It's not a very sensible choice for average. As the middle of a bell curve is average, why shouldn't the middle of a ten-point scale be?

It's a weighted scale. 4s aren't half as good as 8's. They're closer to 3/4. The weighted scale allows you to choose from 7 above, and really show where your strengths are. Rarely is somebody less than 2/3 as strong, or fast, of smart as other people. That's why 2 and 3 are heavily weighted.
