What is the Force?
This is the Force:

It is everything. From the stars dotting the deep vastness of space to the endless sea of black between. It is the day and the night; the light and the shadow it casts upon itself. It is you and me and the ground we share and the air that separates us.

It is more than just a religion: it is a way of life, of thinking—of perception as a whole. When confronted with darkness, it can act as comfort. When you are scared, it drapes a blanket over your shivering body. When all hope seems lost, the Force reveals a new path.

It is a source of intuition, preciseness, and awareness. An enhancement of emotion, compassion, anger, jealousy, happiness. It gives aid to those lucky enough to call upon it; but nothing more. It does not bestow power. The manifestation of "power" sprouts from a deeper and more refined understanding of how to use, or manipulate, the gift given by the Force. An enhanced leap into the air or even a simple telekinetic movement could require meticulous concentration. Mastery of even the most basic of skills could take years depending on one's own understanding and reserves.

It is a breath of fresh air that breathes life into your senses, allowing you to notice what would otherwise be insignificant. It is a break from your physical form. A glance into something bigger. A glimpse through the eyes of the Universe. Allow it to fall over you; call upon it and wrap yourself with its grace, and nothing is impossible. Ensure you use it well, for there is a shadow within each of us. Do not let your shadow dictate your actions, else you will be consumed.

It is neither good not bad. Black nor white. The Force is simply natural. It prefers it that way, synchronized into a perfect balance.

It is a balance whose natural order can be upset by those to whom it renders aid. Those who do not embrace their inner darkness, and instead give into it, often call upon a corrupt, perverted version of the Force born from this shadow. It is the Dark Side that disrupts the Force's balance and institutes a path of evil.

How the Force is used
While there are already three posts of information on the Force to read over, this one focuses on an ever important topic in relation—one I really want to emphasize and hammer down: the Force's application and limits.

Now, the Force has had many different feats shown across both Expanded Universe and Disney Canon medias. Each has been vastly different and inconsistent no matter the universe (in my experience), and if you've not been able to tell yet, Rebirth is built around consistency and cohesion—both from a narrative standpoint and an in-universe standpoint. In other words, we're going to have an underlined, enforced way to use the Force.

Don't worry, though! It isn't going to be limiting for your characters or in your writing; it will only be there to keep us on track and avoid confusion.

So, how does one come to use the Force, you may ask?

The Force is like a second energy. Think of Chakra from Naruto or Magicka from Skyrim. They both reside within a being and provide energy to accomplish tasks. One must first call upon the Force until they have gathered the Force within themselves and have broken away from their "physical" state. For some, this can take as long as the snap of a finger; for others, perhaps a lesser-trained or less talented user, it would take longer.

Take these excerpts from Matthew Stover's Revenge of the Sith novelization for example:

In these screenshots, we see Dooku call unto himself the power of the Force. Being a Darksider, this is obviously different than a Jedi or those who avoid the Dark Side, but the same basic idea still applies. After he had wrapped himself with the Force, his senses heightened and he was able to fight against both Anakin and Obi-Wan at the same time.

However, his time with the Force is limited. Eventually his Force reserves drain, and he is forced to call upon its power once more—see below.

As you can see, Dooku becomes afflicted with Force exhaustion due to facing against two very powerful Jedi at the same time. His senses lower as he loses his grip on the Force, which causes him to retreat and attempt to replenish his reserves.

Dooku is kicked off of the balcony railing by Anakin Skywalker, and in a split second he is able to call upon just enough of the Dark Side to reorient himself so he avoids snapping his neck on the ground.

I hope this was able to clear up any confusion about how the Force is used. I know it may be a bit confusing and revision may be in order, but I'm sure it will be easier to understand in roleplay.

Light Side
This is the Light Side of the Force:

It does not exist.

In saying there is a powerful Light to vanquish the Dark, one subscribes to the notion that all problems may be easily solved with violence. Perhaps not a physical form of violence, but the form it takes rarely matters.

Those who believe in the Light Side believe there is a way to combat the Dark Side. There is none. The very thought stands to be contradictory; to fight the Dark Side is to fight yourself, for there hides a darkness within us all. Only by embracing this darkness, moving past it, and aspiring to become better will the Dark Side be defeated. Resist the darkness, rather than fight it; accept who you are and become better. These were the actions Luke Skywalker took to turn his father away from *his* darkness.

Dark Side
This is the Dark Side:

A disgusting amalgamation of each of your worst qualities brought to the surface and boiled over the sides. A sickness to which the medicine you refuse because you are content with the way you are. An addiction whose drug constantly pumps through your veins, running your blood hot, clouding your mind and twisting it into something unrecognizable.

