Princess x Prince

@ImagineInPink ((Ack, sorry for the late reply! Got tied up in school work! Here is just a rough start. I'm not entirely sure how long you wanted the start to be. ^^" This is your prince!))

The young man looked outside of the castle windows, and envisioned clear skies filled with birds and life. He could smell the sweet spring air and the soft breeze blow through his brown hair and feel the sun rays sink into his skin, but this was all a fantasy. Instead of gorgeous sunlight and chirping robins, there was destruction and cries for help. There was blood and sickness, abandoned orphans and wild savages running free. It made him wonder whether the walls that he stood within were protective or isolating. Protective to keep the young Prince from harm's way, to ensure that there would be an heir to the thrown and a strong leader. Or isolating the town from the one they saw as a ruler, as a guider. The one they needed most when they were truly suffering, which they were. The young prince sighed at the depressing sight. He might of been thankful it was at a distance, it might have been too much for him if it was in full detail. But, everything seemed smaller at a ways away, and maybe his father and mother needed a closer look to understand their people. He briskly walked away from the scene to address the King and Queen in their court, and this time he wasn't going to let them knock him down.

"Don't slouch like that, Hazel. We know you don't like this, but there is no other choice."

A beautiful and sophisticated woman said. The handsome man next to her simply nodded. The man and woman seemed to speak and sit with an aura of wisdom and power. However, due to their handsome features, they did not look as old as they really were. Then again, you were expected to look perfect when you ruled a Kingdom.

The girl to which the order was directed to quickly straightened her posture, nodded and resumed looking at the window of the carriage in which they were traveling. She thought her parents put too much emphasis on little things like these, but they had explained to her that it was important to look confident and lady-like in front of other people. Something she was supposed to remember when she met the King and Queen of a neighboring Kingdom in a few hours. There had been a reason why the royal family of the Nova Kingdom were on their way to visiting the Kingdom they were at war with. A hope for the war to stop had blossomed between the Kingdoms a few days before. Part of that hope was Hazel, whose bright caramel colored eyes were glued to the window.

Somehow, her parents had convinced her that marriage was the way to ignite the flame of peace. Truthfully, she had no idea how an expensive and arranged marriage was going to change anything. Of course, this would be a peace treaty of sorts. She just didn't know how they couldn't have done that with an actual peace of paper. Not to mention that her Kingdom was suffering and they were spending money in the ceremony. Her parents hadn't really given her permission to go outside and roam around her castle. Then again, they never really did, even before the war. Nonetheless, Hazel was not stupid. She knew perfectly well that people were suffering. This single thought was enough to give her the courage to go through with the marriage. Otherwise, she wouldn't be here right now.

For the moments that she was looking at the window, the girl thought back to her younger days. When the Kingdoms were all at peace and annual conferences were held. She had friends back then. Although her memory was fuzzy, she remembered she actually had a best friend. Who that person had been, she really did not remember. If there was anything she needed right now, it was a friend.

After a few more hours, the family finally arrived to the enemy's castle. The guards looked at the family with some sort of hatred. Hazel, on the other hand, smiled at them brightly. It was her habit to go around smiling at everyone she saw. It was a matter of being polite, and it made her happy to have the things she did. Not everyone was as lucky as she was, after all.

"Ah, grand, Liam you are here just in time," the King announced from his throne. The young man stopped in his tracks and looked at his parents with a raised eyebrow in confusion.

"Due to the state of our Kingdom, and the Nova Kingdom, we have decided to put aside our differences and conjoin the two Kingdoms together, through the marriage of our son and their daughter." The Queen continued with excitement to lessen his wonder, but Liam's staring expression showed no hint of excitement. It had been a long time since he had heard their enemy Kingdom name, for so long in fact he might have assumed that the name was banned from ever reaching the royalty's ears. But there was no deceiving here, his parents were serious, and Liam wasn't sure how to react.

"They should be arriving any minute now, Liam, so straighten up and look like a prince!" the King suddenly snapped. Liam's eyebrow's furrowed over his slate grey eyes and his fists clenched.

