the Seculars.

Open

The Seculars are the first house found at Nightshade, the founder Estrella Gloriana was a Secular herself. Members of the house use witchcraft, “traditionally, the exercise or invocation of alleged supernatural powers to control people or events, practices typically involving sorcery or magic.”, as defined in the school’s textbooks.

The branch was almost eradicated during the Witch Trials, but it’s surviving members (Estrella included) banded together to open the school shortly afterwards.

The Seculars rely heavily on the earth and it’s resources to draw their power forth, using spell work and runes to get their desired affect. Their magic does not simply come from within themselves, though some Seculars do have some inherent abilities. Their work is all learned from spell books and word of mouth, passed down through generations.

the Elementals.

The Elementals.
The second house added to Nightshade’s vast halls, the Elementals harvest the energy of the elements to do their work. With powers that present themselves in a variety of forms—fire, water, air, and earth being just a few—the group is a powerhouse of diverse and immense magical ability.

Recognized formally by Nightshade’s Board of Directors in 1901, the house has long been revered to produce only the finest of students.

the Shifters.

The Shifters
are Nightshades third house, the Shifters are the school’s wildest branch. Able to transform from flash and blood to fang and fur, or wings and scales, the Shifting ability has long been revered.

While not all shifters are able to complete a Full Bodied Shift, the power is still admired and can be quite useful.

With a reputation for throwing the school’s wildest (unauthorized) parties, the house has gotten into its fair amount of trouble since it’s integration in the early 1920’s.

the Psyches.

The Psyches
are the fourth formally recognized house at Nightshade, the Psyches power comes from within their own mind.

The Seers, empaths and astral projectors of the group, the Psyches have their power rooted in the mind. A highly adaptable and underestimated group, users of the art are not to be discounted despite the less physical nature of their power.

Assimilated in 1933, just before World War II, the Psyches are the scholars of the school. With a deep understanding and respect of science and human psychology, the Psyches are making great strides in their research behind the connection between the brain and what gives certain people the ability to wield magic.

the Celestials.

The Celestials
are the sixth and final house at Nightshade, introduced in 1995, the Celestials are a starry eyed bunch who have rapidly made a name for themselves in the school.

Ruled by the sun, moon and stars, the Celestials are the newest group to be added to the school once more research on the art had been conducted. With a vast pool of abilities, the sky is hardly the limit for this bunch.

The power of their abilities fluctuates with whatever celestial object it’s tied to, ebbing and flowing like a tide.

The Shades
are the fifth house residing at Nightshade, and founded in 1978 upon the induction of Principal Kareem Hearthstone, a Shade himself.

Masters of the dark arts and wielders of shadows, the Shades power is in that of mystery and darkness. Ruled by the night, the Shades are a powerful and notorious class.

The group as a whole tends to keep to themselves, and are very secretive about their studies and practices.

Their powers are hard to describe and different than any other class.

Vampires have a good amount of natural strengths. Speed, strength, along with compulsion and natural dexterity.

This makes their hand-to-hand combat quite decent and they excel in classes that involve physical aspects. Liv's never been one to use her powers for personal gain-- other than compulsion the few times she's used it for... less than moral reasons.

weaknesses
Slade Root was a plant derived from the 1800s and was believed to provide protection from the supernatural. Most assumed it was a myth until it was used against a vampire, skin-to-skin contact had burnt them much like the sun did back then.

Supernatural fanatics had experimented on Slade Root until they were able to extract a poisonous liquid that was deadly to vampires. Now, evolution had them susceptible to be harmed, weaken, or in far worse cases such as multiple injections even death for the natural vampire.

Beyond Slade Root. There was the "myth" that vampires couldn't handle the sun. Witchcraft had devised a plan in the earlier days to provide a daylight ring for those who couldn't be in direct sunlight. Without said ring-- vampires could become severely harmed or even burnt to death in stood in the sun for an endless amount of time.

Liv chooses to consume animal blood instead of human, it slightly satisfies her craving but ultimately weakens her in all aspects.

Many people would describe Livanna as... wild.

She's optimistic, energetic, a complete breath of fresh air-- if you will. She wasn't always like this. She used to be fairly quiet, her soft voice was nothing like the shrieking squeal you'd hear when she's excited to see you today.

She's never had much of a childhood, many people would consider that as a reason for her immaturity and short attention span-- hence her constant need for fun and a decent distraction.

Liv lacks confidence, but she's kept a pretty good façade of showing otherwise.

She's naïve, an utterly terrible liar-- especially if something's on her chest, Livanna would have to get it out by any means necessary. Conflict causes her a great deal of stress until the issue it's resolved. Liv is extremely sensitive and seeks validation in almost anyone she meets.

In shorter terms, Livanna has the personality of an eight year old on a sugar high.

Growing up

Livanna Moore is the daughter of Silas Moore, the infamous blues singer of the 90s. He was a man who was fawned over by his beauty and shocking inability to age. His voice carried him further than his compulsion did and vowed not to accept anything from his parents who had more connections than he could ever dream of.

The Moores owned half of the nightlife of Los Angeles. Nightclubs, exclusive restaurants, and hidden speakeasys that date back to the fifties.

The family goes back decades– a family that mainly consisted of vampires. Although it wasn't entirely rare for a vampire to marry off with a human. Usually said human would be turned before the wedding– that way their DNA was altered before a child was conceived.

Silas didn’t want to turn her. But Ella persisted– she didn’t want to be married and mortal. If he wasn’t growing old with her, what was the point?

His parents, both pure-blood vampires didn’t approve of her mother. She was nothing more than an art teacher when her father had bumped into her after a show. After endless apologies, they had eventually fallen in love and a few years later they were engaged. Silas’s parents had never given them their blessing and in return, he slowly and slowly cut contact with them, not bothering to invite them to the wedding.

Ella, her mother, had a hard time transitioning to vampirism.

Typically, it’s difficult for new vampires to control their cravings but Ella was… a different case entirely. She'd set into these "episodes" that seemed to play into a manic state. Which was dangerous for the supernatural-- but more so for the mortal lives their recklessness caused.

Silas couldn’t contact his parents for help, he didn’t have it in him to contact the few vampires he’d known in fear that a rogue vampire might turn up some alarms to hunters, supernatural “fanatics” or worse and they decided to turn her into the elders.

She’d come close to losing her humanity so many times he grew worried that he was losing her entirely. Silas knew a friend, he wasn’t a vampire, but he was fairly experienced with the supernatural. Ella wasn’t fond of the treatments. No vampire would be comfortable with multiple injections of slade root burning in their veins every week. It was given in small amounts not to harm her permanently.

They weren’t sure if it’d work. She was switched to animal blood earlier on and it continued to make her sick.

Surprisingly, the treatments had dimmed a good amount of the thirst she was craving. Slowly by slowly, these treatments began to take a toll on Ella.

Physically, she’d grown so weak it seemed impossible she was a vampire in the first place. Silas began to recognize Ella for who she was and not who he had mistakenly turned her into. It was only when she fell pregnant most of her strength returned, the baby’s DNA provided her some of the strength she was missing, those nerves were burned by the shade root being injected had healed some.

