Appearance:
Matias stands at 5'7, a willowy figure of richly tanned skin and dark hair cut close to the scalp, his face rounded and slim and almost slightly boyish, and thus rather off-putting for some; his eyes, large, thickly lashed but shadowed beneath his low, full arches, are a dark amber-brown and flecked with gold like tiny stars. Despite their beguiling colouration, they ever remain oddly disconcerting at first. You get used to them.
Moving downwards, his nose - straight, wide and slightly upturned at the tip, his jaw ever so lightly dusted with stubble but otherwise cleanly shaven, and his lips plush with their small cupids bow and slightly pouty appearance, despite his best efforts. His small and slightly pointed ears are pierced with two golden studs on each side.

Birthplace:
Córdoba, Argentina

Profession:
Engineer up on the orbital platform

Character Skills/Flaws
Character Skills:
  • Major Skill: Megamind - Pure, bloody intelligence (and all the arrogance to go with it). He picks things up quickly, and he can certainly remember it all afterwards; he possesses both imagination and logic in equal measures, but it's a rare day indeed when he decides to engage his mind to it's fullest extent. Why bother, after all?
  • Minor Skill 1: Social Call - Despite not often actively seeking to be the centre of a crowd, he is both socially adept and capable of drawing attention, for whatever dramatic or self-serving reason it may be...
  • Minor Skill 2: Engineer - Matias, due to his quick learning, sponge-like memory, base knowledge of various advanced scientific concepts and a few (ok, many) all-night binges on whatever books he could find that went in-depth on mechanics and engineering, is possessing of a highly extensive knowledge on these such topics. It is his job, after all. He figured that he could gain the hands-on experience when he actually got the position, which does leave him with comparatively little practical knowledge.
  • Minor Skill 3: Nightingale - He's just good at singing, for some reason. Whatever. He'd rather die than sing in front of people.

Character Flaws:
  • Disadvantage 1: No Jackie Chan - He's not a fighter, and hasn't got the particular build for it either. Sure, he's healthy, dextrous, not too weak - he's no stranger to working with heavy machinery - but he probably wouldn't last beyond the first blow or two in an actual fight, and that's just talking about humans. While he could probably tell you all the physics you could possibly want to know about them and then some (nerd), he has had virtually no experience with firearms either. After all, why would he? He holds those who make their living purely off violence to some disdain; quietly, though, in case they hit him.
  • Disadvantage 2: Sloth - Matias lacks motivation. To do anything. Well, beyond that of to provide his means of living (work) and in pursuit of his own comfort, he has little interest in putting his energy and talent into much else. If you're looking for some kind of ambition, drive or altruistic motive, there's little to be seen here.
  • Disadvantage 3: Fleeting - His mind works quickly - sometimes a little too quickly. He lacks the ability to focus for long periods of time, and is often prone to skipping over details (or just details he considers unimportant), be it with machines, situations, or even with people. Perhaps being down to his self-assurance in his own intelligence, it is, potentially, a very dangerous habit.
  • Disadvantage 4: Stormy Seas - He is both temperamental, trouble-making and stubborn, and can become (verbally) quite vicious in anger. Plus, he would sooner shoot himself in the leg than ask for help.
  • Disadvantage 5: Poor Little Rich Boy - Beyond his crash course in engineering, socialising and his school education, he has developed preciously few general life skills. Cooking, for example. Any form of street smarts. Sure, he can pick concepts up quickly, but it's perhaps, yet again, due to his arrogance in this ability that this has suddenly become a problem.
Personality
Fears:
_ The psionic network
_ Anything happening to the functioning of his mind, in old age or otherwise
_ Things he doesn't understand
_ Being controlled, both consciously and/or subconsciously
_ A surprise family reunion

Optimism vs. Pessimism:
Matias is surprisingly balanced between the two, sometimes in one camp, sometimes the other - depends how his day's going - but also unsurprisingly replaces this with his tendency towards harsh, unforgiving (often particularly annoying) realism. Perhaps you could say, though, that he prefers the more optimistic side of things - pessimism means stress, and Matias hates to be stressed.

