The Dying World Beneath

Humans and supernatural creatures have never meshed well. If you read folktales, or read old religious texts, than you might already know why. In the times they've interacted, things have never ended well. That's why, long ago, supernatural creatures began retreating underground. Some already lived there, most relocated, but over time, it became home to almost all of them. The underground civilization they built never received an official name, but eventually became referred to as 'The Dying World Beneath'. Nowadays, though, most just call it all the 'Beneath'.

A sect of the Beneath's federal government, the Mythological Preservation Alliance (MPA), has been scrupulous, and controversial, in it's work of cleaning up traces of supernatural existence from human society. In fact, in the modern day, it has managed to succeed almost entirely. Few humans exist with knowledge beyond myth of the supernatural, and those who do face risk, failure, and futility in attempts to share it. After all, if magic exists, why hasn't anyone found proof of it before now?

In this way, human and supernatural societies successfully divided themselves off. Even races who exist off of humanity have been able to live mostly apart from them. This arrangement, though harsh at times, has kept both factions safe, and the supernatural public has, mostly, become complacent. They have almost every luxury that the surface does, after all - and some, even, that it doesn't. So, most asked, why would they want to leave?

Until the demons appeared, anyway. Now Hell's rising up from the ground and Heaven's coming down to Earth, in an unscheduled apocalypse. To save their homes, supernatural and human societies are going to have to work together. But will it finally be possible, after all this time?

Deepvale

Situated beneath London, Deepvale is one of the largest and oldest communities of the Beneath. Supernatural creatures of this city are much like any other, living mundane lives that much mirror the world on the surface. The fake sun rises in the east, the government is tight on it's borders, and almost everyone's looking for love. That last point in particular is an important point: finding love. To that end, there's the dating program.

The Dating Program

'Love' means something different to everyone, but the dating program that has been set up all across the Beneath is mostly focused around the procreative part.

You don't necessarily have to have children. You don't even have to be looking for a committed relationship. But the stated goal for the program is the bolster the supernatural population, which, in many species, has been dwindling as of late. There are plenty of reasons, but the biggest one is that's simply an undertaking, with travel across the Beneath being limited and no legality in trying on the human-centric Internet. So, as you might expect, between that big hurdle and a myriad of smaller ones, a major, stream-lined effort like the Dating Program been considered revolutionary. Many supernatural creatures have flocked to be included in it, and while some races have a surplus, almost all of them have a shortage, and that can be a problem when picking who's allowed in these early stages. Especially for races that have fight to be considered worthy of preserving in the first place.

With that, the currently limited seating, and the sometimes contentious ways candidates are chosen, not everyone's so happy with how it's turning out. Though public perception of it has been mostly positive, there few who aren't are growing more restless each day, and tensions about it are quickly coming to a head.

Hunter's Guild

For much of history, there have been human groups dedicated to the eradication of supernatural creatures. However, in the modern day, where proof of their existence is carefully kept from the public, and supernatural interaction with the mundane has been tightly restricted, those groups have become far and few between. Enter the Hunter's Guild, situated unwittingly on the surface above Deepvale. It's currently the top dog organization dedicated to that cause of eliminating supernatural creatures, and probably the only one you'll ever hear about if you have a serious interest in hunting. Only a small percentage of humans are aware of supernatural presence enough to have an opinion on it, but a small percent of billions still adds up to more to a little more than the MPA can handle, and...

You see, the few humans who do have run-in's with the supernatural generally don't have good experiences. Members of the underground interact as minimally and discreetly with humanity as they can, so when a human finds themselves brushing up against the supernatural, it's probably one of the few who refuse to comply with the underground's walls and rules. And that usually means trouble for whoever's unlucky enough to stumble across one them. As a result of unfortunate incidents caused by these rogue elements, and information spread by the Guild, most humans aware of the presence of supernaturals generally don't view them favorably, and commonly seek to keep others safe from them however they can.