Pregnancy was the easiest she'd had it. Those nine months went by like a blink of an eye, in bliss and without the interruption of an episode.

After the birth of Livanna, her mother quickly fell back into her old ways, a newfound sense of strength, a stronger compulsion, hearing, speed– they weren't sure what caused it– it was possible that because they had stopped the treatments in fear of harming the child, most of her cravings returned stronger than ever.

Ella had a trail of bodies that gained the attention of the council soon enough and an investigation was launched. She was as good as gone, leaving Silas behind after his many failed attempts to control his wife. Silas's parents had forced themselves back into his life after learning about the birth of his child.

He fell into a darker place after "losing" Ella, what happened to her after the council had taken over her case... it's unknown. Considered on a need-to-know basis, and the council didn't believe they needed to inform the man who had turned her.

Unhappy accidents
Livanna was singing by the time she could talk, and her father had seen himself, taking advantage of her natural gifts before she had a say.

Singing lessons, piano lessons, guitar, you name it. Silas was a very powerful figure in the production world, his connections were endless-- and soon enough he had set Liv up with Divinity Records, a record label that was more than willing to sign a Moore on.

By the time she was fourteen, she was living with her grandparents much to the dismay of her father, and was an artist in Los Angeles, CA.

TW: SA, emotional abuse and substance abuse heavily implied

Alike many pop stars, there was rumors of substance abuse as the years went on and they weren't entirely wrong. Liv partook in an endless amount of drugs but vampires had a stronger tolerance-- it was difficult to get one addicted to a substance.

The drugs were introduced by her manager, Liam.

The two had a very... interesting relationship to say the least. His job was to make sure she didn't embarrass the label land shed rarely had any creative control over her music. Everything needed to be ran by him or the board-- she needed permission to do the smallest thing.

His abuse had started early on, controlling, and using her in every way possible. Despite Liv's strengths, usually, vampires didn't fully develop until they mid-adolescence.

She didn't tell anyone. Her father was usually gone and only visited on weekends-- and if word had gotten out to her grandparents, they'd force her out of the spotlight.

The music scene isn't what they wanted for Silas, and it wasn't something they wanted for their granddaughter. Being in the spotlight was careless, fifty years from now, it was unlikely they could come back from the questions the public would raise about them being ageless or worse, caught in the act unknowingly, unable to compel the witness before they got the story out and that was that.

Her cravings and fangs had fully developed by the time she was sixteen, Liam had reached for the buttons on her blouse and something... inside her just snapped. Whether it was hatred or survival instinct that kicked in... she had called her father minutes later, unable to control her sobs long enough to explain what happened.

Silas walked in the recording studio and the room was covered with blood that wasn't her own.

The academy
Livanna was sent to Nightshade Academy by her grandparents, the gossip and tabloids had labeled it as drug addiction. Sent to a boarding school to better and rehabilitate herself. Her manager, unfortunately, had lived and was compelled to believe that whatever happened was an accident and he didn't bother to see the culprit.

He never got any answers.

Sophomore year was interesting to say the least. Livanna had met so many different people, different powers-- different capabilities. And that's when she realized she didn't know enough about the supernatural community despite being in it.

She knew about sirens, empaths-- and of course, werewolves, but the list didn't end there.

She just knew more about werewolves because of her grandparents and their endless warnings not to get involved with them. The feud between vampires and werewolves went back centuries over hunting grounds.

Nowadays, the supernatural species are much more reformed, sophisticated and intend to become climb the social ranks, judging each other by the strength of their businesses and prosperity. Just because society evolved doesn't mean that the feuds aren't any less dangerous, subtle threats are always hinted. In fact, a fair amount of the elites werewolf families-- or packs as they'd put it, have a safe amount of slade root growing incase they'd ever need it.

She's always been warned about getting involved with them. Livanna grew up in the spotlight and was trained to humanity, there was so much she didn't know about her supernatural peers enough to feel like she didn't quite fit in with the rest of her class.

With her cravings growing stronger, the few rumors that surrounded her when she first arrived were piled up and she was perceived as dangerous to some. Anyone who knew Liv wouldn't believe them for a second.

But anyone who truly knew Liv, knew what she was capable of-- especially with the manic episodes she had experienced over break. She was treading a very dangerous line and the last thing she wanted to become was her mother.

Or in simpler terms, a monster.

Despite their familial ties and history practically designed for them to despise one another, Livanna was quickly entranced by the werewolf. His confidence drew her in, his looks captivated her and his personality had her already intoxicated within minutes of meeting.

They started dating near the end of Junior year against their better judgement, at first-- to Axel, it was a way to spite his parents, but Liv had fell first and ultimately too quickly. She wasn't quite sure if it was the music, the spark between them or the way their personalities meshed Liv felt a connection to him unlike any other. Their family found out later that summer and they were forced to end things.

All contact between them was cut and both were closely monitored.

Her family had assumed that he had graduated already and sent her off for senior year months later.

You know what they say, absence only made the heart grow fonder.

Esme's always had an interest in dark magic. Growing up without the abilities her sibling had, caused her to delve into witchcraft to mimic his powers to the best of her ability. Elemental magic had never been her strong suit-- nor the normality of witchcraft.

Her strengths was found in rituals, blood magic, voodoo, with her extensive knowledge of languages, this led her to understand much of the old text that was provided in older spells, also known as "forbidden magic" in the academy, she often practiced dark magic despite the many warnings of her physical/mental health deteriorating.

Before Junior year... she had failed most of her classes due to her inability to conjure some of the most simplest spells. Now, Esme's stronger than ever and now has the ability to mimic her brother's shadow abilities to an extent.

She loves showing it off.

Esme becomes profoundly weak. Nose bleeds, soreness, and fainting are all common signs that a witch is under extreme stress due to the magic she's siphoning from the earth as a normal mortal could only handle so much.

A "conscience" of sorts has been the main aggressor of her ideas, usage of magic, spells and caused Esme to become a tad more argumentative.

One by one, she slew her fears, and then planted a flower garden over their graves.

Esmeralda is the definition of mischievous. There's always something up her sleeve and she rarely does anything without reason. She's stubborn, impulsive, judgmental and closed-off. Growing up with an obvious lack of powers had formed a cloud of insecurity that hides under her many layers that very few can uncover.

Most of her parents-- and the school's attention was placed on her older brother, when she's at the center of attention, it's usually because she had done something "wrong" or at the very least, she derived a plan to humiliate one of the lesser kids at the academy, pull a prank on a teacher, or simply cause havoc.

Esme found a natural high from creating chaos. Most of her incidents were a desperate attempt to have her parents look her way-- typically, she was given a slap on the wrist for her schemes, the Hearthstones convinced that she was acting out in result of being a "late bloomer." She's confident, humorous, seductive and prides herself on social status.

She's loyal to the right people, has the possiblity to extend a smile or a compliment to those she believes deserves so, but don't take her kindness for friendship, as she likes to put it...

"I'm a decent friend, but a better enemy."

Her parents favored Ezrael, he was the golden child, the one who did no wrong, who was their heir to success and continued the family's bloodline of powerful abilities that he showed off any chance he could get.