It is the feeling of fullness and power and dark and demon mastery—these things and more. It is the complete and feral corruption of the Force for your own epic, ultimate purpose. Its abuse feeds into your own power, strengthens your anger and hatred and jealousy and bends even the natural order of the universe in your favor.

It is the victory of your inner darkness. Your shadow. It is the victory of rage, impulse, over contentment and restraint. It is the culmination of your fight against the darkness as opposed to your resistance against it.

Many have made this mistake: to fight instead of resist. The Jedi Order of old lived in such blind fear of the Dark Side that they did not resist its seduction; only fight it. As did Anakin Skywalker, whose own shadow—Vader—reigned victorious. Only when his son showed him the path to resistance did the shadow finally retreat.

Evil in its purest form. That is the Dark Side.

Force User Lore
Lightsaber crystals, and the subsequent construction of one's own lightsaber, is another aspect of Star Wars that has proven to be needlessly contradictory and convoluted between continuities. I hope I don't have to explain at this point that we'll be fixing that.

A lightsaber is a product of one's own creative process. As Grand Admiral Thrawn would note (if he existed in Rebirth), it serves as a window into the heart and a reflection of its wielder. Not only a lightsaber it constructed with the user's movement and functionality in mind, but with their personal aesthetic as well. This is why no two lightsabers are the same — even if one is modeled after the creator's master's lightsaber, it will still retain the creator's own flair.

Crystals used to generate a blade from the lightsaber's hilt are merely an extension of this creative process. A final piece to the puzzle of personification. They are not living, breathing organisms birthed by the Force; they are natural (or artificial) rock formations created under specific circumstances upon which a Force user happens upon them during their journey.

During the process of lightsaber creation, one must imbue the crystal (or other type of catalyst) with their own Force energy, meditating on it for sometimes days. Without this, the lightsaber is nothing more than a weapon.

As opposed to other Force users, Darksiders rarely find or use natural crystals, as their signature red is uncommon in them. Instead, they usually opt to the corruption of a Jedi crystal, "bleeding" it into a crimson color. In the event this is not possible, or due to personal preference, they will also sometimes create their own synthetic crystal, or use an alternative object/catalyst to generate their blade(s).

Lightsabers do not only require crystals to generate a blade from the emitter. Other objects, such as special technology or even shards of glass can be used. The use of crystals is just the most common way of generating and coloring a blade.

World Physics
Hyperspace, one of Star Wars' many signature aspects. It's been depicted many ways throughout the years, taking many forms and abiding by many sets of rules. This will act as a reference for Rebirth's rules and limitations of hyperspace — what can and can't be done, how long it takes, and anything else in relation.

So, what is hyperspace? This question has been asked many times, and has been answered even more. It seems a different answer comes each time. From parallel dimensions to time machines, it all just seems... too out there. Too unbelievable for the universe it lives in.

For Star Wars Rebirth, it will be a lot more simple than any fo that. Hyperspace is not a parallel dimension, nor a time machine, nor anything else; it is simply an accelerated version of time as seen behind the viewport of a starship. It is accessed via hyperdrive, which, depending on the model, production value, weight of the ship it belongs to, etc., can vary in speed. A hyperdrive is nothing more than a second, super-powered engine that replaces the first in its duties to carry a ship to a destination.

Hyperspace routes are charted areas of space sectioned off for the use of faster and more organized hyperspace travel. They are created with the shortest distance from one planetary body to another. Usually, routes are designed to have various stops along their path (think of exits on a highway) leading to planetary bodies or other hyperspace routes, but some are meant for direct travel — especially those kept in secret.

Hyperspace lanes are stored inside a ship's navicomputer, and are updated frequently either manually or via the HoloNet. The galaxy is in a state of constant gravitational change, which means charters and mappers of these lanes are never out of work.

Hyperspace travel is not like any Earthly transportation you can think of. To put things into perspective, it takes NASA three days to get to the moon without hyperspace, and it's 238,900 miles away.

One parsec equals 3.26 light years. One light year is equal to 5.88 trillion miles. The distance between Coruscant, a Core World, and Corellia, another Core world, sits at roughly 2,600 parsecs (almost eight and a half million light years).

Space is vast. Almost incomprehensibly vast, especially within the universe of Star Wars, which is why outlining and laying out the rules in a clear manner is important.

Hyperspace travel is not a small thing. It may seem so within the confines of the cockpit of a YT-1300 freighter or the glass canopy of an X-Wing star fighter, but the truth is that the speeds accessed by these ships are beyond anything we can dream of.

