virtues
bold, easy-going, creative, observant, diplomatic

vices
secretive, dislikes rules, reckless, irresponsible, easily bored

At first glance, Nevaeh is a fairly pleasant person to be around. Chances are that you've heard her name before around the school halls (although she's nowhere near the head of the pack in terms of popularity), but in all honesty, meeting her doesn't leave that striking of an impression. Nevaeh's relaxed and
easy-going
nature is the first thing many notice, and while it's clear that she's sociable, she's definitely not the most flamboyant (obnoxious) person out there.

But be warned -- Nevaeh is no reserved loner sitting in the corner, no quiet art kid who keeps it on the down low. Although she's not the loudest person out there, she's undeniably
bold
, in more ways than one. Nevaeh makes no hesitation to stand up for herself; she's rather tolerant overall, but she knows her worth and knows her territory and refuses to let anyone cross it. Nonetheless, Nevaeh very rarely gets into conflicts because of how
diplomatic
she is; her social intelligence and assertiveness balance each other out rather well.

Nevaeh is also rather
creative
, a trait that most typically makes itself known through her art (she's especially fond of bright colors and avant garde designs). Her
observant
nature is especially helpful in terms of her hobbies; Nevaeh takes a lot of inspiration from seemingly minute things in real life, and although she wouldn't call herself excessively detail-oriented, she has a natural eye for pinpointing mistakes and things that can be improved. Beyond her artistic ventures, Nevaeh is also creative in terms of making out-of-the-box decisions. Conventional habits don't really click the best for her; you can trust Nevaeh to accommodate for herself.

On the flip side, Nevaeh can also be disappointingly
irresponsible
. She marches to the beat of her own drum, and sometimes, that involves completely ignoring things that don't click for her. She's not necessarily absent-minded, but she can easily forget about things that don't appeal to her. She lives in the moment and is
easily bored
by everything, even things she enjoys; consistency creates expectation, and what's fun about predictability? Sure, she can be a little
reckless
, but on the other hand, she could be boring and uptight, and that's not a win in her books. If you're thinking that Nevaeh
dislikes rules
. . . well, you'd be right. Basically, Nevaeh is not the kid with the model student kind of mindset that teachers look for.

Nevaeh is aware that she can come off as someone who is very upfront about her personality; being on the more extroverted side can create that impression. But in reality, she's actually extremely
secretive
; she maintains her everyday facade so well that no one really expects her to be almost deceptive about major parts of her identity. No one in school really knows about her family, or anything deeper about herself than surface-level things like being on the softball team or being in graphic design. It's not that she's ashamed, but Nevaeh simply has a habit of not opening up or being transparent about her "true" self, be it concerning her family or just her feelings in general. Nevaeh has absolutely no qualms about hiding those kinds of details from even her closest friends. Hope they don't find out and feel betrayed 🤷‍♀️

Nevaeh's closet mainly consists of jeans and brightly colored tops + dresses. She's fond of neons and jewel tones, but will wear a warm neutral from time to time. .
the world erupted in mid-april
Nevaeh’s birth was nothing monumental. She entered the world on a chilly spring evening, at the time of day when pastel hues escaped the sky to make way for inky spills of navy and indigo. She entered the world with a cry, then a giggle, and that was that.

.
life is like a steady stream
Her father was a reserved man, working tirelessly as a software developer, while her mother was a singer, taking up gigs at the local bar and wherever else she could find them. They couldn’t have been more different; Nevaeh’s father was quiet, diligent, and pragmatic, while her mother was loud, flamboyant, and irresponsible. Curiously enough, for all of her father’s glacial shyness, he was the one who read them bedtime stories and took them to school. He was the one who inspired Nevaeh to code, who allowed their daughters to foster their interests. Curiously enough, for all of her mother’s color and boldness, Nevaeh remembers her in wisps that barely reach her periphery.

Nevaeh’s older sister, Aaliyah, was five years older than her, and a more dramatic imitation of both of their parents than Nevaeh ever could be. They were fairly close growing up, in the love-hate way that siblings with larger age gaps were. Nevaeh was fairly extroverted, but generally easy-going, while her sister set fire to the road she paved and walked down it confidently. They didn’t have traditionally compatible personalities, but they got along.

All was well.

.
when everything went to shit
When Nevaeh was ten, some dastardly creature of fate grabbed the steering wheel of her life and veered it far off the ordinary paved road it was driving on.

It would've been a lie if Nevaeh said she didn't see it coming. Mild she was in temperament, it was undeniable, but Nevaeh was always perceptive when it came to people. She knew how to read a room, she knew who felt uncomfortable, she knew who was more inclined to do the questionable.

So when Nevaeh's mother was caught in the midst of her long-term affair with another woman, Nevaeh remembered the occasional lipstick stains under the collar of her mother's bright linen shirts, like mulberry blossoms and carmine whispers. She remembered the noticeable shift in temperament as her mother left the house for her "gigs"; her dull eyes, lined with kohl and glitter, would brighten with a newfound flame, like the twilights that meant it was time to go to the club were sunrises for her. Nevaeh felt betrayed, hurt, stabbed in the back, but deep down, she wasn't surprised.

