The Hinterlands
1601628213447.png
A vast, lifeless region that engulfs almost the entirety of the Northern reaches of Altera, the Hinterlands were once the territory of the proud High Elves. The Lichlord's forces first emerged there, at the beginning of the Great War some five-centuries ago. From there, his vast legions of undead spread like locusts, razing the entirety of the forests to the ground in their dread conquest. From thereon, the lands became the Hinterlands, a vast space blanketed by a thick, necrotic mist, that is only spreading further with each passing moment.

The Hinterlands are inhospitable to the living, with the mist consuming any mortal foolish enough to set foot upon the no-man's land. As such, it has become a hellish paradise for those 'forsaken by the gods', or in other words, undead. Settlements and villages purely consisting of the unliving are found scattered across the region, as well as some living, who have been given 'charms' that render them immune to the corroding mist. Though the bleak visage of the Hinterlands, it is notable that many of the settlements that have managed to thrive within it are rather lively.

What remains of the Elven Forests of Tal'daran is a lifeless husk of the once radiant glory of the High Elves, sovereigns of wisdom and magic. When the Lichlord first appeared in the world of Altera, Tal'daran was the first to fall to his undead legions, and irreversibly corrupted by the deathly mist that followed. High Elves soon became but refugees and their once glorious cities have become naught but fairy tales, faint memories a proud race brought to its knees still feverishly cling to. High Elves have become rare over the centuries. 'Pure-blood' elves are scarce, with most 'elves' being half-breeds. Those whose blood is of a 'higher purity' are valued as slaves as possessions, for their magic affinity (to be used as mana batteries) or their beauty (to be used as fucktoys by rich aristocrats).

Currently, the former champion of mortalkind, and fallen hero, Lance Xyth has been assigned by the Lich King himself to undo the corrosion of Tal'daran, and to prevent the further spread of the deathly mist - a fruitless endeavor that has been ongoing for four centuries. Unfortunately, it seems impossible, as the spreading of the mist is due to a horrid creature that has long made the underground of Tal'daran its lair - Broodmother Zathraxxia, vile mother of the Deathweaver swarm. As long as the Broodmother lives, she will continue to emanate the vile miasma that consumes all life, until Altera is no more.

It seems as though the Lich King himself has little interest in such complications, it seems. The fate of the living is none of his concern, after all.

An ivory tower wrought of bone, that extends far into the clouds above. Old legends of the Elves claim that the Bonespire simply emerged from the ground without warning, and from it, the legions of the dead poured out. Coincidentally, the Lichlord made himself known to the world, not long after.

The Bonespire serves as one of the Lich King's many 'strongholds', and is currently under the management of the 'Earl of Death', Lance Xyth. Over the centuries under Lance's care, a thriving village of the dead has gathered around the Spire, with a surprising number of the living who too, have settled amongst the dead. It is in close proximity to the Deathweaver's subterranean systems. As such, the area often becomes a warzone as both the undead forces and the Deathweavers seek the other's annihilation.

Otherworlders may recognize the structure as a dungeon from Yggdrasil, teeming with high-level undead. Though, it seems that this dungeon had long been conquered, and its boss slain.
