julian sutcliffe met katie dickens and fell in love with her instantly. she was gorgeous, confident, educated, and he was head over heels before their first date. katie did not care for him nearly as much, an ugly woman at heart who wanted to manipulate julian and use him to get the stable lifestyle she always wanted. she was a gambler, burning through her inheritance, and julian's money gave her the security and knowledge that even if she became broke, she'd still live the same luxurious life.


theodore was born first out of the three sutcliffe children only months after the wedding. their first little girl, delilah, followed a year afterwards and finally after another year, daphne was born. the children got along splendidly, although delilah and theo were always closer to one another than they were to little daphne; the youngest was a dreamy child, always lost in her own little world. when theo was fifteen julian finally came to his senses and divorced katie despite the fact that doing so benefited her financially; he was heart broken when he realised he had been used and wanted to cut ties. theodore and daphne remained with their father, but delilah moved with katie to paris, where they stayed with katie's lover for a while.


a year afterwards, katie disappeared. some speculated that it was a murder, others that she'd overdosed by mistake and died somewhere and never been found, others claimed she simply ran away. delilah returned to live with julian and her siblings, more defensive and silver tongued than she had been before-- she resembled katie more than her younger self. everything was fine for a couple of years, but the children were left orphaned when julian passed away from an illness he'd kept a secret; at the age of nineteen, theo inherited everything.
