noemi.

From thirty feet away, Noemi could feel the aggressive party lights soaking through the shadows of the trees. Though the third-year students had just taken their bows in the auditorium, first-years who weren't working tech had assigned themselves the job of decorating for the celebration. Few times a year, the faculty would turn a blind eye to the loud music, smoke-filled bathrooms and beer stains that emerged from the dorms. Though already stamping down the rest of her joint into the ground, the young philosophy student planned on getting criminally fucked that night. She couldn't deny that theatre parties were the best at Canmore. Noemi was barely vigilant enough to sit through all the plays anymore - she would have genuinely enjoyed them if they weren't shoved down her throat by her parents since birth. Theatre used to be something she loved, but warped into a constant reminder of what she could have been.

Upon entering the building, Noemi could already see the place filling up. Few dance students were showing off - but she knew that would change in about an hour. Most of their tiny bodies could hold only two vodka cranberries before going AWOL. Noemi made a beeline for the drinks, hoping she could catch some of the good stuff before it ran out.

CELESTIA ✦

Another act, another roar of applause, another bow, another encore, and another period of standing alone in the dressing room, frantically scrolling through unread text messages and missed call notifications. Several were welcome -- plans from friends to connect at the party later on, a few 'good luck' messages from her sisters and one from her mother, a discount code for a popular online clothes retailer -- but these were not the majority.

getting worse
where are you? call me back
why did you even go to college?
literally sunny, how can you ignore me?
help me
call me-- i'm scared, please

"Yes, Percy," Celestia murmured, glancing at her face in the mirror, tinged blue by the lighting of her phone screen. "I'm scared too."

She took a deep breath, ignoring the gnawing feeling of guilt in the pit of her stomach. It wasn't like she could rush back, not now: she had a party to attend, and she'd made so many promises to her other siblings that she wouldn't ruin her college experience by fluttering home every few days on the off-chance that Percy really needed her. They had it handled, they'd promised. Although that didn't stop her feeling like a monster as she texted back --

ask lauden for the morphine, he knows the dosage; feel better x

-- and switched off her phone.

Was it so very awful to not want to be a caregiver for the rest of her life? People had assured her that sort of worry was completely rational, but she'd always sworn she'd seen a flicker of disgust in their eyes as they offered their advice and reassurances. Sometimes she even caught herself wondering if her brother was sick at all, when he seemed to be able to feel healthy on a whim-- wishful thinking, she understood that, but she couldn't help her curiosity. She was human, after all.

Even if she liked to pretend otherwise. Celestia moved back to the mirror to touch up a thick layer of stage makeup and make it more part-appropriate. A sweep of gloss for her lips, a dab of glitter for her eyes. Perfume dotted behind her ears, swept along her clavicle, touched to her inner wrists. She threw her dress on and laced her shoes. People always chastised Celestia for her outfits -- "you must be freezing -- but she didn't care; she'd rather risk hypothermia than wear anything bland. In a cloud of sweet perfume and curly blonde hair, she left the dressing room scattered in makeup and flowers and pages of her old script.

~

As she neared the party, she wondered if perhaps she ought to have waited for her fellow cast members. Too late now, though. She paused to look at the black screen of her phone, but stuffed it firmly into her purse before the temptation to turn the device back on became too strong. Tonight was about fun, making an appearance, and getting completely wrecked. Which she didn't do often, but felt she deserved. For once, Celestia was planning to let loose, to abandon her carefully cultivated persona while everyone was too wasted to notice or to remember.

Before she'd even crossed the threshold, she'd uncorked a bottle of champagne she'd brought with her, and was now swigging from the glass bottle itself. There was something simultaneously trashy and fascinating about drinking from the bottle, since the fact that it was Moët & Chandon rather than cheap beer made the whole affair seem almost oxymoronic. She headed for the refreshments table regardless: she'd only brought one bottle with her, and it was probably advisable to stash something for when that ran out.

It was a mix-your-drinks sort of evening.

Parties weren't Celestia's typical scene. Of course, she always made a point of showing up and making her presence known, but she rarely stayed for long. Not because she didn't drink, or didn't enjoy parties, but because they simply didn't fit with her image of perfection. A lovely porcelain-doll-of-a-girl, successful student, devoted actress like Celestia shouldn't be scene flung over a toilet bowl hacking her guts up, or grinding on a stranger by the kitchen sink, especially when she came from a family as well known as her own. Aside from a select few, seeing Celestia with a drink in her hand would shock people, particularly such a sizable amount. She took another sip, and wondered for a moment how much money she'd just swallowed.

Worth the price, regardless. The champagne washed away the taste of ashes in her mouth, and allowed her to settle into her surroundings and watch the blossoming party begin to unfold.

Nazario was beaming at the final bow. Partially because, despite not being able to see the faces in the crowd due to the lights, he knew who was watching. His smile was contagious as he walked backstage to change. It was time to party.

In all honesty he wasn’t even much of a partier. He’d much rather hang out at home and watch a movie with a joint. This was a theatre party though. That meant he had to go. With the same face in his mind as before he knew going would be worth it.

Turning his phone back on he saw texts from his sister, from his almost brother-in-law, and from some friends back home. All cheering him on. His smile warmed at them. A missed call from his mother. A voicemail.

Her small voice spoke Spanish in the recording. “You are making me so proud, my darling son. Be safe tonight, the winds feel too cold.” His heart pounded in his chest. Those were the words she had spoken before he had left with his father that night.

The images of shattered glass and blood haunted him, but were eased by her final sentence. “I love you my boy, I am alright.” He smiled.

estoy segura, mamá, come sopa para el frío. the queiro.

By the time Nazario sent the text only a couple of people remained backstage. He found his way to the only one he was looking for. Eliza.

