Defiance of Fire is an alternate universe, but more specifically it is an alternate future of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This future occurred due to a single deviation from the original timeline. The reaches of this change effectively remove Legend of Korra from continuity and rewrite every one of the original seasons of Avatar. What change single change could be so impactful?

Avatar Aang died in the frigid sea when he left the Eastern Air Temple during the storm.

Early DeviationsWhile the impact of this change is far-stretching, it did result in definite immediate changes to the world as well. Arguably the most positive change is the singular fact that the genocide of the Air Nation did not occur. In this world, the body of the deceased Avatar was recovered and ultimately handed over to the Fire Nation. This act alone saved the Eastern and Southern Air Temples and thus half of the Air Nation population. The Western Air Temple and the Northern Air Temple were the first and second to fall respectively, thus found no salvation. This was not the end for them, however. The Fire Nation demanded the land—specifically the shoreline—around the Southern Air Temple to create docks for their impending siege on the Southern Water Tribe. The population was too large for the Eastern Air Temple to maintain, but an offer was made by the Fire Nation: they would help rebuild the Western Air Temple should enough of the Air Nation choose to relocate to it. This process of rebuilding would require years and split the remaining Air Nation in half, but it the pacifistic nature of the Air Nomads and the destruction of two of their temples cemented in their new, divided fate as a people. Even still, this was not the final atrocity the remaining Air Nomads faced. Fire Lord Sozin demanded the slaughter of every Airbender child from ages eight-to-thirteen to assure the death of the Avatar. Not even those that migrated to the Western Air Temple were spared.

Sozin was methodical. His attack on the Air Nomads using his naval fleet was mere preparation for the oncoming years. Using the Southern Air Temple docks as a base for his navy and a massive, coordinated attack on the Earth Kingdom, Sozin placed himself in the perfect position to capitalize The Great Comet (later known as Sozin's Comet). Instead of using this raw power to commit genocide on the Air Nomads, the Fire Nation instead used this power to dominate the Southern Water Tribe so fiercely that it conceded while overwhelming the Earth Kingdom in a prone attack, taking out most of its most highly-defensive positions while the bulk of the army followed-through from the South. The result was control over eighty-percent of the Earth Kingdom and absolute control over the Southern Water Tribe. The war that was once called the Hundred Year War was in its infancy and nearly over. It turned out, however, that victory would not be as easy as expected. The remaining Earth Kingdom forged an alliance with the Northern Water Tribe, resulting in the entire area North of Ba Sing Se which still stood strong to be under the control of this alliance. The Fire Nation found themselves in a stalemate.

Later DeviationsThis may have continued decades, but fortune fell into the hands of the Fire Nation. In the short years that followed Sozin's Comet, the new Avatar was a born. A girl to the Southern Water Tribe. Her native name was lost as she was reborn in the Fire Nation as Avatar Aria and indoctrinated to the Fire Nation from her youth. Cut off from her Avatar State intentionally and brainwashed to believe her destiny was to unite the Four Nation under a single banner, Aria became the instrument of victory for Fire Lord Sozin. A master of all four elements by sixteen and an elite soldier by twenty-one, she busted through the stalemate the war had become. In her first two years on the battlefiled, she lead the forces that cut the connections between the Northern Water Tribe and Ba Sing Se. In two more years, her viscious assault had finally broken through the walls not only by sheer power but by the dwindling numbers and strength of the Earthbenders. The Northern Water tribe was a single nation against the Fire Nation that had dominated the rest of the world and now had an Avatar and the most well-defended position ever built. They too soon conceded.

Fire Lord Sozin did not see his vision of the world come to pass as he died before the victory in Ba Sing Se. Instead, it was his son, Azulon, that saw the fall of Ba Sing Se, surrender of the Northern Water Tribe, and all four great nations and all benders united under the Fire Nation banner. In the years that came, Azulon continued to quell rebellions and effectively force peace down on the four Nations with his powerful arms, conscripted soldiers, and of course, the raw power of Avatar Aria. Azulon brought forth stability to the new world his father created and after three years of creating laws and embassies as well as enforcing the regulations and respect the Fire Nation set forth, he implemented the final step in the plans his father and now he laid out to truly unite the four nations. In what would be the year 59 AG, Fird Lord Azulon drafted the Treaty of the Phoenix which established New Ba Sing Se as the world Capitol, established a sovereign nation of the Phoenix Kingdom to rule over the four Nations, and saw Azulon renounce his status of the Fire Lord to become the Pheonix King.

