Fantasy Rise of the Rose Heiress

Prismascope

Through faith and fire, I'll be by your side.
Mikan would yawn as she had grabbed her school bag laid out by a butler that morning; She had just finished breakfast and was dressed in a basic purple and white Fuku uniform for girls that her school deemed necessary to wear. It was her first day and to be honest, she was actually excited due to being homeschooled the last few years. Her father had abandoned her in a stony mansion where a maid and butler were waiting for her. "Now, Mikan-sama. Don't forget to make at least one friend." Her butler told her and she let out a smile revealing perfectly white and straight teeth. "I will, Zero. Please don't worry about me, I'll call you to pick me up okay?" She smiled and gave a childish wave, her platinum blonde hair bouncing as she got out the mansions door and walked to her new academy. She'd looked at the ground and bit her lip in nervousness 'What if no one likes me?' She thought in doubt. She had not looked where she was going and tripped on a loose pavement tile, her bag flinging off her shoulder and falling to the ground as she landed on her hands and knees, scraping them to mere shreds. "O-ow..." She hissed slightly and got up, a few tears in her eyes as she licked the blood off her hands when noone was looking and picked her bag up.

Chirping invaded her ears, her eyelashes fluttering ever so slightly at the motion of waking up. Had she…? No, it could not be, she could swear she had been awake for a while now. Her eyes opened, her vision confirming her suspicion. A purple and white uniform, adorned with a ruffled white shirt and a pair of black dress shoes. Orpheus would continue to sing outside and light bathed the empty living room. She had fell asleep…prior to leaving for the academy, it seemed. A quick look over her pocket watch settled down her concern for a late arrival. “…Ceri!” It was Aonghus, fumbling with his tie, wide-eyed as he called out to the young witch. Ceridwen would promptly rise from the couch she had been lost in her dreams only but a moment ago, adjusting her skirt with an air of nonchalance to contrast to the one of restless surprise that her guardian had.

“Do not worry, there is still time.” Soft words, soft hands as they aided the poor man with his clothes. “Did you fell asleep? Are you tired? At what hour did you go to bed?” “Will you please calm down?” She paused, presenting him his blazer. “…I had a dream.” The man chuckled wryly when she said so, not to mock her, rather to indulge himself in a moment of leisure. “Oh, another one!” “Be serious, Aonghus. A dream of the future to come.” Those words alone prompted a change in his behaviour, one Ceridwen quickly picked up upon. “Nothing for you to fret over." She raised a hand as if to stop him from interrupting her. "I saw…a girl. She smiled, bright as the sun. She extended a hand to me.” “And…?” “And that was the end of it.” The man sighed, scratching his head. “I have told you again and again, my precognitive dreams have a will of their own.” “So it seems…. Ah, look at the time, go on, Ceri!” She seemed reluctant to end the conversation there. “We will discuss it later, I promise you, songbird. But we should make haste at once!” He trotted over to the entrance. “Just because you have a position of power in the academy, it does not mean you can do as you please!”

Her response was silent, but nevertheless it did not go unnoticed. Shaking her head in dismay at his jokes was something more of a habit by now. Of course, it was Aonghus’s own way of dispersing the tension. He knew how frustrating these dreams were to Ceridwen, as the sole kind that she could not hope to decipher so easily. Picking up her bag, she headed after her guardian. “Have a good day at work.” She handed him his own briefcase. “Thank you, dearie.” With a darling smile, Aonghus tousled her hair affectionately before opening the door. She declined a ride to the academy, as she had grown fond of the alternative of walking to the institution on her own. On the way, however, she could come to notice a difference in the pattern to it. Perhaps a classmate approaching her to ask for something regarding classes, perhaps an underclassman hoping to strike a conversation with her with a shy smile. Today, it was the fall of a student she could not quite recognize at first. “…Are you quite alright?” She picked up the pace to match that of the stranger, tilting her head ever so slightly as to emote concern. She thought of it as a polite gesture, impulsive if she were to say so.

She lifted her head up and eyed the girl, her blue eyes widen and she started to stammer. "u-uhm, y-yes! D-Do you go to school here?" She mentioned to the building in front of them, her head tilted to the side making her look quite cute and innocent.