Glancing around to ensure no one was looking he placed a kiss on her forehead before stepping back an appropriate amount. He looked at the jacket she had on. “Te ves mejor que yo en esa chaqueta,” he laughed as he opened the door for her to step outside first. His hands longed to hold hers. He respected why he couldn’t. Why she didn’t want him to.

Still, he couldn’t help glancing at hers as he placed his within his pockets.

elton bby! i'm on my wayyyyyyyy

She hit send before she shut her room door behind her and stuck her keys in the small bag she had over her shoulder. She had stopped back at her room to touch up her look after the play ended, before heading to the party. The theatre parties were known to be the best and the biggest on campus, like frat parties ar other schools just without the cult-y weirdness that comes with Greek life. She had styled her hair into her usual half-up, half-down. and had sunglasses propped on her head. Of course, it was too dark for sunglasses and she was going to be indoors but it completed her look.

The moment she stepped out of her room, she could hear the music from the party pulse throughout the building. She felt bad for the poor souls who were choosing not to attend the party because chances were, they were not going to get a night of quality sleep, or any sleep at all. Personally, she felt that they should just show up and enjoy themselves, but to each their own. Though, she was not willing to let her friends be nanny-no-funs. So, she was on her way to drag Elton to the party. Whether he liked it or not.

Well, she wouldn't force him to go, that would be mean. But, she just wanted to help get him out of his shell. Also, she had an agenda of her own tonight- to get smashed, and it would be nice to have someone there with her. She was all too aware of today's date. It would have been her brother's 24th birthday today and she intended to use the party as her unhealthy coping mechanism. To say she has accepted and moved on from her brother's death would be a lie, but nobody knew that at home or here at Canmore. Except there was one person.

As usual, she shoved those uncomfortable and painful thoughts out of her head and continued about her business. Her room was not far from Elton's, so she was there in no time at all. She knocked on his door repeatedly. "Elton! Devinez qui est ici!" Josie called through the door, waiting for him to answer.

A small, proud smile rested on Eliza's face as she watched the play. Due to personal reasons, particularly her inferiority complex towards her sister's success, she never watched plays that had people she knew as the cast members. It was like admitting she actually enjoyed theatre, and she couldn't stomach the idea of her parents mocking her for that. However, meeting Beau had opened her eyes to more possibilities. As much bitterness as there was between the two, she was grateful for him. If it weren't for him pressuring her to audition for one of the musicals last semester, she would've never met Nazario.

She sat at an end seat towards the middle of the room, a spot she always chose when she was inside a theater. In the past, end seats meant a quicker exist in case she had to leave. Somehow, that changed to being to get out quickly so she could wait backstage for Nazario. That feeling only intensified as of late, and she felt her heart thump aggressively inside her chest as she made her way through the crowds and towards the place she knew she could find him.

"Amazing, as always." Eliza commented, hands jittery from the amount of serotonin suddenly being sent throughout her body. Her smile had grown tenfold, reaching from ear to ear as Nazario stepped closer. The smell of his cologne quickly filled her nose as the temperature in the room got warmer. When he bent to kiss her forehead, her cheeks burned.

"Oh my god. La gente verá(People will see)." The female hissed as she lightly hit Nazario on the arm. The pink hue of her cheeks contradicted her words as she bit back a grin. Then she laughed. "Lo sé (I know). A lot of your clothes do."

Eliza walked next to Nazario as she hugged his jacket around her. She'd catch his eyes on her occasionally, the warm fuzziness from earlier returning each time. Fingers lightly tapping against her arms, she couldn't help but admire the male. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. Perfect personality. It made her wish over and over again that she had met him before Beaumonte. It made her wonder how much happier she would feel right now, if that were possible. However, it also made her think about how she wouldn’t have to feel horrible for cheating.

A lump formed in her throat the closer they got to the Castle. She would've preferred going to her or Nazario's dorm to watch a movie and eat stale popcorn, mostly because she knew her ex would be there. Their breakup was fresh on her mind, having occurred fairly recently. Eliza looked at Nazario, their arms brushing against each other, and her hazel-green eyes were filled with guilt.

"What are the odds Beau and I see each other?" She asked quietly. It was the first public gathering she'd been to--aside from the play--since their separation where she knew he'd be in attendance, and she didn't know if she was ready to stand face-to-face to Beau yet.

A huff slipped out from between Montgomery’s lips as his fingers flitted along the drinks table, hovering over one bottle after another. It was his own fault for expecting anything but garbage, of course- after two years of theater afterparties, plus a few extra here and there, he ought to know that he’d be lucky to find something above mid-shelf, let alone something actually worth drinking. Once again, if he wanted a passable drink, he’d have to make it himself.

He grabbed a cup, starting with a splash of vodka. A light one, to make sure that the final product wasn’t too strong. Tonight, he was aiming for a light buzz to take the edge off of things. A few sips would be plenty to provide that, and then he’d be free to wander with a cup full of plausible deniability as everyone around him lost their inhibitions. Between the spread of liquor, the haze of smoke building outside the Castle doors, and the odd sound of snorting and pills rattling from behind closed doors, it was only a matter of time before things got fun, and Montgomery intended to bear witness to all of it.

The mixers, next. Orange juice was the natural choice, and Montgomery swirled the two together as he scoured the table for the finishing touch. Really, he didn’t have much of a reason to be here. At best, he was a supporter, so far behind the scenes that he barely warranted a second glance. None of this was to say he wouldn’t stay and circulate. With luck, he’d be able to nab some cute little thing quickly enough to rub them in Beaumonte’s face before he left for someplace more secluded.