Rise of the Phoenix KingdomAfter decades of prosperity under Phoenix King Azulon, the well-established leader brought forth a council of representatives from each nation requesting their input on the next Phoenix King. With the untimely passing of Azulon, the decision came down to a duel between brothers: an Angi Kai between Fire Lord Iroh and Ozai. The duel was considered heavily one-sided as even with eight months to prepare, Ozai was not only younger but had been conditioned for far longer while Iroh had been properly ruling the Fire Nation for years. Ultimately become a battle of endurance, Ozai won the Agni Kai and the right to become the next Phoenix King. This ushered in a new era of rule where Ozai, invigorated by his first victory and just barely quenching his thirst for power, began further enforcing the law. To do this, he sent out several ambassadors and strengthened Phoenix Kingdom presence across the globe.

The actions of Ozai led to several rebellions, assassinations, and uprising that were quelled with force repeatedly. None more famous than the assassination of Lu Ten and his wife from the Northern Water Tribe. In reparations, Ozai made an example of the Northern Water Tribe by burning several outlying settlements outside of the Capitol and bearing down an immense amount of naval force. Ozai forced the Northern Water Tribe to turn over two hundred first-born sons of the upper class within the Northern Water tribe with intentions of executing them. Otherwise, face far worse from the overwhelming force of the Fire Nation Navy. The Northern Water Tribe complied and were turned over to Fire Lord Iroh to proclaim their fate. Iroh proclaimed that no man should have to feel the pain of watching their child die, thus spared the sons of the Northern Water Tribe and instead fated them to become farmers in the Earth Kingdom.

That was the last act of good faith from the new era of the Phoenix Kingdom. Since the death of Lu Ten, Phoenix King Ozai continued to bear down on the other nations, specifically the outlying Earth Kingdom and Northern Water Tribe. Not a month goes by without a new rebellion, not a week goes by without a death on either side.

Unknown date before 3,888 BPK

- In the advent of the Avatar, the lion turtles collectively decided that their task as protectors of mankind was done and that they would no longer grant any more bending powers.
- The humans begin to wage war against each other, forcing Wan to intervene in order to maintain peace. His efforts, however, are of little success. The violent conflicts continue until his death and beyond. The next Avatar is born into the cycle after Wan's death.
- Wan Shi Tong brings his library from the Spirit World into the physical world.
- The four bending arts are proliferated across humanity, giving way to the establishment of the four nations.
- Humanity splits into the four nations, each divided by the respective elements. The Air Nomads learn the art of airbending from the flying bison, the Earth Kingdom learn the art of earthbending from the badgermoles (Oma and Shu being the first known humans to earthbend), the Sun Warriors learn the art of firebending from the dragons, and the Water Tribes learn the art of waterbending by observing the pull of the moon on the ocean tides.
- A group of waterbenders from the Northern Water Tribe construct a large city out of ice in order to unite the various tribes inhabiting the North Pole region.
- Following a civil unrest, the Water Tribe —which was originally centered around the North Pole— splits into two groups: one stayed at the North Pole, while the other group went out to settle the South Pole. Relations with their sister tribe were later healed, and the two tribes would gather together at annual New Moon celebrations.
- A large group of waterbenders from the Southern Water Tribe, who are wandering through the Earth Kingdom, discover the Foggy Swamp and, comfortable with the large amount of water there, decide to stay, forming the Foggy Swamp Tribe. The Southern Water Tribe never learns of this offshoot and the Foggy Swamp Tribe itself later forgets its own origins.
- The Sun Warriors gradually fade into obscurity as their civilization declines, leaving many ruins across their island archipelago. The Sun Warriors are believed to have gone extinct, though in reality a handful hiding in the ruins would continue their culture for centuries. The art of firebending, however, was passed on to the other inhabitants of the islands. These would gradually coalesce into the "Fire Nation" Originally the Fire Nation was a spiritual people ruled by Fire Sages, much as the Air Nomads were led by their monks. Over time, however, one sage rose to prominence above the others, ruling the Fire Nation as a sovereign, and the office became hereditary, beginning the line of Fire Lords.
- The vast Earth Kingdom is gradually united under the political authority of the city-state of Ba Sing Se. The King of Ba Sing Se becomes Earth King, overlord of all of the smaller kingdoms within the Earth Kingdom, some of which retain their own hereditary lordship.
- Avatar Yangchen of the Air Nomads is born in the Western Air Temple, after the death of her predecessor. Her reign as Avatar is a peaceful one, due to her fierce dedication to keeping balance and serving the world. She dies around 371 BPK, and Avatar Kuruk is born in the Northern Water Tribe.
- Avatar Kuruk tries to kill Koh, the Face Stealer, as revenge for stealing the face of his fiancée Ummi. This event is confusing to place chronologically, as if Koh's description of the event is taken literally, it would have happened c. 800-700 BPK, over three hundred years before Kuruk's death.

c. 3,904 BPK

- The airbending Guru Laghima achieves weightlessness, and lives his final forty years without touching the ground.

