silky, ebony tresses that fall just above her lower backβ xueying's hair would be a beautiful canvas if only someone would paint on it. with a lack of accessories to embellish any fancier hairstyles, she's often defaulted to simple braids and simpler updos.
description:
pretty, but only enough to have you spare her two more glances; delicate, but the cracks that threaten to form would only further diminish her value; a classic beauty, but with a timelessness that's marked by an expiry date. every compliment comes with a criticism, but at the root of it all is pity. so much potential, if only she dressed better or made up better or smiled a little more. what a waste of a pretty face!
if only.
style:
xueying has always dressed rather simply (and conservatively). though it was hardly her choice, she has grown accustomed to dressing in such a manner. there is a difference between routine and desireβ she would like to be able to dress up somewhat extravagantly, at least some of the time.
it's terrible, you see: to have nothing to offer but everything to lose.
personality
here lies princess huiyunβ beloved princess, star academic, wise beyond her years and so beautifully compassionate. and here stands nalan xueyingβ she is but a shell of herself, the mere holder of a title that fails to live up to it, the burnt cinders of what should have been a dazzling star.
at her core, xueying hasn't changed as much as she thinks. she still holds a brilliant wit and an unbreaking love for her people; but with her voice stifled until it had grown hoarse, perhaps her worst enemy is her own perceived desolation. one can't blame her for falling into such despairβ after all, if you have felt the rumble as the castle walls fell, what reason do you have to believe it still stands?
by far, she is not optimistic. she knows where she stands, mourn it as she might, but knows just as well that position mandates her tripping over feet and enduring the scornful eyes. through it all, she remains frustratingly kind and even more frustratingly naive. her defences are mounted (as much as she can manage) but the bites sting regardless; her resentment festers, but as does her esteem plummets, and though she trudges on so unfailingly, by the time she stumbles through the snakes' den, there might not be anything left to bury.
yet, amidst the grasp of the darkness that seems to plague her life, there is light in her eyes. dim, flickering, but a light nonetheless. the last of her honour stubbornly remains alight by the duty she still holds towards her people, her family, all that she holds dear. xueying is determined to keep it lit until it no longer has a reason to burn anymore, but it is threatened by so many winds she worries mere determination is not enough.
and when that happens, perhaps she, too, will be laid to rest.

perhaps it is fitting to begin her story with a "once upon a time". nalan xueying is named after the brilliantly beautiful winter that heralded her birth, and her growing years are similarly star-studded. featuring a classic princess, renowned for her beauty and wit, beloved by her parents, her people; it is nothing short of a fairytale, the kind of life little girls dream of having while tucked into their beds. even xueying's time at the academy is similarly perfect, quickly rising amidst the ranks of academic and social alike, alongside an unwitting rivalry with a boy she barely knows.
she reaches for the heavens, her place in the world so secured.
until the ground shifts beneath her; she plummets, but a falling star streaking across the night sky.
the beginning of her descent is surely the death of her mother. there was no hiding her grief, and there would be no defences against the schemes of the second queenβ a classic villainous stepmother, if there was ever oneβ coveting the empress' position so eagerly. her presence in school withers until there is nothing left but the ashes of what could have been, and xueying is continuously set up for ruin as the queen gains more power.
by the time she graduates, there is not a breath about her, because that is the best she can manage; to simply not be labelled a failure, even if the gazes cast upon her have turned from admiration to a disgraceful mix of sympathy and dismay.
there should be a turning point here, right about now, except there is no fairy godmother or handsome prince on a white horse or a magical beanstalk; xueying is a princess in a fairytale that isn't a fairytale, because there is no "happily ever after" for her.
and now, her father, her last possible ally in the prison of a royal palace, has been whisked away by the calls of an unnecessary war. the second queen wields as much power as an empress even without the title, and all xueying hears of the world outside the frigid confines of the palace are the cries of her people. there is so much she wishes she could do, but desire amounts to nothing in reality, and the helpless princess spends her days letting her resentment tear her apart from the inside.
an almost-wilted rose soon to be discarded; the remnants of a story that will be written off the pages.
history
relations
emperor xuanzu
though xueying was always closer to her mother, there hadn't been a doubt in her mind that her father loved her quite dearly; he had never been stingy with affection, at least, up until empress qisun passed. from there, their interactions trickled into infrequency with fault that lies on both parts, and admittedly xueying holds some resentment towards her royal father for even bringing the second queen into the palace to begin with.
to his credit, emperor xuanzu did everything within his means to protect his daughter, but there is only so much he can do without losing the favour of his most powerful advisor. what was once a close father-daughter bond has now become a frail, frigid relationship that xueying wishes she could repair, but has no idea how to do so.
queen jia
the villainous stepmother; the second queen; the never-empress. queen jia comes from the impressive ducal house of feng, though her reputation was diminished after she was widowed some years after giving birth to her daughter. she was subsequently wedded off to the emperor to raise her family's power, though queen jia has always been intelligent and ambitious herselfβ she craves the title of empress, both for the sake of her family and for her own prestige, and though she has managed to sink xueying's position through countless schemes, her husband has remained adamant on leaving the empress' seat empty.
since giving birth to a young prince three years ago, her power has almost continued to grow. it seems inevitable she will be sat upon the throne by the time emperor xuanzu returns from war.
princess meiyang
queen jia's child from her previous marriage, zhiqing was brought into the palace when xueying is eight, and the two have been at odds since. it is worth noting zhiqing has always been hostile towards her younger sister with a key point-of-contention her lack of royal blood, even if she was conferred a royal title of princess meiyang. she has assisted her mother in sabotaging xueying (though with far less finesse), and though not as ruthless, is even pettier and just as spiteful.