...Well, I am wearing the uniform at the moment, am I not? Ceridwen would repress such a thought to be voiced on a whim. Perhaps she was yet suffering the consequences of the fall. Or perhaps it was her way of acting upon a sense of distress at being approached. A vacant expression would be the one Ceridwen wore at all times, one she could not escape from, as smiling or other variations of a single expression she could not quite grasp within her own ability. But her words were kind and her gestures soft, in contrast to a cold, aloof indifference she could give away out of her own accord. "I do, yes." She placed a hand on her chin, as if in thought. "I cannot recall your name, my apologies." Given her position, she would take upon herself to remember the names and faces of every student she would come across. How very vexing... Unless.... "Could you perhaps be a new student arriving today?" She had heard of one such thing a few days prior to this encounter.

She'd nod and give a smile, holding her hand out causing a black bracelet with a silver rose on it to sparkle. "Yup, I'm Mikan. It's nice to meet you."

A lake.

A dark, misty lake.

The maiden stood on the shore of the lake. She turn her head around, gazing at the trees, the water. Then she moved silently, wet grass brushed against her naked feet.

Then through the white mist, the still water, the gentle breeze, a faint voice called out.

"Gwenevere."

The maiden's lips pulled into a grin...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Her eyes opened to see her father gently shaking her shoulder. "Forgive me, Gwen. But you need to wake up."

Gwenevere smirked. She stared into her father's hollow eyes, and sat up. Her wavy dark hair fell messily on her shoulder.

"Thank you father."

Her father stepped aside as she exit the room on the left and entered her dressing room. A few clean uniform rested on the hanger, and she changed into them and tossed the dark purple sleeping gown aside.

"Gwennevere."

She blinked as she remembered the voice from her dream.

"Soon. Very soon." She whispered.

She got ready and went downstairs, as her trusty bird flew in front of her, fluttering its wings. She extended her hand gracefully as it landed on her arm.

"Did you delivered my present? Thank you, my dear Rhonwen."

The magpie danced, showing off its blue feather. She chuckled and stepped further down the stairs, her footsteps being the only sound echoing in the hall.

Ceridwen took the hand offered to her and gave it a gentle shook, nodding her head ever so slightly. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mikan. Ceridwen Driscoll." She paused, placing a hand on her chest as she introduced herself. "Welcome to the academy." A quick look at her old watch once she let go of the blue-eyed girl drove her to skip pleasantries, as it were. "Classes are about to start, we should make haste." Gesturing with her head, she invited Mikan to walk along with her, on a steady pace for her to not struggle to keep up. "....Your bracelet is lovely." Ceridwen, having spend enough time to blend in with humans, had picked up little habits to make it so, one of them being how to not make a conversation awkward, thus leaving someone in a state of discomfort. Females, in particular, showed very often an interest for fashion, as to which Ceridwen would come to indulge herself for once, having noticed the accessory in the student's wrist. She spoke honest words, even if somehow acting upon a desire to fit in.

She'd smile slightly and walked beside Ceridwen and replied in a soft shy voice, "Thanks, m-my father gave it to me. It's actually hard to get off so I usually just keep it on. May I call you Ceri?"

"Yes, I think I share the same sentiment somewhat..." Unconsciously, Ceridwen's hand touched the choker around her neck, a presence she had long grown used to, despite Aonghus's gazes of discomfort whenever he laid eyes on it. She...simply could not bring herself to take it off. Even the thought of it was far too troubling. Shaking off such meddlesome thoughts, the two would reach the gates of the academy as the conversation proceeded. The moment coincided with surprise consuming the blue-haired witch, stunned by Mikan's request. It was odd, foreign more precisely. To have someone address her so familarily, besides her guardian... She was just not used to it in the slightest. "I...would not oppose to it." She nodded her head in confirmation, as it was the case just so. "G-Good morning, president!" "Good morning." Case in point, a fellow classmate greeted her on the way inside. Unheard of was the one to have someone call her by a nickname. Well, she is Japanese, perhaos it is difficult to pronnounce my name, is all. "....Oh, do you happen to know the class you have been assigned to yet, Mikan? If you wish, I could escort you to it." A sense of duty towards this young girl drove her to extend their interaction.

"Hm? Oh let me look," Mikan would reply, opening her bag to look through which caused her ripped up hands to show which were actually healing if one looked carefully. She pulled her schedule out and looked at it. "I have English first, then history and free period before lunch."