It's also worth mentioning, though: the pay for the Guild is pretty good, largely due to the courtesy of the Hauer family. So, some hunters are just in it for the money. That's also just how some people find the Guild and learn about supernaturals, too; following a promising job lead that ends that changes their understanding of the world as they knew it. All the same, the guild doesn't discriminate. For whatever reason you're interested in helping end the presence of aberrant forces that plague good London, you're welcome in the Guild.

The Mythlogical Preservation Alliance (MPA)

A branch of the government tasked with the responsibility of upkeeping the secrecy of the supernaturals. At the beginning of the Beneath, they were afforded many special rights and privileges in the interest of making the Beneath safe that they have kept to this day, making them a fearsome force to both human and supernaturals alike. On a whole, while weary of their power, the people of the Beneath largely see them as a necessary evil. It's members are generally thought highly of, except among races who their restrictions and misuses of power usually effect. They are responsible for protecting the borders, erasing evidence of the supernatural, and bringing back those who leave the Beneath, but they also have sub-branches and programs dedicated to just general preservation efforts, one of which the Dating Program sprang from.

Preservers of the Old Ways (POW)

A mysterious terrorist organization. The group was virtually unheard of by the public until very recently, after it's disruption of the Single's Gala thrown by the MPA. It's purpose, as it's name implies, is to 'preserve' and bring the way supernatural creatures used to live, presumably from before the exodus to the underground. While many of their apparent goals are controversial, the group has a surprisingly extensive and capable following.

Heaven & Hell

Heaven is the peaceful realm God and his angels call home. It's the final resting place of all good and faithful souls, a long way away from the conflicts of mortal life. Though, it has come decidedly closer in the wake of it's oncoming war with Hell. Ultimately, however, God has decided it is not the time for the world to end, and is looking to bring an end to the fighting, for the sake of his mortal flock.

Hell is Heaven's opposite - a massive place with a long, bloody history, filled with demons. Many of it's residents are Wraith Demons, but there's a surprising amount variety to be found. Lucifer, and his second in command, Aeshma, are currently marching their armies on the world, hoping to bring about judgment day early.

Supplemental Information

Disguises - Supernaturals that go out into the world above are required to conceal any traits that would suggest their true nature. Those that cannot naturally disguise themselves with their abilities do so through various methods. Fairy glamour was the only choice for most for awhile, and it used to be more expensive until potions of glamour were able to be synthesized. Glamour potions are relatively cheap for their valuable effect, but the cost of them add up overtime, especially to those who have to leave the Beneath often. Recently, though, there has been a sort of 'cloaking device' released to the public. It is marginally more expensive, and most residents are unable to afford it, but using it can those who utilize it an exorbitant amount of money over time, including the government. Therefore, government employees or members of government programs dealing with the surface receive these devices at a heavily discounted rate, and they are occasionally loaned out.

Outsiders - Supernaturals living on the surface are regularly brought back for trial or removed in the field by the government, though, the amount of supernaturals that are estimated to be on the surface are likely much greater than what the government of the Beneath would claim. The world is a big place, after all.

Leaving - Normally, you'd have a hard time trying to get out of Deepvale, even legally. If you have to leave, you'll be watched. If you want to leave, there's a mountain of paperwork. And if the MPA doesn't trust you? Good luck. Getting out illegally is even harder, with teams ready and willing to track you down. Humans don't even know about the Beneath to try and get into it. Or, they didn't, until recently.

Race Overview

Some supernatural races are new, some are old. Some are known to humans, some used to be known to humans, and some have never been encountered by humans at all. No matter the case, the lore of races of supernatural in this roleplay are generally dictated by the first player to use a character of that race, whether as a main, side, or non-player character. If a player is currently using a species below as a main or side character, it is asked that you refer to them for help in making a character of that race in order to keep things consistent in the roleplay. If the race you are interested in has been used as a non-player character, this is not required - simply making sure the race is compliant with the current lore in this thread will suffice.

