Background-
Sam doesn't ever really talk about it but he comes from a pretty stereotypical broken home. He grew up straddling the line between working class and poor. His father is a dirtbag who works as a contractor and his mother works in as a secretary at some company Sam never bothered to learn the name of. It was a big family and as the middle of five children, Sam often slipped between the cracks. But his childhood was more or less okay. He did normal kid stuff like running around breaking things and playing in dirt. Him and his siblings were all really close- he has two older brothers, Caleb (23) and Will (20), and two younger sisters, Vanessa (13) and Rosie (16). Sam never really realized they were poor since his mother did her best to hide that from her children. Things changed when their dad left. He divorced Sam's mother shortly after Vanessa was born, when Sam was five. All of the sudden they went from getting by to struggling as his mother tried to raise five children on her own while working full time. This is when Sam started acting out- he didn't really see the point in trying hard in school if no one was telling him to and he was sent home with a note more often than not. But with everything else his mom had going on there wasn't much she could do to control Sam.
He was twelve when he tried drugs for the first time. In middle school he started hanging out with some older kids who introduced him to things like vandalism, shoplifting, and weed. Since that first time he can count on one hand the number of days he's spent completely sober. By high school he'd escalated to slightly harder things like acid, shrooms, the occasional pill, and thanks to an ADHD diagnosis, he has easy access to adderall that he habitually abuses. He spends most of his time skating around, getting fucked up, and making art and movies. Those are about the only things he cares about at this point- he has dreams of being a screenwriter/cinematographer and has already made dozens of short films. You won't ever hear him admit it but he has a dream of going to film school at NYU. It's not likely though- he's barely passing. Despite being at least somewhat intelligent, he just doesn't care enough to try any harder than what's necessary to graduate.
While he's viewed as a stereotypical stoner on the outside, he has a bit of a short temper and a deep seated bitterness at his lot in life. After leaving his family, his father is a lot more well off than before and on the rare occasion they see him Sam is disgusted by his lavish lifestyle. As a result he's often at odds with the more well-off kids at his school and it's not rare to see him mocking them either to their faces or behind their backs. But his behavior is at least somewhat tolerated since he's one of the school's main suppliers of illicit substances. He's at every party that's at least halfway decent, getting trashed and selling baggies full of whatever people want. In the past year his use has escalated and he's started dabbling in more dangerous drugs but he's sure he has it under control.
How You Got Detention-
To be honest Sam is in here a lot. This time it was for a combination of skipping class and vandalism. He skipped out on Stats for the fourth time in a row and they found him in one of the bathrooms, covering the stall doors in elaborate graffiti. In his defense he was pretty fucked up at the time.