Ezra can only be described as a piece of work. He’s snarky, bold and doesn’t have a filter, tending to say whatever he wants without thinking first. He has a penchant for dark humor and sarcasm, which can get in the way during serious situations. His lack of a filter has also landed him and his friends in a few sticky situations, but he has a hard time taking accountability for how his big mouth gets them in trouble.

He comes across as confident, bordering on arrogant, and doesn’t like to keep people close, scared to lose them. He’s broody and prone to mood swings and likes to distance himself at times. This isn’t anything personal, it’s a self defense mechanism he developed to avoid becoming too close to the people that matter to him the most. It never works.

Despite all of this, he can be sweet and is always honest unless it comes down to something about him. He’s honestly just trying to figure everything out and feels a little helpless, unsure of how to navigate adulthood much less having mystical powers.

He cares too much and feels too deeply and he hates it. He wishes he could just turn his emotions off. Turn his powers off. He hates the responsibility. When people see good, they expect good and he doesn’t feel very worthy all of the time.

He’s responsible and mature, always looking to live up to the high expectations his parents have set for him.

Powers

Ezra’s powers manifest as tangible shadows, which he uses in a number of ways. Some such living shadows are spirits and entities that he’s able to communicate with, though sometimes this is out of his control.

early life

Ezrael was the first born son of Mariana and Rafael Hearthstone, two of Nightshade’s most famous alumni. The grandson of Kareem Hearthstone, big things were expected of little Ezra from a young age, who’d had a natural grip on his powers since he was a toddler.

He lived a very high class childhood, as would be expected of the son of two socialites, attending various fancy private schools while his family employed only the best magical tutors to help him with his gifts.

Overview

Kore is open and bubbly, constantly accompanied by the sound of her own laughter. There isn’t much time where she doesn’t have a smile on her face or a kind word or joke to tell you. She’s carefree and positive, and has an infectious optimism about her that can either be annoying or endearing, depending on the person.

She’s talkative and energetic, but not hyperactive or disruptive. She’s an excellent listener and is known to give solid advice, as she pauses to think through.

Kore is hardworking and dedicated to her friend, family and schooling, spending most of her days providing and caring for them while maintaining the grades she’s worked so hard to achieve. She is very stubborn, and has an upbeat sense of humor that is given frequently. She is very empathetic and selfless, willing to sacrifice anything for the people she loves. She loves painting and art, and she sees the world in vivid colors, light, and shadows. She’s a tad socially awkward, but she loves people all the same.

early life

Kore was born in Pine Creek to Nightshade Alumnis, Jared and Magnolia Kane. Brought up in the world of the magical, Kore was well prepared for her entrance to Nightshade and spent her childhood in a smaller private school several kilometers away meant for the magically gifted.

Spending so long from her parents, Kore was a naturally independent and mature child. She never caused much trouble and applied herself dutifully to her studies, excelling in school.

Every child needs their parents, however, and she found herself missing a parental figure actively in her life from as young a age as seven.

later life

As Kore aged, she grew more fiercely independent and dedicated to her studies, as it was all she knew. She quickly rose to the top of her class, and it was no wonder she was accepted into Nightshade’s advanced studies course her freshman year.

Until the murders began occurring, Kore’s high school journey could be called anything but fascinating, but when her favorite professor and personal mentor Ms. Hayley Ashfield first went missing and then showed up staked to the front gates, it was a wake up call.

She’d had a meeting set with the teacher the night she’d disappeared, but hadn’t thought much of it when the older woman hadn’t been in her study at the agreed upon time, chalking it up to the teacher simply being busy.

When the school closed in the spring, forcing her to return to her family home during the summer, Kore wasn’t sure how to interact with her family and instead spent the summer locked in her room, researching everything she could to just maybe figure out what had happened to Ms. Ashfield.

Overview

Aspen is, to put it lightly, is a trouble maker. He’s loud and disruptive, energetic and a silver tongued liar. He’s a master manipulator and tends to use people to get exactly what he wants from them. He’s nosy and likes to be in everyone’s business, his Raven form making it easy to slip in and out of places unnoticed.

He has a penchant for gambling and card games that could rival that of a middle aged drunk—and the drinking habits to match. He’s an adrenaline junkie and loves the rush that gambling or doing something dangerous—like jumping off of Nightshade’s roof his freshman year when he couldn’t shift, hoping the fear would trigger it. It did, but it was a stupid idea.

As are most of his ideas.

He’s charming and flirtatious, never taking anything too seriously. He’s always cracking some wise ass joke that’s usually only funny to a select audience—mostly himself, if he’s being honest. He’s awful in school, constantly ‘forgetting’ his homework and skipping classes, choosing instead to go galavanting through the school grounds doing whatever he pleases.

His knack for trouble making isn’t all there is to him, however. Aspen proves to be kind to those who choose to befriend him, and is loyal to a fault, often stealing little trinkets or gifts to give his friends. He’s generally outgoing and likes people, but has a hard time making friends that trust him.

He’s deadly smart, despite his inability to apply himself in school, and is always one step ahead of the next person. He has a case of sticky fingers, and if you’re an ass to him, chances are your valuables will be going missing.

Powers and Abilities

As a Shifter, the majority of his magical power goes into his transformation from human to raven. Full blooded shifters are rare, and neither of his parents (as far as he knew between their drinks) possessed the ability. He also finds some interest in spellwork and has gambled for information on their work, having several Seculars teach him their craft. He’s taken a great interest in magical deals and has become quite versed in them.

early life

Born in Massachusetts to a professional poker player and a waitress (and drunk), Aspen’s childhood was nothing short of…interesting. From the moment he could walk, talk and read, Aspen’s father had taught him all there was to know about card games and betting—on all manners of things, like horse races and sporting events and even the lottery!—and he quickly grew really good at it.

His mother had a drinking habit and usually slept the days away, leaving Aspen in the living and watchful eyes of his father, after school. It was a wonder his father hasn’t divorced the woman years ago, but he stayed for his son.

Aspen wasn’t the greatest in school, not because he didn’t understand the material, it was simply that the material was of no interest to him. He made friends easily, teaching his fellow classmates the card games his father has taught him at recess, swindling them for snacks.

later life

As Aspen grew a bit older, his mothers habits eventually grew abusive, the woman taking out her anger in drunken bouts of rage on both young Aspen and his father.

It grew to the point where his father, tired of it all, up and left. There was a fight for custody, that ultimately his mother won, leaving Aspen stuck with her. His father left without a trace after that, never calling or writing.

Aspen blamed himself for his father leaving.

So did Aspen’s mother.

Eventually eighth grade rolled around, and one night Aspen’s mother scared him so badly he’d ended up shifting for the first time in front of her. Thankfully the woman was too drunk to remember the event.

Thinking he was crazy until he got the admission letter from Nightshade later that summer, Aspen finally had his golden ticket. He’d be moving to Ireland and escaping his mother finally.

His first year at Nightshade went as you might expect, as Aspen fought more internal demons than he knew he had, at the same time as being introduced to a whole new magical world, one he hadn’t even known existed until just weeks before. He partied to drown his emotions, and grew to love smoking. He got up to no good, making friends and causing trouble wherever he went.