PC by a name stands for a player character's race, followed by who's in charge of it, and NPC stands for non-player character race. If a race is not listed, it's lore is free to interpret as you like. If no description is available for a race, refer to it's creator or the roleplaying thread for guidance.

Succubi and Incubi (PC/ Rustic Rustic )

Succubi and incubi are both sub-categories of a race wholly referred to as 'Lilin'. While the presupposed religious origins of Lilin have been contested, the stigma of being labeled a demonic race has persisted for decades and exists even into the modern day. Lilin have been a controversial topic in the Beneath for that reason and many more, and though public attitudes toward them have slowly warmed over time, they are still considered a contentious topic even now. Some view them as evil parasites who only take victims, and some view them as hedonists providing a mutual service to their partners.

Otherwise, they are known for being secretive and deceitful toward outsiders, finding companionship almost exclusively among themselves. Succubi of older cities like Deepvale consider themselves 'sisters', and incubi of such consider themselves 'brothers', and usually live together and care for each other accordingly. They are an often proud race and are usually happy to show off their race's telltale traits, regardless of the risks it can incur to them. Their abilities are more powerful the more energy they have received from their partners, and their abilities become more limited the longer they wait between receptions. Lilin can die from a lack of energy, among other things, but such a death has not been recorded in decades, due the rocketing rates of promiscuous young men and women available versus the population of lilin. Lilin, incubi or succubi, can take energy from men or women, regardless of designation.

Dragons (PC/ DergTheDergon DergTheDergon )

In this world, Dragons always, always carry a human-esque form as well, or at least, have for millennia. Dragons were one of the first races to evolve, and dominated prehistory much like dinosaurs; the main difference is, there was no meteor strike and Dragons survived to evolve into, arguably, and based on the subspecies, the most advanced race on the planet.

Their shape-shifting ability is evidence of this; they also have some of the toughest skin and strongest muscles compared to the majority of other races, can breath fire, and can of course fly. However, you do not see Dragons ruling Earth these days. This is due to an aspect of their evolution (which some dragons argue was actually devolution) that, over time, stunted their capacity for offspring.

The average female only conceives a single child over her entire lifetime, not for lack of trying for more, but because most females enter a premature menopause after delivering their first egg,for reasons unknown to even modern science. There are a multitude if reasons for this. Chief among them, though, is that modern science is a human endeavor. If top xenobiology researchers got their hands on a live dragon, due to how advanced science has become of late, it would likely aid them in wiping out all monsters for good should they wish to. Because of this, it is an unspoken rule that Dragons should never, ever reveal their true forms to a human.

Due to this, Fairies and dragons have a longstanding history of dealing with each other; fairy glamours for leaving the Beneath for any reason, in exchange for protection from larger creatures that would spell doom for fairs, but nine times out of ten, not Dragons. Dragons are not the most powerful beings out there; in fact, there are many a species that rivals them in that regard. However, they remain one of the oldest species to still be living, although they are among the most endangered in modern times.

Hounds of Hell (PC/ PanOtterPus PanOtterPus )

While hellhounds are usually trusted with guarding lesser entrances to the world of the dead (e.g. graveyards and burial grounds) and carrying out tasks relating to the afterlife (e.g. hunting lost souls or guarding supernatural treasure) hounds of hell are more than mere hellhounds, chosen specifically to guard the most important treasures and people.

The two most commonly known being the three headed beast Cerberus - "The Hound of Hades", who guards the gates of the Underworld, preventing the dead from leaving - and his two headed brother, Orthrus - who spent a time guarding the herd of red cattle belonging to the giant, Geryon. After his master was killed, Orthrus was approached by the MPA and asked to guard the city gates, keeping in those who didn't have the paperwork to leave, and keeping out those that didn't belong.

These beasts come with the usual benefits of hellhounds - increased speed, strength and an affinity for fire.