"And how do you think this silly marriage is supposed to solve the problems that are happening in our Kingdom alone?" he lashed. "Just because the war is ending doesn't mean people still aren't suffering. There is more at sta-"

"Don't you dare use those words against me!" His father roared and stood up from his throne. With strong, lengthy strides the King stood inches away from his only son. "You will do this for us," he spat, his eyes holding much more anger than his son's. "And then we can worry about poor, sick dying people. But for now, we need to find a way to stop this war, and the only way to do that is for you to marry the young lady who will be here any second by now, or you'll have more than just a kingdom to worry about." The King glared at his son, making sure his point was getting across his mind. "So sit in your chair like a good boy, and let's not have any troubles." The King and his son continued to stare each other down until a guard came rushing into the court.

"Uhm, pardon me, your majesty," he coughed, "The King and Queen of the Nova Kingdom have arrived with their daughter.... is this a good time?"

"Yes, of course, let them in!" the King granted cheerfully. "I was just giving my son a little prep talk, isn't that right my boy?" The King patted Liam hard on the back, and gave him a subtle stare. Liam's eyes rolled as he slowly made his way to his throne and plunked himself in the seat.

"Sit up my boy!" the Queen hissed, her eyes easily as intimidating as her husbands. "This is the way I met your father, you know," she tried to comfort. "And we've been together for a long time. You should be thanking us." Liam straightened himself to look like the prince they wanted him to be, but said nothing to his mother. Before another word could be discussed, the court doors cracked opened. Liam held his breath, not knowing what to expect.

Now in front of the castle, the King, Queen and Princess quickly got out of their carriage and were directed towards the throne room. During this time, Hazel couldn't help but feel the most nervous she had felt in her whole life. The girl did not know her 'fiance'. What were they going to do? Get married and then move to their own Kingdoms? Live together in the middle of their Kingdoms? Truthfully, the second option seemed a little too much for the young woman. It wasn't that she didn't want to get to know him, but this was way too sudden. At the end though, the decision would not be theirs. They had no say in this. Well, at least she didn't.

That amount of fear simply increased as the doors of the throne room started to open. Of course, her mother glanced back at Hazel to make sure she looked as perfect as could be. The Princess made justice to her mother's expectations. The Queen had made sure of it when they left their own Kingdom that same day.

The moment the doors opened, her parents walked in front of her. Once they were close enough, they separated and allowed Hazel to come into view. As soon as she was within view of the royal family, the girl skillfully and quickly bowed down to the King and Queen. Her parents, on the other hand, simply remained standing. After all, they had the same title. There was no reason to vow down unless it was needed. Once she came back up, a small and polite smile appeared on her face.

"It's a pleasure to meet you."

Hazel said, mostly directing her greeting to the King, Queen, and Prince. She had to admit, the young man was handsome. Then again, she was sure his parents expected him to look as good as her parents did with her. Now with that small greeting out of the way, her parents then proceeded to introduce the young woman.

"This is our daughter, You Majesties. Princess Hazel."

The Princess smiled again after her Mother was done introducing her. For a brief moment, she looked back at the Prince. She had met countless Princes, but they all seemed quite self-centered to her. Was the young man in front of her going to be the same? Only caring about his power and riches? Hopefully not. The most this girl could do was hope.

Prince Liam looked at Hazel as if something was familiar about her. No matter, he maintained his poised position as he continued to spectate her. What was it about the brown locks and light blue eyes that poked at his memory? The King and Queen smiled warmly, charmed by the young woman's manners. "We are pleased to welcome you into our Kingdom, Hazel," the Queen spoke. "We would like to reintroduce you to our son, Liam. I am sure you two remember each other when you were little," the Queen smiled and nodded to her son. Liam looked at his mother with utter confusion. His eyes widened, and his eyebrows curved upwards.

"Mother, what on earth are you talking about?" the boy whispered to his mother.

"You don't remember? Oh you and Hazel were great friends when you were young," she quietly replied. "Now hush my darling, your father is about to speak."

"Yes, it is a great pleasure to finally see your daughter," the King confirmed and nodded his head. "I assure you Hazel will find herself comfortable during her stay. Our servants have set up a room for her," the King summoned a few of the servants with a wave of his hand. "My servants would be honored to bring her things to the room we've prepared," he added. Liam continued to look at the young woman, trying to remember. Most of his childhood had been forced out of him when the war started, so most of the memories he had as a child were gone. "Liam, why don't you show Hazel around he gardens? It's too nice out to stay in here all day," the King suddenly suggested. Liam looked back at his father, then stood up from his seat and walked towards Hazel. He held out a white gloved hand to the young woman, waiting for her to take it.

