Basic Body Structure of a Kryx
Name: Nu Rho
Alias: Jinx
Age: 24 years
Race: Kryx
Gender: Female
Occupation: Master Thief
Home world: Kryx 19/Mor s' Via
The Kryx are an elusive, although usually peaceful race. They live on a series of planets, 20 some in all, known to the rest of the galaxy as the Kryxian Sector. The Kyrx call the group Via, a word that has no direct translation to other languages, but means something like “heavens that have descended and separated.” Kryx are a simple culture of farmers and tradesmen, and are generally very well liked by other races. They avoid getting involved in outside conflicts and resolve their own through a series of community councils, with a surprising lack of hard feelings. They seem to have achieved a near-utopia, but no one knows how.
Each plantet of the series has its own geography and subculture. They are named accordingly, and their names are often placed in front of "s' Via," identifying it as "of Via." Nu is from the planet referred to as Kryx 19 by others, and Mor s' Via by the Kryx. Mor can be taken to mean “tree” or “forest.” The planet is covered with extremely tall, thick trees. Kryx on Mor s' Via make their living by harvesting the limbs of these trees (they are far too big to be cut down) and some subsistence farming. These Kryx are distinguished by the slight variation in their hand and feet, making them very good climbers. They love the sky, and place a heavier emphasis on it than other Kryx. There is little plant life other than the trees and what is grown for food, and the only animals are small, furry creatures, all with adaptations to be climbers. Sometimes, these are tamed and treated as outdoor pets, but a Kryx would never trap an animal. On the surface, they are a simple, loving race. There is, however, a slight dark side. Communities are very tight-knit, with an almost imperceivable bureaucracy. If anything goes wrong, or if anyone steps out of line, it is dealt with swiftly and silently. Because life must follow its peaceful, predictable pattern.
Appearance:
Kryx are lithe beings with smooth, porpoise-like skin. They can walk on all fours or stand up, although they usually walk upright when not working. Standing upright, they are about 6 feet tall, with a tail about 5 feet. They have four pairs of ears, a broad mouth, and a prehensile tail. Most Kryx on Mor s' Via are brown or green in color, while other planets vary based on their geography, but none are very flashy.
Nu, on the other hand, was born a dark gray color, like soot, with faint black stripes and a slightly lighter underbelly. Her eyes are bright blue. Over the years, she has acquired a scar across her left shoulder, and one across the bottom side of her tail, and wears a belt to carry her tools.
Personality:
Nu is first a Kryx. They are habitually closed off and almost rudely professional with any not their kind. For Nu, her “kind” is the kind of being that earns her trust. Even Kryx don’t get an automatic pass. She is innately secretive, and usually pretty silent, but she does enjoy the company of other beings. Nu has been known to laugh at jokes, and to join in spontaneous singing if familiar with the song. She likes being that are not Kryx, quite a bit.
This liking does not, however, equate friendship or even begrudging loyalty. She is for herself first, and holds onto her pride stubbornly. She has been known to turn down a very well-paying job if it doesn’t appeal to her, without an explanation. Many assume that someone of her disposition must have an explosive temper when angered, but to be angry is not in her abilities as a Kryx. She may be selfish and proud, but never angry.
Equipment: Nu’s toolbelt houses a basic handgun, for protection. Her specialized tools include a device of her own design used to open locked doors with electronic locks, complete with a set of picks for the physical kind. She wears a pair of goggles, with night and heat vision settings, and she’s working on getting something to see through walls. She always carries a length of rope, just to be safe.
Special skills:
Nu first capitalized on her natural abilities. She is perhaps the most nimble and quick Kryx out there, and has an astonishing ability to move silently.
She has learned the ins and outs of most common and high-end security measures, but she hasn’t forgotten the basics of a lockpick. Her hacking skills are adequate and always improving.
She is very good at thinking on her feet, which she would view as the most important skill.
Racial Trait: Swift, silent movement and incredible nimbleness. Kryx are surprisingly light and balanced for their size, making them some of the quietest beings in the galaxy. They also have very supple skeletons, making it very easy to maneuver their bodies through tricky spots.
Bio:
Being born with different coloring started Nu’s life off a little rocky. She was aware of the odd looks she got sometimes, and she was even more aware of the older Kryx that seemed to always be checking up on her. At first she thought of him as a kind, distant grandparent of sorts. She tried her best to keep the Kryxian attitude of all’s-well-that-ends-well, but she found herself to be more prideful and selfish than her peers. She liked things, and she liked things that belonged to others. But as long as she hid it, life could go on.
Hide it she did, for quite a while. As a youth, she was the picture of happiness, despite her darker color. Things did not go so well when she hit maturity.
For one year, the young Kryx court one another in the most polite of ways. It is amiable, universal flirtation between all eligible males and females, with a very strict but unspoken rule against splitting off or choosing early. Somehow, everyone ends up happy, and they go on to build their happy homes and have happy families. Each Kryx was assigned a job according to their greatest skill, to participate in their little utopia and to further it with their own offspring.
But not Nu. That grandfatherly Kryx, the one who had always been just at the edge of her life, ended her world. Seems like someone had noticed all the little things, trinkets and toys and bits of money, that had ended up in her possession over the years. Before she knew what was happening, she was ushered off her planet. No Kryx even knew, so they couldn’t care where she ended up, or if she survived. Well, she ended up in one of those seedy areas that harden its residences, and she did survive. Doing what she had done best all along: stealing.