Dark Elves (PC/ PanOtterPus PanOtterPus )

Dark elves are known for their aggression, deceit, and stealth. They are very brutal and cruel by nature, having little mercy when it comes to cheating, battling, or anything dealing with the life of another being. They have little respect for even their own kind, at times waging war against each other. However, clans are known to band together, to combat invasions and attacks by other races. They usually do not mix blood with other races; if they do, it is often with a demon or related creature. They lurk in dark places and love the shadows. Rarely will they come into the light for needless purposes, but it is not usually believed light will harm or weaken them. Their weakness varies upon legend, and may include excessive heat, rain, nettles, or the blossoms of some plants and trees. Dark elves generally travel in pairs or groups, as their tendencies towards cheating and theft make them targets for retaliation and violence at the hands of other races.

Vorux (PC/ Verdas Verdas )

Vorux are humanoid carnivorous plants, preying predominantly on animals, though they have no qualms about human flesh. They live a solitary life, only coming together to torture those with pollen allergies. Having the longevity of trees, they can live for very long periods of time, capable of living up to the thousands, but most die of boredom before then. Cold and/or dry environments are their bane, as are vegans.

Sentient Weaponry (PC/ Verdas Verdas )

A variant of sentient objects, sentient weapons are powerful, often magical objects capable of great death and destruction in the right hands. They are one of the few supernatural creatures with a liking for humans, though 'like' is an understatement as they adore, and more often than not, love, the warmongering race. They are vampiric, feasting on the blood of their victims, but will not hesitate to consume their user's blood if they are unable to provide them with fresh kills. Certain sentient weapons naturally possess a humanoid form, though most still require a glamour due to unwanted (and often useless) traits and features, such as bird wings, glowing eyes, horns, etc. depending on the nature of their true form.

Beastkind (PC/ Rustic Rustic )

Just as there are many supernatural species falling under the label of 'humanoid', there are equally as many considered 'bestial'. The line between the two is blurred and often overlapping, but beastkind are considered to be the intersection between the two. Beastkind come in many shapes, sizes, and sub-species, and are, on the whole, very common in the Beneath; however, the commonality of individual species types varies greatly. They can be identified by their animalistic appearances and anatomy and humanoid posture and ability for reasoning. Pure-blooded individuals are also usually magically inclined, and can naturally shift between more feral or human forms. Lifespans vary between sub-species, but are mostly close to humans'.

Wolfkind

One of the many sub-species of beastkind. Wolfkind, as their name suggests, appear like wolves, and have many of the same mannerisms. They have been known to be one of the most territorial sub-species of beastkind, though, the space they have demanded for themselves has decreased significantly throughout the history of the underground. They are carnivorous, and live and travel mostly in tight-knit packs. There is often a heavy divide in their communities concerning the conditions of living underground, but on a whole, they are not especially known for feelings of discontent.

Angels (PC/ Rustic Rustic , DergTheDergon DergTheDergon )

God's faithful servants. Winged, immortal beings who wield light-based magic. They are incredibly powerful, and cannot be killed by anything other than necromantic or demonic force. They still suffer wounds, but anything more mundane will eventually fully heal. In return, they must adhere to a strict code of conduct preventing their attachments to more worldly desires.

Fallen Angels

Angels punished for transgressions against God become fallen. They aren't nearly as powerful as full-fledged angels, but they can sometimes still be a force to be reckoned with. They are subject to losing their powers or memories, depending on the nature of their crimes. They are mostly the same as their heavenly counterparts, with some exceptions. They are less durable - suffering wounds more easily - and their white wings tend to blacken with time. Though can be redeemed, most do not look fondly on heaven or hell, instead turning toward hedonism for comfort.

Wraith Demons (NPC)

'Traditional' demons, making up most of hell's army. Immortal beings with deep red skin, eyes of a deeper, brighter crimson with soulless black pupils, horns of a pitch black color, massive, muscular bodies, and faces that always seem to carry either a look of utter hatred, or a sadistic grin. Hard to kill. Light/holy magic is most effective.

Fae (NPC)

Powerful, sometimes unseelie creatures, who are thought by humans to be unable to stray from fairy circles. Their charming magic is capable of luring many creatures into their deadly thrall.