He still doesn’t feel quite okay, but nightshade feels more like home to him than home ever did.

At surface-level, Veronika appears just as prim and proper as she so often pretends to be. Though she’d been gifted at birth with the same curls her twin brother sports, she views them as a burden more than anything, opting to keep her hair styled in neat waves instead. Her choice clothing aesthetic is very preppy, bordering on something far too professional for someone still in their teens—blouses and dress pants are a staple in her wardrobe, as are the occasional sweater vest and pleated skirt combo. No matter the outfit, it wouldn’t be complete without her signature black platform loafers to match the dark color scheme she’s adopted for herself.

Veronika’s small stature can be misleading for those that haven’t interacted with her before. Despite her mousy build, she’s a force to be reckoned with—not only has she perfected the art of giving death glares with her already-piercing eyes, but she’s a lot stronger than she looks. Even on the days when she’s not at her best—paler than usual, with dark circles resting beneath her bottom lash line from using her powers too much—she still pulls herself together just enough to scare off anyone ready to offer their pity.

It all started with a ball.

Well, arguably, it started at Veronika’s birth into the world, but the ball set things into motion.

Children are messy, and she and Varian were no exception. They left toys out when and where they pleased with little regard to future consequences until one day, Veronika reaped a rather big one. While bounding down the long, spiral staircase leading from the second story to the entry hall, she was halfway down when her foot fell on a stray ball that had been discarded. She tumbled the rest of the way, landing at the bottom in a bloody, bruised, and battered heap.

A red trail dripped along her hairline, puddling on the floor beneath her head as Veronika fought to remain conscious, her eyes trained on the ceiling until she found to her surprise that she was somewhere else.

Veronika was still staring upwards, but her vision was blurry, and the ceiling she was looking at was not the one in her home. Here, the lighting was too bright, and to her right, a machine beeped in a steady rhythm. The sheets were stiff against her legs, and when she reached a hand up, the gash on her forehead was rigid from where it had been stitched shut.

The sound of her mother’s voice snapped Veronika out of the trance, and all at once, she was back in the floor of the Hawthorne house. Mrs. Hawthorne recognized the signs—that distant gaze at the presence of blood, the confusion in her daughter’s eyes—and knew what Veronika was capable of, the magic that had been awoken within her. It was only a matter of time before that skill was being exploited.

Over time, Veronika learned to control her power of Hematomancy, much to her parents delight. Her grandfather had possessed the same gift, one that the family had utilized in many an underhanded “business” deal—for a price, any diplomat or mafia kingpin could know the future of their leadership, if only they were willing to face the risk of unmentioned consequences later—but after his passing shortly after the twins’ birth, that particular speciality had been put to rest with him. Now, though, it seemed as if the door of opportunity was opening again.

At a mere twelve years old, Veronika was being forcefully ushered into hushed, dark rooms full of government officials, crime bosses, and military leaders to grant them insight to their endeavors. All the while she was sworn to secrecy as she quietly set into motion social uproars to the unknowing fool that sought out a Hawthorne’s guidance.

As for the Hawthornes? They were never on the receiving end of these consequences—it was an unspoken knowledge that they were tied to these happenings, though their names were never thrown about. After all, it was damning evidence enough that these high-status individuals had turned to the aid of dark magic, and they never wanted it brought to the light if they could avoid it.

While in the care of Nightshade Academy, Veronika follows in her family’s footsteps, though much more willingly now that she’s the one calling the shots.

She would help people, yes, but only if there was something in it for her as well, whether that be money, favors, or a temporary alliance for the sake of gaining something from them in the future.

Only an idiot hopes to make a deal with a Hawthorne and make it out unscathed.

Or someone who was just plain desperate, and Jason fit that bill. He turned to Veronika for help shortly before his untimely—not to mention mysterious—death, claiming that someone (or something) was hunting him and that he wanted to know how to stop it. After performing the ritual to summon a vision, she didn’t quite find the answers Jason was asking for.

Instead of a solution to his problem, Veronika saw his demise, along with a mysterious page written in a language she couldn’t understand, one side of it jagged as if it had been ripped from its original source. When she at last opened her eyes to be met with Jason’s fearful ones, she opted to lie, telling him that she’d seen nothing—her visions weren’t always predictable, and her usual method for bringing them on hadn’t worked. He was nervous enough as it was, and Veronika couldn’t find it within herself to tell him of his quickly approaching fate, given how unpreventable it was—she hadn’t even seen who had caused it, or a clear depiction of where he was.

What still haunts Veronika about this now, though, is that her visions tend to tell her what she needs to know most, so what had it been trying to tell her?
Veronika is the picture perfect example of what a Hawthorne is—cold and calculated by nature, charming and well-mannered when it serves her, but a stone-hearted bitch when it doesn’t. She looks after herself first and foremost—sometimes Varian, when she’s feeling generous—and doesn’t care how her choices could potentially effect others in a negative way as long as things work out according to her own agenda. She’s been known to get close to people for the sole purpose of using them for personal gain—“keep your friends close but your enemies closer” takes on a new meaning when one prefers enemies to friendship—only to stab them in the back once the opportunity presents itself.

In a way, there’s some validity in Veronika’s habit of keeping people at bay. In the Hawthorne household, love isn’t exactly a thing that flows freely through its many winding hallways—the children are taught that emotion shows weakness, a sentiment that has been drilled into Veronika for as long as she can remember. It’s easier, she’s found, to not let people in at all—to only show the part of herself she wants them to see—rather than risk an attachment that could get her in trouble further down the line.

Truly, this is rooted in a place of insecurity and fear, though if anyone were to suggest such a thing to Veronika, she would deny it, at the very least. She’s afraid of failure, and what would happen if she’s no longer able to live up to the standards her parents have set for her. She’s been a firsthand witness to the way in which her brother has been treated for years, remaining silent to avoid facing her family’s wrath. She does anything she can to come out on top if it means remaining in their amicable graces for fear of what would become of her if she’s suddenly deemed not good enough for the Hawthorne name.

Ellie was born into magic, raised by her family and community of magic-users who hide their gifts in plain sight. A traveling carnival may not seem like the best atmosphere for a child, but that is how Ellie grew. Although she was only given a basic education there, she learned about the Magical world from the performers, game & ride operators, and food vendors who work the carnival. Poppy has a muted, subdued presence that can make her easy to overlook and even easier to walk all over. She’s soft spoken, diplomatic, caring, and thoughtful in her work and her interactions with others. Poppy has a serene disposition with a lack of self-consciousness and non-conformist attitude that allows her to remain unflappable, rarely feeling anxious or stressed. She has an uncanny way of making people uncomfortable with her blunt honesty and apt observations on their personal and social lives that seem to manifest out of nowhere. Poppy’s empathic abilities affect both her magic and her way of thinking, hyper aware of the feelings of those around her, over time this skill has evolved and formed into an eerie ability to predict incidents and emotional events that have not yet passed. She always had an interest in tarot cards and crystal balls as a medium of harnessing her power but now it seems that even the slightest amount of effort grants Poppy with a fuzzy vision of the future, one she would have to sit down and decrypt to make any sense of, which most of the time she doesn’t fancy doing.

