Pettiest Bitch Out There

Alisha.

The ceiling was cracked and the walls were peeling. That was what Alisha had decided to focus on as she lay there on the dirty floor of the house she’d broken into. Well, it hadn’t necessarily been her breaking into it. More so just another house, forgotten by the owners. Though this house had been forgotten way before this outbreak even occurred. That much was obvious.

Alisha forced herself to sit up, letting out a small grunt at the tinge of pain in her side. While running from those things outside, she’d had to jump over a fence and into a backyard filled with junk. She maneuvered through it to the best of her ability but had still managed to snag her hip on some protruding object. She figured she would need to ice it or something. Oh, how she wished there was a luxury such as that one.

“Maybe there will be… Somewhere.” She mumbled to herself, running a hand through her unruly hair. She’d snarl when her finger got caught in a knot and wished even more than she had before that she’d find a hair tie soon. Her original plan had been to make it back to her home where she was sure her parents were. Just to see where they were and how they were doing. But then she’d remembered they’d taken a small trip, having saved up enough. The last she’d heard, they’d been in Indiana so that’s where she’d been heading.

She’d been with two other men that she’d had the chance of getting stuck in a house with only to be saved by the much older one. But they’d parted ways days ago and she once again found herself alone with silence as her best friend.

Alisha looked out the window, checking to see if any of those… people (could she even call them people?) were outside. There were two but they were two houses down and seemed more focused on standing around. She’d be okay if she took a nap now. Grabbing her bag, Alisha made it to a corner where she wouldn’t be seen if one were to look in through a window and got her spot ready. Then with some wiggling, Alisha’s head would rest on her book bag and her eyes would close.

For once, she’d accept the silence surrounding her and try her best to get some much-needed rest.

So close.

They were finally so, so close to Independence. After what-- ten thousand years of walking? Loren's backpack was starting to run thin on supplies and between her and Felix's growling stomach they could probably pound through the rest in minutes. But hey, the kids had made it this far and they weren't about to stop now. Especially since there we no bullets left in the rifle, which got more and more painful to remember with every corpse spotted lumbering in the distance.

"Think we'll find anything in this next house?" Loren finally asked, breaking the moment of silent trudging forwards. "Because if we don't scrounge up more food or water, mom and dad are gonna have skeletons for kids." Her voice was laced with exhaustion but she still attempted to lighten the mood. It was a dry and kinda morbid attempt, but she had kept trying over the week for Felix's sake.

Well... And her own sake.

Approaching the house cautiously Loren didn't see any corpses around, but if she listened closely... Yes, faint groaning and growling could be heard from the back of the house. Hopefully not inside because that would such big-time. Even more so that if the house was picked clean. Because damn, a person can go a solid while without food but getting eaten is super not at all recommended by like... 9/10 doctors. The tenth probably being one that got eaten. Case in point.

Letting out a curt little exhale and turning to her brother, Loren motioned to the house.

"Watch my back?"

Felix’s eyes swept the area around him and Loren continuously, as if a threat would just suddenly pop up out of nowhere. The aluminum bat he gripped tightly wasn’t nearly as reassuring about their ability to handle such an event as one might’ve thought. Especially as his eyes ran over the now-useless gun attached to Loren’s backpack.

He was still kicking himself over that one.

He was kicking himself over a lot of things, actually, including their current destination. He hadn’t really been that keen on heading to Independence, considering the fact he was pretty sure his parents were, y’know, dead, but he’d figured 'hey, maybe if we find Mom and Dad’s shambling corpses, it’ll be one last topic to avoid!’ He wasn't even at the end of how that little adventure turned out, and already he regretted his decision. There had always been more people in Independence which, yeah, of course meant more zombies, but it also meant more survivors, and honestly, as scary as the corpses were, at least they couldn’t think or run or use up resources like Loren and Felix did.

At least they couldn’t plan traps or befriend unsuspecting teenagers just to steal their supplies and kill them in their sleep. Granted, none of this had happened, but you could never be too cautious, right?

He listened to Loren speak, then shrugged, still allowing his eyes to dart around their immediate vicinity. Then she cracked a joke about their probably-dead parents. He really kinda wished Loren would stop trying to be funny, but if he said anything she might get sad or something and he’d feel even shittier than he already did if that happened. And trust him- he felt pretty shitty. No, it was the apocalypse, of course you couldn’t. Even if every other person still alive and not one of those… things… felt the exact same way.