what makes zhan yanxing so desirable?
most, if not everyone on their first encounter with him understands that there is something different about yanxing. their first impression proposes yanxing as a composed man, a strong determination and passion to care for his kingdom, his land. his posture tall and proud, not a single care on his face, prying eyes following his every move, watching the way he confidently strides into the room, a facade of grace and charm. the pull of getting closer. to keep watching, keep listening. it can get to the point where you want to follow him, to listen to his every word; even if you donβt know why.
although, of course. you know what they always say: there is more to such a character than what meets the eye.
subtly unhinged, he is a strange mix of planning and unpredictability, with a madness simmering behind an otherwise calm demeanor. yet there's something alluring about him, whether it's the way he conducts himself or the way he speaks, effortlessly stringing words together. a deceptively complex performance designed to fool others into believing that prince jianwu is anything other than the soul fractured by his father all those years ago. he is neither nefarious nor without remorse. aware of the anguish he has caused. there is no comfort in the suffering of those who are undeserved, yet it is all for the sake of survival.

his world was vibrant and rosy. as shown in the classic, the beloved crown prince was born into a powerful and wealthy royal family, he was happiest when held in the strong arms of his father, a place where he was safe and protected from the rest of the harsh cold world.
ever since birth, the young prince, zhan yangxing had been spoiled and pampered; anything he asked for was quickly granted, and nothing was beyond of reach. how would he react when faced with a challenge after being accustomed to everything going his way? as an unknown rivalry blossom from a young age, when a young princess appears and takes away his position as an outstanding student throughout his school years.
she went in the same brash and stunning manner in which she had entered his life. as if she had never been there, she slipped through his fingertips. perhaps the modest friendly rivalry has evolved into something more. as she consumed his thoughts day and night. yet once more, he finds himself alone in the hollow world. so he succumbs to his father's presence, the source of everlasting comfort and safety.

king shengchi
yanxing is incredibly reliant on his father, more than any normal child, and it continues on until adulthood. perhaps itβs because of his authority figure, or because king shengchi was just his only source of comfort and warmth ever since he was a toddler. his father has a peculiar impact on him. driven by a desire for recognition and validation, he blindly obeys every single command given to him like a mindless puppet, no matter how ridiculous it is as if brainwashed.
queen jingyi
he and his mother never had a close relationship. not even the slightest bit. there is no particular reason why, they just donβt click at all. it doesn't affect him in any way at all, after all, queen jingyi has always been a distant mother ever since his childhood. sheβs probably not too fond of children.
princess xinyu
the one and only person who has to put up with yanxing's relentless whining. they're closest friends despite the fact that xinyu is the embodiment of an angel and yanxing should be 5 feet deep in hell. believe it or not. having known each other since childhood, theyβre already practically siblings.