Beaumonte. The thought of that hypocrite made his lips twitch down as he added a touch of cranberry juice. The man had held so much potential, and for a blissful moment, Montgomery had felt certain that he’d swayed him over from a mere friend to something more intimate. As soon as the sun came up, Beau proved him wrong, shoving him out with a deluge of slurs and off-color jokes that hadn’t let up since. Truth told, he'd come tonight in the hopes of seeing the things blow up in the homophobic prick's face. Rumor had it Pérez was showing up tonight with Beau's ex-beard- which, quite frankly, was good for Pérez. Good for the girl as well, based on what he'd seen and felt of the other theater major.

He topped the cup off with a dash of seltzer, leaving the half-empty can in the middle of the drinks table to slip back into the main throng. Hopefully things would start to get interesting- and sooner rather than later. Should the tide start to turn against Beaumonte, Montgomery wanted to be right there for it.

The music filled the entire campus and honestly? It activated Nazario’s fight or flight instincts. Managing to relax himself, even as the smell of alcohol filled his nose and brought back memories he wished could be forgotten, he looked down at Eliza. He thought about her question as he looked at the door to the Castle.

“I don’t know. I’ll do my best to make sure you don’t.” He paused before they went in. “Let’s just do a couple rounds, and then bail. Since it’s my big night that means you have to watch a horror movie with me.” He smiled as he guided her in, hand on her lower back as she entered.

He retracted it as soon as the threshold was cleared. The party was overwhelming his senses already. God he hated alcohol. Brown eyes landed on Beaumonte pretty quickly, and he easily lead Eliza in a different direction as he greeted some of his cast mates.

Elton nearly tripped on his poorly placed sneakers when he read Josie's text and had to stumble out of his bed. It completely slipped his mind that Canmore's theatre kids had the habit of throwing afterparties that Josie loved to drag him to. Normally, they would have watched the productions together, go back to her dorm for her to touch-up, and get wasted at the party - or at least Josie would, and Elton would normally stay as sober as possible to help her back to her dorm. But when Beau showed how upset he was with not getting the lead role in their performance of Macbeth the night before, Elton feigned a stomach ache just so he wouldn't see that look on his face. Seeing Beaumonte enraged always sent a shiver down his spine. So instead of trying to witness Beau play a role that wasn't the lead, Elton stayed in his dorm and played a good game of Sonic to take his mind off of it. A decision he now regretted and made him wish to be the blue speeding hedgehog himself for him to be ready in time when Josie arrived. Or else he'd be attending the party in socks, a bleach stained Batman T-shirt, and a pair of boxers - not the best look for an event.

okay :'))

He quickly hit send then darted for his closet in search for something at least half-way decent to wear. Luckily, there was no better default than a plain shirt, black jeans and a dark denim jacket, it wasn't the most creative approach, but it also didn't scream I-didn't-rush-this-outfit-under-a-minute which would give him one less thing to worry about. When Josie came knocking on his door he had just managed to fumble into his pants, with her dorm room not being far from his, it was no surprise that she was already at his door. He didn't respond to her knocks, being too focused on throwing on a shirt, if she chose to barge in, at least she wouldn't see things he didn't want her to see. It was when she called out to him while he was putting on his sneakers that he spoke back. "You know I cant understand you when you speak French!" As much as he tried to learn some French to understand some of lyrics Josie would write and let him read, he was an amateur at best and heavily relied on Google Translate. His small attempt to stall proved to be fruitful when he managed to tie up his last shoe and reach for his jacket, dorm key, and phone. An awkwardly apologetic smile was on his face when he opened the door to Josie. Though his attire seemed appropriate for a party, the condition of his hair said otherwise. "You look nice." His sorry smile only grew as he complimented his friend.

When he exited his room the more-than-faint beats of whatever music was playing at the party taunted him, how did he not remember about the afterparty? He had only his own music to blame, it was a blessing that he wasn't already deaf from blasting songs into his ears on the daily. Before he could mentally facepalm at himself, he focused his attention to Josie. Parties were never his scene. Before he was friends with Josie, he'd sometimes just go for the sake of going but most times he was too overwhelmed with the thought of substance-crazed students going batshit crazy and chose to stay out of that. Josie was almost the exact opposite of him, and although he normally responds to her invitations to go with her to these events with reluctance, Elton appreciates her attempts to get him comfortable around people nonetheless.

But how can he be comfortable around grinding college students who smell of cheap alcohol laced with vomit? Maybe he'll just find a nice corner to stand in and pretend to check his phone if ever he gets unwanted attention...

noemi.

By the time most of the crowd had flooded into the castle, Noemi was already on her second glass of wine. Most people were clumped in groups of four or five, dancing happily with drinks in hand. She spotted a few stragglers - one of them being Beaumonte. He leaned against a wall beside the stairwell, drinking his way through a full bottle of scotch. For a moment, Noemi considered talking to him. Recently, they hadn't been on great terms. The once inseparable childhood friends were now distant and cold. Though Beau had moved on, Em was stuck yearning for their old conversations.

Her cheeks were just starting to flush from the wine as Celestia approached the drink table.

"Hey, T!" Noemi placed her hand on her shoulder to get her attention. "What the fuck is wrong with Beau?" Celestia and Noemi weren't exactly friends, but the only way the philosophy major could keep tabs on her former-best friend was asking his peers. As years went by, Noemi became semi-close with a lot of the theatre students. Her philosophy friends were fine, but something about the aura of theatre always drew her in.

By the time Noemi had looked back towards the stairwell, Beaumonte was gone. While she was preoccupied, he had gone to the second floor to his room. It was incredibly unlike the popular theatre major to skip out on a party, but a lot had been on his mind the past few days. There was a fire inside of him, and the kindling was dancing downstairs with his ex-girlfriend. He took another swig from the now three-quarters full bottle, silently burning up. The image of himself stabbing Rio in Act V brought him some sort of twisted joy - he might have not been the star, but he was the winner in his own sort.

