Futuristic NCQuest: Breaking Era

You cut straight through the middle of the base, firing your left gauntlet's plasma blade. A magnetic field traps an amount of superheated plasma, and you begin firing wildly at enemies in front of you to make way, slicing in half anything that isn't blown to pieces by a combination of coil-assisted ferromagnetic slugs or highly explosive rockets.

A trio of tanks, stolen models that you don't yet recognize, race out of their maintenance spots to greet you, firing their ninety-millimeter cannons rapidly. A mass of armor-piercing rounds aims for you, but due to your sheer speed you almost effortlessly manage to dodge them by suddenly jinking to the left, towards the tanks. The volley of shells pass behind you, and rotating your head just to the right, you see they're doing some of your job for you.

The rounds, fired wildly and in a panic, begin to impact their own support tankers by accident... which are right next to artillery guns with highly explosive rounds. The chain-reaction totally annihilates a third of the enemy forces in a single massive explosion. Shrapnel from it hits a radio tower in front of you, cutting it almost cleanly in half, as it snaps fully and traps a group of men underneath it. Passing over them, you log them as possible prisoners for MAVERICK.

You quickly rotate while still moving, and fire off your own short volley from your Linear Carbine, hitting the mark each time and only expending a trivial nine rounds to take out the trio. You empty the magazine firing at their still-readying brethren as you pass them, also launching two high-explosive rockets, gutting four more of the tanks.

You go back into the storm, and plan your next move while reloading your weapons.

1) Rotate about ninety degrees around the center then come back for another go.

1a) Same tactic as before; straight through and plow through anything in your way.

1b) The survivors might be expecting that; start flying higher.

2) Rotate fully around, giving both you and the defenders more time to think.

3) Think on your feet. (Write it in)

You maneuver around inside the storm, and decide to keep to your advantage. You twirl about the center, until you're sure you'll end up behind the last remaining token of resistance. You launch out from the storm, begin flying high, and unload your ranged weapons at the five remaining tanks, blowing them apart in a single combined volley of high explosives and kinetic energy.

You land almost neatly in the middle of the base, and check your surroundings. The five transport helicopters are seemingly suffering from storm-related engine failure; and their occupants must be hoping you forgot about them. Aside from their motors powering down, the base is eerily silent... Well, also aside from trapped soldiers' pleas for mercy.

Your eyes are drawn towards the primary beacon; right in the middle of one of the sub-surface elevators. You still have another facility to chew through... This one'll be slightly more interesting, you reckon.

What do you do next?

1) Secure the surface and 'negotiate' with the transport personnel and your prisoners first.

2) Step onto one of the elevators and see what's in there.

3) Technically, you could start chucking both yours and the enemies' unspent explosives down there to 'secure' it...

4) Think of something else.

You cool your jets and begin walking towards the five helicopters, pointing your rifle towards them. You activate your external loudspeakers. "Get out of your vehicles and you will not be harmed. Hands behind your head." The people in the transports comply; you see roughly six come out of each transport. You come closer. And closer still, weapons aimed to blow them apart into a thin red paste.

You stop when you're almost ready to step on them, and look down. You think you should ask the logical first question. "Why were you here?"

You can see all of them looking at each other until one is the designated 'talker'. An older male, he must be the most seasoned amongst them or something. Still in his own piloting dress (Nothing like your own, of course), he looks up at you, almost visibly shaking even with his balaclava, and says; "We-we've received reports of old-world tech here." letting you assume the rest.

"Obviously enough.", You say in response, your one-hundred-and-sixty millimeter coil-assisted rifle still aimed directly at his face. You wonder if you're being too hard on him. That's a lot of gun.

What do you 'ask' out of him next?

1) "What's in the facility?"

2) "What's loaded in your helicopters?"

3) "Are there any more of you?"

4) "You feel lucky?"

5) Ask him about something else. (Write it in)

"What's in the choppers?"

Your sensors can read his heat increase just a little.

"...T-tech.", the man says, looking into your 'eye'.

Internally, you raise your eyebrow. "What kind of tech?"

He shivers. "They didn't tell me, just some kind of tech! I'm not paid to ask questions!"

"...What's it look like?"

"...A bunch of fucking boxes?! I'm not allowed to open them up and peek god-dammit!"

You load a round in the chamber, also letting a man-sized shell fall to the ground next to him to remind him who's he dealing with. You see him visibly soil his pants a little as it impacts, blowing sand into his and some of his compatriot's eyes.

...Aside, it makes sense, really. It's not like everyone has to know everything in an operation. You could probably get somewhere with a different question. Unless you'd like to jump into the elevators and find out.

1) "I'll be right back; don't turn yourself into an example."

2) "You've been in the facility?"

3) "Any reinforcements you've heard of?"

4) "You've served your uses." (Step on him/Expend a round)

5) Think up something else to ask him.

5) Is there anywhere we could put the prisoners inside, like a metal container we could block with something heavy they would be able to get out of the way? That way they won't be a problem while we explore the rest of the facility. It would probably be good to put the people trapped under the tower in the makeshift prison as well if it works.

((Sorry for not posting for a while, Thanksgiving drama is worst drama.))

You look around for an impromptu prison for your captives, and find a decently-sized metal transport container of some kind that you accidentally blew away. Setting it on the ground, you commit to some improvised construction; welding a ripped-off sheet of tank armor here, using a tent as a tie there, and soon enough you have the dream-home of a junkyard dog. Of course, instead, you're using it as a jail.

