The Equestrian military is made up of three primary groups; the Solar Guard, the Lunar Guard, and the Eclipse Guard. Each of these military branches has further sub-categories where speciality soldiers fall into.

The Solar Guard makes up the majority of the forces (roughly 70%) and is the main fighting force of Equestria. The solar guard has several different subclasses within its ranks and in general, is less deadly but more widespread than the Lunar Forces. Solar Guards are often in Canterlot or stationed around Equestria at bases. They are allowed to have family lives. Princess Celestia is the co-general of Equestria, the co-general of the Eclipse Guard, and the general of the Solar Guard.

The Lunar Guard makes up 25% of the military. They are the main ‘special forces’ of Equestria. Members of the Lunar Guard are expected to go anywhere and do anything, without question. The Lunar Guard is generally more well trained and equipped than the Solar Guard, but doesn’t have nearly as many in its ranks. They are allowed to have family lives, but it is looked down upon. Princess Luna is the co-general of Equestria, the co-general of the Eclipse Guard, and the general of the Lunar Guard.

The Eclipse Guard makes up the remaining 5% of the military. It is made up of only unicorns. Due to most unicorns only being able to cast basic magic and things related to their cutie mark, finding unicorns powerful enough to do otherwise is outside the norm, resulting in this being a small branch of the military. Regardless, it is the backbone of many of Equestria’s operations. Eclipse Guards are expected to accompany Lunar Guards on dangerous missions when requested. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna look after this branch equally.

Together, the Equestrian military forms the most advanced and deadly army on the planet. With the Lunar Forces spearheading the enemy, the Solar Forces providing the bulk of the following soldiers, and the Eclipse Guard providing magical support, they can conquer nearly any foe.

The branches of the Equestrian military are as follows. Keep in mind that not every Lunar Guard or Solar Guard has a specialization. Most are grunt soldiers.

  • Solar Guard: The bulk of the Equestrian army. They are the most widespread of the military. While not as deadly as the lunar forces, they are still well equipped and vigorously trained.
    • Vindicator: Known also as ‘Paladins’, these righteous knights fight for the protection of all Equestrian citizens. To become a Vindicator, one must show unwavering loyalty to the crown and Equestria’s citizens. Only then may they be selected for Vindicator training.
      • Most ponies picture unicorns clad in heavy plate-mail and wielding holy magic when they think of Paladins, but earth ponies and pegasi also make up these ranks.
    • Cleric: These are members of the Eclipse Guard who have shown an affinity for healing magic. They are taken in by the Solar Guard and their healing skills are nurtured into something powerful. These are not your everyday nurses and doctors, but are ponies with the power to mend broken bones in an instant.
      • Clerics belong to both the Solar and Eclipse Guards. As an Eclipse Guard, they may at any time be sent along with the Lunar Guards.
    • Templar: Sometimes confused with Paladins, Templars are the special attack force of the Solar Guard. Templars are ruthless and have unwavering loyalty to Princess Celestia. All races are accepted into the Templar order. They wear medium armor and use large warhammers as weapons.
      • Many call Templars cultists, but their effectiveness cannot be denied. They are well known for disliking Lunar Guards.

  • Lunar Guard: The smaller minority of the Equestrian army. They are better equipped and more rigorously trained than the Solar Guards, but are also put in more dangerous positions. Lunar Guards spearhead the army, carving through foes or sneaking in to sabotage the enemy. They are expected to die fighting.
    • Nightmares: The elite melee fighters among the Lunar Guard, outrivaling any Solar Guard. They are picked by Princess Luna personally and have a training routine made by her. They are trained to use two weapons, light armor, and leave mutilated corpses in their wake. Nightmares specialize in sabotage and assassination.
      • Only bat ponies may be Nightmares. Nightmares were first created by Nightmare Moon herself during the Eclipse War, when bat ponies were made. There are rumors that Nightmares consume flesh to gain powers, and the mention of their name strikes fear into the hearts of enemy militaries.
    • Death Knights: Known by their distinctive terrifying armor, Death Knights are the Lunar Guards most fear-inducing force. If Nightmares scare enemy forces, Death Knights will cause them to flee the area. Wielding specially crafted magical blades and wearing black full-plate armor adorned with skulls and other gruesome items, Death Knights are always at the front of the Lunar Forces engagements.
      • Any race may be a Death Knight. Death Knights are expected to cause unnecessary pain to their enemies and spread fear through their ranks.
    • Inquisitors: Little is known about the Inquisitors. They are rarely ever seen in battles. Inquisitors are a small group of Lunar Guard, who specialize in torture and assassination. They kidnap individuals, torture information out of them, and then the bodies simply… Disappear.
      • Inquisitors are so good at their job that the rest of the Lunar Guard believes they are a myth. Any race can be an Inquisitor.
    • Shadowmancers: These are members of the Eclipse Guard who have shown an affinity for shadow magic. They are taken in by the Lunar Guard and their magical skills are nurtured into something powerful. Shadowmancers are experts at illusion magic, as well as necromancy.
      • Due to being both Lunar and Eclipse Guards, they are expected to help Solar Guards whenever required.

  • Eclipse Guards: A special unicorn-only section of the Equestrian military. Unicorns with the ability to use magic outside of their cutie mark is rare, so they are highly treasured. While some Eclipse Guards show specialization at specific magics, such as Shadowmancers and Clerics, most cover a general area of spells. The areas are;
    • Abjurer: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of abjuration. These spells focus on protecting, blocking and banishing.
    • Conjurer: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of conjuration. These spells focus on summoning creatures or objects.
    • Diviner: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of divination. These spells bring knowledge to the caster.
    • Enchanter: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of enchanting. These spells imbue objects with power. Unicorns in this school are also taught how to craft items.
    • Evoker: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of evocation. These spells manipulate energy, to create blasts of lightning, cold or fire from nothing.
    • Illusionist: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of illusion. These spells alter perception or create false images.
    • Necromancer: The only school that is ‘illegal’. Necromancers are kept around, but are out of the public eye.
    • Transmuter: An Eclipse Guard who specializes in the school of transmutation. These spells alter the recipient in some way, such as granting increased strength or speed.