As much as she knew she shouldn't have, Eliza found herself stepping closer to Nazario. There was a warmth where his hand touched her back, the only thing preventing her skin from being set on fire being the material of his soft, black jacket. She craved the feeling of his skin against her own, but that could wait. When everything passed and Beaumonte wasn't wallowing over their break up, she could finally hold his hand and do other physical displays of affection.

The yearning feeling dissipated at the mention of a horror movie. Eliza hated horror movies. Years spent being alone in the dark filled her thoughts with darkness and fright. Her childhood home was large and her family was never home, leaving her to her own devices. Bathroom trips were awful, even though she had a personal one that was connected to her room. Water or snack trips were worse, and she recalled countless nights where she'd trip on the stairs because she heard a sound and thought someone was coming at her with a knife. Horror was awful, but it was an okay genre with Nazario around.

"You just want an easy pass to cuddle with me," Eliza teased, lips curving up into a smirk as she stepped away from his hand. There were people everywhere, some drunk, some not so drunk, some even high off their asses. The smell of alcohol tickled her nose in an unpleasant way, and she already wanted to bail. Don't get her wrong, though. Eliza didn't hate alcohol, she just hated how irresponsible and dumb some people could be with it in their system. Particularly, the dancing couple in a nearby corner that were doing inappropriate moves with some cups in their hands.

She scrunched her nose in distaste before throwing on another smile as Nazario greeted his cast mates. She was acquaintances with some of them from when they did their musical together last semester, however, most of them were faces she recognized but didn't really know. They seemed to be familiar with her, though, since she was Beau's girlfriend and his rival's best friend and all.

"Beau still talks about you sometimes." One of girls said, her eyes flickering to Nazario so flirtatiously that it almost made Eliza gag.

"Oh, does he?" Eliza said, fixing two virgin mimosas with dry, sparkling white grape juice instead of champagne for Nazario and herself. It was the perfect amount of sourness and sweetness to combat the bitterness that was beginning to form in the back of her throat. She took a sip of it and glanced at her companion before returning her attention to his cast mate. "Yeah, well. Relationships will do that to you. He'll move on."

She couldn't figure out what was bothering her more: the fact that someone was eye-fucking Nazario right in front of her or the fact that she could feel gazes on them. The judgement crept up her skin like hands slowly closing around her neck. Eliza didn't even know if people were actually looking at her, but it felt like her failed, childhood piano recitals all over again. The laughing. The fingers. The crying.

Eliza blinked when she realized the girl was still talking. "Sorry, what was that again?"

"Oh, I was saying you should audition for musicals more often because girl, your acting and singing are A-plus."

"I'll think about it." Eliza laughed, eyes flickering to Nazario as she started recalling all the nights they'd spent running lines together.

“All the more reason for me to speak en français around you. Otherwise you’ll never learn,” she teased. She didn’t actually care if her friends learned or not. She figured he was getting ready still. She leaned against the door frame, waiting for him to open the door. Greeting him with a bright smile when he finally did. “Finally,” she sighed with mock impatience. She just laughed and said a quick “thanks” for the compliment before grabbing his arm and dragging him to the party.

As Josie was dragging Elton through the hall, she nearly ran into Beaumonte of all people when they approached the stairwell. Strange, as he usually never misses a party. Though by the bottle in his hand and the look on his face, that he was not in the mood for a party. She supposed she was not the only one who would be drinking their feelings away that night. “Sorry Beau!” she called over her shoulder as she continued on. Normally, she would stop and ask what was wrong, but he did not look to be in the mood to talk, so she didn’t want to push it.

She trotted to the stairs and they finally found their way to the party. The smoke was swirling through the air and she made a mental not to double check if she brought her inhaler. Otherwise she was ready to party. She could feel the music pulsing in her chest. She turned and grinned at Elton. “Want anything to drink?” she asked as she made her way to the drinks. Before she poured herself or Elton anything, she pulled out her phone and shot a quick text to Beau.

you okay, b?

She wanted to give him an opportunity to talk if he wanted, but in a way where he can just ignore it if he didn’t want to. She quickly got to work on her drink, pouring “two shots” of vodka into a cup and topping it off with a bit of sprite and cranberry juice. “So what’s it gonna be, Elton? Soda, water, alcohol? Your choice.”

“Hey, Montgomery,” she greeted as she waited for Elton’s request.

Montgomery glanced back at the sound of Josie’s voice. As always, her outfit looked every bit as bright and vivid as her demeanor, and the smile on her face brought a little extra lightness to his own expression. “Ah, Miss Everheart!” He shot her a friendly wink for good measure, drawing in for a quick air-kiss. “It’s good to see you tonight.”

His eyes drew past her to the man trailing in her wake, and his eyebrows twitched upwards. Seems Jo had brought a friend along- and not a bad-looking one, either. He let his gaze wander for a beat or two, up and down the stranger’s body. On the tall side, with a certain sprezzatura in his outfit that worked quite nicely on him. A soft-looking face, with wide brown eyes and a gorgeous, if nervous, smile. Hair that fell into sweet little curls that looked like they’d be awfully fun to pull.

Clearly, someone worth getting to know, in one sense or another.

He turned his grin back to Josie. “Jo, I didn’t know you were bringing a date!” A calculated risk- if he was right, no harm done; if he was wrong, he’d be free to make his move. With a soft, playful swat at Josie’s shoulder, he added, “I don’t know how you do it, hon. Do you have some kind of a talent for finding the cute ones, or what?” His eyes flicked back to the man for a beat, just to wink at him.

