Fantasy Skyrim RP - Settings/Locations

Skyrim is the northernmost landmass of the continent of Tamriel, and is the site of one of the earliest―if not the earliest―civilization founded and governed by Men during the Merethic Era, many thousands of years ago. These early Men arrived on Tamriel by sailing south from the ancient continent of Atmora, the northern-most pinnacle of the world. In present day, Skyrim is home mainly to the direct descendants of these Atmorans, a people known as the Nords; large, hardy men and women who are notorious for their militancy and innate resistance to frost and frost magic, both a consequence of the cold, harsh climate of their homelands. Bordered by Morrowind to the east, Cyrodiil to the south, Hammerfell to the southwest, and High Rock to the west, Skyrim forms the uppermost province of the continent of Tamriel. To the northeast, the Sea of Ghosts borders the Holds of Winterhold, and far northeast lies the island of Solstheim. Skyrim has nine Holds, each is governed by a Jarl, who keep civility and order in their designated Hold. Jarls are largely independent, but swear fealty to Skyrim's High King.

Tamriel is located on the planet of Nirn, which is the mortal realm of the finite and the partial, as opposed to the immortal realms of the infinite and the absolute in Aetherius and Oblivion. Nirn is at the center of Mundus, which is the mortal realm, and is the elven root for the human word "mundane", meaning ordinary. Mankar Camoran once said that Tamriel is an extension of the realm Oblivion, although this could just be the ramblings of the Mythic Dawn. In terms of size, Tamriel is very large and is divided into nine provinces.[8][9]

The name Tamriel is said to mean Starry Heart,[10][11] while it is also Elven for Dawn's Beauty.

Black Marsh, also known as Argonia[1]and Garbage Heap of Tamriel[1], is one of the nine Provinces of Tamriel. It is the home of the Argonians, the reptilian natives of this swampland rainforest. The province is filled with "great inland waterways and impenetrable swamps".[2] The Dunmerof neighboring Morrowind used to enter the region for slaves, particularly House Telvanni.[3] Some time after the Nerevarine left Morrowind, slavery was outlawed. Topal the Pilot is known to have referred to the land as the "fetid, evil swamp lands and their human lizards".[1]

Orsinium, also called Nova Orsinium, is an Orcish city province located within Tamriel. While technically being under the sovereignty of the Empire, Orsinium has in the past not been readily accepted by the other provinces of Tamriel. However, in 3E 399, Emperor Uriel Septim VII sought to improve relationships between the Empire and Orsinium through diplomacy, increased trade, and confederacy. Orsinium was located inside the Breton province of High Rock in the west of Tamriel, and, as such, Orcs co-inhabited the region alongside Bretons. Though the Orcs and the Bretons could not get along and some time in the early 4th Era Orsinium was once again sacked. (The exact date or by whom it was sacked is unknown) Like before it was rebuilt, but this time not in the Wrothgarian mountains like the two previous incarnations of the Orc kingdom. The new Orsinium was built in the Western Reach mountains in between Skyrimand Hammerfell. [1]

High Rock is a western region of the Empire of Tamriel. It borders Hammerfell to the south-east and Skyrim to the north-east. It is mainly populated by Bretons. High Rock and the Summerset Isles are the only provinces of Tamriel that do not share a land-border with Cyrodiil. This region is known for its many small villages and towns and for the many grim fortifications that dot the hills and crags around them. In the past, these castles were the domains of many petty kings and lords that ruled the massive patchwork of small nations that used to make up High Rock.

Summerset Isles is the traditional home of the Altmer, or High Elves, and the possible first landing place of the Merarriving from their ancient homeland. The Altmeri peoples are directly bred from the Aldmeri peoples before they died off. The Altmer of the lands have allowed little in the way of exploration of their own, beyond the capital of Alinor by Ambassadors of the Second Empire of Cyrodiil. Recently, travel into the Isles has been more frequent, as Tiber Septim, using the Numidium, forced it into the Third Empire, but most of the Isle is still unknown. It is also noted that daedra worship in the Summerset Isle is quite prevalent.

Morrowind, formerly known as Resdayn and sometimes called Dunmereth, is a province in the northeastern corner of Tamriel. It is divided into two main parts: the mainland of the same name, and the island of Vvardenfell, which are separated by the Inner Sea.

"Elsweyr is an arid land of deserts and rocky canyons, where the sun shines warmly, always."

―Ri'Saad[src]

Elsweyr (commonly pronounced "Else-where") is a region of the continent of Tamriel. It is home to the Khajiit. the province is separated into two nations, both of which are client states of the Aldmeri Dominion. Anequina to the North incorporates a desert like badlands fairly similar to that of Hammerfell, whilst to the South lies Pelletine, its geography consisting of a variety of dense jungles and woodland comparable to that of Valenwood. The province is bordered by Valenwood to the west, Cyrodiil to the north and east and Black Marsh to the east, across the Topal Sea.

Hammerfell is a massive region, covered by vast mountain ranges, grasslands, and deserts. It is bordered by High Rock, Skyrim, and Cyrodiil. The desolate Alik'r Desert is one of Hammerfell's most well-known regions, taking up a large fraction of the province.

Hammerfell is especially notable for being the home of the Redguards, a race of men known for being cunning warriors and skilled swordsmen. Though many skirmishes followed upon the invasion of Yokuda, the land remained Redguard territory.

Valenwood is one of the smaller provinces of Tamriel, with an area of roughly 61,300 sq. miles and has a largely uninhabited forest wilderness. The coasts of Valenwood are dominated by mangrove swamps and sub-tropical rain forests, while heavy rainfalls nurture the temperate inland rain forests. The Bosmer live in clanhouses at sites scattered along the coast and through the interior, connected only by undeveloped foot trails. The few Imperial roads traverse vast dense woodlands, studded with tiny, widely separated settlements, and carry little trade or traffic of any kind[1]. Furthermore, the nation is home to giant, migratory trees, such as Falinesti, that house their cities.