Introvert vs. Extrovert:
Extrovert. But not by too much.

Justice vs. Mercy:
Logic leads to justice, but he can't help acknowledging mercy as a viable option. Of course, everything depends on circumstance, but in most situations he would lean towards justice anyhow. Society functions upon justice, right?

Feelings on the Union:
He, of course, was never personally affected by the great losses of the surrounding areas that embittered so many towards the Union, nor was he affected by the military attacks upon the Anti-Union organisations. It provides him with both work and as a means of escape, so how can he complain? Of course, he's no fanatic, not by any stretch - if any other organisation could provide him with the same benefits, it would be the same to him. He tries not to think too much on the more complex political workings.

Common Mannerisms:
He tugs at his earlobe or bites the tip of his thumb when he's thinking about something, or when he's just a little uncomfortable. He's often slightly slouched, his posture relaxed and languid almost to the point of resembling a cat on a hot windowsill, but his eyes always remain sharp.
Matias sometimes talks a little faster than normal, but his every word somehow still remains sounding fully deliberate, matter-of-fact and carefully placed, even in his usual airy tone; his Argentinian accent is normally soft and toned down, but still makes his words (ignoring their usual know-it-all content) melodic and pleasant to listen to.

Interests & Hobbies:
_ Sleeping
_ Starting drama
_ Winning arguments
_ Social media
_ Keeping toasty warm
_ Tending to his plant
_ Vintage movies

Overall Personality:
Matias just wants to sleep. Well, perhaps not just that - he does have a few other things to do in life, but it's certainly an important factor. He's easily bored, curious, impulsive; perhaps fickle, and sometimes infuriatingly contrary when it comes to following orders. But alongside all the sark and the idle troublemaking is a fiercely moral heart, despite him not always being all too emotionally available. He may often be distant and lofty, but he's not a terrible person. Usually, anyhow.

For someone who'd just like to nap next to a heater all day, Matias can get highly impatient and frustrated when people are either slow in doing things or slow on the uptake. He can become condescending and irritable, much to the similar irritation of anyone on the other end of this attitude. But Matias also has a tendency to not take things all too seriously, and if he can get away with it, then he will. Perhaps he's grown just a little too complacent, seeing as he's never been caught out.
But Matias, too, has his doubts beneath his otherwise fully self-assured nature, just like everyone else. Not many, but still. (Did he make a mistake leaving for the station?) He's still slightly soft, slightly fragile; he wasn't exactly brought up on the streets. But he's shrewd, confident, open-minded, perhaps even kind on occasion - he may not be a shining example of a human being, but he's not without his good qualities.

As a side note, Matias almost always finds himself slightly cold. Not in terms of personality, no, but in temperature; he blames it on his Argentinian blood, growing up in the heat of Córdoba, and then suddenly moving to the very fringe of the frozen void itself. He hates the cold.

History
History:
Wealth, influence and power - the Rosalez family hit it big in the weapons manufacturing industry, thanks to both the extraterrestrial and civil wars. And by big, I mean big. They were a wealthy family before, of course, but it was nothing compared to the fortune they were steadily making from the bloodshed. Matias and his two older brothers grew up wanting for nothing; nothing material, at least - good parents might have been nice. Who knows. Even so, they were, as would expect, relatively protected from the outside world, but this was exchanged their exposure to the complex and often dangerous socio-political hierarchies on the inside. It wasn't a particularly normal childhood, but it was good enough. For some time, at least - he was thankfully overlooked for most of it, left to go to school and do what other boys his age did. Mostly. The quality of education available to him, especially, was impressively high, and from this he certainly came to benefit. But before long, his eldest brother soon made his way into the military ranks and upwards, which was pleasing enough to their parents, and his other brother chose to remain with the family business. Overlooking the subtle family dramas that had ensued between them, it all ended up neat and tidy, and it left Matias alone under their gaze. And the Rozales' have always been ones to exploit their assets.

