Blissfulness Blissfulness

It’s been almost a year now since Gilead took over, and it had been nothing but hell for the so called handmaids. Relearning how to speak, learning how to walk, learning the distrust, the ceremonies…being stripped of rights and treated like cattle. Samantha had been quickly thrown through the red center and retrained to be the perfect little handmaid. And after graduating she was posted at a new house the Kellan ‘s. She was folding everything into her suitcase that she needed, and she tenderly tied up her hair and put it under the bonnet.

“Hurry up my dear we wouldn’t want to keep your new family waiting yes?” Aunt Lydia called into the room at the red center. She was alone, the last to leave from her class.

“Yes Aunt Lydia.” She responded in an even tone before putting on her wings and her cloak and heading out the door where Aunt Lydia was waiting.

“Come on girl we haven’t got all day.” Aunt Lydia said, “God has blessed you with a gift, and we musn’t waste any time.” She said as she ushered the girl out the front of the red center and to her new home.

“Yes Aunt Lydia.” She responded, trying to not let any of the hate seep into her voice. The last thing she wanted was to be shocked with one of those god damned cattle prods. She got in the back of the car with Aunt Lydia as they were driven to her new how.

“Listen very closely, you have the privilege of being assigned to one of the greatest commanders Gilead has to offer. From now on you will be known as OfRob. Do you understand?” Aunt Lydia quizzed her looking for any sign of weakness.

“Yes Aunt Lydia.” She responded as the car stopped. Aunt Lydia ushered her out of the car and knocked on the door.

“Stand up straight.” She whispered to the girl, as Samantha fixed her posture and the door opened.

“Blessed Day Mrs. Kellan.” Aunt Lydia said to the woman that answered the door. The wife, Julia Kellan, was a slender woman with brown hair and blue eyes tied in a conservative bun. She gave Aunt Lydia a tight-lipped smile.

“Blessed Day.” She responded. “Please come in.” she said. But Samantha found it hard to move from her spot. It was like she was glued there out of fear.

“Go on girl.” Aunt Lydia urged almost forcing her into the house. Giving her her things and closing the door behind her.
