History:
Mark Diaz was born to Jonathan and Angelica Diaz, a slightly eccentric but still very loving couple, who raised their son as best they could, and adored him as their only child. Mark had a fairly happy and contented childhood, observing the world around him and eager to learn more about it, even though he was more introverted and quiet than most children. He still developed adequate social skills, even though he struggled with shyness when it came to other children his age. By third grade, Mark wasn't quite as introverted as he had been, but he still was seen as a bit different by his peers, because of how cautious he was. Mark had never been one to take risks or do things that seemed unfamiliar or dangerous to him, even when little. He was paranoid about keeping safe and never getting into accidents, which could come off as odd when he did things like always close any hanging open lockers and check for any cracks on the ceiling or floor before heading to class. He was an excellent student and likeable enough to those who knew him well, but unfortunately because of his more introverted behaviour and cautious persona, he was often one of the targets for bullying, which his school was unfortunately notorious for.
It could be quite difficult and painstaking for him go through, but Mark eventually resolved to remain as tough as he could despite what happened, and did his best to bear through whatever ridicule or mistreatment might be thrown his way, and to never give the bullies the satisfaction of caving or breaking. He employed this strategy and stuck with it as he grew through his younger teenage years, bonding with some of the other kids who were also outcasts during this time, and still working furiously on his schoolwork in order to get good grades, even though he still preferred to do so in a safe environment.
While Mark could eventually handle whatever bullying he went through with a resigned stubbornness, it did start to take a more subtle toll on him, and he couldn't help but also become extremely frustrated as his friends at school were bullied too, and at how unfair it really seemed, frustrated enough to actually really want to do something about it. Watching action movies all the time, especially martial arts ones, he always forlornly wished that he could do something like the heroes in those movies, to be able to take such a huge risk as fighting back would be, and to be more confident when it came to taking risks and embracing danger in general. At first this wishful thinking remained only that, but soon, a chance came to actually act on those thoughts. A small dojo had opened in the town he lived in, and would be having martial arts classes there. Mark was hesitant and nervous about going there at first, but after some contemplation, he decided that he had to push himself out of his comfort zone and take a chance, even if he didn't feel like he could do so.
And so Mark signed up for classes at the dojo over a couple of summers, and determinedly began to learn martial arts. It was hard, and he didn't do that well at first due to never really having participated in too many physical activities so seriously before, and most of all, because of his fear. Slowly but surely however, he kept trying to push himself past his mental block, and started to grow better at doing so. The things that he learned at the dojo helped him to gain more confidence, and finally feel like he was could be in control of himself and his life, without worrying too much about things that were out of his control. After a lot of hard work, Mark earned his way to a green belt, having become quite proficient with his fighting skills, and was extremely proud of himself for his great success.
When the summer was over and it was time to go back to high school, he was ready to face his fears, and finally confront the bullies that he had wanted to for so long in order to stop the unfair treatment. When he got back, he stood up for himself the minute that he started to getting harrassed, and bravely faced the person who was doing so. The situation ended with a physical confrontation, but this time Mark was able to hold his own, using his own quick thinking along with the skills he had acquired, and was able to beat the bully. He had finally done what he had wanted to for so long and stood up for what was right, and now that he had done so, it seemed like a given that everything would naturally change for him, for the better of course, and he would be a new man.
... Unfortunately, things didn't quite end up going that way, much to Mark's dismay. The bullying at his school did not stop overnight of course, even though he did get a little more respect once making it clear that he wouldn't be pushed around anymore, but his overly cautious tendencies did not magically disappear either. He still felt compulsive tendencies to be as careful as he always was, and while he was hardly as timid or fearful as he had been in the past, because of his remaining cautious habits, his reputation as the school's "safe kid" remained. On top of it all, his social anxieties and his now prevelant most teenage awkwardness still made it difficult to even talk to any girls that he liked!
Mark defiantly tried to oppose this, always declaring to his classmates and his teachers that he was no longer the safe kid, and was even a "misunderstood bad boy" now, but... his protests never really helped his reputation. Mark never really tried to break any rules or out right do something to prove his supposed newfound bad boy-ness, and instead just became reluctantly resigned to what he would always be seen as, and could never quite seem to overcome. He would jump at the chance to accidentally he in trouble however, and actually being called to the principal's office would be a dream come true so that he would finally not be seen as the goody two shoes safe kid anymore, but this never really happened. And so the boy continued high school, discouraged by his continuing habits, and never really being satisfied with who he truly was.
He longed for a chance for excitement in order to push himself out of his comfort zone further, for something spectacularly out of the ordinary and unexpected-- and then Estelle Amboise entered his life.
She was a foreign exchange student, a princess from another country, who had been assigned to live with the Diazes, who were to be her host family while she stayed. At first, Mark didn't know what to make of the situation, or the fact that this girl was going to live with them, and who he was going to have to guide through their country's ways. He and his family had done this sort of thing before, but never with someone like Stella. He was at first a bit intimidated and put off by her very outgoing nature and tendency to get into wild mishaps and adventures of all sorts, hardly able to keep up with her pace. But soon, it wasn't long before he started to embrace that about her, and actually be excited about hanging out with and tagging along with her. It was another chance to have some true excitement and adventure, and prove to both others and mainly himself that he could be so much more than what he was seen as.
Soon the two became fast friends, with Mark accompanying Stella as her best friend and confidante, and still acting as a helpful guide whenever she needed one. The Diazes happily accepted their new houseguest, adoring her antics and treating her exactly as a part of the family. Over time, through the trouble and numerous adventures the two friends went through, Mark slowly began to grow just as Stella did, and realize that he could be okay with himself just the way he was, rather than constantly striving to be a projected image of himself that he wanted to be. His image of himself started to be improved a bit, and being with Stella also greatly helped his confidence, as well as his social anxieties.
He hadn't completely worked through all of his issues yet, but he was starting to accept them, and not focus on them as much as he used to. He was just enjoying his time with Stella while it lasted, before she would eventually have to go back to her land and her royal family, as well as working as hard as ever to continue his education and keep up his good grades. Eventually, once several years had passed since Stella had come to live with his family, Mark realized that it might be time to further their education, not just through high school anymore.
At this point, he was enjoying the current lifestyle that their little family was having so much, that he was reluctant to try to change it, but finding a university for him and Stella to go to was the responsible thing to do. He felt like being the responsible one and looking out for Stella's well being was like his 'job', or at least his role, in the little friend dynamic of theirs. And so Mark soon talked Stella into the idea, then quickly started looking for universities for the two to attend together, only settling for ones that they could attend together and that were relatively close by, without anything less than that. It wasn't long before he found the perfect candidate, WDU, which was so close by that they wouldn't even have to live on campus if they didn't want to. The two friends sent in their applications, and were soon accepted.
Mark is still privately a little anxious about attending university and what misadventures or troubles might possible come of it, but he knows that with Stella by his side, he feels brave and confident enough to face about pretty much anything.