You 'gently' open the lid to the container (as gentle as a pair of giant robot hands can be), and begin placing your first batch prisoners into it. You quickly dash over to the collapsed radio tower and 'rescue' the group trapped under it just to throw them in with their aerially inclined compatriots. Grunts and flyboys, great combo.

You close the lid and, just in case, also move the husk of the tank you scavenged materials from towards the door.

So, now what? There isn't much left to do, is there...?

1) Actually, you could investigate those helicopters yourself.

2) Just continue your own mission; you've probably wasted enough time in Raven's eyes. You're sure he's still watching you, somehow.

3) Try something completely inexplicable.

1) Actually, you could investigate those helicopters yourself.

The Helicopters could have stuff from the base so we should probably check them out first.

You lightly jump and begin floating over to the helicopters, and land near their collective back-end. You go to the one closest to the back and, again, 'gently' try to force it open. Removing its ability to shut again, you see the boxes of material that the guy told you about. You reach in, your massive metal manipulator barely fitting, and pull out one of the relatively girthy boxes. Bigger than a fully grown man man, they eerily almost resemble large coffins; but you see no signatures of life inside. No heat, no movement. Nothing of the sort that suggests any kind of life ever saw the inside. Whatever's inside, mechanical or otherwise, it looks like it's been offline or dead for a long, long while.

You, again, try to open it, finding a barely-visible vertical seam on its 'short' sides. Flipping it open with one of your giant fingers like a letter or laptop, you see a long, cylindrical, but cruciform object; two smaller tubes ending in ports of some kind that necessitate the almost coffin-like shape of its container. You don't see dust, fingerprints, or anything else that suggests human hands have made this, recently or otherwise. Unlike the container, you can sense a quite small amount of heat emanating from it, originating near the bottom tip.

What the hell are these?

1) Do all the containers hold these? How many are there?

2) Do all the helicopters hold these?

3) Look for answers deeper into the facility.

You put the thing back into its container, and put the container back into the helicopter. You get back up, and walk to the closest sub-surface elevator. Your scanners tell you that it could go down anywhere from a hundred to a thousand meters below the surface; it can't tell the specifics, but it's pretty deep, considering. Quite comparable to a Burrow.

You look around for a console or a button or remote control or something, but after standing on the elevator for a while it starts by itself. How awfully convenient. It carries you down, and down, and down a dark tunnel, until it begins to move slightly sideways, then almost fully. Your alternative sensors, namely, radar, sonar, and so on, give you an idea of what's around you, almost like a bat's echolocation. Ultimately, though, you can rely on all of your senses as light begins to flood into your actual vision. Well, your robot shell's actual vision, as you reach the end of the tunnel.

The entrance to the facility proper is a large metal door that's already opened, at least partially; one of the two diagonally-sliding doors has been forced to open with a metal bar of some kind... what worries you is that it's precisely the right size for an NC's melee weapon, and it looks the part. Although makeshift, you can see a distinct handle, and many spikes and knobs on its front-half. Ultimately, your sensors, subconscious, and MAVERICK's database work together to catalog it as an 'NC-sized makeshift Kanabo' of some kind.

This can only mean one thing. This anti-establishment group has an NC...

There's two possibilities; It's already in the facility and knows you're here, ready to ambush, or it's somewhere else and could come in at any time. Even if it's a scavenged, 'junker' type, judging by its abandoned weapon, it's still an NC. It's a huge risk, and an equally huge opportunity; taking on another NC and winning would look very good on your metaphorical resume, especially during your graduation task. Of course, it could go the other way and you'd either have to retreat, a very bad thing, or... the other result.

Of course, their NC could be on the other end of the planet.

What should you do?

1) Continue your investigations; go inside.

1a) Take the Kanabo on the way in.

2) Radio Raven/Terrance for advice.

3) Investigate the entrance.

4) Do something completely or mildly different.

1)  We are supposed to Secure the area of hostiles worthy of a Neural Combatant, which means fortunately or unfortunately the enemy NC if there is one. So let us move inside to check, but as carefully and as stealthful as possible. If we do not see the NC here we should immediately report in with our findings.

You begin walking into the facility; lowering your NC's head under the Kanabo and shimmying yourself inside. Whatever this facility is, its halls and tunnels are gigantic, obviously; easily enough room for your twenty-meter-tall second skin to move around in comfortably. The room you'e in now divides into three; two tunnels forwards, and another to your left.

None of them have doors, so you can see into them somewhat. The one to your left appears to have construction equipment of some kind, alongside scaffolding, each set having walkways and ladders for human workers, apparently. You can't see from here just what the workers could've been working on, long ago.

The two forwards appear to be a ramp down to another section of the facility, and a hangar that has scorch marks and apparent debris inside of it.

A battle? Raven did mention defenses...

1) Investigate the evidence of a fight.

2) Go to the apparent construction or maintenance zone.

One guy saying 4 thrice vs two guys saying 1 once... Yeah, it isn't a tie.

You walk into the apparent hangar or staging area, and see the tell-tale remains of automated defenses, some that you learned about during your training.

You look over what seems to be the remains of a 'Squid Type' automated defender. 'Squids', as they're nick-named, are mechanical units built around a hovering oblong spheroid that drags along a variable number of multi-jointed arms, usually fitted with simple close-combat weapons. Ultimately, they usually resemble their namesake.

They generally reach anywhere from three to ten meters long, and are never particularly fast, but they're nimble and surprisingly tough, due to the fact that their limbs can usually act like ablative armor. The only true dangers for them are the numbers you can find them in.

Aside, you can't see any debris that isn't 'Squid' related...

1) Continue looking around the first level.

2) Go down to the second level.
