Thaddeus Trial

You stand in the utter darkness, your eyes gaining no hint as to what may be around you. The dark is so black it feels oppressive, the air is cool and somewhat musty. Like old stones and dust.

Thaddeus reaches into his bag and takes out his everburning torch. He holds it high and lets his eyes adjust to the new light.

The light from your torch quickly fills the room. Once your eyes adjust you see that you are standing the center of a room that is about five strides (25 feet) in front and behind you (west and east) as well as the same distance to the right and left (north and south). As you quickly look around the room you easily spot a door behind (east) you and a tapestry hanging on the wall before you (west).

Thaddeus lowers the torch so his hand is level with his waist and considers his options. "Well, I suppose I should look at the tapestry before I move on." He walks forward towards the tapestry, sweeping the torch from side to side and looking for anything out of place.

You approach the wall hanging, the flickering light from your magical torch shows you that it is well made and out of place for the stark room.

The room itself has a domed roof made of carved stone that matches the uniform grey blocks that make up the walls and floor.

At the bottom edge of the tapestry where it barely touches the floor you see the corner of parchment.

"Elves? What are they doing on this wall? I've never known any elves in a place like this, but this is certainly their level of craftsmanship." He bends forward to examine the parchment at the corner.

You reach down and pull the parchment out from under the edge to get a better look at it, and find that it is in fact a note. For you it would seem. In a flowing script written with a light hand you read:

This is your acceptance trial. To succeed you must retrieve a pair of trophies and bring them to the me. Anything else you find you may do with as you see fit.

The Manager

"Fair enough. That shouldn't be an issue." Thaddeus rolls up the scroll and puts it in his bag. He proceeds across the room, once again sweeping the torch and looking for anything out of place.

You look around the room and notice nothing else of note, the only exit you find is the wooden door. It is a simple construction, like you have seen around the barracks and your family's holdings for the servants. There is a iron latch and handle and the lack of hinges tells you it open away from the room.

Thaddeus gently raps on the door with a knuckle. He holds the torch close to the latch and handle and leans in for a closer look.

The dull thudding sound you would expect from a wood slatted iron bound door resounds for a moment. As you look you notice the door looks to be slightly swollen into the door frame, which leads you to believe it may be stuck in place. But you see nothing that looks untoward or dangerous.

Gripping the latch and shoving your shoulder in the door with your full body weight behind it, the door gives a slight cracking noise as it is jarred free from the frame and swings outward. The torch light fills the passage that extends straight (east) beyond the edge of your light some five or six strides. You also see a side passage only one stride (five feet) on your right (south).

Thaddeus pauses for a moment, looking between the two choices and weighing his options. After some thought, he cautiously walks to the right and peers into the passage.

As you look down the passage (south) you magical torch light shows that it turns to the right (west) after about four strides (20 feet).

Sigh. After looking over his shoulder for a moment, and seeming to contemplate going back the other direction, Thaddeus ventures down to the turn and, again, cautiously looks around the corner.

You look down the passage (west) and see a new opening about four strides (20 feet) on the left (south) the rest of the passage extends into the darkness beyond the edge of your light.

Thaddeus continues down the passage. He pauses at the new opening to look around the corner and make sure there are no nasty surprises waiting there.

As you approach the new opening your light reveals an iron door further along the passage, about four strides (20 feet) past the opening. As you look down the opening (south) it reaches about four strides more before turning to the left (east).

Thaddeus proceeds down the passage to the iron door and stops to examine it.

You look over the door, it appears to be a solid iron door, like you have heard of being in the vaults of higher stationed families. You an tell the door will swing outwards in the passage by the pull ring on it.

Thaddeus positions himself so the door will shield him as it opens, and pulls on the ring. He stays as flush to the door as possible.
