Sixteen.
There were sixteen left.
Five above, two behind, nine below.
And in all, there were still sixteen.
I take a step, a menacing step, a step echoing in the darkness. The pure black void, the nothingness.
I turn my head, and spy, with an all-seeing eye, another one.
Fifteen.
There remains only fifteen.
I walk slowly down a hall, and call out.
Where are they?
Five above, one ahead, nine below.
I look to another, and motion upwards.
They comply, beginning the search above.
Leaving one to their uncertainty, I begin the hunt below.
Twelve left. Four far above, eight ahead.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are!" My voice echoes along the maze of empty corridors.
Step. Step. Step. Step. Turn.
Step. Step. Step. Look. There's another one.
They bolt, seeing me turn to them. I begin the chase.
Step step step step step! I reach further, and graze their shoulder.
They fall, instantly defeated.
Eleven.
After a moment, they get up, and follow my lead to the open void. They begin their own search, all over again.
Ten.
Eight.
Four.
Two.
One.
We converge, and plan our final search.
This last one is good at hiding.
But we are sure that we are better at finding.
I watch as our platoon of undead soldiers scour the land for the final one.
A blinding light announces its presence from beyond the horizon.
Time is running thin.
Step. Step. Step. Leap.
I reach up and climb upon that which hasn't been searched; far above.
I look down upon the void, down onto the twilit darkness.
I turn around, and spy the last one.
The last one that remains.
I bolt, knowing time is of the essence.
They don't see me yet.
I reach, and shout, "I've got you!"
They turn around, not ready to face their untimely end.
I reach out and graze their shoulder.
"And that's how I beat the Highschoolers at manhunt! And telling it that way, it almost sounds like some cheesy horror story from the villain's perspective."