Fauns (PC/ DergTheDergon DergTheDergon )

Vampires (PC/ PanOtterPus PanOtterPus , Aukanai Aukanai )

Kitsune (PC/ Halexia Halexia )

Velanari (PC/ Daniel Reaving Daniel Reaving )

Bloodseers (PC/ DergTheDergon DergTheDergon )

Bloodseers are humans that, through power granted to their ancestors by powerful, yet now-long-forgotten supernatural sorcerers, have innate magical talent of one type or another. For the most part, both supernaturals and humans believe that they are simply a myth, and have for millennia. However, said legends are rather commonly told to supernaturals by their parents. Many of the best Hunters in the Hunter’s Organization have this ability, but there is no way to tell until one is in proximity of a supernatural for the first time; the ability lies dormant until then, hidden deep in the human’s DNA. Most of the few Hunters with this ability have it before joining, and it factors into their decision to fight the monsters they sense. There may be more to them than that, but it has been lost to antiquity.

Hybrids (PC/ Halexia Halexia )

Is generally a through and through pacifist and believes ALL life is sacred.
But also doesn't view death as a 'big deal'
she is not against killing those who threaten others or nature.

She works a LOT with plants, rocks, nature, etc, and SO MUCH DEAD STUFF (her collection of pickled/embalmed/stuffed/just casually rotting creatures is too vast to be normal) but does it all through a lot of spooky looking to locals death magic/worship shit and is very much an embodiment of her spiritual beliefs which again, isn't great for making friends with normies

Gender: Male

Age: 21

Sexuality: Straight

Abilities: Blood mage, He is able to manipulate his blood in any manner, using it mostly as a defense when/if attacked. He can make any weapon he requires however using too much of his blood entails major blood loss so he has to use is sparingly, so once it's used, that's it, he is out of the fight

Appearance: Black hair with dark red eyes and sharp teeth long enough to pierce the skin to get to the blood he requires. His teeth and eyes being the only thing that gives him away. Tall and well built but not to the point he looks like he has been lifting too many weights over the years. Pale completion as he doesn't see much sunlight (not that he sees it at all)

Why they have joined the dating program: Isn't a part of the program though does find it curious at times and wonders what all the fuss is about, otherwise he tends to stick to his own devices, only feeding on others when he absolutely has too.

Unlike many familiars she is able to speak the human tongue in fact she is able to speak many languages a gift that was bestowed upon her when she was first born and unlike many familiars will outlive many of her masters. She cares not for politics but is willing to release her teeth and claws in an instant if required. Nothing I do will be enough for redemption. But that doesn't mean I shouldn't try.
Amren
Previously A Mercenary and Personal Assassin for a High Ranking Demon Criminal
He is a Wendigo/Human half-breed
Wendigos: Typically a creature outlawed from common society. They possess two forms: One of a beautiful human, and one of a monstrous, engorged crow. They are notorious for their insatiable appetites for flesh, particularly fond of feeding upon humanoids. They are also well known for how readily they will devour one another, and the mother's tendency to consume her young. Considered vulgar even among Deepvale Society
Agender. He/Him pronouns.
Pansexual
His magical talents I will go into further in the RP, but a quick summary of his specialty areas are (In order of most skilled to least): Blood Magic, Frost Magic, Deity Work.
Race skills: Enhanced speed. Night Vision (greyscale) Ability to transform into a crow at will.
Race disadvantages: Unwelcome from most civilizations if discovered. Suffers a constant hunger which if left unchecked can induce a 'Rage state' where his consciousness gives way to instinct. Cannot see color. Allergic to silver and holy water.
Cold, reserved, serious.
Used to be an extremely bad person. Is now 'atoning' for his past.
Joined the Dating Program in order to try and aid the revival of races he once helped drive to the brink of extinction. WHY he suddenly changed from 'bad' to 'good', no one has a clue, and very few trust it or him.
