Sudden shift in the Earth's core created power spike within the generator system, and the outermost and middle field was on the process of turning off. Emergency maintenance was required, and the Knights were assembled once more.
Utilizing the network, the Brain sent summon order to all Knights of Neuro Tower. They were to convene in the topmost level in thirty minutes.
