The most impressive parts of his body are his forearms, where he's got some muscle from lifting boxes on the weekends for a moving company back home. He's got legs for days, only furthering the beanstalk look. His legs are the least "manly" part of his body, according to him. Frankly, no one ever notices or cared. The rest of his body follows suit in terms of thinness, though his shoulders are somewhat wide. He wants, desperately, to show his mother that life doesn’t hate their family; this was all just a bunch of bad luck, and he’ll be the one to change it.
    In addition to this, his mom hasn’t really ever had faith in him. She’s never said it out loud, but when Ethan would tell her about his Ohio friends scoffing at his ambitions, she never disagreed with them. E.T. spends a lot of time regretting things, like not going to college or at least knowing a trade. Except, he beats himself up for regretting anything; he’s smart enough to know life is too laborious to do that.
    He gets lonesome, but he also is too afraid to reach out to others. He’s constantly afraid of offending people, even those who love him despite his faults.     Coming from Butt-Fuck-Nowhere, Ohio, E.T. and his mom have been a dynamic duo since his father died when he was five. Growing up in a small town, he was often bullied for being so… Ethan. While the rest of the world was experiencing the hippie revolution, he was looked down upon for even trying to participate. He wore jeans every day and holey button-downs because he couldn’t afford anything else. Still, he believed in the movement and respected it, even if people hated on him for trying. That isn’t to say that Ethan didn’t try to find friends. He did, but they didn’t really care about what he did. Often times, he kept his mouth shut about his wild aspirations. He learned to only trust his mom, but she was never around, working full time as a nurse, nor did he want her to be his friend. He wanted his own set of people who liked him for him.
    
    Ethan could never put his finger on why he stuck out like a sore thumb in his town. Really, he's quite average. Perhaps a little unnervingly quiet, always intuned to everyone around him, and cagey. He knew he didn't like to go out and hunt for Gardner snakes and frogs with his friends in the woods, but why should it matter that he preferred to sit on a tree stump and look at the leaves move? He didn't understand why the things that obviously made him different were bad things.     Dying before E.T. turned five, John Lester never got to know his son, and he didn't exactly bother to. Working most days as a mechanic, it was hard for his father to make time for his son. The circumstances of his death aren't exactly clear, but that is mostly because Ethan's mother refuses to discuss it. Adele prefers not to relive such a traumatic moment, and it's better that E.T. doesn't remember. Rumor has it, though, that John was murdered by his brother over some monetary dispute. However, Adele keeps all information about the manslaughter charges locked up tight, especially because E.T. was inside the garage with the two men when the fight happened. When Adele found her husband, Ethan was covered in blood. It took everything in his mom to not break down in tears, but instead, she picked up baby Ethan and cleaned him up as she dialed 911. For years, people in town would accuse her of being callous and cruel. They'd even tell her that she was in on the accidental murder. That actually, they should have arrested her and John's brother and charged them with first degree murder.     In highschool, Ethan found some reprieve from his status as an outlandish figure in town. When Lola became the little Ohio town's first exchange student, E.T. didn't expect to fall for her. Especially not this hard, considering he still thinks about her in New York. Her French accent always made Ethan feel tingly all over, and he wrote countless poems about the sound. Now, he refuses to speak French even though he became fairly fluent due to dating her. Needless to say, it didn't end well. Well, Lola would say that they ended well. Ethan is still heartbroken.
    
    He says that Lola changed his life, changed his entire world view. It was important for him to finally have someone in high school. Someone he could talk to about everything and anything. Lola was this person for him, and in fact, she became his only person. She was the one he would actually have the confidence to show his poetry to, and she actually gave him genuine criticism. Lola was always encouraging him to be better, and Ethan thanked his lucky stars that for some reason the prettiest girl at school wanted to support him. To this day, he hasn't figured out why she loved him, why she still calls him every few months to check-in. In fact, Lola was the one who encouraged him to go to New York. He went on for hours about Alan Ginsberg, his favorite poet, and personal hero, and finally, Lola told him he should just go to New York. Lola was always coming up with solutions and suggestions, and it was one of the things he loved most. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to keep Lola as she returned to France, single.
    
