This is the Area where I'm going to drop off all the Lore.
Either because I personally deemed it necessary or because some asked me about it.
Seriously. If you need something for your character or think something might be cool to have then just ask.

The USS Bin

The Bin was originally built as a cargo freighter and was with its 400 meters of length, 100 meters of width and 150 meters of height on the upper end of the C class ships. It is unclear how it ended up as an empty yet perfectly intact hull stranded on a small asteroid. The Moryas, at that time operating from an A class hauler decided to take the ship as their own and invested two years and everything they owned to completely refit it.

The entire lower half of the ship is one enormous cargo bay with enough capacity to store an entire D class ship in its disassembled state. A separate 10x8 docking port directly leads into the ships belly and allows easy cargo transfer. The interior is outfitted with cranes, rails and shelves for easy storage and movement of cargo.

The most prominent feature of the ship is its Maw. A section of the hull, sitting squarely at the center of the top and 80x100 meters large, can open up and allows the crew to pull large objects into the ship. The room underneath functions as a giant airlock and holds most of the larger or stationary equipment the scrappers use. An air look leads into the pressurized areas of the ship and a lift goes down into the cargo bay.

The Ships fore houses the living quarters, mess, infirmary, recreation room and the bridge.

Each crew member gets one 3x2 quarter coming with a bed, a closet, a table + chair and a shelf. They can be individually decorated. Who has what room can be seen on the crew roster.

The Ship's aft contains the hangar, storage for equipment, janitorial closet, engines, workshops, the main computer, the main generator and one empty room that has been sealed

The ship also has three rotating turrets for self defense. One at the front and to the two in the back, one on top and one below.

Shield technology

All ships use active energy shields. These shields use sensors to determine incoming danger and create an opposing force to neutralize it. This would make any ship, at least in theory, invincible as a shield in itself has no limit to the amount of energy it can create.

The generator feeding it though has.  That is why shields have a built-in limiter to keep them from over burdening the Generator or frying the ships circruity.

A shielding system is thus labeled by the maximum amount of energy it is allowed to draw.

The power of Valerium

The exact nature of the mineral called Valerium is still unknown but its discovery was humanity's stepping stone to the stars and is source of many technical marvels. It was praised as the fabled philosophers stone for its ability to convert energy completely losslessly.

The exact conversion depends on the shape the metal is forged into and it's Strains .

The reason why Valerium forms different Strains is unknown though the most common theory is that it has to do with the Star it had formed in.  There are four known Strains sorted by their rarity.

  • Alpha Valerium creates artifical gravitational forces and are widely used in shipbuilding, finding use in the artificial gravity control system as well as the ftl drive. It is the only Strain natively found in the solar system and there was barely enough to move a single ship through hyperspace.
  • Beta Valerium can generate any kind of radiation depending on the form. It is mostly used for weapons.
  • Gamma Valerium emmits radio signals and receives them.  Unlike other media does Valerium allow the signal to travel at astounding speeds and with seemingly unlimited range, allowing almost instant communication across the galaxy.
  • Delta Valerium does nothing. Or at least nothing has been discovered yet. It has been completely inert during all experiments so far.

Did you mean 15 or 150 meters tall? 15 may be a bit small and it may look aweful strange being 400 meters long. Unless it's because the pilot doesn't have a license and you don't need a liscense to fly a sandwich.

Looks like I missed a 0. Thanks for noticing.

The human federation

We never managed to figure out what was the cause of earth's destruction. The remains of the planet are unapproachable and no other species in the galaxy has ever encountered anything similar. We were lucky to have discovered early signs of the destruction though as the fear of total annihilation was what drove us to conquer the stars.
We had yet to discover any planets that were naturally habitable and ftl travel was only possible with very small ships.  That's why we set our sights on our closest neighbors, the centauri stars. Or Ioata centauri to be precise. The star is similar to the sun and had an asteroid belt in the right orbit. The technology we used to assemble the debris into a planet was later ruled to be illegal as it could also be used to destroy an existing planet. But alas, that was how we gained our new home: New Terra.

New Terra has breathable atmosphere and moderate climate throughout but little to no plant life and most of the surface is covered in buildings. Countless greenhouses and domed parks garnish the roofs of the houses and space elevators run 24/7 to sate the mega city's hunger for resources.

It didn't take people long to venture further out into space, looking for more planets to colonize and resources to mine. A total of 20 planets were discovered that were habitable by humans and subsequently colorized, forming the human federation. Each planet has its own local government but all act as one political and military entity when interacting with other species. Countless other celestial bodies within the borders of the federation are of value and are either orbited by a space station or feature a ground base, usually to mine for valuable resources or because the life on the planet, while incompatible with humans, is of interest to us.

