Appearance:

Phairnaul's face holds a sharp nose and deep-set eyes, adding to the pronounced cheekbones further exaggerating an intense gaze. His shoulders are broad and attach to an above-average build, though the automatic posture gives him more an air of athleticism than brute power. His eyes hide under a shadow cast by a metal norman-style helmet, which protects the neck with a slap of rawhide leather. A dark-green hoodless cloak wraps around the body, hiding padded cloth armour and an elaborate set of tattoos along both arms. The breast of the cloak, and the padded armour underneath, display a bright-yellow set of chevrons indicating his rank.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
One would be hard-pressed to call Phairnaul's presence 'pleasant,' especially as a stranger; the man, entirely clad in cloth and with his burlap face cover, gives at the least a reason for great suspicion. Though if one could get used to it, the next leap is to endure the horrible scent of the many powerful herbs kept within the cloak. To add to it, his voice is a grating rasp occasionally viewed as grating and commonly, with the addition of his accent, hard to understand.

Phairnaul has a great interest in foreign stories, though not so much unfamiliar music. He craves new experiences, whether they be battles or sights. However, he is also prone to quickly become bored.

Strengths: A mind capable of ruthless determination, desperate to both experience new things and consistently be victorious in his struggles.
He is a gregarious one whenever there is a need; if one is to be victorious, they have to earn that victory.
Weaknesses: While he can show great determination, others might describe it as obsessive. It, at the worst of times, can create a mental 'tunnel vision,' making him miss important details unrelated to the immediate target or task.

Religion: Ramai.

Possessions:
Phairnaul keeps the assigned equipment from his professional days, as well as a few new things found to be useful for a guerilla - A roundshield, rimmed with rawhide and a face painted to display brown and blue circles layering from the center to the edge; a viscious falcata, given a well-deserved reputation as a soldier's cleaver; a woodcutter's axe, meant more as a tool than for combat; a small pouch filled with a mixture of rockdust, imported pepper, and the tips of thorns.

Biography:
Magic's introduction to Hudol brought many grand changes to the world- The blind could be made to see, buildings could construct themselves, and life could be breathed into inanimate objects. However, it is not only magic that came to the world; beasts and monsters - otherworldly creatures alien to what is known. Some with a desire to know the language and integrate with Hudol as citizens, others uncaring to man's squabbles - But there are those darker than anything understood. There are those in skins too grotesque and unnatural for men to remember, with wims so abominatory they are not even spoken of in whispers, save to pray they never come for them.

So they do not be like Hragsfrot.

They came from the forests, things to never be recorded in writings and only passed on by witnesses in rambles and cold sweats. They spoke of manthings who came from the Orester forest, clad in bleeding bark scratched to tell fables of chaotic gods and their rituals. Veterans from the battles say some were sixteen feet tall, strong enough to throw a man past six men - Others say some, with large elk-like horns to show their distinction, could use inhuman magics to turn the battle's tide.  Whatever the truth, their danger has not been understated; they came from the forests as an army  - an amalgamation of abominatory things worthy of being cast out by more holy gods. The professional guard of Hragsfrot is a small and inexperienced force, too weak even with the bolstered numbers from integrating its stationed militias. Battles are terrible and bloody - Formations caved in by monstrous assaults and overwhelming charges. The war is fought in a continuous repetition of retreating, holding, and retreating again - The only plan in being to stop the tide. In the future, when the war is ended and the monsters took the nation for their own, this great field would be known as the "Sea of Swords," referring to the arms and bodies left to rot and rust on the surface.

After losing the battle of Hragsfrot's capital city, the armies and militia finally disbanded. With no force to oppose the beasts, they themselves broke into their respective clans to establish control over this new land. Its inhabitants are made subordinate to new masters, forced to convert to unfamiliar deities and take part in horrofic rituals - The 'oaths of Aghildur,' the 'honouring of new coming,' and others better left forgotten. These accounts will never be recorded, but occasionally passed on to travelers or younglings as one ominous warning: To never submit to such powers. Many who did not submit are burned on the altars in those terrible months. Conspirators suffer worse fates, their bodies disposed of in the Sea of Swords for later rituals or ceremonies.

Though not all is lost; just north of the Orester forests, a man discovers powers within him once impossible. Its exact nature is unkown, but what remains of the royal family use him as a rallying cry for the disloyal Hragsfrot citizens; the man is presented in banner as a chosen messenger of their gods - proof that their prayers are not truly in vain. As the royal family attempt to rally the people, others sneak away to hire foreign mercenaries.

Phairnaul is a sergeant of what remains of the Orester Forest patrol, commanding five men under Cornet Ghelder. The unit totals to no more than twenty four men - a small few who were willing to continue the fight after the failed defense of the capital. It is a battle few veterans are willing to speak of. The small unit takes to guerilla actions against guards, priests, and holy sites. Cornet Ghelder hopes to expand their activities to gather rebels to their cause, and perhaps join the royal family in the coming battle. They have sent Phairnaul to an eastern fishing village to gather information on the tension of power and the activities of their enemy.
