RWBY: Fire and Ice

Reaper Six

Your friendly, neighborhood soldier of fortune
Two students, one legendary academy. Two opposites, one goal. What happens when fire and ice meet?

Michael Rakken reclined in his chair, looking out the window of the airship as it began to descend. He enjoyed flying, and had taken courses instructing him on how to fly these types of aircraft. Although, he preferred his boots on the ground to fight. He looked around the cabin, at all the other students, all going to Beacon for the same purpose. He'd get to know a few of them, when the time came, but now he relaxed.

He reached into a pocket of his jacket, and fished around until he found and opened a bag of jerky. That was his addiction. It helped him think. He looked out the window at the Emerald Forest, and wondered what adventures lay ahead.

Talyn's multicoloured eyes scanned across the view, her hood pulled up over her head. Uhg. My ears are sore. She thought, though thankful her hood didn't give away that she was a Faunus. At least the view was nice. The airship was pretty cool too, but Talyn had never really been one to notice that kind of thing. She stepped back from the window and sat down again, her eyes slipping over various people that walked around.

The smell of something, jerky Talyn recognized, wafted across her sensitive nose. Shaking her head at the scent, she turned her head to look out the window again, waiting for the airship to land.

As the descent slowed, Michael grabbed two duffle bags containing clothes and stuff, respectively, and slung a long bag containing his rifle and the things he needed for it over his back. He preferred to remain anonymous, so as the airship landed, he filed out in the middle of the group. As he reached the outside, he looked up and took a breath of fresh air. Michael reached into a breast pocket and pulled out his aviators, donning them before making his way towards the academy.

Talyn stood, grabbing her own bag and making her way through the crowds as well. She made sure to watch where she was going, so as not to bump into anyone or attract attention. God, she hated attention. Even if she had her hood up and her tail hidden, it still felt like people knew and would judge her.

Moving quickly and silently through the crowds, she paused once to look up at the full view of the Academy, then continued on, following the mass of new students as they made their way to where Talyn assumed the headmaster would address them.

The orientation lecture was supposed to take place in a few minutes, he heard. In the meantime, the headmasters assistant, a woman named Gylnda Goodwitch, would take their bags. Michael relieved himself of them at the drop off area, and moved away.

He moved to a spot near the doors in, where he promptly found a piece of wall and leaned on it, popping a piece of beef jerky into his mouth while he observed the rest of the group from behind his shades. Across the courtyard, he heard a small explosion, but it turned out to be just some girl messing with Dust.

Talyn's ears twitched, and she turned to see some girl in all white yelling at another girl in red. She raised an eyebrow, but quickly narrowed her eyes at the sight of a familiar bow headed, black-haired girl. If it isn't Blake. Talyn thought. They walked right past each other, but not before making eye-contact. By the look Blake gave her, it was obvious she recognized Talyn, but said nothing. I see I wasn't the only one to leave. She thought, sighing and moving close towards the doors.

(I figured I'd add that interaction in there. Just thought Talyn would notice Blake 'cause of the explosion ^.^)

Michael covertly observed, as well as watching the other initiates. He noticed a girl moving towards the doors, which were open, but few had entered. He realized he possibly head inside as well. Five minutes early. He glanced at the others, before following the hooded girl inside. Once there, he broke off, and found a pillar to lean on looking toward the stage. Few other had filed in to the darkened room, but he didn't really mind.

(Makes sense)

Talyn walked through the doors, stopping to look around the rood once before going to lean against a wall near the pillars, and pulled something shiny out of a pocket. It was a few pieces of metal, some hanging loose, some tightly woven into the tangle of metal. The goal was to get all the pieces undone, and Talyn had been working on it for the last few days. It was what she did to pass the time these days.

She fiddled with the pieces, the metal making surprisingly little sound, and waited for the lecture to begin.

Checking his watch, Michael looked around again, removing his sunglasses and tucking them back. More students began to file in, and after they were, they listened to a short, cryptic spiel from Ozpin, the headmaster. Once it was done, he picked his way out with the crowd, accidentally bumping shoulders with the hooded girl from before. "Sorry," he said quickly, looking at her.

"Huh. 'Cause that made all the sense in the world." Talyn muttered after Professor Ozpin's speech. She got up and made her way towards to doors, but not before bumping into someone. "Sorry." The boy said, as Talyn turned to look at him. "Uh, no problem. I wasn't paying attention anyway." She managed to say, putting the tangle of metal back into a seemingly non-existent pocket.

Michael drew away after this, after securing his weapon in a rocket propelled locker, he found a bench, kicked back, and stared at the sky. Tomorrow would be their first exercise, and then he'd be partnered with someone for the next four years.

Sliding his sunglasses on, he wondered who it might be out of the group. There was that tall blonde... But she had her group of friends, and he wasn't a part of it. So that was unlikely. He just had to boil down and accept the fact that the chips would fall, and he would hope to position himself the best he could.

The next morning, all first year students stood atop the cliff, listening to Professor Ozpin's quick explanation. They were to go fetch a relic, and return to the cliffs without dying. Talyn's eyes shifted to the launch-pads below her, and took a slow breath before taking out her weapon and readying herself. The boy she'd bumped into yesterday was beside her on the next metal pad.