The girl returned the smile that the King and Queen were giving her. She was happy to know she was doing this correctly. After all, a mistake could mean the continuation of the horrible war that plagued both Kingdoms. When they did welcome her, Hazel nodded as gratitude. It was going to be hard staying away from her home from now on. The greeting they have her sort of reminded her of the fact that she wouldn't go back to her own Kingdom. After she got married, this place would be her official home. Although this made her feel sad, everything was going as she expected it, until Hazel heard about knowing Prince Liam since they were little. That was something she did not remember. Without showing her confusing, the girl kept listening to the King and Queen in front of her.

"I appreciate your concern for my comfort. Thank you."

Hazel announced with a grateful smile as she stayed in place, waiting to see what would happen next. To tell the truth, she was a little surprised when the King and Queen suggested for Liam to show her around. Sure, she would love to see the gardens but she had not expected to have such direct contact with the Prince so soon. Then again, they were going to get married pretty soon. With a small smile, the girl watched as the Prince approached her. Once he stretched out his hand, the Princess quickly bowed down to the King and Queen before accepting his gloved hand with one of her own. It was weird to suddenly hold hands with a guy like that. However, she kept the weird feeling inside and waited until the Prince directed her out of the throne room. Before she left, Hazel smiled slightly at her parents. It was obvious they had things to talk about with the rules of this Kingdom, and as a result, she did not want to interrupt by saying goodbye to them. Although she knew they would stay in this castle until after the wedding.

Liam gave a small smile, though it was easy to tell it wasn't emotional, just to comfort the princess. "Come, the gardens are this way," he said as he led her down a short hall from the court. The door opened and lead to a smaller area that was filled with a variety of flowers, and one of the biggest oak trees you could ever imagined. Fastened onto one of the tree's lower branches with two pieces of rope was a small, wooden plank. Liam remembered the times when he was small enough to swing on the crudely fashioned swing, but now he was much too tall and heavy. He couldn't even sit on the swing without fear of breaking the tree's branch. Someday he wanted to have a swinging bench tied onto a higher, much stronger branch of the tree so he could enjoy it's shade during the summer once more.

"Please, rest," Liam kindly said and gestured his hand towards a white garden bench. There were flower bushes on either side of the bench, and behind it was a small fountain. The servants always told him of stories of when they would scold him for playing in the water when he was little. The King and Queen would be furious when the servants returned their only heir soaking wet, head to toe, and would have him washed up then locked in his room for the rest of the day. Liam vividly remembered being confined to the walls of his lonely room, he would be relieved when his parents only confined him to the walls of the castle! He never understood why his parents didn't have another child. Liam felt like his life would have been much easier if he had a companion. Perhaps this young woman was here for that very reason.

Hazel truly appreciated Prince Liam's comforting smile. It was hard to be away from her home for a while. However, to know she wouldn't go back was even worse. It wasn't like Hazel thought she would be uncomfortable here. The problem was leaving what she knew behind. Although what she knew was simply the insides of the castle. She had sneaked out once or twice to go visit the town on her own. However, her parents gave her quite the scolding when a soldier found her roaming around. Not only that, but her favorite parts of the castle were off limits for a while as punishment. Her parents had also included much more lessons after that. However, the young woman never regretted it. She had seen part of her Kingdom. In those days though, her home had been a lot happier. The days where Kingdoms were at peace.

Her thoughts were interrupted, however, when they finally came to the garden. It brought a smile to her face. A smile that, opposed to the ones she gave earlier, was a little more genuine and happy. The flowers smelled wonderful and the big oak tree was so green that she wanted to climb it. Of course, such behavior was not very lady-like. As a result, her parents had told her to refrain from being the way she truly was. A less than perfect Princess.

"It's lovely. These flowers must receive quite a lot of care..."

The girl said as she smiled and nodded when he told her to rest. She gracefully sat down in the bench, despite her true desires of running around the many flowers. The most she could do was turn to the side and poke the bush next to her. After doing so, she started to stroke some of the leafs. They were so soft and beautiful. It made her happy. Plus, although it was sort of awkward, it was kind of nice to have someone next to her. Most of the time, the one thing she really needed was a friend. She had met royalty that were happy with the many riches and material things they possessed. However, Hazel could never bring herself to feel truly happy with such things. She had tried to make friends before, but it was always hard when you couldn't really go anywhere.

