History
In an alternate-reality 18th century, three kingdoms make up the European continent. Viracia, to the west, is known as a kingdom of knowledge and artistic expression. It contains the oldest libraries in the world, with texts dating back centuries. It is a land of scholars, not fighters. Viracia has the weakest military of the three kingdoms, and often has to rely on its smaller allies in other parts of the world to fight their battles for them.
Aldissa, to the north, is a newly established, inexperienced kingdom. Originally a colony of Wallachia, Aldissa declared independence fifty years before. Surrounded on all sides by ocean, it has the biggest oceanic fleet of the three kingdoms. It is known for its beautiful architecture, agriculture, and medicine. Even though the ocean serves as a natural defense for Aldissa, it also makes it more expensive to import resources. Of the three kingdoms, Aldissa has the worst economy.
Wallachia, to the east, is the oldest of the three kingdoms. It has the largest land-based military and is known for its innovation and being self-reliant. Wallachia is seen as a kingdom of aristocracy. Even so, it has no reliable allies. At least, none that would lend their military or support in a conflict.

The Great War
The war between Wallachia, Aldissa, and Viricia originally started when Wallachia refused to acknowledge Aldissa's independent status. At first, the war was without bloodshed. It was fought through diplomats and passive-aggressive shows of power. It escalated to an all-out war when a Wallachian ship sunk off the coast of Aldissa. Whether Aldissa attacked the ship or it sunk because of human-error didn't matter. Wallachia declared war.
Viracia was forced into the conflict when the fighting spilled over their border and several Viracian civilians were killed in the crossfire. The war stretched on for sixteen years. In a desperate attempt to stop the fighting, a shaky alliance was formed between the three kingdoms. As a public show of friendship and peace, the royals from each kingdom would be betrothed to each other. The heir to the Wallachian throne and his betrothed would stay in Wallachia, the heir to the Aldissan throne and her betrothed would return to Aldissa once they were wed, and so on.
