Ophelia Hargrave has been to more charity events than she can count. From before she could walk, she was toted to them by her parents several times a year. They were big believers in sharing their wealth and it was also always a good look for her mother’s political career. As dull as they tended to be, Phee usually muddled through gracefully for her parents’ sake. She’d smile and nod as her parents’ friends would tell her how grown up she looks (even though she’s been an adult for quite some time), and she’d give a broad summary of what she’s been doing.

Since graduating from law school, she’s been living at home— in the guesthouse, while she prepared to take the bar examination. However, living with them again came with stipulations and obligations. One of which was attending events just like this one as she did when she was younger. And so she obliged. Ophelia didn’t mind so much, she’s been to about a million of these before.

Or she didn’t mind until now.

Her parents were each stolen away by friends of theirs wanting to talk, leaving her standing alone and off to the side. It’s been some time since she had been to one of these events and it wasn’t like she had friends or her brothers joining her like she used to. No, she was completely alone.

She sipped at the champagne that seemed to always be given more frequently than water at these things. At least it gave her something to hold, so she wasn’t looking completely useless.

Sidelined, she did the only thing she found enjoyable at events like these: people watching. Ophelia observed, and if they were close enough, eavesdropped on the other attendees of the event. What caught her eye was the person walking towards her. It was almost as if he were about to approach her.

Wait. Was he actually approaching her?