"Prince Liam.....is it true that we knew each other from when we were younger? Pardon my fuzzy memory, but I really don't remember."

Prince Liam sighed, and sat down next to the princess. "Yes, our gardeners give this place a lot of attention. My mother actually used to tend some of the flowers in the garden, but ever since we expanded our staff she found no need to go outside anymore." He shrugged and picked off a white flower from one of the bushes. He twisted the flower left to right between his fingers, watching the petals twirl from one side to the other as he did. "And the oak tree has been growing here for generations. My own grandfather remembered using the very same swing when he was young." He smiled at the thought of his grandfather playing underneath the oak. Liam was ten when his grandfather had died, and back then things were much more peaceful. He recounted the times when he would run around the castle with his grandfather and father as a young boy, and when his grandfather properly taught him how to sword fight. How he longed for the day when he would finally win a match against him, but that day never came.

Liam looked up to Princess Hazel with a smirk. "To be honest, I'm not very sure myself," he chuckled. "You would think we would remember our childhood," he further joked. It was sad that most of what had happened when he was young was long forgotten. It was forced out of him, really, and no one ever told him why. Most of what he actually remembered were stories from the servants around the castle. They were the kind of stories to occupy him and keep him out of trouble. "Does this place look familiar to you?" he asked, thinking maybe she had visited once when she was young.

Hazel nodded in understanding as he told her about the gardeners. To tell the truth, her parents used to go out into the Kingdom a lot. They would go and visit their sick subjects. What had changed to prevent that, she did not know. The only thing she did know was that her parents just didn't do that anymore. At some point, the girl had thought that they had grown too accustomed to the riches of being a King and Queen. That they thought it was not necessary to see their people as long as the castle was coated with gold and their materialistic loves well protected. Maybe the reason why the young woman had not fallen down the same hole was because she had gone out to see the people on her own at least once. The Princess had seen not just the pretty parts, but the parts of her home that she wished she could change. That was the very reason she was doing this. The fuel that kept her going through this intimidating change.

"I understand what you mean. Mother and Father used to visit the people, but they suddenly stopped. I'm not sure why they stopped, but going out with them back then was really fun."

The Princess said with a small smile. She was not sure why, but she felt comfortable around Liam. Was it because they knew each other from before? Maybe he was the best friend she remembered having. Responding to his chuckles, the Princess laughed slightly herself. At this, her voice seemed to sound almost like a song. She had been trained to sound pleasant when she laughed, after all. One of the many things her parents had been able to change about her.

"I don't remember much. Mother and Father simply stopped talking about other Kingdoms after the fights started. They wanted those memories out of me in the fear that I wouldn't agree with their motives for war. Of course, I didn't, but no one ever listened to me. Although, I might have been here before all that happened. The swing seems sort of familiar. To tell you the truth, I remember having a best friend back then. Who that was....I don't remember."

The girl said, then looked back at Liam with a smile.

"It is strange, I do remember having a friend myself when I was younger, and I remember my mother used to fawn over her like she was the most precious thing in the world," Liam chuckled out loud to himself. "Honestly I think she really wanted to have a daughter, but I don't think my father was up to the task of having another child." Liam never understood the royal life. His mother was an only child, his father was an only child, he was an only child. Was the royal family just mean to be lonely? "Oh, isn't she the cutest thing, Liam?" the prince started to imitate his mother in a silly manner, but he meant well. It was something he was actually allowed to do in the castle without a strict hand on him. His parents enjoyed his sense of humor. "I hope you find someone like this little cutie, this sweet little....." he paused, trying to remember the name of the girl he knew as a young boy. He laughed to himself again, and the flower in his hand stopped spinning. "Gosh, for the life of me I just can't remember." Prince Liam looked up at Hazel with a smile. He looked down to the flower in his hands, then back to Hazel's long, brown curls. Slowly he lifted his hand with the flower towards her face, and moved back a section of Hazel's hair. "Is this all right?" he timidly asked before he dared to place the flower in the young woman's hair.