Felix followed closely behind Loren over to the next house they were going to investigate, hoping to have better luck than with the others they'd been to. Though he still kept looking around, he focused more of his attention to the house, and as they got closer and noises started to sound up, Felix hunched up, grip on his bat tightening.

Aaaand of course Loren still wanted to go inside. Great.

Of course, this didn't mean he wouldn't be going in. He scratched the side of one of his hands with the other, looking at Loren as he straightened up, preparing to follow her inside.

“A-always.”

Alisha had tried to get some rest for maybe… Four minutes or so? She wasn’t exactly sure. All she knew was that it wasn’t going to work at all. Even if she wasn’t on the ground and in a house, she still didn’t feel safe enough. The increase of noise outside of the house she was in was enough of a deal breaker as it was. With a small grunt, Alisha would force herself to a stand, going to the window to look out and see just what was going on. The same two assholes (this is probably what she’d start calling them now)  that had been idle a few houses down were now a lot closer and had been so generous as to invite their friends along with them. So what had started off as two now seemed to be around ten if not more.

“Well this just might turn into a shit show,” Alisha muttered to herself, heading back to her bag and pulling out her gun. She didn’t particularly have many bullets left. She hadn’t taken any from the elderly soldier. That had been a mix of her not wanting to be selfish and the fact that he was indeed a scary ass individual. Just because the world was going to shit, didn’t mean people didn’t scare her. She had enough for about 12… Maybe four more if she really dug through her bag. But those bullets would all have to be worth it. It was crunch time whether she liked it or not.

"Just in case…” She’d mutter to herself, glancing over at the bat she’d been holding on to. It was literally her baby at this point as she had done more damage with swinging than actually firing a bullet. A bat was something she had great aim with. A gun? She did not and was glad no one ever trusted her to keep them safe with it. With a gun in hand, Alisha walked through the forgotten home and into the kitchen. She hadn’t done a check of it before and figured it would be a perfect time. Then once she’d gotten as much as she could carry and had eaten something she’d get out of there and start back on her journey to Indiana. Maybe she’d find a car? Goodness, she hoped she’d find a car. This walking was getting annoying. She thought her feet had hurt before? That was absolutely nothing compared to what her feet were feeling now. She, however, couldn’t do much. Letting weakness win was only going to bring death and that was something she had no plans of being a part of.

Bopping her head to an imaginary beat, Alisha put the gun down on the counter and began to open all of the drawers and cupboards, hoping to find some treasure or hell, maybe even a Twinkie.

“Nothing… Nothing.. Nothing… Green beans… Ew… Nothing… Peas… What the hell.” She muttered to herself, taking out the cans worth being eaten. Though they weren’t her most favorite types of food. She would hit a sort of jackpot a few seconds after, finding an unopened can of peaches and a homemade jar of maybe... Jelly? Did she really want to taste it to see? Alisha stared at it for a moment before shrugging. Desperate times would call for desperate measures. Those desperate measures would call upon her to risk those taste buds. Her nose wrinkled at the thought but she pushed it away and kept searching.

There had to be something good...

"Awesome..." Loren whispered, gingerly walking up to the door and grabbing the knob. Going into these horror houses would never have been her first choice but circumstances and and growling stomachs demanded otherwise. Plus y'know... YOLO and all that stupid teenager jazz.

Unfortunately, turning the doorknob and pulling didn't quite have the desired result. The door was clearly unlocked but only slid half-an-inch out of the frame, accompanied by a muted metallic noise. Pulling harder didn't seem to help either, as despite her best effort Loren's noodle-armed brute strength was not enough. Maybe this house was a bust... There weren't any ground-floor windows on their side of the house and she was not risking heading towards the infected.

Until she realized it was a push door. Keyword being "push".

Flushing bright pink Loren wordlessly pushed the door open, listening for any footsteps or rustling within as she stepped inside. The hallway and living room were clear from what she could see, and tentative step forward revealed an equally as empty closet. The floor creaked a bit under Loren's converse and seemed to have scared a few bugs living under the wood, but nothing else seemed to be alive or lurching towards them.

But were they really dead? They definitely weren’t alive, but... Nnnnope, not gonna think about it. Too busy.