    They say that someone's first love shapes their entire view of love. Hopefully, this isn't the case because there are multiple elements to Ethan's relationship with Lola that made it unhealthy. If you couldn't tell, the relationship was extremely one-sided and it got to the point where Lola felt she couldn't do anything without Ethan. He relied on her for everything, and it left no room for her to be the one who needed help and support. Eventually, Ethan stopped asking her how she was doing, and instead, he would just jump into what happened to him that day. After that started happening, Lola became unhappy.     Lola is an incredibly sweet French exchange student. She was highly loved by most people, and to this day, people don't know why she chose Ethan as her boyfriend. Their relationship started out being based on their mutual love of the arts. Lola loved his poetry, and he loved her art. They would have days where they would simply hang out in their PJs and watch movies together and paint. She fell in love with his way with words and his emotional spirit. He fell in love with her gentleness and her ability to express things through painting.     Working at Pammy's has a lot of perks, including being able to write on the job and having Lena, the best cook ever, cook him free meals. Lena has managed to make Ethan feel more at home in such a new and exciting city, especially since she takes the time to teach him and force him out of his shell a little. It is because of her that he goes to New Age Bookstore and listens to readings, hoping to have the confidence to do read some of his own work one day {This could also be where [The Psuedo-Philosopher] and Ethan meet}. Lena's bought him his winter coat, even when he said he didn't need one. Lena means the world to him, and without her, he'd probably still be the sheltered Ohio boy he was. He'd also probably be back at home.

Now, he lives above the diner, which, yes, is smelly, but it’s better than the streets. She's also the person who gave him the nickname "E.T". Without her, he'd still be homeless or perhaps he'd be back at home in Ohio.   Henry lives in the East Village like the rest of the group, but he has far more money than they do. His apartment is halfway decent, and lavish compared to the others in the village. He works as an assistant (read: glorified secretary) at B&R publishing not because he needs to, but because he's trying to make more connections in the publishing world while gaining some life experience. His whole has been very sheltered, from growing up on the Upper East Side to graduating from Columbia. He came to the village to get away from it all.

  Backstory
  
  Born to a wealthy family, Henry and his two younger sisters lived a pretty charmed life. He grew up spending summers upstate at the lake house or at country clubs. He went to fancy private schools that taught enough strict Catholicism for him to have a whole lot of sexuality-related trauma. All boys schools and pretty boys and homophobic preaching was not a good mix. There were comforts, of course. He developed an early interest in history, which led him to start reading Romantic literature, and then poetry. That of course led to him reading more modern poetry and falling completely in love with it. He started writing his own poetry in middle school, albeit very secretly.
  
  Around the same time, his father began to focus on training him to take over the company. Though he played along, Henry didn't want any part of it. He would much rather capture a breezy fall night in words or practice his Latin. When he was about halfway through high school, he finally got the courage to tell his father this. It didn't go over well. But luckily for him, his sister, the middle one, had always been jealous of him, and was quick to jump at the idea that she could take over the company instead of Henry. She was determined or annoying enough that eventually Henry's father agreed, and Henry was off the hook. He got to go to Columbia and get an English degree.
  
  That was when he found LSD. Sure, he knew all the greats did it, but he had never tried it before college. It changed everything. He could write so much better, it took away all his inhibitions, and he wanted more. He needed more. It got bad. He almost didn't graduate, almost ended up dead. But he doesn't really remember all of that, and so he considers himself moved on.

  After graduating, he knew what he wanted to do. He went right to the East Village and got an apartment. If there was anywhere to be creative, it was there. He got a little bored just sitting around and everything, so he applied for an assistant position at a local publishing company, B&R. He didn't expect the owners to be a gay couple, but he wasn't necessarily opposed to it. Maybe it helped him feel a little more okay with himself. Maybe he had always been straight and he was just being dramatic. But hey, it is what it is. He also frequents New Age Bookstore for poetry readings and also the cats.