The federation is openly trading with many of the other advanced species but the general public rarely comes into contact with “aliens” as visitation policy is left to the local government and over half of the planets have ruled that visitors are not allowed to actually land on the surface.

There have been several wars over the two centuries since our exodus. Pretty much every first contact with a new neighbor ended violently but the last decade was peaceful, mostly due to the treaty of the eight Stars that, among other things, enforces a ceasefire until contact between the leaders of two species have established contact.

The Ark Horizon
The bustling mega structure that is the Ark horizon has had a long history of war, trade and diplomacy.

The lifeless dwarf Planet Asoras 1 was discovered during the federation's expansion phase and lies well outside the borders established today. It was incredibly rich in resources and the explorers were certain that the people would go to war over its treasures.
They used all the resources they brought to build an improvised automated defense platform.
The colonization fleet never reached the planet though as the front expanding into that direction made first contact with an alien species and promptly died.
The cannon in Orbit of Asoras proved to be of incredible strategic value during the following war and was expanded into a full blown military base, already half a kilometer in size at that point.

The war was eventually settled and the federation was given mining rights over the planet. The humans, being the pragmatists they are, remodeled the station to serve as a base as heavy machinery ravaged the planet below and needed endless expansions as more and more people rushed in to grab some of the riches Asoras 1 had to offer.
The damage to the planet from the mining got so severe that it was eventually decided that they would just dismantle the entire thing and be done with it. And the Ark Horizon, over two kilometers in size at the time and still with the original cannon at it's core, became the solitary satellite of the Asoras star system.

You'd think that the station would have lost many of its citizens after it had fulfilled its purpose but its position right at the border combined with the federation's foreign policy had it instead transformed into a bustling trade hub.

It continued to do pretty well in that state for the next decade until the treaty of the eight Stars came along. The treaty included humanity as well as the seven other major species discovered at the time and needed to be negotiated on neutral ground.
Along came a secluded, well defended and mostly independent trade station. Each member of the treaty pretty much bolted they're embassy onto one corner of the station, creating an even greater architectural mess Ghana the Ark already was in the process, which later great into it's own city sized sectors as members of each species flocked to the embassy. Each creating one of the long arms that spread out from the central core.

The Ark Horizon is at the time of this writing well over 20 kilometers in size, houses millions of citizens from all over the galaxy and holds a defensive fleet of well over a thousand C and above class ships. It is the by far largest artificial structure and a fortress that could rival entire nations in fire power.

Ship classification
Spaceships and other vessels are categorized by they size using letters.

  • Class O ships are two meters or less in size. Class O are most satellites, drones, strike suits and escape pods.
  • Class A ships are up to ten meters in size. Class A are most fighters and hauling ships.
  • Class B ships are up to 100 meters in size. Class B are gunships , small freighters, dropships and shuttles.
  • Class C ships are up to 500 meters in size. Class C are freighters, cruise ships and colony ships.
  • Class D ships are up to one kilometer in size. Class D are Destroyers and Carriers.
  • Anything Beyond one kilometer is Class E. These ships are so rare they defy labels though most of them are called dreadnaughts for very good reasons.

Movement in Space
Navigating the vacuum of space is done via a myriad of propulsion technologies. We'll go over the types and their capabilities here but I'll spare you the scientific details.

Reactionary exhaust jets
The smallest of propulsions use two very compact liquids that when mixed turn into high pressure gas. Tiny tubes connect the various jets covering the vessel to a central tank. The jets allow for full eight axis freedom of movement although they aren't very strong. Usually used for rotation and minimal movements during docking.
Almost all spacesuits come with an integrated system that barely hinders movement and creates enough force to travel 1 mile in a straight line.

Traditional engines.
The usual nozzles at the back of any vessel generate thrust by expelling matter of some sort. They create a large amount of speed over a short period of time but quickly burn through the heavy fuel and thus are unsuitable for long distances.

Gravity drive
The Valerium core generates G-forces from electricity that are used to move the ship. It takes a long time to reach any respectable speeds but allows long distance travels. Distances within a solar system can be traversed in mere hours but even reaching the next closes star takes two days on average.

Jumping
Jump drives consume an insane amount of energy and are thus rarely seen installed in ships. Jump stations instead offer a boost catapulting the customer halfway across the galaxy in less than a week. You are guaranteed to find a jump station in less than two weeks of your current position no matter where you are within the civilized universe.
