Jasper Tenny was born in the small farming village of Willsden, the youngest of 3 children. Life was modest but pleasant, and Jasper was a happy child. When he was 10, however, tragedy struck. That autumn, near the beginning of the harvest, a ferocious thunderstorm struck. Lightning set the barn ablaze, starting a fire which quickly spread across the fields, destroying almost everything before the rain put it out. Without the means to recover and facing the threat of starvation over the winter, Jasper's family sold what they could, packed what they had left, and sought refuge in the city of Waterdeep.

The change was hard on everyone, but maybe worst on Markus and Ophelia, Jasper's parents. The family traded a farmhouse and verdant fields for a cramped tenement with a roach problem. Money ran out quickly and both parents were forced to take low-wage menial labor jobs. Ophelia's health began to decline rapidly. With so many mouths to feed, the elder children were apprenticed out as quickly as possible, and became estranged from the rest of the family for the length of their training. Jasper, unable to find a proper apprenticeship at his age, instead spent his time wandering through the streets of Waterdeep searching for the sense of freedom and community he had been forced to leave behind. He learned mostly by sitting and watching people--from whom to beg, how to steal, where he could pick up odd jobs for a few extra pennies when his wallet and belly were both empty. Any money left over after food and rent inevitably went toward doctors and medicines to treat Ophelia's failing health.

Ophelia died when Jasper was 17. With no money to pay for a proper funeral, the body was carried to a tomb in the City of the Dead in Waterdeep and a priest of Kelemvor was called to give the funerary rights. It was a terse affair, sadness at the loss replaced by anger directed at each other and at the entire set of circumstances which led to this point. Jasper and Markus fought again over Jasper's inability to get hired through a guild, a result of his years spent as a street rat and petty criminal, and Markus' habit of blowing money on nights of binge drinking. Jasper officially moved out that night, although in practice he had been living elsewhere for some time. The only memento he took was an old tarot card--the magician--which his mom had secretly taken from a fortune teller after getting a reading. There had been three once, one for each child, but the magician was Jasper's and the only one he knew the location of to take.

Jasper initially joined the church of Kelemvor not out of holy devotion, but out of practical necessity. Church assistance programs had offered services--food banks, clothing donations, etc.--which he had grown to rely on as was growing up. They had offered funeral rights when his family could not afford them elsewhere. It was a place which didn't necessarily appreciate his history as a petty criminal, but which did not scorn him because of it. By the time he was an adult the church was a fact of life for him, and with seeming inevitability he was always to be found working in the church's service, eventually helping to run the assistance and outreach programs on which he had relied. Working for the church afforded Jasper a modest life for himself, still poor by any other standard but much better than the life to which he had grown accustomed. It sponsored his ecclesiastical training as well, where he studied the tenets of Kelemvor and began to train as a cleric. When his father finally drank himself to death, when Jasper was 26, he was the one to perform funeral rights and entomb the corpse. Now in his early 30s, Jasper has opted to leave his temple for the life of an adventurer, hoping to amass enough wealth to fund poverty alleviation programs indefinitely.

Also he has a pet rat, Cartwright the Church Mouse.

Hullo!

Character Sheet:

The only thing I see missing here is your extra starting funds. Please roll 1d10 in #dice and add the extra gold to your current money.

Character Backstory:

Reading your background, I'm a little torn. I almost feel criminal might fit since Urchin is more you're a true orphan, but in this case I think it works. Over your character's backstory, you sort of start with criminal, then go urchin, and ultimately would typically be acolyte. Wandering the cities by yourself for most of the time and living in poverty fits Urchin.

Otherwise I feel there's nothing that sticks out as needing to be fixed.