Closing the fair distance between the two of them, Ceridwen carefully read the paper in Mikan's hands. "Yes, I believe I do know where that class is located. Shall we...?" Gesturing to her right, she headed out to her assigned homeroom. "What year are you, Mikan, if you do not mind me asking?" She found it somewhat difficult to make out an answer on her own. Furthemore, it would be improper to judge her solely on her mannerisms and personality. Questions such as these could come across as that of small talk but if the new student did  mind it, she could simply decline to answer. Ceridwen would understand. I would not want someone to pry into my privacy. It would be hypocritical of me to do so if I think about it. "The teachers are strict and classes may take a little while for you to catch up to but if you meet their expectations, I am sure you will be fine."

Another morning in the life of 21 year old Jeffrey FrostBurne. Just it has done since the dawn of time, the sun rose from the east shining rays of light through his bedroom window. The light struck his sleeping eyes as it always does, at roughly 6 to 7 in the morning, his very own natural alarm clock. Sadly, Jeffrey had been drinking the night before; his head pounding with pain to the rhythm of his slow heartbeat. His room was fairly cold for this time of year, but that was because of Breln, the other half of Jeffrey. Even with his body complaining so profoundly, Jeffrey rose from his simple bed with a Eater Soul blanket and rubbed his eyes. As he did, visions of his dead parents flashed in his eyes; a torment that Breln relished in causing.

"Oh you jackass..." Jeffrey said with little surprise. He could almost feel the fluctuation of Breln's sick pleasure in his heart, that same evil sensation he has felt for many many years. Tears brewed for a split second before Jeffrey gave himself a firm smack on the face to snap him out of the depression. "Lets see what I have for today..." he muttered, pulling up a Wonderland Deadman Calender, admiring the artwork briefly before checking his schedule. In his strangely neat drunken handwriting were the words: School Today, Mathematics, English Make up, Ancient History, and Committee Meeting. In bright bold red lettering were the words: NO DRINKING TODAY! Upon reading that he sighed in disappointment, glancing at his still full Absinthe bottle on his nightstand. "Maybe next time friend, maybe next time."

Jeffrey followed his normal morning routine. Go to the kitchen, start the hot water, get a cup of instant coffee ready, and prepared a simple breakfast of yesterday's leftovers with a rolled omelette. Not long after his uncle Brande, who he lived with, walked out of the Master bedroom of their small house. Jeffrey smiled and said hi. He and his uncle were fairly close, ever since his parents had died Uncle Brande was more than willing to help raise the young Jeffrey and his older brother Johan. Even though Jeffrey was held back in school and was technically an adult his uncle didn't seem to mind. Uncle Brande took his spot on the table pulling out a small fantasy novel written in Japanese and promptly started reading.

"Is that demon causing you trouble at all Jeffrey?" he asked, paying half attention. "Oh you know the usual. Visions of a dead mom and dad, nightmares, a craving to kick someones ass." Jeffrey answered, pouring hot water into the instant coffee. "Do you need to stop by Grandpa's? I can drive you there if you need" Uncle Brande replied, looking up from his book with a concerned look on his face. "Nah I'll be fine. I haven't had an incident in a long time. Besides its just school today, I hear we'll have some new students. I just hope they aren't whiny jerks..."  His uncle put on a small smile and continued reading his book. Jeffrey finished his breakfast and guzzled down the coffee without any sugar or creamer, a truly bitter concoction but he needed the caffeine. Jeffrey returned to his room and put on the purple and white uniform of his high school, followed by his favorite long coat; a black leather coat made by their local leather worker. It had his initials stitched into the left pocket, a perfectly applied Calligraphic "J F" that always made him smile. Finally came his armband marked with the symbol of his school's Disciplinary Committee. Whenever other students saw the grown adult with that arm band, they would be afraid of him. Although the fear wasn't his desired reaction, it did help to create his desired result which was in the end keeping the school safe.