Seeing Beau stomping up the stairs was like a bad omen. He was the black cat walking across Elton's path, the umbrella that shouldn't be opened indoors, or whatever unfortunate event that comes with walking under a ladder. Just an overall, bad sign. And whether it was Elton's anxiety making up excuses not to go to this party or an actual divine sign from whatever god that's up there, it made Elton more on edge than he normally is. He didn't try to talk to Beau when him and Josie almost bumped into him, Beau never really acknowledged him on campus and the look on his pretty face was... intense. Like if Elton were to say the wrong thing, the bottle that the theatre kid clenched in his hand would soon make contact with Elton's curly little head. Not that Beaumonte would do that to him though. He knew him well enough to know that the guy just needed to blow off some steam, damaged pride and all that, and if he wanted to talk about it, he'd just send a text.

His eyes lingered before Elton had to focus on trying not to twist a limb from falling down the flight of stairs - to his embarrassment it's happened before in his first year, and he wouldn't want a repeat in front of Josie. After avoiding any possible injury those safety hazard stairs tried to throw at him, his senses were slowly being filled with the heavy beat of music and the smell of alcohol and soda as they drew closer to the party. Upon entering, it was the usual scene, decorations, drinks, and the type of music the dance majors would flaunt their skills to. He could only laugh when Josie directly went for the drinks table, he didn't really plan on getting wasted like she was, but he followed her lead nonetheless. "I'll just have a soda. Someone has to walk you back to your dorm when you get fucked up tonight." It was when he was snickering at his own joking remark that he noticed the blonde man standing no-so-far away from the two. When Josie greeted him, Elton wasn't surprised that she knew him, being the social butterfly that she is, it was normal to see her greet other students every now and then. But... if Elton didn't know any better, this Montgomery guy was looking at him. Not in the way most would, it wasn't a glance of acknowledgment or any coincidental gaze, it was borderline eye-fucking.

It was then Elton considered asking for a stronger drink.

"I-I'm not her date - we're just friends." He wanted to bite his tongue when he caught himself stuttering out a response. The subtle compliment from Montgomery rendered him a wreck. It was like he was a deer caught in headlights; this was far from what he expected to happen to him at this party. He planned on just getting a drink for him nurse in a corner where he'd lie-low while Josie did her thing. This was not on the agenda. And while he had to admit, upon looking at this Montgomery fellow a bit more, Elton did find him quite pleasing to look at but what about - holy shit, did he just wink at him?

CELESTIA ✦

Though they didn't often talk one-on-one, Celestia was surprised by how grateful she was that Noemi had approached her. She smiled warmly, lips still painted blood-red so the spotlight wouldn't wash them out, and took another sip from her bottle as her gaze followed Noemi's over to the edge of the room. Her brow furrowed in momentary concern, but the flicker of worry melted away as swiftly as it had appeared. Rather than express genuine sympathy, she threw out her free arm in a gesture of defeat, and offered the champagne to Noemi with a flourish.

"Who knows? Who the fuck even cares?" Celestia giggled, shaking her head. "He's probably still moping about the show. Silly, really-- I thought he did as wonderfully as usual."

Obviously, both girls knew what was really wrong with their mutual sort-of-friend. Or at least, they could take a very educated guess.

Despite her efforts, Celestia's perpetual guilt won over, and she sighed. "I can go pop my head around the door and check on him in a minute, if you'd like. I'm probably going to need to use the bathroom soon; I've been needing it since the Macduffs were murdered."

She lingered, though, almost as though she was nervous, or waiting for something. After a brief pause, her eyes lit up.

"Oh! You look, like, totally cute, by the way."

The wording of the sentence fell awkwardly from her mouth, but the earnest expression across her face betrayed her sincerity. Celestia, for all her popularity and success, just wanted a friend.

The male accepted the drink from Eliza and made sure their fingers brushed a second longer than they needed to. Anything he could do to touch her. He didn’t stop the girls from flirting with him, it’s not like he could, but his tone never shifted from its typical octave. Relaxed. Calm.

God he was fucking anxious.

“Ladies if you’ll excuse us, I’ve got to make a victory lap before anyone starts a fight.” Nazario grinned. He lead Eliza away and leaned down so she could hear him. “I do just want to cuddle with you. You’re absolutely right.” His voice was teasing, bringing up her earlier comment.

“Don’t you know that’s my favorite thing to do?”

His eyes landed on Montgomery, as he narrowly avoided bumping into him. “Shouldn’t you be on your knees somewhere?” He taunted. In all honesty, Nazario had a lot of problems with Montgomery. Yeah, they hooked up, but that was one of his favorite hobbies: sleeping with racists. That’s right, the guy was fucking racist. To top that off he was friends with Beaumonte, if you could call their relationship that. “Oh, sorry, that’s right. In America people say hello.”

"Oh?" Montgomery gave the man another full-body glance and smiled. He seemed completely flustered- stammering and nervous, but (if Montgomery wasn't mistaken) still interested. "Does that mean you came here alone, or-"

A voice cut him off, and his smile very nearly faltered as he turned to look. The star of the show, who Montgomery was pretty sure had just been flirting with a few girls right in front of Eliza. He drew his grin tighter and wider as the happiness drained out of his eyes. "Nazario! Excellent job up there!" he cooed, voice dripping with false friendliness. "You made a flawless corpse in the last act, you know. Ought to consider reprising that bit of the role sometime." As an afterthought, he took a long sip of his drink. He was going to need that shit.

Nazario’s face almost reacted. Almost. It was a funny retort, honestly. He was mildly impressed that Montgomery actually had it in him. “Only if you tailor my funeral tux, I know you’d love the chance to see me naked. Again.” Why was he even fighting with the blonde? Why not was the answer.

“You’re looking a bit flushed, pounding the alcohol already? I guess you need to pound something, don’t you? What with you being a bottom and all.”