Poppy is not lazy per-se but has an absent-minded, distracted nature that lends itself to her abandoning of projects, trains of thoughts, home-work and occasionally people. Poppy was born in Donegal, Ireland to Finn and Daisy Sevrin, an older couple who already had two sons of 15 and 18 years old. The family home that had been passed down through the generations, situated by the coast in the countryside, steeped in the magic of her ancestors. Her parents both came from long lines of cerebral magic users, originating as fortune tellers in the western part of europe and eventually settling in the north of Ireland. Poppy grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins, all of whom were involved in the running and maintenance of the family shop that sold magical paraphernalia to those so inclined and sundry instruments and knick knacks for everyone else.

Axel’s appearance is just as relaxed as he is (most of the time). Though his hair is trimmed relatively short, it’s still long enough to be tastefully disheveled—each morning, instead of brushing it, he runs his fingers through his hair until it’s sticking up at odd angles. Similarly to that, his clothes intentionally sloppy. Big shirts—t-shirts, sweatshirts, or sweaters, depending on the weather—and semi-baggy pants are his go-to, which are always to be paired with his favorite scuffed-up sneakers and an assortment of rings on his fingers. He’s a big fan of layering, too, so that he can be comfortable no matter the temperature of the space he’s in.

At 6’2”, Axel towers over most, though more often than not, there’s nothing especially intimidating about his large stature until he’s angered, which happens rarely. If anything, he could be compared to a big dog—his bark is often worse than his bite, falling closer to the side of cuddly and clumsy than vicious and malevolent. His face is easily readable by those around him—it’s always clear what he’s thinking; whether his emotions are expressed in a smile or a scowl, he doesn’t try to hide them.

The belief that large families are full of love is a misconception when it comes to the Jericho household. Axel, along with his four brothers and sister can all attest to that because for Mr. and Mrs. Jericho, having that many children is nothing but a way to maintain their social standing.

Even when they were little, it was evident how controlled they were. Their parents seemed to have a say in everything they did, from the kids they hung out with to the extracurriculars they partook in, and it was only a precursor to the hell they’d be put through as they grew older.

Axel’s oldest brother was the first to fall victim to their parents’ unsolicited matchmaking services. He doesn’t remember much from this time—Axel was preoccupied with his first shifting experience and the aftermath it left in its wake, but there were some things he didn’t understand then that had been engraved in his mind: the hushed voices coming from the dim living room, Axel’s brother’s tense posture and the way his feet shifted on the plush carpet, and the way his mother’s gaze had flickered to his silhouette in the doorway (his presence given away by a creaking floorboard) and the forced smile that followed as she ushered him away.

It seemed so insignificant at that moment, but Axel’s not a child anymore.

Axel’s time at Nightshade gave him a newfound sense of freedom from his parents’ tight clutches, one that they hadn’t entirely counted on. He abuses this time away from home, making the most of it to get into as much trouble as he pleases.

Part of this trouble involved intermingling with the “wrong sort of people,” as Mr. and Mrs. Jericho would have put it. Axel was raised to believe that vampires were more monster than human, a danger to society as a whole—they even had a greenhouse situated behind their home with enough Slade Root to last many lifetimes—so what better way to spite his parents and their elitist practices than to become romantically involved with the so-called enemy of their species in a relationship of near Romeo and Juliet proportions?

Of course, Axel never intended to fall for the vampire. Liv was only ever supposed to be a bit of fun—he’d seen the way she looked at him, and why not take advantage of the situation? The next thing he knew, however, he found himself actually caring for her, and there was nothing he could do to stop the way his feelings grew from there.

After Axel failed to graduate, his parents cast the blame onto Liv, claiming that she was a distraction from his studies. While they weren’t entirely wrong, Axel simply didn’t care for school, which couldn’t possibly be Liv’s fault. There was no convincing his parents of that, though, and they kept him on a lockdown for most of the summer to prove it.

That was only the beginning.

Axel soon ended up in an all too familiar situation—feet shifting uncomfortably on the carpet as his fingers fiddled with his silver rings, itching for an escape as he listened half-heartedly to the conversation unfolding before him between his parents and the Mayfields.

He was to be with a good werewolf girl, as his brothers had been.

Under any other circumstances, Axel probably would have run for the hills—as much as he wanted to put up a fight, his parents were just about as stubborn as he was—but as it was, Desirae was no bigger a fan of the situation than he was. She had nothing to do with the arrangement and was perfectly fine to continue business as normal, as if the arrangement had never been made—Axel could go back to not knowing she existed (almost) and to Liv for all Desirae cared, so it seemed.

The only problem was that Liv had gone radio silent since the summer began, and Axel had no idea what he’d done to deserve such a thing. Their parents were likely behind it, but one could never be too sure.
Axel is about what one would expect from someone in a band: charming, confident, and cool. He’s not exactly the most outgoing person—rarely would he consider approaching someone else first—but there’s a certain magnetism about him that draws others in. He carries himself with an easy sort of self-assuredness, the kind that lets everyone know that he doesn’t care what they think—love him or hate him, but he knows who he is and won’t change for anyone. Overall, he tends to be a laidback individual—bordering on lazy even, as he leaves the problem-solving to others as much as he can get away with, preferring instead to mind his own.

As much as Axel is known for his easygoing personality, even he has his limits. Though he isn’t necessarily quick to anger, he does have quite the temper once he reaches his breaking point. He can get a bit carried away, and that, paired with his unpredictable recklessness, makes him a dangerous force to be reckoned with. Even when he’s not, angry, though, Axel still has his downfalls. Despite his generally friendly disposition, he’s an acquired taste. The egotistical and self-centered ways that many musicians are so notorious for are both things synonymous with Axel, as is an individuality complex—a need to fuel his desire to be considered “better than most.” He’s not above manipulating others to see him in a good light, and sarcasm comes as a second nature, often speaking before he thinks about how those around him might perceive his words.

There’s a select few that Axel remains loyal to and truly cares for. Though he tends to avoid conflicts if at all possible, his overprotective nature (regrettably) won’t allow him to sit back and watch if someone he loves is in danger’s path. Though his overprotectiveness can border on overbearing, he usually means well, only wanting what he feels is best for the other party.

Personality: Not fond of speaking to many people, or generally engaging in a lot of the trappings of school life, Tessa often goes out of her way to avoid confrontation in any way she can when in person. For a while, there was a rumor that she’d gone on an hour and a half long trip around about the school to avoid someone. When interacting with those she’ll actually speak to, she takes great pains to be polite. When talking about what she enjoys, she’s surprisingly hard to stop, going off on tangents at random times to something loosely related. When not in class, she can most reliably be found in a quiet corner of the school library, chewing through whatever text she can get her hands onto improve her grasp of her abilities. She has a surprisingly high tolerance for the macabre.

