We'll have to think of a good title.

To say that Cassandra was excited was an understatement. When she walked through Oreburgh gate, into the city ‘full of energy’, she could hardly believe she was there. Of course, she had visited before. It was fairly close to Jubilife, where she had lived, but she was in Oreburgh for a different reason; to get her first gym badge. There was also a sense of relief; she wouldn’t have to camp for the next few days. She expressed such relief to the owner of a small inn within the city. His rooms were simple and inexpensive, and he had kindly offered to look after her camping equipment while she was staying so that it didn’t clutter her room.

It was late afternoon by the time Cassie had checked in, and she was a little tired, but mostly hungry. She knew that her female Starly, whom she had caught recently, would be in need of some TLC. Her male Shinx, who was always out of his Pokeball was casually sniffing around her room as she changed out of her walking boots into her more comfortable shoes. She also switched from a t-shirt and jacket to a jumper. Her Shinx jumped up onto the bed and curled up immediately.

“I guess I’m not having the bed to myself tonight” Cass murmured, not without a smile. She was used to Shinx being there, he was pretty used to it as well. For a few years they had been inseparable. She had found him one day out for a walk as if it had been fate. He took a liking to her and he was in need of a home. It was only after encouragement from family that Cassie began to train him and decide to go on a journey.

She picked up her backpack, flung open her room’s door and made her way out. “Come on you, we’re going to get some food” she called to Shinx, who at the mention of food, bolted out of the door. Cassie locked the door and giggled when she saw him waiting for her at the top of the stairs. He called to her loudly and she hurried along. The pair left the building and journeyed out onto the streets. The sky was crimson and there was a slight chill in the air. It was a good job she decided to put a jumper on. She examined the area around her. She knew which way the mine was located; it was evident with spirals of smoke in the distance. Cassie had seen the PokeCentre and the PokeMart on the way to the inn, so it was just the hunt for a restaurant or a café. Thankfully, it didn’t take long to find a small café. It was rustic, and had a number of miners around tables. The teenager debated entering or not, but spotting the odd couple and person her age, she assumed it would be fine.

Shinx found her a table in the corner, avoiding a Cranidos sat by its owner for various reasons. She ordered a ham and cheese panini, a cup of tea and a brownie for herself. They did a selection of Pokemon food, and she thought poffins might be a good option for tonight. She got Shinx a mixture of sweet and sour, as she knew he enjoyed it. For Starly, who remained in her Pokeball for now, she got sweet and mild. Once she had paid, she sat down and released Starly. The little bird Pokemon greeted her with a gentle peck on the leg and quiet cry. It was wholly friendly, which was pleasing. Cassie made sure both Pokemon were eating happily before she started on her own food. She gazed out of the window beside her, taking a bite out of her panini, and felt blessed to have a Shinx that didn’t only protect her and love her, but had the decency to give her a window seat with beautiful view of the outside world.

Matt had just left the mines for the day, it had been another day of hard labor, light knocks to the head, and the foreman's old radio playing oldie tunes through the tunnels. His Sneasal had dug her claws into the front of his work jumpsuit, she was fast asleep after another long day out of her element. The two of them worked not as diggers or another breed of muscled workman, they worked together as the mine's gofers, climbing into small cracks and crevices to retrieve certain specimens, and running objects from one end to the next. It was exhausting work, but it filled his mind constantly, some days he never even thought about Snowpoint. Other days he would see the stalactites and instantly be transported back to the icy city and the painful memories he had there.

He ran his hands through Sneasal's fur, brushing some of the dust out of it. He had found her as a newborn Pokemon outside of the city, she had apparently become separated from her mother and was wandering the snowy fields outside the city. In order to keep her warm he had unzipped his coat and let her stay in there long after they safely reached his home, clinging to the front of his shirt had since been her favorite spot. She had been too young to train while he was on his journey, and though nowadays she was of normal size he had not seriously trained since he released or given away all his other Pokemon, as such she was just barely stronger than the wild pokemon in the area, and her type disadvantage didn't help. He felt guilty about keeping her from her proper home, he had tried to let her go several times, but she always just scampered back up his front and refused to let go.

He decided to walk down to the cafe to get his dinner, which usually consisted of a large bowl of noodles and some water, he needed the energy and liquid to keep up the constant work. It was a similarly spartan meal for Sneasal, he wished he could afford better, but it was the best he could buy on his rather meager salary, the mining had been in jeopardy ever since the Solar Power from Sunnyshore and the Floraroma Windworks' Wind Power had become so popular. Now the mining operations were chiefly scientific, and the town had been getting smaller as miners and their families left.

He walked into the diner still covered in soot, he took a seat at the window bar. The bar had a nice view of the town, or what was left of it. He ordered his usual noodles and water, and Sneasal's usual pokefood and water as well. After the waitress left he began to leaf through a discarded magazine, the main article was a glossy, colorful, piece about the pop idol Lisia's Sinnoh tour, with some testimonies of how amazing her shows were back in Hoenn. Sneasal had taken the stool next to him, though only her head reached above the table, she liked to pretend she was people.

A newcomer walked into the cafe, a trainer by her pokemon, and just starting out as well it would seem, a Starly and a Shinx accompanied her. She probably came for the Gym, not surprising, The Gym and Museum were almost all that was left to the mining town.

The atmosphere in the café/diner was appealing to Cassie; the miners were rugged in their ways but their laughter was what made it so welcoming. The teenager had wolfed down her meal, thankful that it wasn’t her own mediocre cooking. Shinx had devoured his meal similarly, although Starly had not eaten much. “I’ll try you out on dry and mild next time; you don’t seem a fan of sweet” she said, patting the birds head affectionately. Shinx leaped up to sniff around Starly’s bowl, but refused to eat what was left. Cassie thought this quite strange; normally Shinx had a huge appetite.

Shrugging it off, she got out her brand new Pokedex and started fiddling around with it. She knew how to view Starly's moves. Peck, Tackle and Wing Attack. It was certainly something she could work with. She had been concerned Shinx and Starly would not get along due to their typing, but they seemed okay. She scrolled through the various paragraphs of information on Starly, until she heard a smash of crockery.

She turned to find that Shinx had leapt up onto the window bar counter, and in his interest for a young man’s noodles, had knocked the bowl onto the floor. Cassie noticed people were looking at rolling their eyes. In a frenzy of embarrassment she got out of her seat and wondered over to the man, whom she noticed had a Sneasel who Shinx was pestering. Starly had perched herself on Cassie’s empty seat.

“Shinx! You really need to be more careful, you shouldn’t be bothering people like that. Look what you’ve done” Cassie scolded, causing the Electric Pokemon to flatten his ear's against his head and hop down from the counter. She averted her attention to the man, who was closer to her age than she had first thought. “I’m so sorry” she pleaded with an apologetic frown. She rooted around in her pocket for some money. “I’ll replace your meal” she mumbled, digging about for her loose change.