Nevaeh's father took it poorly; underneath his stony exterior was a bleeding heart. To be fair, there's no easy way to handle an affair, but it struck Nevaeh's father right in his Achilles', taking him down like an arrow to the heart of a deer. He blames it on the fact that she likes women and that her sexuality and her experimentation caused her affair, but Nevaeh remembers her mother's wandering eyes and flippant disregard of her husband and Nevaeh knew that her mother's infidelity had nothing to do with her sexuality.

.
the sun rises again
Four years later, Nevaeh's father remarried.

His new wife was a Maine native who recently moved to Chicago. Nevaeh didn't know much more about her before the marriage, but she remembers noting her future stepmother's appearance -- pale skin, rotund form, light hair, blue eyes. She was the polar opposite of Nevaeh's biological mother -- at least, externally.

Linda Whitaker was her name. She was a warm, exuberant woman, and tried so hard that Nevaeh immediately felt suffocated by her overbearing nature. They didn't really get along, although it was mainly a tale of Nevaeh escaping her stepmother's attempts at bonding and Linda unintentionally forcing her opinions and beliefs on her, rather than them clashing and constantly getting into arguments. Other than that, their relationship wasn't too bad, but Nevaeh didn't like the situation. Not at all. She spent the first few years avoiding home as much as possible so she wouldn't have to see what her family had become.

Aaliyah didn't take to it well either. She and her sister had a fairly good relationship before, but ever since the remarriage, it felt strained, though not at the fault of themselves. Aaliyah couldn't stand to see their new household. She couldn't stand being forced to consider these newcomers, these intruders, as part of their family, and Nevaeh agreed completely. But Aaliyah was more headstrong than her, more opinionated, and far more stubborn, so she took to the change far more poorly.

They had two new step-siblings too. Nevaeh's stepbrother, Finn, was in her grade. He was nice -- a little shy, but pleasant and polite, and a lot nicer and more mature than others his age. Nevaeh has absolutely no problems with him, but they go about their lives pretending like they aren't even aware of each other's existence.

On the flip-side, Nevaeh felt an unusual fondness for her younger step-sister. Gwendolyn Whitaker was just a child -- still innocent, still youthful, still kind. Nevaeh would help her with her math homework or kick around a soccer ball for her in the backyard.

Three years later, they all get along much better. Aaliyah still avoids the Whitakers and tends towards Nevaeh, but they've all learned to coexist.

Nevaeh's biological mother is out of her life forever, but sometimes, she still thinks of her heady perfume and her kohl-lined eyes.

.
who am i
There's just one problem, though.

There's no kind way to say it. Linda Whitaker is a massive homophobe. Maybe it's from her religious upbringing. Maybe she's just a bigot. Nevaeh doesn't know why, but she does know that Linda goes on long tangents about how the homosexuals are defected and that they don't deserve equal rights when they could be influencing others to be like them. And Nevaeh's father -- still scarred from his first wife's affair -- agrees. Not so much out of homophobia, but because it's so much easier to blame his first wife's infidelity on her sexuality than her actual personality.

Nevaeh never thought much of it. She disagreed with Linda, but hey, Linda's the overbearing type anyway. Nevaeh just blocks it out, like she does for everything else.

But recently, she's been having some doubts. And Nevaeh's not so sure about what she should do.

LIKES
DISLIKES
English class (or studying any language that's not code, for that matter) • academics in general, while we're on that topic • long school days • overbearing and intrusive people • monotony • too much structure • running laps • not knowing what to do • strong perfume • fried chicken • silence • the color mauve • being early
she has moderate dyslexia -- as a result, she's not so fond of English or reading, but surprisingly, math and programming have always come fairly easily to her in comparison • she is mildly farsighted — at a level where she can easily tell, but not so much that she needs reading glasses • doesn't eat meat that often, but is not a strict vegetarian • she's in the varsity softball team, but wouldn't call herself athletic in general • pretty across the board in terms of grades -- she's a top scorer in math and the arts and does decently in the sciences, but averages about a C for English, history, and Spanish (which she dropped ASAP, thank god) • knows HTML, CSS, Java, C++, and Python
MISC
family
father
Elliot Coleman
They don't have an openly affectionate relationship; their love for each other goes unspoken. Nevaeh pities her dad, but she still cares about him, even if they don't spend as much time with each other as they did in her youth.
mother
Aimee Jallow
In all honesty, Nevaeh is more bitter about how easily their mother left them and moved on than the affair itself. Maybe because she always expected that kind of behavior from her. Regardless, they haven't spoken since Aimee left.
sister
Aaliyah Coleman
Aaliyah, currently 22, and Nevaeh definitely have a pretty strong relationship. They banter a lot and Aaliyah's pretty impatient, but they know they can count on each other above all.
stepmother
Linda Whitaker
Linda is a nice woman, and she tries. Nevaeh respects that, but at the same time, she needs her space, and Nevaeh can't help but feel frustrated with Linda's overbearing self. Recently, she's been mulling over Linda's homophobic words a little more than usual.
stepbrother
Finnian Whitaker
He's a nice guy. They get along decently, but they aren't too close. They're in the same grade, but they act like they don't even know each other.
stepsister
Gwendolyn Whitaker
She's sweet. At 12 years of age, she's a little more innocent and optimistic than most in her grade. Nevaeh wonders if she'll see that side of Gwen dissolve in the coming years, but for now, she'll help her out if she needs it.