History
History: Tessa was raised in a small house by a river in Ireland, inside a valley. For most of her childhood, she wasn’t exposed to a whole lot of the outside world, as dictated by her paranoid mother. After her father was beaten to death for reasons her mother would not explain, it was almost understandable. Her entire world was the house and the rainy terrain that surrounded it for 12 long years. Her mother, unfortunately, had started to grow more and more unstable as the local town began to develop closer to the river. That meant more restrictions and even less of the outside world. In her isolation, she’d been given a basic tutelage of her powers by her mother, and why she should never actually use them, let alone tell anyone she had any. The reasons always confused her.

Of course, when you tell a teenager not to do something, there’s a good chance that they’ll up and do it anyway. The ‘Doing-it-anyway’ involved creeping out of the house late at night, out through the window and into the local town. There, creeping along the roads at night, she met a girl who also happened to favor sneaking into town when the moon was high, usually to do whatever it was that teenagers did late at night with their friends. Tessa almost immediately hit it off with the other girl, Jane. She was quickly brought into her circle of friends, and returned their each night for a year, and while not exactly talking a whole lot, enjoyed their company and finally seeing what was beyond the valley. She may even have started developing feelings for Jane, and judging from the kiss they shared one night, she wasn’t alone.

As fate would have it that night, her mother had been sleeping restlessly and came out looking for her daughter. When she was discovered sitting on a damp park bench next to one of the girls form the town, hell was raised. Tessa, dreading returning to her home to be locked away, finally raised her voice against her mother. It got to a point where even the local police station sent out an officer to make sure that no-one was getting hurt. Of course, said officer wasn’t exactly pleased to learn that Tessa’s mother had essentially locked her child away for most of her life.

The next few years were an utter mess. She was out of the house, for once, bouncing between homes and temporary guardians like it was a checklist. Tessa was in and out of at least three different boarding schools, even getting bounced cross-country at one point. Fortunately, when the pressing matter of the fact she’d been blessed with magical capabilities slipped her lips, a rather formal invitation to an interesting school arrived for her. As soon as she was packed, the rest, as they say, was history.

While he isn't exactly mean, and not the sassiest person to throw in the ring, most people don’t know what Mapplethorpe stands for. Or... Well, what new meaning it seemed to sweat.

Milo Mapplethorpe. What a... Err... Delicate matter.

We should probably do a little overview. What happened that shifted the significance of that name. Milo.

The basics; They used to be a cheery, soft, fun-at-most-times guy. A tad flamboyant, sure. But that was nothing to be ashamed of, for them, at least. No one seemed to bat a suspicious eye at this Mapplethorpe. Even if no one is everyone’s cup of tea, Milo wouldn’t hesitate to treat anyone with kindness, undeserved or not. Even if some of their generosity was met with a mean edge.

And something that no one can forget, is his past boyfriend. Jason. Jason Huxley. Sporty guy, kinda chill. Your stereotypical ‘pure of heart dumb of ass’ jock. And for some extraterrestrial reason, Mapplethorpe was head over heels for that background character. Not... Weird, you just don’t expect the friendly classroom emo to go out with the sportsy dude bro.

Whatever, what’s... Or well, what was, important was that they were a happy duo. And almost everyone was happy with them.

Mapplethorpe is a secluded, angered being. Well, only since the… Accident. To put it bluntly, because everyone knows by now. Jason is dead.

But no one can really remember how he was before then, it feels like such a long time has happened since, you know, the death of his boyfriend… So why can’t he move on?...

Yeah, things like that really leave a dent in someone, huh?

It doesn’t help that people are suspicious, suspicious of him for the death of Jason. Remember how I told you that he only changed after the incident? Having a life-defining moment like that, and having it blamed on you, makes you do a complete 180. From this cheery, extroverted person, to someone you probably shouldn't test your luck on.

It was always Milo and Jason. The poster boys of positive LGBTQ+ representation in this decrepit place. Jason was popular, and Milo became too, he just wishes they were never in the first place. If they could keep that a... secret. Milo feels like that could've saved it all. Could've saved Jason.

Due to his relationship with Jason, Milo is almost treated like a totem. As if he must know something. The only thing he can remember is their last date. Last kiss goodbye. All of their chats, long talks and vents, their dates. It’s all gone now. And he feels like it’s his fault. Mapplethorpe could’ve done something, anything to prevent Jason’s lifeless body on the school grounds.

It felt like the moment Milo’s eyes met the insult of a corpse at the entrance, his whole worldview seemed to shatter.

Seeing the bloodsucked body of your loved one, and having some… other mentally affecting events going on at the same time hits hard.

It feels like his only escapes are his stress-relieving tendencies. Snapping his fingers, lashing out on others for things they probably didn't do, and chewing bubblegum.

’I pray; JUST CHANGE ME!’

Milo Summerhill Mapplethorpe lived a frightened, secluded life. He only knew his mother, people from his school, and others from the church he was forced to attend.

It didn't start awfully. But the cracks in the family of two were quick to show once Mapplethorpe entered elementary school. From general neglect, badmouthing, and setting bad examples, to unbearable abuse. Both psychical and verbal. It stemmed to advance as he endured and developed into his teenage years. But we should probably start with what came first.

The people he most remembers are:

Pandora Mapplethorpe. An unhealthy person in all aspects. Both to herself and to be around. An abusive mother, to put it bluntly.

Even as a younger child, Mapplethorpe still hoped that things with her mother might get just… bearable one day. And honestly, it hasn’t changed one bit. But he’s trying to keep his distance from both his “house” and family altogether. Some people might disagree, in a way. That family was the ‘greatest joy of life’ and it’s “super healthy to hang around your family.” If it wasn’t so dangerous then maybe Milo would doubt his decisions.

Eduardo Manuel Villalobos. Mapplethorpe’s non-biological father. Not as invisible as Summerhill, and not as abusive as his mother. Things were exceptionally awkward around them.

Sometimes they got along, and sometimes they didn’t. Let’s say that Milo doesn’t like to remember when they didn’t get along. It was a dice roll the few days he came home every month. But he’ll choose a semi-absent, neglectful, and sparingly abusive father over a horrible, terrifying mother.

??? Summerhill. A deadbeat, completely absent biological father. Milo knows nothing about him, and Summerhill knows nothing about his actual son. The few things that Milo has heard about Summerhill from his bastard mother’s shouts and drunken ramblings is that he wasn’t very good either.

He doesn’t know whether to be thankful or saddened that Summerhill was never present in his life. Pandora could very well be lying, and Summerhill could’ve been the father he deserved. And he could’ve guided him, supposing he was the one factor that gave him his shifting power. Or curse.

Some other prominent figures in his childhood were:

Fey Heartstrong. Sunday school teacher. Described shortly; She was terrible. But at that point, Milo was pretty used to that in his life.

Caesar Albert. Pope of his local church, religious, creepy, you know the deal. Milo still dreadfully remembers how he - and plenty of other children - were constantly pressured to keep up with the church’s strict societal rules and morals.

A little bit over the poverty line. That’s how he would explain his starting point. While they didn’t struggle as much as he’d believe to get food, the meals weren’t exactly nutritive. Mapplethorpe mostly relied on his school for free lunches and food. That was a little better than what his shit mother cooked. From mystery slop to plain bread, Milo always starved for something better. Which included the other problems in his house.

