Traditional Silent Snow

Well I finally got around to colouring this piece over Christmas so thought I would throw it up here.


This is my character Silent Snow for WLFSamurai's Exalted game Tumultuous Tides.


Its been years since I have used copic markers to colour so that was... fun, and as such trying to colour Moonsilver and Soulsteal is really annoying (the chain she is wearing as a belt is supposed to be Soulsteal but my limited colours just means its random dark colour). Still I am rather happy with it so hope you guys like. Do you keep a sketchbook online? I have been meaning to do so myself, but only have the portfolio up at the moment.

Well I am half trying a One year challenge type thing where I try to draw at least one thing a day. Though mostly they are ending up being sketches and then uploaded via phone camera rather then scanner. That be over at my tumblr: http://kasheal.tumblr.com/

I rather like your linework. I would love to give a drawing challenge like that a go, but I seem to fall into this strange trap that means if I *have* to draw every day, then I am less likely to.


...though having said that I do pretty much draw every day...

Yeah I am just barely keeping up with it and its still the first two weeks, plus I am at work for 12 hours Monday so there is a good chance I will miss that one. But still can't hurt to try.


Is there a link to this portfolio you mentioned? You be nice to see some of your art if you don't mind of course.

I'm a traditional artist, mostly. The first ten are photo collages from the same series, The Spaceman is mixed media collage...lost of stuff in there. Then pen and ink, acrylic paint on paper, more mixed media, pen and ink again, acrylic ink on paper, paper collage, charcoal, and three linocuts.

Some very nice pieces there Alexandra. I really like the lino pieces especially 'Tadhg', I always enjoy strong contrasts. I actually do Lino cuts myself for my professional work, I find it a really relaxing medium to work with, well until you have to actually print it then it can drive me mad. For the non lino piece my favourit is 'Illumination' though I lack the ability to say why though I believe it has a lot to do with the composition, I was never good at the art history side of my studies =P

I love feedback about the series of ten; I find it interesting which pieces people like the best. My favourites are Project Blue Beam, Lunar Dreams and Otherworldly Architects.


I really need to get back to lino cutting sometime soon; it's been a couple of years :/


Also, about today's Tumblr piece; is it my imagination, or is there a reference to Legend of the Five Rings in there? I'm getting a chibi Kami feeling off the two of them.

Nice to know someone is looking at the Tumblr ^^ It must just be coincidence, my knowledge of LotFR is rather limited to two brief table top sessions. Its a picture of my character Kiara (the one with wings) and Snake Obsidens character Llyod (floating about on his cloud) from WLFsamurais Exalted game 'Golden Devils'. They randomly encountered each other while flying one day hence Kiara's expression. All I had for Lloyd was a three sentence discription so he probably looks nothing like Snake thinks, plus its hard to show lanky and wibbly wobbly in sitting chibi form.


It was the same with me and lino. I used it a bit during my foundation year then forgot about it. Then in my last year of Uni my dissertation was on Ukiyo-e and its influence on modern eastern and western art so my tutor suggested I did some print work for one of my projects, and thanks to that suggestion I have actually started to make a little (very little) money off my art.

Ok. I thought they might be an interpretation of Togashi and Akodo, the Dragon and Lion founders, respectively. I think you may enjoy L5R lore, and the artwork of the newest edition especially is great.


What is your usual subject matter? Mine has recently turned into self-portraits, though I suspect that's partly to do with coursework. But yes...lots of portraits. I should have an image dump next week when I get things scanned from my most recent show.

It depends. For my lino work it is mostly animals or landscapes (thankfully I grew up in a small town close to the country side so I have always had lots of reference for such things) though shamefully that is mostly because they are what sell.


However there has been a Victor Von Doom piece (from Marvel comics), also I have just reread 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss which I highly recommend and am trying to come up with a piece based off of that as it will give me an excuse to use a bit of my red ink. I may upload some later, just always been a bit more shy when it comes to actual commercial pieces (which is a really stupid way to be)


When I am drawing for myself its mainly my own characters or other characters from games I am in. Plus a comic idea that will never get done but is a fun way to procrastinate.

I liked that soda one. Kinda how I feel in the dead of night sometimes.


I do quite a bit of pen and ink; I'm really fond of nice lines, and stippling. But at the moment, it's a *lot* of photo collage, with watercolour used to make the textured backgrounds. I ended up with a folder packed full of them after my Illustration elective...

It is on the tumblr now so at least it is still about somewhere. Hope to have another image up before I sleep tonight but there is probably only a 50/50 chance if I am honest. Work has been annoying and made me lazy.


What level are you currently studying at then. Electives make me think of Uni but it may be a little different over there?

Third level. We have universities and institutes of technology here; both of which have courses for about three or four years. Pretty much both of them get referred to as "college", and both have slightly different approaches to education. Courses that are more hands-on generally happen in ITs; art, multimedia, computer science, architecture, biomedical and some other sciences. Universities have the arts and humanities, sciences, medicine...there are some crossover in courses but they're taught differently.


My course is Visual Communication, incorporating fine art, graphic design, photography, packaging design, typography, and elements of multimedia. It's really interesting, but super stressful...

Man that does sound like a lot of work. I just went with plain old illustration were everything was nice and simple.


Thanks very much WlfS. Well I never thought I would hear her being called a balancing factor, she is the one that charged undead in DBT with a realm legion watching after all =P And a thank you to yourself for running the game been good fun so far along with Golden Devils.

Now that is a grand compliment.


I am more then happy to take on a commission. Of course there is only so many things I am decent enough at drawing to be good enough for commission work so what kind of thing were you thinking and I will let you know if it is within my capabilities?


Also I am currently colouring one of my pieces in my three different ways (pencil colours, digital and markers) so people will be able to see the difference. Which could come in handy to give you more of an idea rather then just from one of my pics.

Well I randomly decided to draw Frixz's character Rori Hutchins. She is meant to be paler (forgot when I started colouring) and it might be obvious I haven't drawn mohawks before. There are also probably a hell of a lot of other things not right but what the hey.