Jeffrey grabbed his satchel and walked for the door. "Goodbye Uncle Brande! I'll see you when I get home!he yelled. "Stay safe, don't lose control." he always answered. With that grim thought of losing control now stuck in his head, Jeffrey walked out heading for school. The air around him was chilly, not yet warmed by the rising sun but that wasn't an issue for his long coat. The sun was causing havoc for his hangover headache, his only hope was that he wouldn't be noticed as having a hangover. It was a fairly quiet day, birds chirping, children playing, cars driving by were all normal sounds. Suddenly he heard some rustling nearby followed by some chatter. A short run took him to the site of the rustling. While he was expecting a fight all he found were two girls wearing high school uniforms, the same uniforms for his high school. One girl had obnoxiously bright platinum blonde hair, and the other was a bit more ... refined, poised, and suddenly he felt Breln's influence. "That girl has power, lots of it... Fight her... Punch her... Beat her, punish her Kill..." "ENOUGH!!!" Jeffrey yelled angrily. He instantly felt like a fool, screaming like a lunatic interrupting their conversation. However, his heartbeat was fast, too fast... Breln's influence was still heavy, Jeffrey definitely didn't want an incident here, not after being clean for a few months.

"Sorry... just a little tired today. Jeffrey FrostBurne of the Disciplinary Committee." He said, showing his armband. "If there is something you need help with let me know, otherwise I gotta get to class."

She'd blink and look at Ceri. "W-well I uhm... I used to be homeschooled so I'm not quite sure, I'm around 16 though, 17 next month." She'd jump loudly at hearing some shouting, turning around and seeing a male. She': stare at him for a minute before slowly nodding. "S-sure... M-Mikan Harizuka. Nice to meet you..." she'd say rather quietly, her bracelet glistening in the light.

"Oooo Shiny bracelet... Take it... Come on you know it'd sell for lots, and you need more liquor right?" Breln whispered in his mind, his voice dark and tempting. Jeffrey gave himself another hard smack to the face, a literal Facepalm. He had obviously scared the blonde one, which made him feel like a huge ass. "Come on... Take it already!" "Mikan Harizuka? Haven't heard that name before. Damn... Does that bracelet have to be so damn bright? Gah damn kids. Well... I better get going. Sorry for scaring you."  Jeffrey apologized, his voice unenthusiastic, uncaring; almost even cold. He put his hands in his jacket pockets and slowly walked away. "You two better not be late for school or I'll have to mark  you down for detention."

He felt absolutely horrible, Breln hasn't tried anything in months, why was he showing up now? To some High School girl even? These questions would remain unanswered as all his strength now was focused on keeping Breln at bay. Perhaps he should've seen Grandpa, maybe he should run now... No bad idea. Running would make it easier for Breln to take over, he had to remain calm or else it would all be over.

(Not going to actually try to influence your characters, I'm just trying to make him seem like the Cold guy you asked for. If you wanted to keep talking to him just call him back. : ) )

She'd be taken aback slightly, yet was quite naive to his coldness and grabbed onto his hand before he left, giving him a bright smile, her hair fluttering in the wind; "that's quite alright; I'm new to public school so I got a bit lost. It was nice to meet you though." A pure; white rose Mark with a crown above it appeared on her head although only he and Ceri could see it for the few seconds it stayed.

(I'm going to bed :)  good night; you're welcome to keep going . I will reply tomorrow.)

Surprised, Jeffrey turned back around once he felt Mikan grab onto his hand firm. Mikan was smiling, which was odd. In what world when a man, an older man nontheless, yells at a couple of girls does he get a smile afterwards? He actually wondered if he was dreaming, or just having hallucinations.

"That's quite alright; I'm new to public school so I got a bit lost. It was nice to meet you though." She said almost happily, like she did not care that he was an ass. Jeffrey's heart beat slowed down, for the first time in a long while he felt actually calmed by someone who wasn't his Grandpa. A strange white rose crown 'thingie' as he would call it formed on her head. Jeffrey glanced over at the other girl wondering if she too could see it or if it was just him actually going crazy. "New to public school you say? Well I'll say this. You might've enjoyed homeschool a little more, all that freedom and such. Stay safe you two." Jeffrey said, returning a weak smile. "And get to class on time!"

