Background:

Isobel came out the womb singing rich notes, if you believe her mother. She was born singing and simply never stopped. She got all the solos at her parish’s choir and even sung at a few public events every now and again. Most people from her small town assumed that her singing would peter out into a Sunday morning hobby like all the rest.

Isobel was determined to take her fate into her own hands and chase opportunity. And who else better to join her than her talent MUSICIAN best friend who’s been accompanying her for most of her life. The search led her to New York City where the two performed at gigs that often offered them little in the way of payment more than a drink and a meal. Eventually, they got lucky with scoring a job at The Half Note. Isobel is finally so close to achieving her dream and she won’t let anything hold her back now.

Ambitions/Goals:
  • break success on the stage
  • become like her parents and make the Richards fame continue
  • find herself a nice man so she wouldn't be alone anymore
Background:
Being the only daughter of Frank and Vivian Richards has never been easy. Frank was a popular jazz singer and trumpet player. All clubs were happy to have him for the night and New York definitely knew his name. Vivian made it on Broadway. She wasn't some big shiny name but she was still pretty famous in the inner circle. They both worked hard for their success and foe establishing the Richards name on the map of show business. Naturally, when their daughter was born, they tried to develop all her skills.

From very early age, Annabelle attended many classes, ballet, tap dance, showdance, acting classes, she even had a voice coach. Her mother was very proud of the progress her little girl was making but as it usually is, mother never really sees her children in the right light. Annabelle was...average. Maybe even less than that. Her teachers were trying their hardest but she simply never excelled. She had the looks but other than that only did okay, never went over a certain level. Of course, she was told that and despite her mother feeding all those hopes in her, Anne knew that if she was going to make it, she had to work twice or thrice that hard. Her father saw the real truth as well and practiced with Anne in his free time but despite all the eagerness and willingness to succeed, the girl remained stuck.

Annabelle refused to give up. She strongly believed that somewhere deep down, her talent is sleeping and being the Richards daughter, she had to wake it up. That's why she didn't go to her father's European trip but stayed at home with all her tutors and teachers and spent her days inside. In the morning, she had her homeschooling classes and in the afternoon and evening, she worked on her performing skills. But tried as she might, she was no dancer, no actor, no musician...and definitely not a singer.

Then the hardest blow came. As her parents were coming back from Europe, their plane had an accident and no one on it survived. In a matter of seconds, Annabelle became orphan and sole heiress of the Richards fortune. She spent months in her room, barely eating, barely sleeping. Nothing made sense anymore and at first, Annie didn't even want to continue. But later on, she realized that her parents' message was living in her and she needed to step her game up like never before. That's how she got to The Half Note. She spends a lot of time there these days, mostly sitting at the bar, indulging in her glass of bourbon, listening to other people perform and enjoy the applause and daydreams about the day when her career will finally be launched.

She has a few performances once in a while but sees that the audience is not as responsive as they used to be to her father. However, that has never discouraged her and she tries. Again and again and again. Because one day...one day...it has to happen. Even for her...

Other:
  • loves romantic movies and indulges in going to the pictures alone (that way she can occasionally cry and no one knows)
  • is a decent cook and baker
  • always carries a gun in her purse, just in case as NYC is a dangerous place for a lonely girl

He got into trouble constantly, paying little attention in school and getting involved in gangs and drunks. This was until in his mid teens when he met Isobel, he was initially ambivalent against her but somehow she wormed her way through to him and the two became close friends. Despite some initial misgivings from the parents, Noah had found a family with the Fletchers becoming common feature at dinners. His first experience with music is when Isobel's mother began teaching some piano and he became hooked. It was a long until he and Isobel did duet.

With Isobel's parents encouragement, he began to improve his act keeping clean and doing better in school. However more than once he regressed and was cut off from the family, still he found his way back. It seemed only couple of years ago after sort stint in jail, things with him began to settle. Unlike Isobel, he was not so sure of his path, he was good at music but was still unsure if that is what he really wants to do. However when Isobel wanted to seek her fortune, he could not abandon her so followed, he owned her too much not too. Still after so long on the road, his patience is staring to ware thin.

Ambitions/Goals:
-make music that matters to him

-find love and/or happiness

Background:
Miles has lived in the city his entire life and he can’t imagine going anywhere else. One of many children in a large Catholic family, he grew up surrounded by music. His father was the choir director at their church, his mother taught piano, and all of their children sang and played instruments with varying degrees of success. But Miles took to it like a fish to water. As soon as he could speak he was singing and he’d sit in on every piano lesson he could, waiting for the students to leave so he could have his turn.