"Mmm, no thank you. I'd rather not make the same mistake twice." He smirked, swirling the alcohol in his cup. A lie, and a shockingly blatant one, but no one here needed to know the truth, least of all Pérez. "'A bottom'? Really, is that your idea of an insult? And in mixed company, no less..." He motioned to Elton and Josie.

“I only insult bottoms who want to pose as tops, blondie. I love a good bottom. You just aren’t one.” Nazario’s eyes flickered to the company. They landed on Elton. “Hey man, word of advice? This soggy piece of bread’s not going to love anyone as much he loves himself. And he doesn’t even love himself as much as he loves Beau.” He turned back to Montgomery. “Isn’t that right, bitch boy?”

His eyes narrowed a touch, even as his voice stayed constant."An awfully hypocritical policy, coming from you, you hypocritical, self-absorbed-"

As soon as Beaumonte's name slipped out of his mouth, Monty felt his smile flicker out. The wounds there were a bit too fresh. "Please. I never loved Beaumonte," he said, desperately wishing the words were true.

Nazario shrugged, his hand subconsciously reaching for Eliza to guide her away. “Whatever man. That’s your worry, I’m just warning Elton here.” Honestly? He couldn’t understand why anyone would have feelings for Beaumonte. Not even Montgomery. “If you think I’m so bad in bed why don’t you go see if he’ll bend you over instead? Later, pretty boy.”

"Oh, quit leading her on," Montgomery huffed, rolling his eyes as he reached for his girlfriend. "It's been almost a year since we got together- if you're still this hung up on me, it's obvious you thought I was a better lay than she is." He paused to glance at Eliza, and his smile crept back up, more devious than before. "Well. To be fair, Beaumonte thought so too."

Eliza noticeably winced, a frown settling on her face as she bit back the words that threatened to flow. She didn’t say anything, however, her eyes only narrowing as her tongue clicked with annoyance.
Nazario’s face shifted when he heard the last words and noticed Eliza’s frown. Someone went by with a red cup, he snatched it. Dark liquid. He smiled, not kindly, as he poured it and the cup in his hand over Montgomery’s head. “Go to Hell. I’d call you a slug but that’s an insult to slugs.”

His arm wrapped around Eliza to lead her out to the garden, far away from Montgomery.

Montgomery saw his arm moving- grabbing to the side, glancing in the cup, throwing it all forward- all before he could react. The only thing he could manage was to slam his eyes shut and pray Nazario would miss.

He didn't. Of course he didn't. Montgomery’s face twisted as the liquid hit his face and soaked into his sweater. Standing perfectly still, he took one deep breath after another through clenched teeth, the smell of red wine curling its way up his nose. "I'll see you there, Pérez." Until he heard Nazario's footsteps fade out alongside Eliza's, he stayed stock-still with his eyes still closed. If he opened them to that smug, vapid smile again, there was no way he'd be able to keep his composure.

Josie everhart.
Il n’y a pas de verités moyennes.
Josie poured Elton his soda as Montgomery spoke to her. She caught the looks and the compliment and a frown formed on her lips. She handed Elton his soda before turning back to the blonde. "Uh uh, don't even think about it Montgomery. Elton is way too sweet and too good for your nonsense," she warned, pointing at Monty. She never really got involved in her friends' business like this, but she couldn't help it. She didn't want Elton to end up hurt, and honestly, she believed what she had said. He was too good for Monty.

Before he could even respond, Nazario and Eliza came wandering over. From the moment Nazario opened his mouth, Josie knew this was not going to end well. She had no clue what made him come over and start antagonizing Montgomery, but anyone could see that this was bound to escalate. Insults flew back and forth and Josie honestly couldn't respond when she and Elton were addressed. She only gaped at Elton as Beau was brought into the conversation.

Ah. Seems like his bad mood was contagious. What a bummer, she just wanted a relaxed, easygoing night. Looks like that won't be happening.

Nazario's movement to throw the cup of something at Monty instinctively made Josie take a step back. As the, what looked like, wine hit Monty, her jaw dropped. Some of the droplets ended up on her face and in her hair, but she just wiped it away with her palm. Monty, however, was soaked. "Merde," she mumbled. She hesitated before she decided to say anything to Montgomery. She didn't want to set him off or have him direct his anger at her. She was having a shit day too, no need to make it any worse.

"That was... something" she commented. She knew better than to ask if he was okay. Who would be in his situation? She looked down at the cup in her hand before downing the drink she had just poured herself and proceeded to make another. She turned to Elton.

"You sure you just want a soda? Because I am too sober for this right now."

Eliza had wondered why she allowed Nazario to talk to Montgomery. She knew it was going to end badly as soon as she heard the first words that came from her friend's mouth, but she couldn't do anything, or rather, she didn't want to do anything. She was tired of fighting. There was enough of that over the summer with her and Beau constantly screaming at each other, plus the remarks coming from both their mouths were a bit amusing.

That was until Eliza was brought into the fray. Montgomery's words stung more than she wanted. While her feelings for Beaumonte had died off long ago, the realization that their private life was far from normal was still fresh. She never thought about how she should've received just as must as she gave. All she was looking for was attention, and her ex-boyfriend gave her exactly that, whether it were healthy or not.

Before she knew it, she was being led away. Nazario's strong arm was around her, and he hadn't retracted it even as they exited into the quiet garden. There were a few people there, but for the most part it was just them standing under the dimly lit night sky. She looked up at him, her hard expression softening as she felt a chill run down her spine. It had gotten significantly colder within the last few minutes, but her body felt warm the more she looked at the man in front of her.