It began with simple shouts and slaps, he thought that was normal, good even. His friends sometimes complained about their parents treatment forwards them. But eventually, things got out of control, unnatural compared to what his classmates complained about.

But even then, “He was too young to know abuse” or so detailed by his mother.

Even now it feels abnormal calling Pandora Milo’s mother. From what they taught, and from what he has seen, Pandora was everything but what a mother should be; providing, caring, and understanding.

It was completely miserable. His life and way of thinking back then. Forgiving bruises that won't heal. Ever. He was always so tired and unhappy, at the age where kids were supposed to by exactly the opposite. Energetic, happy, and full of imagination and dreams.

Guess both him and his mother were outliers. But not in the positive, underdog way. And more in a “There is something deeply wrong about this family” type of way.

Mapplethorpe’s childhood was completely lost in the midst of abuse and scars. That's all he knows. That's all he remembers. His own cries and fearful screams still ring throughout his ears some days. Horrifying to think about.

And his once newfound power now seems like a curse.

Mapplethorpe can still vividly replay the moment that his mother practically... beat the power out of him. With some “deserved” slaps and punches, drifting into eventual violent scars, caused by a broken whiskey bottle. The scars run through his right arm.

That’s when his disgusting screams of pain turned into startled yelps, growls, and bites of terror. Eventually, Milo bit and drew blood out of his mother’s beating hand. Mapplethorpe was startled, completely confused, and terrified of whatever he just did to himself and his mother.

He was a witch, a lycanthrope. Something the devil himself sent to spread sin throughout the world. He should be punished, killed. And he still wishes he was.

He had discovered this newfound power, taste, and fear. At the age of 7.

A worthless homunculus.

Obviously, he was routinely abused further for what he did. For what he’s become.

His own inducted religion treated him like a monster. He was a monster. Or at least he thought he was. Through sacred words and ‘rituals’, he spent the later times of his now-lost childhood. Scared. A mere black sheep trying to keep up with the moving herd.

But that herd was only going in circles, an attempt to tire that black sheep and leave it behind. As if they’ll prosper without it.

Milo was constantly forced to ‘confess’. To regret. He was already doing that enough, for God’s sake. Constantly hoping he would be let go, pleading and crying. Begging to uncaring ears. Pulling and nagging at something that will never move.

But something always seemed safe.

His school.

And honestly, compared to his house, the church, the streets and public buildings, School was a heaven. A safe space. The ‘paradise’ that was always promised and taken away from him. He always felt... Normal in there. Nobody cared about what he did. Or whatever disgusting, transforming creature he had become. Everyone was at least a helping classmate. They were all tenfold more innocent than him. And Mapplethorpe would be anything to be like that again.

That wouldn’t last, and it was the fault of his own stupid actions again.

At that time, Milo was already in Middle School, around eight grade.

All of his feelings were multiplied at that age. But Mapplethorpe still managed to keep himself above water at school, completely avoiding being a total emo.

And there, he met a guy. A really cute guy. The one that made him doubt all of the feelings and beliefs that were shoved down his throat at that time. The whole men belong with women, god’s plan, and all that other bullshit. This guy- He was everything to him at that moment.

It was strange. A regular teenage romance. But for Mapplethorpe, and possibly others, it felt taboo. They shouldn’t be doing this, or so that big fat book said. He felt like he did a full 180 for his newfound love. Something to actually live for.

Colt Wolfgang. Your traditional, slightly douche-y bad boy. But he still cared about those close to him, a bad boy with a heart of gold, if you will. (Bleugh)

Milo’s first introduction to love, and delinquency. How he fell completely for this guy, he doesn’t know.

Colt was someone to cling to, someone that Milo could genuinely trust. Turns out, Wolfgang had completely fallen for him, too. Like it was meant to be, so to speak. They clearly enjoyed their relationship and what they had together. It was special for both Milo and Colt.

The one thing that Milo didn’t exactly... Tolerate was Wolfgang’s gang-y, brattish behavior. Colt came from a nearly perfect family. Another thing Mapplethorpe would give anything to have. But he managed to sweep that aside, the moments he spent with Colt were extremely sweet. He was caring, affectionate, and understanding. Defensive, even. Something his mother never was.

Mapplethorpe never showed his mother this love he had. Actually, it remained a secret for the longest time. But he did hope his mother didn’t wonder why he left school happier each day. But yet again, his mother didn’t remotely care for him.

Although, that big love they had wasn’t going to last very long once Milo had the dumb, teenage idea to invite Colt into his house.

About his house, it was by no means ugly, but rather big and well polished... Sometimes. Pandora’s drunken nights often left wine bottles and multiple other trash around the kitchen and living room. Which was rather embarrassing for Mapplethorpe, but that only worried Colt further.

They didn’t do much that night, they played in Mapplethorpe’s backyard a little, appreciated each other, the stars, how strangely beautiful this was. How beautiful Milo was.

Who had completely forgotten his mother was in the same house, basically in the same room, seeing as the backyard doors were some sort of transparent glass.

Eventually, like most couples, they kissed. It was pretty good. It felt amazing, actually. That sort of affection was never present, when it came to his mother. Of course, he still remembers that moment, and their small little date. And his enraged mother forcefully kicking out Colt. And after the door was slammed shut, the verbal and physical abuse that came after.

In a way, Milo thinks that he never saw Colt again. A few days after that, Wolfgang was distant, forgive him for... Everything and nothing. And just leaving. This wouldn’t work. Both Mapplethorpe and Wolfgang knew that this wouldn’t be healthy for either of them.

They were still friends, in a way. But it was weird, desolate.

Mapplethorpe felt unbelievably guilty after that.

This situation, plenty others, and his mother’s constant abuse brought him to an inevitable breaking point.

That, he doesn’t remember. He genuinely doesn't want to. And compared to everything else he went through. It’s weird this was the thing he wanted to block out. When he did self-harm. And had a first-hand attempt at suicide.

He hit an all-time low once he separated from Colt and his mother’s abuse came back again. And stronger than he had ever seen. It continued to rise as she found out about his suicidal tendencies. He would spend days and nights crying, regreting and being miserable.

Mapplethorpe only hoped that there was something, anything that could get him out of his horrifying hell. His shifting powers were out of control as well as his emotions nothing was a safe place anymore, not even school, as he was known for frequently “going feral” and attacking other individuals out of anger.

He created a bit of a name for himself the following year. Escaping his house constantly, engaging in delinquent nightly activities, and woefully, continuing his self-harm.

Eventually, it was about to truly be enough. That attempt was a mere test. A prototype. He was just too much of a coward at that time. Mapplethorpe felt like he didn’t feel fear anymore. He’d practically seem everything. Felt everything. Blood, violence, injustice, grief. Everything. All of it was ugly. Disgusting. Just like him. Just like his house, the church, and the school. The only places he knew, the only he hated.

No one cares about him, no one bothers. So why should he?

And that one, “faithful” day. When he was so sure of himself.

Doubt. It struck him.

Struck him just as hard as the name that came engraved on the blue-grey letter.

Nightshade Academy of Magick.

These were... People. From outside this barren wasteland.

