[Shifting Sands] Shade

Coyotekin

Catalytic Diplomat
History:

Not much is known about Shade's history, and if that was originally his name or not. He tends not to talk much about his years before joining the military. He joined the Lookshy military, as a native Lookshayan no less, specializing in recon, scouting, and, sometimes, assassination. He was pretty good at it too. So much so that he did the job for about 10 years, but eventually grew tired of it feeling that people started to seem so impartial to other peoples' suffering. He was tired of mission after mission outside of the city and abroad and seeing so many villages and towns decimated. And each time a small Lookshayan unit could've defended the people, or at least trained them on how to defend themselves the brass would avert their eyes as if everything was ok.

Shade finally had enough of it all, leaving as a well-respected and decorated mortal soldier. The brass wasn't too happy, but they couldn't hold it against the man as Shade had done his time and left without giving the leadership any need for concern. He spent the next two years wandering the South, further and further, wherever his feet took him. He remained always on the lookout for more places where someone like him could make a difference. Much of it was keeping the piece from a distance. A few might've suspected the strangers involvement, but nobody knew for sure, as it would all just be rumor. What people did know was that suddenly they would find a body with a note attached simply stating "Threat eliminated".

Exaltation:

It was while he was wandering along the plains that everything went wrong. The nearby village he had been watching over for the past week was suddenly attacked by an onslaught of bandits and marauders, screaming for blood for the ones that Shade had killed. The villagers hardly had a chance being so confused as to why the bandits were so enraged. They had no knowledge of what happened, and no involvement. The bandits didn't care, they wanted blood and more to avenge their fallen brothers and sisters.

Shade rushed in, he was out of ammo, after taking out other enemies previously, and the only thing nearby was a scythe used in the fields. Shade knew he was greatly outnumbered, but he couldn't leave the villagers to die, not when it was his fault. It was as he took that stand, ready to face the odds against him that his brow glowed with the light of the sun.

The villagers still revere the man that saved him, knowing he was blessed by the Unconquered Sun, and was ready to sacrifice himself for them. The Cult of the Illuminated took him in after hearing about him from the local villagers. The Cult understand why Shade chose the Scythe, his own strip of cloth, to remind him of what he was fighting for, the weapon to let him never forget how strength can come from even the most uncommon places. In addition the Cult couldn't ignore Shade's amazing skill with his specially-crafted flamewand that spat pieces of metal or stone out of its barrel. In fact Shade was greatly respected, and feared, with his "rifle" for he could take out a target with a single shot from several hundred yards away.

His rifle is an exceptional piece of work, made of a composite of Magical Materials, with a socket seting for a Hearthstone. A hearthstone he was given as a gift from one of the few Solar Manses that they Cult owned. The rifle was named Final Thought, reminiscent of the last thing anyone knew once Shade targeted them. He was also given an Orichalcum Grand Grimscythe, named Last Chance, to remind him of what he is fighting for. Finally, his original, dog-eared manual of the 1000 Correct Actions of the Upright Soldier was enchanted by Sorcery using the Water element so that it would survive Shade's travels, no matter where he might go.<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2012_07/Shade_pdf.058a1856faad322c41730e0d26c3c73c" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="23691" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2012_07/Shade_pdf.058a1856faad322c41730e0d26c3c73c" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>
