Yeuroe is a small province off the western coast, covered by snow more months out of the year than not. It is separated from the other provinces by tremendous, white-tipped mountain ranges with treacherous paths, almost impossible to navigate without a native Yeuroean guide. Once past the mountains, inside Yeuroean borders, many consider it a truly elegant landscape. The tranquil, fresh blankets of snow disguise the difficult conditions of living in such a severe climate. Through the generations, Yeuroe has adapted to its desolate location, developing its own, very distinct culture. Based deeply in tradition and spirituality, it is a culture that each Yeuroean holds true to their heart.
According to that tradition, when a child is to be born, an oracle must be sought for blessing and clairvoyance. To Yeuroeans, eyes are truly windows to the soul. In order to see a baby's future, an oracle interprets what can be seen through the child's eyes. Most often, good fortunes of well-being and congratulations are exchanged. When Zhenji had entered the world, the oracle spoke of fox and flame, two very ominous omens. As her shapeshifting powers were yet unknown, the oracles surmised that the fox represented a cunning mind and agile body. It could not be foretold, however, whether the fire in her eyes meant Zhenji would blaze a path for her and her people, or be destined to burn to ashes. Perhaps both.
As she grew in years, Zhenji's vulpine affinity became apparent. It began as gifts in hearing and smell, growing into the ability to change herself into a fox's form. They had mistakenly assumed that was the extent of her power. Paired with her rebellious and fiery nature, the ability to become a fox made it difficult for her nursemaids to keep track of her. Their solution was to contain her in beautifully decorated rooms and luscious gardens but still behind locked doors for safe keeping. Prisoner of a gilded cage, Zhenji spent much of her time outside, burrowing in the snow as the arctic foxes of Yeuroe did. One day, she noticed a small finch land and sing sweetly on a branch nearby. As she moved towards it, entranced by its song, the bird flew away and joined another finch in flight. Lonely in her gilded cage and envious of the bird's freedom, Zhenji found herself soaring before she understood what happened. Outstretching her wings, she glided above the castle walls, keenly observing the panicking maids and guards searching for her.
It was then decided that Zhenji would live in the court of the (then) King-to-be. It would, hopefully, help balance her temperament to be with those who could keep up with her. Zhenji had come of age by Yeuroean standards, and it would be good, her father said, to be around people her own age.What he really meant was that alliances were vital to Yeuroe's survival. It was impossible to sustain their small province without trade, so forming relationships with the king (or queen) and other crown royals would be beneficial.