“Hey Fe, it looks clear...!” Loren called back quietly, turning around to check on him. "We should head for the kitchen before somebody wanders in, but try not to make any-"

The edge of her backpack caught a rusty candlestick as she turned, knocking it loudly to the floor and sending it rolling down the hallway. It stopped near the kitchen, bumping quietly into a wall.

"... Noise.

Felix nodded, mind already going wild with thoughts of what could go on as Loren struggled with the doorknob.

He was ready to take it as a sign, and was actually about to say that maybe they should just cut their losses and move on to a different house before someone or something else was attracted by the noise when she pushed the door open and walked inside.

Oh. He guessed it was too late to go back now. Damn.

Right behind her, he listened for the telltale noises of something moving around inside. Well, other than the creaking of Loren’s steps, he revised, wincing.

Once Loren gave the okay, he looked to her and just kept looking as he walked in after she gave the all-clear, doing a quick look-over of his own as he stepped inside before looking at her as she continued talking to him. This meant he had the pleasure of seeing what was going to happen a second before it did. The little attention he had been giving to surveying exits and trying to ignore how trapped he felt went back to his main focus, which just so happened to be watching as Loren’s bag headed straight for the rusted candle.

“L-L-L-,” he tried to start, and yeah, he’d gotten caught on a word. God damn it.

It was too late to try again by then, and it had probably been futile to begin with, so all he could do was watch as the candlestick bounced onto the ground and over to the wall.

Internally, he screamed- loudly.

He looked to the door. Someone could’ve heard that. What if those things decided to come into the house through it? But what if they were already in the house? Then they’d have to waste time opening the door, which Loren had already failed at earlier.. Either way they were screwed.

He could just back out of the house or something, but that would leave his sister alone, again. He couldn’t do that, okay?

Not after last time.

So he just ended up standing there, looking to his sister for any clue as to what he should do, terrified.

At first, Alisha would have been mostly focused on the sounds of growling coming from the damned things outside. They were nerve-wracking while also being quite annoying. But there wasn’t much she could really do about it other than keep it moving. So that was what she’d do as she continued pulling down any cans she could find. But in the back of her mind, something was nagging her. Had she heard something unrelated to the continuous groaning noise? Was it another person?

She’d pause momentarily, tuning out the necessary noise and listening for something else. But as of then she heard nothing. So imagine her surprise of going back to scavenging only to hear the door to her temporary safe haven being pulled at. Immediately, a chill would rush over her. From head to toe, she’d tense up like a deer in headlights. Caught. Panic would rise and her thoughts would race.

Was she about to die? Had they been following her this whole time? Would she be able to fight them? How long until they found her? Would she see her parents in heaven?

‘Stop it,’ She’d order herself silently. Her eyes would scan the area around her, looking for anything out of place. ‘Shut the hell up. You are going to get out of this but to do that you need to buck up and start moving.’

Alisha wouldn’t waste another moment, grabbing her gun off the counter as the sound of the door swung open. She’d see if there were any more bullets, cursing under her breath when she saw she didn’t have much. Her ammo was in her bag as well- which was all the way in the living room. Much too risky of a move to grab it now. But they wouldn’t know how much she was packing and all she had to do was pretend her way through it. Her knuckles were turning a lighter shade from her grip and it would take all she could do not to scream in surprise at the sound of something clattering to the floor. She placed a hand upon her chest, trying to steady her breathing. Going out there rambling and shaky wasn’t going to help with her appearance. If she wanted to do this right she would have to look like the biggest bad ass she could be. She heard the rolling coming closer to the kitchen and peeked out just enough to see that it was a candlestick.

The panic she had felt would change to confusion for a moment before she pushed it out. Now wasn’t the time. Taking a deep breath, Alisha would position her gun and put on her best ‘I dare you to try me’ face before quickly stepping out and pointing her gun in the direction the candlestick had come from.

“Stop right there!” She hissed, her eyes falling upon two teenagers. She’d pause for a moment, utterly surprised to see people so young. How had they gone this far? Were there more teens? Children? Oh, those poor souls.

‘Or… They could be a pair of bratty ass kids that have no shame in killing someone for their own gain. Not trustworthy.’

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing here?”