But church music and church in general didn’t keep his attention long and there was plenty to see in the city. As a high schooler Miles would slip out late at night in search of something more. If he couldn’t lie or charm his way into a club he’d hang around on the sidewalk, straining to listen through the dimly lit glass. It annoyed his parents to no end but nothing seemed to be able to stop him. His Uncle John, an accomplished musician in his own right, encourage the boy’s more eclectic tastes and would let him hang around his studio as long as he cleaned up and ran errands. Once he left high school that turned into his full time gig and he started finding work with bands, even just singing in the subway when money was tight. For a while things were going good- the Half Note was finally letting him perform, he was in talks to cut a demo, everything was falling into place.

Then the war came. And when Mile’s name came up on the draft he found himself huddled on the back of a plane with dozens of other scared young men. He was gone for the better part of a year and suddenly reappeared about a year and a half ago. For the most part he’s the same boisterous, outgoing guy he always was. But there’s a sadness in his voice now that he can’t seem to shake.

Outside of his regular gigs at the Half Note, he works at his uncle’s studio as a session musician, mostly doing jingles to make ends meet. Despite having built somewhat of a name for himself he seems reluctant to move forward with it.

Other:
-more or less forced to attend a family dinner every Sunday. It’s been especially strained since he came home from Korea- no one in his family understands why their little prodigy keeps performing in clubs and commercials.

-big night owl, often doesn’t wake until noon.

-Voice & Piano

Role: The Head bartender

Name: Ilya Bekker

Gender: Male

Hometown: Bethpage, NY

Orientation: Gay, heavily closeted.

Appearance
THatboi.jpg

Relationships: Rose Bekker (mother), Julian Bekker (father)

Hobbies/interests: Fantasy novels, radio dramas, gossiping with anyone and everyone, swimming

Likes: Grapes, lemongrass cologne, strawberry soda.

Dislikes: Raisins, sandlewood, anything that has mint in it.

Positive traits
  • Good listener
  • hospitable, eager to please others
  • excellent at keeping secrets
  • full of energy
  • happy at work
Negative traits:
  • Gossip
  • outwardly cold outside of work
  • having a hard time opening up to others
  • Completely unaware of social cues when it comes to anything outside of his job
  • Constantly losing track of himself

Ambitions: Own his own bar one day! A little hole in the wall with quiet music and solid security where he can run the show and hopefully make a life for himself.

Background:
Started off a straight-A student until middle school, Ilya had a desire to become a radio show host, and eventual technician for any station that would take him. This needed some higher schooling and know-how that he did not have at the time, and after being denied multiple scholarships found himself in a bad case of needing to pay for the lessons that he so dearly wanted, A job was open at a local spot that was known for troublesome patrons and multiple robberies. He took it knowing they were desperate to have anyone there even if they never had any experience in mixing drinks before.

Bartending was the last place Ilya ever wanted to be, but after doing it to pay for higher education sparked a passion for serving others and being a part of their lives in a way that many weren't privy too. He enjoyed the power of cutting someone off when they had too much and the trust of his regulars. After doing this for a while Ilya never went back to school, and so only has a high school diploma to his name. Though that was enough to keep him in the bartending scene. Knowing the more exciting clubs offered better pay he found himself at The Half Note and never left.

To experience the "American dream" though she's not entirely sure what that means, but to at least make it on her own in such a foreign country.

Peillon, despite being such a small village a top of mountainous landscape, holds a devoutly catholic population with almost hasidic-like behavior. As if all they knew & believed in was Jesus and his verses, hell, they didn't even acknowledge science! It truly was an awful place to live in for wandering minds such as Maggie's. For, many of the civilians had strictly believed in keeping their community alive and well, taking whatever measures & precaution to do so. From marriage ceremonies every other week (a lot were arranged but there had been a select few that'd been forced), to educations for even the brightest being cut short, once you enter Peillon, you may never leave. Though luckily, Maggie's family was of the more progressive kind, well, as progressive as they could get. For the two daughters were taught how to read and write at an early age, had learned of their rich histories and culture and, when the time came, would be allowed to marry whomever from the village (within reason of course). But again, they were not allowed to leave.