"¿Por qué hiciste eso? (Why'd you do that?)" Eliza sighed, reaching for some of the tissue she always carried around with her. After urging him to lean down the female began lightly dabbing at the bits of wine that had sneaked onto Nazario's tan skin, her fingers brushing against his soft lips. Her lips curved upwards slightly, tone a bit lighter. "I thought you were a pacifist."

"Yeah... that bottle of vodka isn't looking too bad anymore."

Elton still needed a second to process everything that just devolved. He was usually quite good at sensing trouble moments before it happens, but when Nazario and Eliza had come up to the drinks table, Elton was admittedly still caught off guard from that blasted wink.

But when Montgomery opened his mouth to give his venom-filled "compliment" to the lead actor, he was rushed out of his little freeze of confusion and was thawed into probably one of the most uncomfortable moments of his life. Elton was left speechless at the words the two had thrown at each other, even when him and Josie were acknowledged , all Elton could do was turn to Josie, looking desperately displeased. The two didn't plan on being in the middle of a fight when they came to this party. And Elton didn't plan nor enjoy it when he was used as a subtle way to insult Montgomery, and he especially didn't enjoy it when Beau got brought into the conversation either. It was clear to Elton that Montgomery wasn't the most... committed fellow and like him, still felt a spark for a certain Beaumonte. Elton had tried not to think too hard on it, if he were to he'd risk letting his emotions get the best of him. He did however, think fast and took a step back when Nazario chucked his drink at his blonde acquaintance(?) The stray droplets from the drink had found their way on Elton's hair and face, but it wasn't nearly as bad (or as much) as what Montgomery had on him. It sorta reminded him of Carrie.

And that brings us to the present.

After placing his cup of soda back on the table for Josie to spike with some vodka, he looked at the man covered in... wine? Elton wasn't quite sure. He knew that he didn't have it in him to just leave Montgomery there, but he hesitated nonetheless. The buildup of courage didn't take too long as Elton picked up some tissues that were stacked on the table and walked in front of the drink-stained blonde. "Hey... that was pretty intense back there." Elton learned from all of his long talks with Beau that asking if a person is okay when they're clearly not will just lead you into looking stupid. And he already felt like he left a dumb impression earlier with his stuttering shit show. "I got you some tissues but you'd probably need to rinse off with water if you want all of that drink off of you." Elton tried not to mention nor acknowledge anything Nazario had said that involved him, he wasn't in the mood to be let down and Montgomery was clearly not in the mood either. Or Elton assumed he wasn't, he couldn't anymore see the burning rage in his eyes that kindled from the argument moments ago because his piercing blue eyes were still closed. Elton found his own eyes softening at the other, a mixture of concern and pity brewed within him as he waited for Montgomery to look at him. The awkward smile that faded before had grown back, probably more awkward than the last even. He knew Josie was probably judging him, but he couldn't help but, well, help.

It was one of the many weaknesses he has, and even if Montgomery gave him quite a number of red flags, and two people already warned him just in the span of a couple of minutes, they all weren't going to stop him from helping the guy out. It's not like helping him wipe off a thrown drink is equivalent to him falling in love, right?

With the wine drying and turning tacky on his face, any thoughts Montgomery had about Josie’s accusations of “his nonsense” vanished. He paused another moment, taking one more deep breath with his eyes shut tight. The silence from Jo and Elton was unnerving in itself- it was a signal that he’d truly lost sight of his composure, and that on some level, they didn’t trust him to keep control.

Opening his eyes and letting his face drop into a weary, worried smile, he turned first to Josie. “Oh, Jo- did he get any on you, love? I’m so, so sorry…” He fumbled at the drink table, searching for napkins and offering them up to her. “If any got on your clothes, let me know. I’ll pay for the dry cleaning, since it’s somewhat my fault.”

From the corner of his eye, he saw the man slink back in with a handful of tissues. “And you- Elton, was it?” He looked to him, gaze softening even further. “Oh, you’re sweet. You really didn’t deserve to get caught up in that, you know- Nazario and I have bad blood, and I should have known he’d turn to crude ad hominem attacks.”

He split the tissues into two smaller stacks and wiped his face with one. “Thank you, darling. My name is Montgomery, by the way.” With the other, he reached out to dab at a few stray droplets on Elton’s arm. “It’s unfortunate that we had to meet in such heated circumstances.” Slowly, even a little timid, he drew his gaze back up to meet his dark eyes, gentle and concerned.

Nazario let Eliza clean his face. His eyes stayed focused on her for a little while before he sighed. Should he tell her right then? He wanted to wait until they got back to his dorm.

He had planned it all out. Circle the party, go back to the dorm, surprise her with flowers. Kiss her a few times. Now was a good time.

“I did it because I love you and I didn’t like the look on your face when he said that.” He ran his hand through his hair. “I’m sorry I even said anything I didn’t expect it to escalate that much.”

Eliza looked up at him, something flickering in her eyes that was unrecognizable. They started to brim with what looked like tears as her lips parted. “No, don’t apologize for that. Especially when I lo-“

et tu, bruté?

The words were brutal. The curl of his lips when Nazario said those three words made Beaumonte sick. His blood curdled, sending a chill down his spine.

"You fucking whore," like ice, the words slid out of his mouth before he could think. Sure, plenty of times he had jokingly called Eliza that - but this time was genuine. The two had barely broken up, and she was already throwing around 'love' like it was nothing.

Beau had been watching from his dorm room for most of the party, nursing a bottle of scotch. He hadn't planned on doing anything rash, but seeing Rio and that bitch made him unbelievably angry. Watching her wear his jacket - holding his hand; made him feel things he hadn't experienced before. For all twenty-one years of his life, he never lost. Easily, he was able to slip through the crowd and catch the secret lovers before they finished their declarations of love. The drunken student pushed himself from the doorway, approaching the two like a prowling lion.