With this in mind, I am not going to be too strict with how hyperspace works. Keep the duration it takes above minutes, to hours and closer to days to a week (depending on the distance, of course). Be realistic and do not give yourself or your character(s) an unfair advantage with the intention of being the best or the coolest.

Clones
Clones are the former soldiers of the Grand Army of the Republic, and make up a fraction of the Empire's infantry. Bred from the genetic makeup of a formidable bounty hunter by the name of Jango Fett, the clones were engineered for prolonged engagement, obedience, and little else.

During the Clone War, Clones became subject to intensive training in the form of simulated combat exercises, where they were taught how to respond to their programming. In this way, they could be sent into combat as unthinking instruments of war, programmed only to do what was required of them.

To aid in their combat effectiveness, they were also engineered to be much more durable than their genetic donor — this was seen in the later years of the Empire's reign, where, even after twenty years, the Clones still kept the body of young men.

Alongside the modifications made to their body by the Kaminoans, the Clones were also outfitted with specialized storage chips in their brains. These chips contained multitudes of battle codes, callsigns, and, most importantly, orders.

When the Clone War ended with the death of General Grievous, Chancellor Palpatine sent out a galaxy-wide broadcast to each Clone Commander with the simple message: Activate Order 66. This message triggered a reaction within the Clones' storage chips, and in turn, their minds, which inhibited them from acting against their orders. As years passed and the Republic became the Empire, Clone Troopers were incorporated into the Stormtrooper corps, of which they each served diligently and without question, even after the destruction of the Second Death Star.

The Imperial Court
The Imperial Court is a division of Force Sensitive agents that serve the Empire. They serve the Magistrate and do not usually interact with Vader face-to-face with the exception of special circumstances.

Unlike the Inquisitors, the Court hold more political sway, and are often commissioned as advisers or overseers during meetings of the Senate, or other important political gatherings.

Their ranks are as follows:

Viscount / Viscountess -> Count / Countess -> Judge -> Magistrate

Counts and Viscounts operate hand-in-hand with one another, their dynamic often taking on that of a traditional master-apprentice relationship if needed. They are most often dispatched by the Magistrate to assist in important military operations — and yes, this includes the extermination and / or apprehension of Force Sensitives. When not on these assignments, Counts and Viscounts spend their time investigating anything in relation to the Force. Artifacts, temples, potential Force users, etc.

Judges carry more political and military responsibility than their inferiors. They often work alongside the Imperial Security Bureau in internal affairs — together they quench infighting, root out spies amongst Imperial ranks, and deal with traitors and any others who would seek to do the Empire wrong, inside or out. They are not specialized in the Dark Side.

The Magistrate holds the highest ranking amongst those in the Court; outranking any other in every sense of the word. Their objective is to oversee, train, and manage all Imperial Court members below them, and report directly to Darth Vader. There is only one Magistrate at any given time — this is to prevent unwanted friction within the Court, as well as any uprisings that may occur. The Magistrate is the only member of the Imperial Court who is specially trained in the Dark Side.

Bekara
Bekara is a small, semiarid backwater planet nestled deep within the Outer Rim. Due to its size and low population, it has a neglectful Imperial presence, with only a handful of garrisons spread across its surface. Though hot and dry, its sand dunes are flush with vegetation, and water is more common than on other desert planets, such as Tatooine.

Small towns carved out of sandstone and tattered cloth canopies dot Bekara's surface, with the largest one located along the planet's northern hemisphere — Tipama City.

During the Clone War, Bekara was a Separatist planet, and replete with droid factories. Five years later, many inhabitants have taken to scavenging their remains to either sell or repurpose for their own benefit.

Star Piercer
The Seraphim-Class Star Piercer is a mobile space station which doubles as a repository for Imperial databanks and as the main headquarters for the Imperial Court. Because of its importance in Imperial affairs, the station is subject to a constant fleet escort with no less than two Star Destroyers at a time.

The station is supported by three rings, each of which are inhabited and serve as residential wings for the main star base.

In the uppermost levels of the Star Piercer reside the Magistrate's chamber and an extensive warren of training areas, specialized prison cells, a massive armory, and anything else the Imperial Court requires in order to function.

On the levels below, one of many Imperial databanks across the galaxy is located. The Star Piercer's archives detail an assortment of secrets kept hidden from the galaxy — from Imperial projects on unmapped worlds to information regarding possible threats to the Empire and its citizens, it's all there.

The lowest levels of the Star Piercer are dedicated to maintenance and the base's subsystems. These include storage bays where supplies are packed tightly together in crates, a massive chamber for the engines, and the ship's hyperdrive.
