Help Private messaging - giving a like or a love

[Cold Ramen Noodles]

Maybe I'm just really stupid, but my partner is able to give my messages a little heart for love but I'm only able to give a cookie for like. I am able to give either a like or a love on other posts on the site, but not on any of my private messages. (I looked at multiple ones that I have going.) I'm only able to give out cookies. But my partners are obviously able to give out hearts as well since I get hearts from them. Am I just missing something?
