If a bodyguard wishes to search a premises or scout a location for where security would be most compromised or need more work, would the best ability to cover this be Investigation or Larceny?

Cheers,

Investigation covers knowledge of investigative techniques. You want the Ability that governs knowledge of criminal methods: larceny. If you're meaning security as in "keeping people out". If you mean "protecting VIPs" then probably Melee, Archery, or something.

To clarify;

Looking at a window and noticing that it'd be really easy to jimmy is covered by larceny.

Looking at a window and noticing that it has been jimmied is covered by investigation.

If you're trying to improve security you will most likely be doing the first so that you don't end up having to do the second.

But the character wouldn't really know much about the criminal lifestyle, but know how to protect people by scouting the location.

This is why I was unsure if Larceny would cover this.

Knowing your opponents means you have knowledge of their methods and technqiues.  A good thief should have some knowledge of Bureacracy on the same note, just in case...

While it can be argued that cops and criminals aren't all that dissimilar, a good cop has a fair idea about how criminals operate, even if he isn't dirty.  Same with good security.

Good point.

All I can say is this... if you're REALLY trained or experienced as a security guard, you'll know all the ins and outs of breaking into places you were trained or assigned to...

You know how the security system works... generally...  :twisted:

Indeed, many "security experts" make a living by breaking into facilities and computer systems by request of the owners.

The best way to see if your system is secure is to pay someone who knows what they're doing to try to get in.