397 BPK — Year of the Dragon

- Avatar Kuruk dies; Avatar Kyoshi of the Earth Kingdom is born.

c. 365 BPK — Year of the Dog

- Avatar Kyoshi kills the warlord Chin and founds Kyoshi Island; the War of Chin the Conqueror ends with the victory of the Earth Kingdom government. The 46th Earth King restores his reign over the whole Earth Kingdom, though civil unrest begins to spread on the continent. The day of Chin's death is remembered as Avatar Day in Chin Village and Kyoshi Day on Kyoshi Island.
- Sometime after this event, a peasant uprising in Ba Sing Se spurs Kyoshi to create the Dai Li. In the process, the Earth Kingdom is turned into a constitutional monarchy.

167 BPK — Year of the Horse

- Avatar Kyoshi dies at age 230; Avatar Roku of the Fire Nation is born.
- Fire Lord Sozin is born the same day as Roku.

151 BPK — Year of the Dog

- Avatar Roku is confirmed as Avatar at his sixteenth birthday, and leaves the Fire Nation to master the elements.

- Guru Pathik is born.

- Avatar Roku discovers the first Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom and confronts Fire Lord Sozin. Roku and Sozin engage in battle, resulting in Roku destroying part of the Fire Nation Royal Palace.

93 BPK — Year of the Dragon

- Avatar Roku is killed while fighting a volcanic eruption at age seventy; Avatar Aang of the Air Nomads is born.

before c. 85 — 86 BPK

- Aang receives his tattoos after inventing the air scooter technique, making him the youngest airbending master in recorded history.

c. 84 — 85 BPK

- Aang and his eccentric childhood friend Bumi would slide down the Omashu delivery system for fun.
- Aang played with his friend Kuzon in the Fire Nation

(59 BPK — present)

The New Nations

  • The Phoenix Kingdom is the newest of the five recognized, sovereign states. Established Fire Lord Azulon via the Treaty of the Phoenix, the Phoenix Kingdom spans the world over with embassies in every major city. The Phoenix Kingdom presently acts as an absolute monarchy under the control of the Phoenix King. Aside from New Ba Sing Se and its existing embassies, the Phoenix Kingdom has no actual geographical area designated to it. Instead, it exists using its embassies as barracks for enforcers that act as military police and the official Fire Nation military when such is insufficient. Because of taxation and a series of loans to bolster industrialization, the Phoenix Kingdom is without a doubt the most wealthy nation. With the greatest military force, wealth, and designated political power in the known world, no current nation has the power to formally resist the Phoenix King.

While all embassies technically function as a barracks for military police, most are situated in areas that don't see considerable hostility. In these scenarios, Phoenix Kingdom embassies act like courthouses where legal proceedings are heard, taxes are paid, local representatives address issues, and general meeting areas for concerned citizens. While rare, some embassies even act as public houses (taverns). In areas with multiple, small settlements that do not merit a single embassy, there often exists a regional embassy citizens may travel to; it is rare that an ambassador travel, although not unheard of.

Embassies in larger cities are often attached to if not the largest building in the city, often having renovated important palaces or buildings to suit these needs. Security is often more strict and depending on the hostility of a city, outlying barracks for military police may exist. In some cities, success has been found with military police merely assisting local law enforcement as to avoid completely encroaching on the locality. The military police and embassies act as the most constant, day-to-day reminders of the Phoenix Kingdom and its ever-present influence.

Primarily across the Earth Kingdom, the Phoenix Kingdom has redistributed its wealth to rebuilding and pushing industrialization. This is none more present in the technological advances that helped the Fire Nation win the Great War now being used in economical tasks such as mining, milling, and construction. Output from mines has led to increases in coal and metal which in turn allows for higher volumes of production which itself feeds the economy. While these profits often go to loans or taxes which directly fund the Phoenix Kingdom, many local towns have never seen more success. This success is also evident in higher volumes of trade which has been secured by safer roads and the unified banner of the Phoenix Kingdom.

Phoenix King Azulon is credited with bringing the nations together after decades of turmoil and the open wounds of the Great War. Statues of himself, Avatar Aria, and Fire Lord Sozin are found in every Capitol of the world. The three are often called the Trinity of Flame that brought the Kingdom to life through scorching fire. Fire Lord Sozin is considered one of the greatest military minds to ever exist, Phoenix King Azulon one of the most capable and charismatic leaders world has ever known, and Avatar Aria the force behind them both that seared their power into history. Their influence has trickled into every-day life for members of every nation and their reputation and accolades are taught in classrooms across the board.

History is written by victors and the world was won by the Fire Nation.
