True Story

  • I just found out how old you are today

I laughed; I was beside myself in fits,
I thought, β€˜How wonderful that he is mine!
And I am his, and he wants me!’
It made me feel flimsy, and silly,
For being so young and for loving you so,
I didn’t mean to laugh at you, but oh--
    You’ll die before I’m a proper grown-up
Now I feel quite sorry, sorry for myself,
To will have lost love before I am old,
And you, to have loved me to death
Love me more, cherish me gravely,
I’m flighty and fickle, I may leave you
Silly you for doting on me! Foolish!
But oh, you couldn’t have known,
I forgive you, come hither, I want to hold you again
