At the end of the year 3487 an exploration ship is send out into outer space by the Solar Empire, in an attempt to find new, inhabitable planets. Every four months they return home to update their findings, but as it is a very dangerous and hostile environment, not many ships return. The crew of course makes or breaks the mission, and they grow together tightly and prosper, or divide and perish.
Having successfully done two rounds of this (eight months in total of exploration) the crew is invited to a prestigious university to be awarded a medal for courage, and to give a talk on space exploration to bright new students. However during this gathering a terrorist group against robots and aliens, The Illuminated Rebellion, sets of a bomb. This kills half the crew, leaving nearly none unscathed, and in the end means the death of nearly 50 people, and wounds another 300.
In the aftermath it is found that the INANES IR targeted, the lieutenant of the Lullaby, is actually sentient. The military does not like this idea, as they have been using INANES as replacements for soldiers, and they aren't supposed to be considered 'alive'. However he, and several remaining crewmembers escape towards the counter-rebellion against IR, Free For All. None of them coming out unscathed, and their former glory reduced to zero, they have to build up a new crew, with new members and in a vastly different environment.
You play as either an original member if you were in Transsolar, or an entirely new member that was hired from the rebellion fighting for tolerance and rights for everyone.
