if you think about it, harper would be the australian female version of batman except she's was never a hero and she was the reason why her parents died in the first place. harper was born in the heart of perth, western australia as the only child. both of her parents, katrina and matthew hawthorne, both worked in business with each of them owning two major companies under their names as ceo. their marriage never involved love or friendship, it was their parents' decision to have the marriage arranged so they could continue to grow their wealth together as a couple. after a few years of their marriage, harper was born into the world with big brown eyes. but harper was never considered a child or daughter to katrina or matthew. instead, she was just an accessory to their wealth and a reason for the media to be interested in them. harper spent most of her childhood curious in everything she saw, including a bright red box with the orange label reading 'matches'. as the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat and that's what exactly harper did.

it was a warm summer night in the hawthorne penthouse, harper's parents were silently typing away on their new macbooks as harper ate her dinner in silence in front of the tv in the living room. as she slowly made her way back into the kitchen to put her dish away, her eyes caught a glimpse of that mysterious bright red box that sat next to her mother's favourite set of candles. harper inched closer to the box as her eyes became filled with curiosity and what felt like a second, her whole world was burning. the police never discovered what caused the fire, some say that it was a candle that set the flame alit, others said their child went crazy and burnt the place down. harper kept quiet about the whole disaster, shedding a few tears for the media before she was swept away and moved into her aunt's apartment in london where the media couldn't hunt the child down.

harper never knew her mother had a sister, let alone knowing any other family beside her parents. harper grew cold and distant as guilt began to form a permanent mark on her heart. despite her aunt's attempts to open up harper's cold shell but each time she failed, harper wasted her life in her dark room learning piano like her mother did when she was a child. it wasn't until harper's aunt confessed a family secret.

magic ran through the hawthorne blood, including harper's. of course, harper didn't believe her aunt after what happened back in perth but with a flick of her aunt's beautiful stick, harper was awestruck. her aunt applied her to hogwarts the very next day as she began to buy things harper didn't even need for school as she taught her her tips and tricks of the new magical world. even to this day, it's still a shock to harper but there's a part of her that wishes she never learnt about it in the first place.