His intelligence hadn't exactly been a secret - it had clearly outstripped that of his brothers', even from a young age. To his parents, this was an opportunity; they would use him, drawing their idea from the famed mental capabilities of the late Cyrus, to become part of the psionic network. For what specific gain, it wasn't fully clear, besides being purely out of their own interests - business related, perhaps, or to keep an eye on information on the war that they otherwise may not be able to access. The prospect of an unsuccessful surgical procedure was not a problem, being the third and thus disposable son. But Matias was vehemently against their idea and their attempts to persuade him; it wasn't the mortality rates that made him so - instead, it was the thought of being connected to such a thing, giving up his mind to it, that filled him with such inexplicable terror that even the possibility was out of the question. And his father recognised this stubbornness - he didn't empathise with him and his fear, of course, but it was a trait he himself had passed down to him, and he realised that there was little they could possibly do to persuade him. And Matias knew that he knew this. He became no longer sure that his parents wouldn't take him and have the surgery performed on him anyway. Whether you would call it just the peaking point of the excessive paranoia of this neurotic rich kid or not, he suddenly knew that he needed to leave, and it was the construction of the platform (and just a few forged qualifications) that provided his escape.

I've read your character and here are a few things:

  • Social butterfly is too good to be a minor skill. Just roleplay him as being sociable instead of having a skill that lets him "command people". Switch it for something weaker.
  • In your history you mention cyrus and making a network. No one knows about that. People know of Cyrus as the first psionic and stuff, but no one knows he and the apostles are the secret filters of the network. Everyone thinks he died ages ago.

Ah yikes, ok -

- Social butterfly was just a fancy name, I'll change that - It certainly implies far greater abilities than he has! Also I mean the 'commanding' aspect as not a literal military commander but more of a drama-queen, as in all-eyes-on-me kind of vibe - I'll redo all that :)
- Also that was a badly put-forth meaning from me - I didn't mean that he would be starting his own network, or that he would have access to/be part of the filtering organisation, but they had drawn the link from the most famous psionic and his apparent intelligence ((that I'm also clarifying here and now that Matias is certainly not meant to rival)) into what their son could do for them with his own intelligence, which is not a crucial aspect to their idea, but is what instead gave them said idea. The writing is still quite rough - I always need to go over things several times to edit :-_-lines:

I'll go over it today and make any changes. Anything else on the rest? Ooh plus (question time!) I'm in the process of finding an image right now, but does it matter whether it's illustrated or realistic?

But no one knows what Cyrus does for the network, they all think hes dead. No one actually knows that Psionics are all connected to him, not even the people with psionics. So your parents couldn't want that.

I do like the drama queen type though, just rename it to something else. :D!

- It's not the knowledge of Cyrus's part in the network, but instead that as people did know him as the first psionic, despite being dead, and with this fame would have come knowledge of his intelligence (major part, I'm just assuming so?) which was factor that gave them the idea - nothing else was involved with anything else about Cyrus or the filter.
- Aye aye cap :D

Ah okay, I guess I misunderstood.

So how do they want to come into the network through you?

Yeah he was insanely smart, everyone knew that.

Nah my writing and explanation were pretty misleading, my bad!

It wasn't a particularly concrete plan - through the network, which, I am assuming yet again that everyone knew, information was shared and through this free flow of info they may become a step ahead in keeping track of the market/battlefront situation/etc. than their business rivals and just for general security. They needed a source they could keep close (and that preferably required no pay) and, well, Matias was there. In exchange for keeping them regularly updated on these channels, they would have granted him a few freedoms, or perhaps something he wanted in return, or just use blackmail, whatever... Obviously, they never really got to that stage in negotiations.
In essence, it was an experiment - if there was no useful information to be found, at least they had a psionic in the family, and if he died, oh well. Win-win?

Yeah I get it now :3.