"So," he leaned into Rio, his breath bitter with liquor. "You like taking my leftovers?" He chuckled inwardly. "You take my roles, my girlfriend - what's next? You want my fucking trust fund, poor boy?" By now, people from inside had heard him yelling. A small crowd of murmuring students formed, none of them ballsy enough to step in. Luckily, that was exactly what Beamonte wanted - an audience for his Shakespearean monologue.

For the first time, Beau turned his gaze to Eliza. His eyes drilled into her face like daggers - it took him a moment to form his words. "Yaknow, I thought to myself after you broke up with me, 'God, the other guy must be hot! Or at least rich.' Turns out he was neither."

His head snaps back to Rio, lips snarled back.

"You know what? You can have my slut girlfriend. But first -"

Before anyone could stop him, he drew his fist back. The blow hit Nazario's jaw hard.

Eliza was abruptly cut off by a familiar voice. She turned, noticing Beaumonte slither up to Nazario like a viper read to strike. Being called his 'leftovers' didn't sit right at all with her. Her lips pursed.

"What the fuck, Beau?" She pushed Beaumonte away, placing herself between the two men so her ex would have to face her and not the guy she would've spilled her heart out to if they weren't interrupted. "God, what is your problem? Is this what you've always been like?"

She turned to Nazario with pain-filled eyes, fingers lightly touching his face where Beaumonte had landed the blow.

Beaumonte was barely phased by Eliza pushing him back. He was in some weird dreamlike state - it’s like none of it was actually real. The only thing that reminded him of his mortality was the sting of where his knuckles hit Rio’s face.

“Come on, baby,” his words slurred. “You know I’m not usually like this.” He grabbed her wrist, harder than he intended.

“It’s just,” he squeezed even more. He didn’t even make eye contact with her, his gaze firmly set on Nazario. “You can do so much better than this fuckin’ freak

Eliza yelped when she was jerked back, her eyes settling on the hand that was wrapped tightly around her wrist. With her free hand, she tried to pry the male off before her normally confident voice came out meek.

"Let go, Beau. You're hurting me!" She winced when she felt his grip tighten, a small cry of pain escaping her lips.

Jesus Christ, Beau.” Nazario’s voice was harsh as he rubbed his face. It had hurt. He was a little surprised the other male had it in him. He barely registered anything Eliza said until he heard her cry out in pain.

He didn’t think. He didn’t say anything. Before he knew what he was even doing he had returned Beaumonte’s blow, directly into his nose. He assumed it broke by the force of the impact and the angle, but he wouldn’t swear it.

Eliza had screamed his name.

“Don’t fucking touch her. Don’t even look at her. Don’t think about her.” Adrenaline was coursing through his veins now, and he didn’t even remember his face hurting.

Beau began to bleed, his nose and mouth like a faucet of red. It didn’t even matter that Rio had definitely destroyed his nose. He had his fun; took his bow and encore.

The college boy picked up his bottle of scotch and took a quick swig. He flashed his signature smile to the pair, teeth scarily red.

“Have a wonderful evening, lovebirds. Fill all thy bones with aches, make thee roar, or whatever the fuck.” Beaumonte could barely quote Prospero in his drastically drunken stupor.

Before Rio or Eliza could say any more to him, Beaumonte disappeared into the nearby woods.

"Rio, what the hell." Eliza hissed, immediately reaching for the fist that had hit Beaumonte. She didn't care about her ex. He had started the drama and definitely deserved getting punched, but she hated that it was Nazario that landed the blow. His face was already bruising and the skin on his knuckles had somehow broken from how hard he punched.

Nazario watched Beaumonte run into the woods with a glare. He turned to Eliza. “Are you okay?” He put his hands on her cheeks, brushing them with his thumbs. Then realization came crashing back as the adrenaline faded and the pain returned to his face.

One hand moved to his nose. “I think he broke it. Fucking prick.”

“Yeah, I’m okay.” Eliza replied, her expression softening as her hand naturally rose to Nazario’s face. She scowled at the amount of blood and the already growing purple on his skin. “Let’s go to the infirmary. It looks really bad.”

“I’m sorry tonight went like this.” Nazario responded, reaching for her hand. He turned to walk with her to the infirmary. A growing sense of dread in his stomach. Fucking white men.

“I’m sorry you got hit.” Eliza squeezed his hand, ignoring the looks that came their way. People were definitely going to talk now, and for once, rumors were the last of her worries. She just wanted to take care of Nazario.

“I can’t believe you punched him.”

“I couldn’t let him touch you like that.” His answer was blunt. He brought her hand to his mouth to ghost his lips across it. He was still noticeably upset by the interaction. People were looking at them, but he barely registered it. This certainly wasn’t how he expected his night to go.

“I meant it, by the way. I realized I loved you one night when you fell asleep on the phone. It was like five, and I could hear your breathing and I realized how much peace just hearing you breathing brought me. I didn’t hang up until I fell asleep.”

Eliza didn't want to look at him. She knew if she did, she wouldn't be able to stop and he'd see the surge of emotions within her. That's what he deserved, though. Of all the people in her life, Nazario deserved to know how she felt, especially when considering how much they'd been through together.

She stopped in her tracks when they were in front of the infirmary doors. Her hands reached for his cheeks and she pulled the male down for a kiss. Her tongue tasted blood, but that was okay. She just needed him to know she felt the same. "I think that was around the time I realized I loved you too. It was when I got really jealous and didn't answer your call."

Nazario’s whole face ached when she pulled him down, but he didn’t mind it. Not if it meant kissing her. His heart felt like it could burst as he held her waist. “Alright, when we’re done here you definitely owe me at least two horror movies. Alright?”

"Deal."