And they wanted him. For something greater. Mapplethorpe genuinely doubted his decision, holding onto the letter and the end. Life could be... Amazing there. But it could always be horrible. Worse than what he had. Whatever it was, barely something.

Maybe he should. They wanted to help him, yes, they did. Despite it sounding... Awful. Disgusting. Disrespectful. He already knew what to do if things got as rotted as in here. He doubted it, like many things. But it was an opportunity, and after some weeks of thinking, he was ready to flee. This quote on quote place.

It was rather easy. They just... Took him away. I mean, not kidnapping, more like asking him questions, and then taking him to this Academy. There were other people with him, outside of staff, in what they were traveling in. The travel was alright, he guesses. He slept most of it. Regaining his energy for whatever was to come. Be it a wonderful time of super-cool learning, or his death.

Whichever was fine. Honestly.

History
History: Madeline grew up in a relatively stable household. Finances weren’t an issue, as her father owned a successful confectionary business. She had a brother four years her junior, and they got along fairly well themselves. Her parents tolerated each other, so there wasn’t really too much friction between them either. Madeline existed much the same as any teenage girl of her age, in her own bubble of the world and wondering what was beyond that.

Her family had a tie to the arcane, Madeline having developed an aptitude for shadow magic at a young age. It was almost impressive how quickly she latched on, leaping forward to a higher capability then most kids her age. Said practice fell to the wayside, however, once things started their slow delcline.

Her father, rather unusually for someone who ran a sweets business, was quite bitter. He grew discontent with the aimless nature of his life. Discontent became anger, and he turned to outside influences to dull that. Her parents stopped getting along as well behind closed doors, their shouting being able to be heard from the rooms of the kids late at night. Madeline quickly realized that she had become the primary source of companionship for her brother, as her mother had started to retreat into herself. So, she adapted, started trying to look more on the positive side, and it caught on.

Her brother was better off for it as well, and they grew closer as a result. It was not an ideal arrangement, but it was good enough for the both of them. Up until the letters on the table started rolling in for private schools for those with unusual abilities. Before Madeline knew it, she was being sent off in a train to a boarding school. It was hard to stay positive about having to change schools because your parents had business to sort out, but she tried. There as always a silver lining. Hopefully.

Khal has never had an interest in staying out until the new light of day, getting so drunk that you wake up in a puddle of your own puke and rallying it to do it again the next day. Simply put: socialization for the sake of socialization has never been high on her list of priorities... at least this was what she told herself for all these years. This doesn't mean she doesn't like company, just... not in large quantities. And it's been like this for a long, long while. Aside from her allergy to the public, Khal has always generally been a skeptical, sarcastic woman with little to no time to fool around. There are spellbooks to be studied, runes to decipher, more reading than imaginable and to become the best, she dedicates most of her time to her studies. She will be that you know; the best. Whether she has to stay up well into the night to hear her peers smashing beer cans on the lawns & using their drunken stupors as an excuse for poor decisions while she's holed up in her room, nose in a book & noise cancelling headphones firmly on.

Though this bookworm trait has led to trouble in itself. Pining young men, sliding up next to her in the library hoping for the innocent act of fetching her number are, more often than not, instantly made to regret their choice of seating. Venom laces Khal's tongue like a rattlesnake, her stare cold and deadly. If you're not dumb enough to prod at a deadly reptile, perhaps you'll think twice before trying to make small talk with the witch at hand. Unless she's taken a liking to you, you may find yourself having nightmares over those ebony black eyes. After all, she certainly has earned the nickname 'viper'.

Should ever you find yourself able to pull a smile or a laugh from the witch, to see her eyes brighten for a split moment, to see her shoulders fall down her back as her posture loosens for mere moments... it is there, in that moment, that you have tamed the viper. Not many see it, some say you've got a better shot at seeing bigfoot than to see a Noh girl show her teeth in a way other than a hiss. Since it's so reserved, however, find pride in yourself should you be able to crack the concrete exterior. Secretly, it's Khal's hope that maybe someone will attempt the impossible task. But even she knows that most aren't that patient.

When she isn't spitting acid or buried in a book, Khal is a fairly normal girl who desperately needs her down time to recharge. Usually lounging about her dorm in loose, flowing black pants that band at her waist and a cropped off black t-shirt, you can often find her with headphones on and lofi drowning out all the studying she's been doing. She enjoys perching in the windowsill, watching the rain while the cold nips at her skin from just beyond the glass. Her houseplants are always alive and well, her computer screen usually on petfinder.com where she browses cats up for adoption. This down time is almost sacred, these moments where her shoulder blades lot down into her back while her body releases all the tension that comes with being the viper. In here, in the safety of her dorm, she is simply her.

Reading historical memoirs, scowering paintings and more specifically, the diaries of the early witches, are just some of the things that get her excited. Though if you're wrong about an event in her presence? I'd beware of the tongue lashing you'll receive.

Everyone tells you that you're lucky when you grow up in a family like the Noh family.
Khal will assure you, she was anything but. Growing up in a family of powerful Seculars meant one thing; pressure.

Pressure to be the best, pressure to be mature, pressure to make the right decisions, pressure to be exactly who her parents wanted her to be. Pressure from a father who was written about in the textbooks she studied for being able to translate & revive ancient spells that were thought to be long gone. Pressure from a mother who led the discovery of weaponized familiars for Seculars far and wide. Pressure to live up to such great expectations and when she didn't, Khal swore that the sneers were audible.

A kid who just wanted normalcy, forced into greatness when all she wanted was to sneak onto the roof and watch the stars... how lucky they were.

No one wants to be friends with the teacher's pet. Maybe that's why it became Khal's mission to start building those walls of mortar and obsidian back in eighth grade.

If you're gonna be a loner, you might as well try to do it on purpose.

It's easy to become undesirable, Khalani concluded early on in her wall-building. In fact, it was so easy that she wondered why more women her age didn't attempt it. Reject a few men, tell them they're dreaming or degrade them until something shatters in their eyes, or tell the popular pretty-in-pink miss that she'd be prettier with a brain, and boom. No more problems. Other students at Nightshade rarely attempted to converse with Khal these days, mostly giving her passing onceovers or glares before walking past to their classrooms. Occasionally a newcomer would try, which genuinely, was sweet. However the sickening stench of a try-hard, Barbie pink girl wasn't exactly Khal's taste when it came to friendship. It wasn't even judgement at that point, but sheer exhaustion at the thought of the brainless conversations that would ensue should she initiate to go for coffee or catch a movie.

So instead, Khal spent a lot of time alone. A lot of time alone. And how thoughtful it is of those inner shades to keep Khal company in those times alone. Those seeds of doubt taking it upon themselves to bloom, those mocking grins of family & faculty confirming the fear that she doesn't deserve the Noh name... and how sweet the bourbon tastes when it drowns the grins and suffocates the seeds as it settles into her belly, only inviting in the comfy tasks of journaling, listening to music or baking a sweet treat. How sweet the bourbon tastes when it manages to right the wrongs that Khal's brain is so insistent on spewing. Being alone suited Khal, truly, though that doesn't mean that it was always easy. She's found that few things in life are easy...

It's easy to become undesirable... until you wish, deep down, that you were desired.