An uncertain sounding blond boy was asking questions, even though Ozpin clearly moved on. He was asking about a landing strategy. What strategy? From what Talyn had gathered, it was more of a "Make it to the ground without dying" strategy. Ah well. Poor guy probably wouldn't last long in a fight. Hopefully, she wouldn't get paired with him.

That next morning, he had gone out to the pads early. His weapon slung, he plotted out his own landing strategy. He knew he'd have to wait until he got closer, but he could skip off the trees.

His half cooked strategy formulated, Michael slipped on his aviators and waited, bracing off the platform. As people started launching, he was letting his mind idle, getting into a combat mindset.

The hooded girl launched. Then he did, angling in the air towards the trees. In his perepherial vision, he saw the red girl who exploded yesterday hit... A Nevermore. Focusing, he waited, and kicked off some trees until his velocity had slowed to the point of a decent landing. Michael hit the forest floor, rolling to a stop.

Talyn heard the click of the launchpad and tensed herself. In seconds she was in the air. Her eyes widened as she felt her hood start to slip down. Talyn grabbed it with her free hand, and pulled herself into a ball so she dropped like a stone into the forest. As soon as she was below the trees she let go of her hood -which immediately slipped down- broke a few branches, hit the ground with a painful thud, and rolled to a stop.

With a slightly pained sigh, Talyn stood up and pulled her hood back on, cracking her neck before advancing into the forest with her sword at her side.

Michael drew his rifle and cycled it, confirming that he had it loaded. With that, he set off, moving efficiently through the trees and bush. He heard a javelin whistle overhead, and a halfhearted "thanks" upon the thunk of impact. Paying no mind to this, Michael moved off, sticking to trees and cover the best he could.

About five minutes after landing, he saw some brush move. Instinctively, he brought his rifle up and trained it on that target. He scarcely breathed as he watched the site of movement.

Talyn walked through the forests, calmly roving her eyes around the scenery. She stopped dead at the sound of a growl behind her, and slowly turned around. "Ah. Hey." She said, giving the Ursa a single wave and a before bolting off in the opposite direction.

Stumbling through the bushes, she slid to a stop in front of… The same guy. The dude she bumped into yesterday. Her eyes slowly lifted from the ground and up to his own, and then blinked. "Uh, nice gun. You might want to aim a little more to the left though." Talyn managed to say, just as the Ursa came roaring out of the bushes.

His finger pressed against the trigger until he saw the humanoid form. Then he saw the Ursa. He shifted left, tracking the monster. "I see you brought friends," he muttered, firing. The rounds streaked out, blue tracers cutting through the air, with small blue explosions on the Ursas skin at the impact points.

He snapped off ten rounds quickly, before the clip pinged empty. Wasting no time, Michael flicked the safety to the sword position and pulled the trigger, the Decimator reconfiguring into a sword. The Ursa charged him, and Michael backhanded the sword across its flank as he rolled away from the charge.

Talyn rolled her eyes at him and jumped, landing on the Ursa's back as he fired. The blade sunk into the Ursa's back, and it roared and threw her off. She flipped in the air and landed a few feet away, clicking her sword into gun form and firing a few bolts at the creature, the arrow-like projectiles exploded with fire on impact.

The air was filled with red and blue, and Talyn clicked her weapon back into sword form to block the Ursa's clawed paw from hitting her. She nodded for the boy to attack while the creature's attention was on trying to eat her.

As soon as it turned its back to him, Michael broke into a sprint and jumped onto the creatures back, plunging his blade near where she had made a rent. Michael twisted the blade violently, and as the creature reacted, trying to fling him off, he jumped back. Michael reached into a pocket and withdrew a new clip, reconfiguring his weapon, he jacked it in, and fired into the hole in the Ursa's back.

Michael landed and rolled back, "that all you got? Come on!" he shouted at the Ursa, trying to get it to face him so that the girl could attack its weakness.

Talyn smirked and jumped, kicking off a tree so she could get higher, clicking her weapon into gun form and shooting the Ursa's wound, before clicking her weapon into sword form and slamming it into the wound as well. She jerked it to the side, cutting deeper into the Ursa. The creature roared, collapsing to the ground, but not before it reached around with a paw and smacked Talyn off it's back. She hit a nearby tree with a thud and fell to the forest floor.

Michael watched, smiling slightly at the plan working. Once she got knocked off, Michael stepped over to her, weapon trained on the prone Ursa. After he was sure it was dead, he crouched by his new partner.

"Nice work. You okay?" he asked, holding out a hand to help her up.

Talyn groaned and grabbed his hand, pulling herself to her feet. "Thanks. You're not to bad in a fight yourself." She managed, the looked at the dead Ursa. Cracking her neck, she turned in the direction she'd been going before the Ursa had attacked. Pointing a thumb in that direction, she turned back to the guy. "Shall we?" Talyn blinked, then added: "Oh, I'm Talyn, by the way."

He offered a small smile as he pulled her up, "that's why I'm here." After she was up, Michael slid a fresh clip into his rifle, cycling the bolt and pointing at the ground in front of him. "That's the way we need to go," he said, before starting off. "Michael Rakken," he replied to her. "Nice to meet you, Talyn."