She had so many questions she wanted to ask them. So many. But she wouldn’t be able to ask them all. Not now at least. Right now she needed to figure out whether this would be a fine interaction or if she’d have blood on her hands and the guilt of killing children.

Floundering for moment Loren looked between her horrified little brother and the kitchen door. "Run or stay" repeated on loop in the back of her head before the telltale creaking of something moving snapped her back to attention. Something was in the house. Like in-in the house, for realsies. But if they hadn't heard it until now...

"Stop right there!"

If it was possible to jump entirely out of her skin, Loren probably would have done so. Standing right where the candlestick had stopped was a woman, gun in hand and what looked like the intention to shoot. Or was there hesitance...? Either way Loren was having none of it and stepped protectively in front of her brother, hand squeezing her knife so hard her knuckles turned bright white.

"I-if she shoots, run or d-duck into a room..." The teenager whispered, hoping Felix heard her through the shakiness in her voice. The woman barked a question next, making Loren flinch and almost take a step back. The impulsive part of her brain immediately responded with "what is anybody doing out here you freak", but she decided it probably wouldn't be the best conversation starter.

"W-we..." Loren stuttered as confidently as possible. "... Could ask you the same thing. What the f-fuck are you doing here?"

It was... Something, at least. If the woman had any perception she'd see how much of a bluff it was. Their only weapons were a piddly little knife and a baseball bat, nothing ranged. The only damage they could do was throw things at her, and even that was -literally- hit or miss. They were stuck. Totally at the other woman's mercy. Unless Loren sacrificed herself dramatically of course, but she had a feeling Felix would kill her for that.

"... Also if you shoot us every infected for miles will hear and come eat you. J-just a thought..."

He just stood there, waiting for his sister to do something, or issue some kind of order or just- something, right? And then there was creaking, and he couldn't help the tiny involuntary step he took back as a woman with a gun appeared, his sister still not having done anything except glance between him and the kitchen door.

Then Loren was in front of him, and as much as he wanted to object he couldn't really make himself. Really, the most he could do right now was try and not bolt. He felt as if he was being pushed at from all sides and he just wanted to get out. And then Loren was giving him instructions and he wanted to be sassy and say something about how some instructions would've been nice earlier, or... or something. But instead he just stood there and nodded, keeping her words at the forefront of his mind.

Of course, then Loren was saying something dumb enough he just looked at her. Loren, that wasn't considered a legal move here!!! If he wasn't currently a bit afraid a woman with a gun was going to start shooting them he might've said that out loud, too. Then she revised it, though, and he realized, hey, Loren has a point. Of course, there were already enough undead right outside this house to make Felix uncomfortable, and just because it wasn't smart didn't mean this person wouldn't do it, so he couldn't quite will himself to relax yet.

In fact, it did just the opposite of that- he gripped his bat harder, waiting to see where this all went, occasionally glancing at the front door longingly.

Alisha would stare at the two before her, never wavering in facial expression or the position of her arms. She figured she didn’t have to be too focused on her stance. They weren’t a pair of huge men that could crush her head with no problem. They didn’t seem threatening. But if they were anything like the teens she’d grown up with, they’d be absolute bastards and this sort of situation wouldn’t make it anymore better.

So the words to be directed at her would cause her to pause, almost letting her guard down.

Her eyebrow would raise along with the tip of mouth in something of a disgusted snarl mixed with confusion. Did this girl really just say that?

“You can’t just turn around and ask me the question I asked you,” She said with a scoff. “You answer my question!!”

With furrowed eyebrows now, she’d continue to stare at them for a few seconds longer, expecting an answer only to be given the girl’s two-cents about shooting. Heh, very good point. The groaning from outside was wonderful support of her claim. Though Alisha already knew this. Her shooting and killing them would only cause more trouble than it’d be worth. She’d then have a small horde of them trying to get in. No as many bullets since two would be wasted on them and even a bigger hassle when trying to get out alive.

She wouldn’t respond for a few seconds, continuing to stare them down before giving a small nod. “They’d come, but they wouldn’t eat me.” She’d respond, letting her arms fall and bring the gun down in front of her. For right now they wouldn’t be an automatic threat. If anything, they could be used to help her get out and possibly go their separate ways.

