Quote: “Don't mind me. I'm just an unassuming archaeologist, a man who has a tendency to get lost in his books.”

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Age: 26

Personality: Usually a very quiet and subdued person. He does not like to overtly express what he is feeling and he makes an effort to hide his vulnerabilities. He tends to speak only when spoken to or only when he feels he has something to gain from or something important to add to a conversation.

Somewhat paranoid, he takes pains to remain inconspicuous and avoid the notice of others when possible, his body language often seeming to convey his desire to hide in plain sight (i.e., slouches to make himself appear small and nonthreatening; naturally positioning himself in corners away from others or near exits for quick escape; etc.).

He is a scholar at heart; he loves to learn new things and gather information about technology, people, races, politics, magic, gods, or anything. He often likes to read a book (or appear to read a book) when out in the open or in the presence of others.

He is very calculating; he survives by making himself useful to those more powerful than he is, or by playing his foes against one another. As such, he is always studying others, whether they realize it or not, making note of desires, strengths, weaknesses, and character flaws that he may be able to use to his advantage later on.

He is more of a planner than a fighter; he does not like hand to hand combat and will not engage in it unless he is forced to do so in order to save his life.

Faction: Currently hired by The People's Republic of Tiffrel to gather intel on other political factions as well as information about the needle everyone is currently interested in. He has orders to secure the needle for the Republic if possible or destroy it if it appears one of the Republic's enemies is going to get their hands on it.

Profession: Spy, Mercenary, Saboteur

Equipment:

Cloaking Device: A small device easily stored in one's pocket. This handy object absorbs photons when active, preventing light from giving away the user's location. In turn, it analyzes the user's current surroundings and the positions of any onlookers to project an image to the eye of whatever the viewer would see if the user's position were occupied by empty space. The effect is that the user is invisible to onlookers. Others can still hear the user or feel him or her if touched. The user of the device cannot move from the position he or she was in when it was activated or the effect will disappear; furthermore, the device takes five minutes to achieve the full invisibility effect and can only last for 30 minutes of continuous use before it must be recharged.

Tool bag: On the surface, contains archeological tools for excavation and analysis as well as several books that Roland is currently reading. Also contains food rations and various emergency first aid materials. Beneath all this, there is a hidden compartment in the bag containing masks, make-up, and outfits for disguises that Roland can make use of when necessary. The bag hangs at his hip via a strap diagonally across his chest and over his opposite shoulder, allowing him to carry it and keep his hands free.

Memory implant: A camera implanted into the eye. Constantly recording everything the user sees. Allows near-instantaneous recall of anything the user has read, seen, or experienced at any time in his or her life since receiving the implant.

Taser: Used for basic self-defense. Will use a bolt of electricity to incapacitate victims for several moments, allowing the user to escape or attack while they are stunned, but will do no lasting damage. Nonlethal, with a range of about 30 feet, it requires no ammo, just sufficient time to recharge after several uses. Will recharge itself automatically when not being used by absorbing ions from the surrounding environment. At full charge, it can fire about 10 times in quick succession before it will need to recharge itself.

Remote Explosives: User can set charges ahead of time and then push a button to set them off from any location within ten miles. After explosion, the charges can be reused if not irreparably damaged by the surrounding environment in the blast. The charges are fairly small and easy to hide, but there is always the danger that someone can find and move them or disarm them without the user's knowledge before he or she tries to set them off. Roland currently has five explosive charges in his possession that he can set to go off and one remote detonator in his possession at all times.

Concealable knives: eight small, basic throwing knives of steel that are kept on him at all times for emergencies. Four are strapped to his forearms and his upper arms underneath long sleeves (these are easily detached so that a knife can appear in his hand with a roll of his wrist or shoulder very quickly when necessary); one on each of this thighs beneath his pants, and two are concealed in covert pockets within his boots. Additionally, he has one large hunting knife kept in visible sight on his belt at all times that he uses on most occasions to make others think that it is the only sharp object on his person.

Patron God: He is Barren and thus has no strong, overt religious affiliation; however, he is sympathetic to Sillis, for his aspects of foresight and calculation, as well as to Mizen for the aspect of illusion and Friest for the aspect of concealment. He does not worship these gods, but he does identify with the aforementioned aspects of each.