And so, when the time had come for Maggie to fulfill her "womanly" duties of marriage, children and homemaking, she'd run away. Well, to be completely fair though, she most likely wouldn't have had her mother (who acted as the boss of the De Leon household) cooperated in the first place. You see, Maggie had already reached past her prime teenage years when the decision had been made for her to marry and thus, was considered one of the "older" brides. Making it very difficult to find at the very least, a decent husband. In fact, all she was left with was poor ol' Hubert, a man who's previous wife had died (though after meeting him, Maggie reckons that she killed herself), but moreover, a man who considered bird watching and manual-reading his favorite past-times. And when she learned that, the brunette realized that she had to get out of there fast, she had to actually live her life, before she ended up watching birds with him or reading manuals alongside the old man. And so, having heard many stories of the Big Apple out west, Maggie had made a run for it in the dark of the night, just days before her ceremony. Although, even with the help of her older sister, things had proven to be quite difficult quite fast... Let's just say that she would never look at a goose the same way again.

_O T H E R_

Maggie often gets distracted by watching all of the performers well, perform. Though she can't help it! She admires their courage to stand up and belt whatever they have in them, it truly is a gift to not be taken for granted.

Being quite new to the American world, Maggie isn't very familiar with the cultural customs and greetings just yet. It has led to very, very unfortunate situations.

Similarly, though she has a good grasp on the language, there are many idioms, catch phrases and greetings that are foreign to her. Many complex English linguistics in general give her a particularly hard time. Though, with the aid of a small pocketbook, she's often found reciting new or old words she's come across during her first few months here and will consistently continue to interrupt conversations to take note of newer ones.

Ambitions/Goals:
To become a famous comedian known across the country and make as many people smile as possible.
To cure her mother's condition.
Repay her sister for her generosity.

Background:
No, Marty was not born in the big city, and although she detests the stereotypical portrayal of southern states she cannot escape the fact that she was born, and raised on a farm. Yes, the one with cows. Sadly, she must have inherited all of the recessive traits, for she is the scrawniest little thing you would ever see, especially when paired with the rest of her family, it is a wonder how she even survived being the youngest of seven. This is amplified by the fact that her birth held a lot of controversy. Her mother, was her father's first wife, but by the time of her conception his father had taken up a new wife; needless to say, that led to some complications in the family dynamic. She was never able to get super close with her step-mother. That is not to say that she was treated horribly, but given what Marty represented it was always difficult for them to grow close. Moreover, this also affected her relationship with her father sense he always seemed to resent her existence. The dynamic with her brothers and sisters was normal, well as normal as one could expect with this family.

As Marty grew older, It became apparent to that Marty was definitely the runt of the litter. Her grades were just average, she wasn't really considered a southern belle if you know what I mean. (This always made it awkward when someone said she looked just like her mother.) Although she was tom boyish, she had no real talent for the farm life; in fact, she had no clue what she wanted to do with her life. The only thing she could do was work even harder to some unknown destination, for it was all she could do to keep from getting left behind. There would be one person who would disagree with those who would claim Marty was a talentless, undesirable woman; her biological mother. She became sick with an incurable disease and was pretty much bed ridden. Half of the family flew to New York, since she had been moved to that hospital, to visit her. This was mainly for Marty's sake sense she had never met the woman. Although she was only 13 at the time, she was the only one that could get Marleen to smile. You could say, it was from here on that Marty discovered her talent for making others smile. After several discussions, her oldest and only biological sister who had been taking care of their mom, arranged for Marty, at her own request, to remain in New York. Adjusting to New York was difficult, but Marty believed it was a major upgrade from falling into cow...well some details are unnecessary. It was through this hardship that Marty would make her way to the big stage.

It was her oldest sister who would be the first to chase the stage. To make ends meet she would often perform at bars and clubs as a singer, and her boyfriend was her manager. Marty would have to tag along since she didn't want to be at the apartment by herself; however, she did get free shows...even if she wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. Eventually, Marty fell in love with the entire scene, particularly the comedians who brought smiles to everyone's faces, just as she brought a smile to her mother whose condition appeared to be improving with every visit. Finally, when the sun had begun to set on her sister's dream, the dawn had just arrived for Marty. Through hard work, perseverance, and a little luck, Marty's name began to circulate and that was when she found herself on the doorstep of Half Note.

Other:
She was born in Oklahoma, but also spent half of her life in New York clubs and bars. She might have a few bad habits that don't suit her in the slightest.