The young girl listened to Liam's story with a smile. It seemed weird to her that both of them had a close friend when they were littler. Even more that they couldn't remember. Then again, Hazel's memory had always been pretty bad. Whatever it was, the girl easily forgot it. The only things she was really able to retain were things that interested her. Although annoying, her lessons were interesting most of the time. Which was good, because she was expected to remember a lot of things.

"I understand what you mean. I think my parents were pretty gender neutral when it came to the baby they wanted. The only thing that mattered for them was to make the child into a good ruler. Plus, it seems they only needed one child."

The Princess had always wondered why she didn't have any siblings. She guessed the reason why was because one child was all her parents needed. Had she been a male, they would have really taught her how to rule. However, since she had been born a female, they simply needed someone to marry her off to. And it seemed that person was sitting right next to her. It was hard for Hazel to think about Liam as her fiance, but there wasn't much she could do about it. At least, not without harming her Kingdom.

When the Prince began to imitate his Mother, Hazel laughed slightly. Not in a mocking way, of course. Plus, it seemed like Liam cared for his parents. The way he had been imitating his mother seemed to be playful and had a hint of gentleness to it. Although it really was too early to tell, Hazel had the impression that Liam was a good person. That his goal might just be the same as hers. To simply stop this war and better the lives of their people.

"It's okay. If it makes you feel better, I can't remember either."

Hazel said as she watched the flower twirl in his hands. The way the sun hit it at just the right angle to make the white of the flower seem almost angelic. When it stopped though, Hazel looked up to see Liam's hand getting closer to her hair. She felt her hair being pulled back gently, her face showing a bit of shock and a faint blush of her cheeks.

"Of course....you may."

Hazel said and smiled at him. She found the treatment a little embarrassing, but sweet as well. She was not used to being treated like this. Her Father could be a little overprotective sometimes, and watched over all her meetings with other Princes or any guy, really. No one had been brave enough to even touch her. However, she was now engaged to the man next to her. If anything, this should be normal, right? Even if she wasn't used to it.

Liam continued to place the flower in her hair, and when he let his hands fall back to his lap he gave a small smile. The way her hair flowed around her face and the white, innocent flower was nearly flawless. Liam felt like he should have said something, but nothing came to his mind. Maybe he was too nervous, or anxious, or scared, or any other feeling that didn't feel right. "Have your parents ever mentioned anything about our Kingdoms before the war?" he stuttered, still unsure how he should have continued the conversation. Liam had a feeling his father would want to slap him on the head for such a terrible transition. He would have him to smack a kiss on the poor young girl and get on with it. Hearing stories from his child hood were probably the minority of what it was like before the bloodshed began. Were the Kingdoms ever unified in some way before? That Liam did not know, and he never ever dared to ask a question like that. Part of him was trained to fear those kind of conversations, and more or less his father's fury. "Conversations like this have piratically been banned from my parents' ears, well at least until now of course," he sighed, clutching his hands in his lap.

Really, the feeling of embarrassment grew as he put the flower on her hair. Yet, instead of normal embarrassment, her stomach had butterflies. Was it because the Prince was such an attractive person? Or was it that he was being so nice to her that it made her feel fuzzy inside? At the end though, the girl smiled at Liam as he put his hands back on his lap. A small silence followed his actions and Hazel was not sure what to say. To tell the truth, despite her manners and royal appearance, she was actually quite horrible when it came to social interactions. Because it seemed Prince Liam was not like the others, she was not sure what she was supposed to say. When the Prince asked her a random question, however, the girl gave him a friendly smile.

"Well, I merely know that our Kingdoms used to have a really good relationship. I'm not sure what happened though. My parents gave me little answers when I asked questions."

The girl said, noticing the way he tightened his hands on his lap. She really did feel bad about this whole thing. What if Liam had someone he loved, and she was in his way due to the marriage. Because Hazel wanted to calm him down, she decided to change the topic. Hazel looked around for an excuse or conversation topic, when her eyes landed on the oak tree that was in the middle of the garden. She really, really wanted to climb that. However, she had to find out if the tree was sturdy enough. Not to mention that she had to make sure no one would see her. If her future in-laws and fiance were to see her, then bad things would happen. As a result, she decided the best way to know for sure was to ask Liam. Who else would know? Plus, she wanted to take away such depressing topics out of Liam's mind.

"Liam, out of curiosity, how rigid and sturdy is that tree?"

Hazel asked, pointing to it.