"Hmm, seeing how you are about two years than me and your assigned classroom, I assume you are..." But the words died in her throat. The scream reached her, assaulting her off-guard. She turned around, somehow lost in confusion, wide-eyed even. It took her a moment to recognize the one to interrupt the flow of the conversation.Though it seemed it was far from being something caused on purpose... Member of the Disciplinary Committee, Jeffrey FrostBurne, stood idle by, it was as if his entire body shook in resonance to his shout, his anger, fear, Ceridwen could not have known what had drove him to do such a thing. It was disturbing, no, something that inspired her concern, it was more like it. But beyond knowing his name and face, she and the male were not close in the slightest. So, she was powerless to do anything as of the moment. She was impressed by Mikan's intervention, which would prompt her to follow with one of her own. "It is quite alright, Jeffrey. Please, do take care of yourself." That was not too intimate, was it? She hoped not, she did not wish to make him uncomfortable, moreso on what she could call their first meeting. "I am Ceridwen Driscoll, President of the Student Council. My offer is the same as yours."

"Do not worry, there will be no late arrivals from Mikan or myself. Thank you for your hard work." She reassured him a serious gaze, accompanied by a light bow of her head. It was quite pleasant to see someone devoted to their position in the school as him, so she could not help but approve of his attitude, even if he did appear a bit rough around the edges, as Aonghus would say. But the return of an ordinary exchange was cut short. The rose crown was visible for only but a moment but it was there, plain to see in the eyes of the Witch of Dreams as those of the Revenant. What in the world...? She was brought to her utmost shock. A lucid dream? No, it could not be. But then...? Questions would pile up to no avail and answer. Her eyes would meet Jeffrey's for only a mere second but somehow...she felt as if they had just shared a secret of their own. Had he seen it too? "Y-Yes, thank you, farewell!" The words would slip, as she was yet affected by the sight that haunted her. "...Mikan, your classroom is the one by the left in this hallway. I wish you a good first day and the best of luck. I must go to my classroom as well so it is time for us to part ways." She paused, speaking as softly as she could to hide her restlessness. "If you need anything, please feel free to ask for me at the Student Council room, I will be more than happy to provide anything you need. Goodbye." And so, she took off to her own classes, biting her bottom lip in retrospection.

Yes....it is definitely her, now I'm sure of it....but what could it all mean?

They all did not noticed, but Gwenevere was behind the girls walking behind them, smiling slightly as she pretended to look at sceneries. What fools! She knew she would need to wait around the magical people so the Rose princess would show up eventually. The knights, they are still in development, but they didn't conceal their power properly, and they stood so clear like street signs. Gwenevere cast on herself the best concealing spells an ancient witch could knew, and even without it she could hide her power entirely. Even to a powerful sorceror she would seem like the most normal human girl there could ever be.

She did not see the forehead rose, but from their reaction she knew it showed. She just need to be patient now.

Luck seemed to dawn on her as Mikan walked into the classroom she was supposed to be in as well. Gwenevere calmly went to her seat and started sorting the books, while thinking to herself. Patient now, she put the textbooks inside the table, let's be friendly but not too friendly. I just need to greet her, I supposed.

She lifted her head, pretended to have just noticed Mikan. With a innocent smile she walked in front of the blonde, and spoke with a gentle voice. "Hi. Sorry if I am too sudden, but I noticed that I haven't seen you around before. Are you the new student joining us this year?"

Mikan would give a smile to The girl in front of her who asked if she was new once she found her classroom and went inside to find a seat. "Y-yes, I'm Mikan. And you are?" She'd tilt her head curiously.

(I apologise for the short replies; my replies vary and this was originally supposed to be longer but I didn't know how to word it and I didn't want to make a fool of myself.) @Osthavula

Gwenevere smiled brightly, "I am Gwenevere, you can call me Gwen. I just wanted to say if you need any help you can always ask, since we are in the same class."

She extended her arm and pointed to a seat near the window at the third row, her white schoolbag lying on the chair.

"That is my seat for now. Do you have everything you need so far?"

@Lizzy Xio (Sorry for the short and late reply, I'm working on some paper right now. )

She'd nod and give a smile. "y-yes thank you." She'd walk past Gwen and go to a empty seat and the back, putting her stuff under the table lids and looks at the board quietly waiting for the teacher to arrive, which he did shortly. He was tall and had slightly long blonde hair with green eyes. "Good morning class. It seems we have a new student. Please stand and introduce yourself." At that, Mikan stood up and gave a kind smile. "Ohayo! I'm Mikan, please take good care of me." She'd smile and sit back down, the class stared at her, some whispering things. The teacher gave a nod and started the lesson.

