The Sallija Family: Nobles of Thieves

While the Sallija are merely entertainers to the regular people, they have a long lineage dating back to the beginning of the Thieves’ Guild, an underground network of criminals. While the family set itself to entertain, the pickpocketing and sudden loss of expensive brooches never ceased in the audience. Young children were sent for this job, while the adults captivate their audience. But, for the right price of course, the Sallija are a powerful political family. They are talented spies and their natural charisma charms those they encounter. And, unlike most unaffiliated criminals, the Sallija have standards...and pride. Every thief knows not to mess with a Sallija.

Magic

The schools
In the world of Anachet magic is a very particular art used to solve a problem in life. It falls into several catagories which then divide into subclasses and catagories of their own. The main catagories are, Spiritual, utility, research, and combat.
Spiritual are trained to understand emotion, people, life, death and the afterlife. They are commonly healers but it isn't unheard of for one of them to be an advisor or a priest.
Researchers are mages who focus on the acquiring of knowledge and wisdom. Their spells are usually focused on seeing what lies hidden, cracking codes or puzzles, and sending or receiving messages.
Combat are the least common amongst the empire, they focus on destroying targets and crippling defenses. A combat mage is often fiery and hotheaded, unlike other mages for them it's not about knowledge or hidden secrets, it's about repetition and mastering spells to be used on a reflex.
Utility
These guys are the most common form of mage and are sort of a jack of all trades. They can cast spells from any domain yet are masters of none. Utility mages dont devote themselves to a single focus choosing instead to let the world guide them.

The domains
Now in addition to the types of mage there are types of spells called domains these further narrow down what a spell is
For example a spell that uses flames to create a wall between yourself and a threat would be either a Combat spell, or a utility spell but either way would fall into the fire domain. While no domains are restricted to one type of mage some tend to lean in a specific direction. For example a healing domain spell will almost always come from the spiritual schools, a fire domain spell will almost always be from the combat school.

The spells

A spell in this world is not a super power. They do not last forever nor do they cast for free. Using a spell takes energy and it is used for a specific purpose. They happen quickly and resolve just as quickly. You won't have fire manipulation you will be able to use spells such as fireball, flame whip, or wall of flames. A wizard must read a spell from a book a sorcerer must have the proper components, and a warlock requires focus and energy. The most powerful spell ever cast was a wish spell that brought a man's wife back from the dead, so keep in mind magic is not all powerful.

The types of mages.

Mages are separated into three catagories based on what they require to cast a spell.
Wizards- wizards require only time and study along with the ability to speak in order to master a spell. They often have the words written on a scroll or when they learn the code, in their spellbook. A wizard may know a few spells without the book, but any wizard who's been at it for a while has more than could ever be remembered. A wizard cannot cast spells if they cannot speak or if their speech is muffled.
Bards, Singers, rune mages, and scholars are good examples of a wizard.
Sorcerers- a sorcerer is any mage who draws the needed energy from natural or magical components. Unlike wizards Sorcerers don't look for quantity of spells but rather quality. They master a spell and figure out ways to get the needed energy from elsewhere, such as getting Flint steel and leaves together to cast a wall of fire, or gathering alcohol bandages and herbs to cast a healing spell. Sorcerers are dangerous because they cut the cost of magic to it's minimum allowing them to Outlast most other mages, but without any components a sorcerer is powerless. Witches, alchemists, and shamans are good examples of a sorcerer.
Warlocks- a warlock is a mage who needs nothing but a little focus, and the right emotional state of mind. They memorize a spell work themselves into a frenzy and use their anger, sorrow, contempt, or even joy as fuel. Warlocks are usually combat mages but do have a very notable weakness, if their focus is broken their spell fizzles out. Many warlocks live short lives but are often the most powerful spell casters when it comes to raw power. The strongest spell ever cast came from a warlock. Battle mages, spell swords, Wise women, and Clerics are good examples of a warlock.

The freedom of magic.

Magic isn't loved in this world for it's power but for it's wonder, one can accomplish nearly anything with a good spell, and overcoming the impossible is the very nature of magic. You can literally have a spell for anything so long as you keep the cost in mind. The closer to impossible a task the more magic required. For example you can cast a featherweight spell to make a big guy light enough for you to toss him around like a child, but that same spell would kill you if you tried it on a hundred ton baloth. You can make a magic missile spell that hits three separate people in the face, but that same spell would kill you if you tried to hit an army with it. Be sure that as a mage you never underestimate the effectiveness of a little effort over a spell.

Since we have an elf now what are your thoughts on non human races in the empire? Is there a list or do we make up our own?