Skills:

Highly analytical: He is at his best when gathering and interpreting knowledge and information. Additionally, while he does not have any remarkable prowess as a fighter, he has skill as a strategist: he is good at devising plans of attack on the fly based on terrain, allies, and current circumstances.

Master of Disguise: One of his most helpful skills as a spy. A great actor, he is good at impersonating others when necessary. He is also good at finding hiding places and escape routes, being inconspicuous, and generally being a shifty character.

Interpersonal skills: While not generally very talkative and generally not very trustful, he is good at getting on peoples' good sides and creating alliances when the situation calls for it. He is also fairly good at manipulating others to his own ends when possible.

Nimble: He isn't very strong and he doesn't know any martial arts, but he's fast and has good reflexes, helpful when he needs to dodge or run quickly. He has great sleight of hand abilities as well.

Flaws:

Poor combat skills: He has no magical ability and very little skill in hand to hand combat. If forced into a direct fight, he can use his taser and/or his concealed knives to try and take foes by surprise; if these fail, he is in deep trouble. He tends to try and avoid direct fighting whenever possible for this reason.

Limited by his technology: A lot of his skills come from his use of tech. If others figure out how to get around it or how to use it against him, there isn't much that he can do. As a result, he is very close-mouthed about exactly how his toys work, what they can do, and how many he has; the less information others have about his capabilities, the safer he will be.

Cold demeanor: He tends to be quiet, blunt, and intellectual about things. This may tend to make him seem cold, uncaring, and callous to others on first impression. Additionally, while he's good at making friends and making alliances when needed, he has difficulty really trusting anyone and tends to hold others at arms length, never really allowing them to get close. This can make him lonely at times.

Tends to get carried away: While usually very aware of his surroundings, he is sometimes easily distracted by new and interesting information, a good book, or engaging conversation.

History: He was born to a very poor family in a barren region of space. In an attempt to find a better life for themselves, his parents decided to stow away on an Elven merchant ship bound for Isyn when he was very young. Once safely there, his father attempted to join the religion of Sillis to fit in and his mother Mizen, but they were always looked down upon as outsiders wherever they went. His father was able to provide for his family by doing odd jobs for various political factions.

In his teenage years, however, his father became a victim of the hostilities between these factions and was killed. His mother took ill soon afterward and was unable to provide for herself or her son. Roland was forced to pick up where his father left off, spending his adolescence acting as an agent for whatever political faction wanted to hire him in order to provide for his ailing mother. He learned from his father's mistakes and made sure his true identity and appearance were always unknown to others. He took the name “Fireman” as a spy and made sure there was a consistent way to contact him for those who knew of him, but he never appeared in person to take jobs or payment and his employers never saw his true face or knew his true name. At 18, his mother finally passed away and by this time, Roland's skill as a spy had become well-developed.

As the Fireman's skill as a saboteur became more renowned by the governing bodies of the various factions, he was able to take on more and more lucrative jobs and, thus, he was able to purchase and develop more potent and expensive equipment for himself, further enhancing his capabilities. He continued to develop contacts among the followers of all the major gods of Isyn as well as within the ranks of each political faction. As the factions played their games and fought their wars, Roland learned how to survive by making himself useful and profiting off of their mutual mistrust and hatred for one another.

In particular, one faction, the People's Republic of Tiffrel, hired the Fireman extensively to gain information about one faction that they could then sell to another faction in order to keep themselves useful to all, thus helping to ensure their survival. Currently, he is on a similar contract with regard to the needle. He has been hired to secure the needle for them or prevent its use by other factions as he deemed necessary, but perhaps more importantly, he is also there to gather intel on the other agents who seek it, the factions they work for, and their plans, strengths, and weaknesses. The Republic will use this information as leverage to keep themselves from being destroyed by more powerful factions.

Roland's cover story is that he is an archaeologist with no material interest in the needle at all beyond its historical and cultural importance. He is apparently there to study the underground catacombs to learn more about the civilization who left the needle and the labyrinth behind. Under no circumstances is he to allow his identity as a spy or his connection to Tiffrel become known.

Hi MagicPenguin MagicPenguin ! Your character looks good, though his technology might be a bit too strong. Invariant technology is generally weaker, a tradeoff for working across domains. Do you want to join us in Discord to discuss more? :D

Thanks for the response! I added some extra limitations to the cloaking device and replaced the disguise generator with a tool bag full of masks and disguises. I hope that helps.