Gwenevere went back to her seat as well, and she almost chuckled when Mikan was greeting so cheerfully. This girl definitly reminded her of someone. Yes, a certain... friend, she had. There was no more she could do but listen in class, but she glanced out of the window every once in a while, seeing if there is anything interesting.
The weather is good and sunny, with a little breeze. The leaves and the wild flowers danced ever so slightly, and the fish pond that she could see from here was still and clear.

The witch enjoyed her days over here. It was certainly more enjoyable than the days of war, when the soil bathe in red and people screamed and moan endlessly. These are good days, everything is in order and very peaceful, everything is.....

Soon, very soon...

She shifted her attention to the teacher again, and wrote down some notes. Her handwriting was neat and elegant, and she even draw some pictures on the sides.

Today was just a weird day, Breln acting up was cause for alarm and while he wanted to run to Elder Fraizurn his job as a Disciplinary member for the school had to come first as that was part of his agreement to the Principal. He works as an enforcer and they don't send him to jail for almost killing a girl. Of course that was Breln's fault but who is going to believe "A demon did it!"? Only an idiot would. Yet that girl... Mikan, she was different. She was bold enough to actually touch him, and speak to him as a person. Was it because she knew about Breln and wasn't afraid? Perhaps that rose thing on her forehead had some meaning to it. The other girl Ceriwiden Driscoll, the Student Council president, the god forsaken Student Council President also spoke to him as a person. "Take care of yourself." She said. If there was something left for Jeffrey to face care of. Being a Revenant meant that the real Jeffrey Frostburne was disappearing more and more everyday.

Eventually Jeffrey himself would be gone, replaced by Breln leaving only his body. A grim and depressing fate that he alone had to bear. Sharing that burden would only cause more pain for those around him, just like that girl whose heart literally broke. Jeffrey arrived at the Committee locker room, his locker was at the end, ironically numbered 666. He put in his combination, opening it to reveal the sword Brelnor, a demon sword imbued with the power of Breln. Just one cut from it could drive one to insanity, cursed by Breln which is why he hid it there. Instead he grabbed his books, placing them in his satchel. He spent a brief moment to reminisce on his encounter with those girls, they gave him a sense a peace, especially Mikan. Suddenly his head ached with pain as sharp whistling rang in his ears.

"Did you think I was going to leave you be boy?!" Breln yelled in his head. "You are mine! MINE!!! Mind, body, and soul! Hiding behind others will lead to their deaths. Just like her..."

5d3bd88c5e12ab54c29c9991f1fb1382a8118d64_hq.jpg

Images of the girl he hurt flooded his mind. Once again Breln had control of him, all he could do was weep. "You're a real prick... All I wanted was a friend..." Jeffrey sobbed. In that instant it ended, the vision of her faded back into reality. He was still in the locker room, and thankfully no one had seen his outburst. That's the way it must be, Jeffrey will always be alone. He must keep others away from him so that they can be safe from the demon inside. Once he had his stuff, Jeffrey slumped to his classroom where the teacher was giving a lecture.

"And Quoth the Raven Nevermore. That is one of Poe's most..." The teacher spoke as Jeffrey opened the door. His heavy boots broke the silence as he walked to his desk at the front of the room. "You do realize you are late again Jeffrey? What is it this time? Punks fighting, girls smoking on grounds... Demons ate your homework?" That last bit provoked laughter from the students. He grew furious and he slammed his fist on the teacher's desk shocking him. "Nope. This time a girl had a heart attack." He answered coldly, bluntly and without remorse. Jeffrey then sat down and the lesson continued. He heard the whispers of students behind him yet he never cared. Life for him was literal hell and it would always be that way.

@Lizzy Xio Mentioned @Gem Mentioned.

Mikan would hum and listen to the teacher, a small pain going through her back which she tried to ignore. She wasn't going to let that bother her first day and chance at making friends. She'd sit up a bit more straighter and wrote notes down before the bell rang, signalling that class was over. Between each class they had a 15 minute break to prepare themselves for their next one. Mikan ended up being surrounded by other students, asking questions. She grew quite nervous then and answered a few before taking the stuff out of her desk and leaving in haste. @Gem @Onyx Energy @Osthavula