“I’ll ask you once more, are there any more of you?” She’d turn around, making her way to the living room to grab her book bag before heading back to the kitchen to stock up the things she’d already taken down. Her stance would seem as relaxed as she could get. She was in a house with a pair that she had no idea about and was slowly but surely being surrounded by a group of creatures that wouldn’t hesitate to get their teeth into her skin.

How was it that she found herself in these situations? She wasn’t sure but she wondered if others fell into these situations the way she did.

“I’m sure you’re here to scavenge. There’s still some left up there. You can have it.” She called out, being careful not to be too loud and attract the attention of the lovely dwellers outside. “I’m sure you’ll need it eventually."

Well that had certainly gone... Well? Better than expected, since zero bullets had entered Loren's body and the stranger seemed to relax a bit. After the understandably incredulous follow-up questions, but less 'I'm ready to shoot you at any time'. Though she'd certainly seemed confidant about making it past the horde... Alone and after wasting bullets murdering kids no less. The thought gave Loren serious chills, ice-cold dread spilling into her stomach and replacing the burst of confidence from only moments before.

"Any more-?" She repeated, eyes glued to the woman's gun as she lowered it. "O-oh, no it's just us... And you... And them..."

Trailing off the last few words Loren shifted on her feet, glancing towards the windows pointedly. Every second she expected a rotting hand to slap against the glass, or a gargling groan to float through the cracked walls. It was crazy making.

Aw hell, and Loren had told the truth about her and Felix... A bluffed threat of reinforcements would have been smart, maybe got the armed lady to back off. Dammit. Too late now, might as well carry through.

The teenager had barely opened her mouth to ask a question of her own when the woman turned, disappearing back into the kitchen. She didn't seem to be leaving or finding a better distance to shoot, so Loren let herself relax a bit too.

"... We really do need more food..." She whispered back to Felix, glancing over her shoulder at him. "But we could also probably make a run for it while she's distracted... Think she'd follow us?"

God, this woman was just staring at them. Felix started shifting on his feet, stealthily looking at the door. It felt like ants were crawling on him. If he weren’t in this house… no, he’d only get himself shot like that, and he wasn’t that much of an idiot. Then the woman was snarling and his attention whipped back to her, unable to stop a tiny flinch back. Shit, please don't let her shoot him for that.

Her response to Loren reasoning that she really shouldn’t shoot them only put him more on edge. What, is this woman insane? he asked himself. Of course if these monsters came they would eat her! That’s what they did!

But the gun was moving down, so maybe she wasn’t quite as crazy as she was acting. He let his grip on the bat loosen, but then Loren was talking again and being truthful and he couldn’t help but shift his grip on his bat, grip tightening again, feet shuffling as he watched the woman walk towards the kitchen with the offer of food. His stomach clenched, helpfully reminding him that he hadn’t had a real meal since everything went to hell.

And then Loren was asking his opinion. He took a second, thinking. On the one hand, if they went into that kitchen, the woman might just kill them. However, if they ran, the woman also might just kill them. And, his stomach reminded him painfully, if they just ran they might not find enough food to last until they ‘found’ their parents.

“W-we could die eith..er way,” Felix said simply, forcing himself to let the bat in his hand hang loose as he walked past Loren and into the kitchen.

Staring at the cans for a moment, the young woman would be lost in thought when she’d notice that one of them had come in. Glancing back she’d see it was the young boy. A small smirk came to her face. Probably came in because of the mention of food. No one could ever deny food, no matter what the circumstance was. She’d begin packing her own in her book bag, nonchalantly taking a can and sliding it down the counter as an indication for him to take it.

“I didn’t take all of it.” She spoke after a few seconds. “There should be more in that cabinet over there.”

Alisha would put the book bag on, giving a small grunt at the heavier weight of it. She’d reach into a cabinet and grab another can, putting it on the counter before her before searching the drawers for a can opener. Sliding past the kid, she would open them all before finally finding one. She’d make a noise of happiness and immediately go at trying to open her own can. It wouldn’t take long and after digging around for a fork she’d stab it into the peaches in the can. Taking some out, she’d take a moment to savor the sweet peaches in her mouth. One swallow later, Alisha would feel a lot better than how she’d been feeling a while ago.

Food certainly did make things better.

“What’s your name kid?” She asked him, those dark eyes of hers now staring straight at him. She would keep her focus on him, only glancing at the girl if she decided to come into the room.

(( @KaiaWolf @mikaluvkitties ))

((Sorry you two. My motivation isn't at an all-time high at the moment. Posts will be longer than this when we get it rolling.))

((No worries, I'm in the same boat ^^; |  Though I think it's safe for posts to be a bit shorter right now, since we're all together bein' social))

Loren watched her brother slide past, almost protesting before realizing he was right. Anyone could die at pretty much any time. It wasn't a comforting thought but it was enough to get the teen moving, following Felix hesitantly into the kitchen. Knife still clutched awkwardly in her fingers she watched the older woman from the doorway, eyes following her as she moved around the kitchen. Better to be cautious than dead, right?

After a moment however the blonde decided she wasn't in imminent danger, inching fully into the room and slipping her backpack off. She noticed the woman glance over at her but said nothing, focusing instead on packing cans into her bag. It wasn't meant to be a rude gesture but the longer Loren ignored her she felt almost... Guilty? She'd never exactly been a quick-to-trust person, even before the outbreak, but considering how few people seemed to be alive right now maybe making friends was a better plan.

Unfortunately Loren was far too committed her to silent act at the moment. Now ensconced in the reading of can labels she wandered from cupboard to cupboard, checking drawers and everything in-between for edible things.

'This house gave me a heart attack,' She thought to herself. '-but at least we get to eat tonight.'

Her stomach growled pointedly as if in agreement.

Felix entered the room cautiously, trying to calm down as his skin continued to crawl. The woman turning around and smirking at him didn’t really help.
But then she was sliding a can down to him, and the pang in his stomach was enough to remind him that he’d chosen to forgo safety in place of a much more important goal- food.

He took the can as slowly as he could manage, just feeling the weight in his hand as she spoke, nodding. And then he sat down both the can and his bat, pulling off his near-empty backpack and unzipping it, heading for the cabinet she had mentioned. He stopped, glancing back at her when she gruntet, making sure that it wasn’t something he should be worried about.

Okay, she was just picking up a bag. That didn’t really concern him. He began loading his own bag with goods, momentarily tensing as Alisha slid by him before once again continuing to pack his bag with what was left, not even looking at the names on the cans. Food’s food, right?

And then, partway through taking the cans, he was looking up again with interest at her happy noise. Oh. She had a can opener.

He watched as she opened the can of peaches, mouth watering as he watched her take a bite, eyes moving to glance at the can opener.
And then she was talking to him. Oh.

He looked at his sister next to him, hoping for some kind of assistance, but she was silent.

Great. He’d actually have to talk to her. So, keeping his eyes on the can opener and not on her, he started, “F...Felix.” A gesture towards Loren as he continued, “That’s L-Loren. You?”

Alisha would enjoy her peaches, waiting for the answer from the boy. He’d given the girl a look and Alisha wondered if he was asking permission to speak or seeing if she’d be the one to respond. But she was obviously not going to say something so it would be his time to shine. A small smirk would come to Alisha as she thought of that. Time to shine…

She would listen to him, glancing at the girl she now knew as Loren and the boy named Felix. She’d give a small smile in response, taking another bite of her peaches and savoring the taste of it again. The can would touch her lips and she would take a sip of the sweet syrup that accompanied the fruit. Forcing it away, Alisha would take a satisfied breath, smiling at the two before her.

“Pleasure to meet you both in a circumstance like this, Loren-“ Her eyes would flicker to the girl. “And Felix.”

Her eyes would flicker to the cabinet near her and she wondered if there was anything left. “My name is Alisha.”

The undead outside would seemingly grow louder to her, causing her to immediately stiffen up. They seemed way to close for her liking. Hell, if they were a block away that was still too close. The time was coming to leave this place and it seemed to be coming fast. Her eyes would flicker over on the other two and for a brief moment, the young woman would wonder if they’d be leaving with her.

Alisha grabbed her book bag, putting it on as a precaution before going back to finish the rest of her peaches. “They certainly are having a party out there…” She'd mumble, looking down into her can and taking a sip of the liquid.

"They'll be coming if they hear any more noise. With that, I ask you to be careful... No more sudden noises like before."

She would pause for a moment, giving a small snicker. "Not like before. I wonder how you two got this far. Seem to be the... Clumsy types."
